As the half-term break approaches, there are many students who are relieved to take the opportunity to find space to relax and recharge. For Year 2 students leavers, the last two weeks have been a focussed application of 2 years of learning as they have done their best in assessments, whilst Year 1 students are now preparing for the final stretch of the academic year after they return. We wish you all the best of luck in your endeavors, and perhaps our content in this edition looking at well-being, will give you pause for thought and ideas on how to manage the intensity of this period?
As we do move forward, I am pleased to say that Year 2 leavers will be contacted in the week ahead with information about an opportunity to engage with a 3 day, certificated Internship over the summer – it will look great on any CV or Personal Statement. Look out for emails about “Internship Experience UK”. Year 1 students, on the other hand, should look to the content in this edition, covering Progression Week. Beginning 14/6, this week will focus on thinking about the future, with activities arranged by your courses (ask your teachers for more information), and a series of General talks that may appeal to any student (Table of talks inside). So, relax, recharge, refocus on the final stretch.
Enjoy your break, Careers Team
TIPS FOR A GOODNIGHT'S SLEEP Reduce Caffeine Intake A cup of coffee can help us wake up in the morning, but did you know caffeine stays in the bloodstream for 12 hours and negatively affects the quality of our sleep? Try to limit caffeine intake to before midday. Practice Meditation Meditation relaxes not only the mind but also the body. By encouraging slower breathing, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated which in turn lowers our heart rate, making it easier to fall asleep. Get Regular Exercise Exercising during the day makes it much easier to fall and stay asleep at night. It allows for a much deeper sleep as the body recovers from the strain of the exercise. Just make sure not to exercise too close to bedtime since exercise has a stimulating effect on our mind and body. Relax Before Bed Take time to relax an hour before bed by having a hot bath or shower, reading a book, or drinking a cup of decaffeinated tea. By creating a bedtime routine we ready ourselves for sleep meaning that we are able to fall asleep quicker.

It is with pride and excitement we would like to make you aware of our ‘Pride in Higher Aspirations’ programme for Pride Month 2021. neaco are helping raise aspirations towards Further and Higher Education (FE/HE) amongst LGBTQ+ youth across the East Anglia region. We have produced a range of pre-recorded chats, video clips, written case studies and quotes from LGBTQ+ individuals who are in, or have been in, FE/HE. We want young people to look at individuals who have obtained a career or job through FE/HE and see themselves, thinking ‘if they can thrive, so can I!’. This is a cross-county effort by neaco HECs, with support from the Norfolk LGBT Project, Future First and the Fifty Shades of Gender podcast and is accessible to all schools and students in the East Anglia region. Throughout Pride Month, simply go to the following webpage on the neaco website: https://neaco.eprospectus.co.uk/resources/pages/pride-in-higher-aspirations/ and follow the #TakeYourPlaceHE hashtag on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube for daily signposting to stories, experiences and advice from LGBTQ+ people and allies, for LGBTQ+ young people, their allies and friends.

Virtual Work experience Student Story Year 1 student Laura has recently completed a Virtual Work experience placement with Dunreay Site Restoration Ltd, courtesy of Speakers 4 Schools programme. Here she shares her experience. How did I hear about my work experience? Well, it’s simple and will be for you as well if you are looking for one. My progress coach told me about Speakers for Schools and to sign up so you can find work experience. I registered for email notifications and saw about this work experience, in the nuclear reactor sector, which is in my interest. I clicked on the work experience and there I have found information about this work experience, the dates, skills you can get what they are doing etc. How to apply? If you want to apply for work experience it’s very easy and should not take you too long. You would need to do the pre-application if you haven’t done this before as once you have answered some of their questions like if you have done work experience before, your interest skills and couple more questions, this is then saved for you to use again for other opportunities.
After this, you will do your application which here again is very easy. They will ask you questions, such as, why you want to have this work experience. For me, I only answer one question. Then you can send your application and you're done. Easy right? It is a very quick easy process. Once the application is complete. Then you will need to wait for your teacher to review your application and you cross your fingers you get it. I have personally only applied for two work experiences with Speakers for School and on the second go I got it! What can you gain from an online experience? I didn't think online work experience would be that great, I was proved wrong. These experiences are really good and you still learn a lot. My company tried to give us the most of it. I have received a pack which was delivered to college for me to do all the activities we have done. I was able to make notes to prepare and gain the information I would need during my 4 days of work experience.
What took place during the sessions? They are really friendly online and will give you the information you need about the activities before starting. I was then in the breakout room to have a group and work in a team on a project, with a budget to build a nuclear waste building. We had to make a decision after we had been given the information. We were having the same experience as them when they did the same project. What did you learn from the experience? I have learned a lot from budgeting, environment issues, engineering, CV writing and more. One time we even had to build our project with materials that they sent to us all by post, so we can even have fun and see each other's ideas or having the staff to do a competition between them on this project and which one was better and I came third with my building!
What would your overall review of the placement be? Overall, work experiences are really useful and helpful to build skills or learning more about a job or section of your interest. This would as well be really helpful for me in the future as I will be able to use this skill I have learned but not only. I will be able to show my interest in the subject I am doing and to show my interest in the place I want to apply like university later. This will make you stand out from other people so you should completely try to apply for work experience as you will always gain something from it.

River Cam Erasure - a call out to visual artists: WATERBODIES On the 21st of June, citizens will be holding a ceremony to declare the rights of the River Cam. The river and tributaries are polluted and in danger, because we take too much water for our city and fields. I’m a poet and activist Alice Willitts, inviting visual artists and poets to respond to our action to declare the personhood of the River Cam. You and I have human rights. This declaration is the first step in getting the river legal rights of personhood like you and me. Under current UK law, this is the best way to give the river a voice at the negotiating table and stop the abuse of its body and habitat. Imagine how clear and sparkling and full of life our river could be if we treated it well. WATERBODIES is the theme. Please respond to the Cam as a person. Making work that shows our love for the Cam is a collective act to reveal the many generations of voices that care about the river. You might ask yourself things like what if the river was my sister, brother, nan how what kind of portrait would I make? What kind of person would the Cam be if it was living its best life? What’s the Cam trying to tell me? What if the river is me and I am the river? My intention is to use the images in the campaign for river rights which means they may be featured in local papers and collect them for an online showcase on the Friends of the River Cam website.
It may be appropriate to show some of the images at the rights ceremony on the 21st so please indicate in your submission if that’s something you’d like to do i.e. hold up the image yourself or have someone hold it up on your behalf. In large part, what I can do with the images will depend on what you all send in but I’ll keep you informed as it develops. Please only send work if you are happy for it to appear publicly. Submissions until noon on 15th June 2021 email: RiverCamErasure@gmail.com All media and formatting accepted. Please send photographs of original artwork as jpegs. Questions? Contact poet Alice Willitts RiverCamErasure@gmail.com To find out more about the Universal Declaration of Rights for the River Cam and the ceremony please go to the Friends of the River Cam

Accommodation advice When considering accommodation options offered by the University of Lincoln, it can be tempting to choose halls with the biggest bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, but you could be missing out on additional options that could better suit your lifestyles, such as location, area, and flatmates’ interests. Options available to you include living in halls, private accommodation or at home and it’s important to think about the various important factors when deciding on your accommodation, which we have covered below.
Cost
Before you start looking for accommodation, we recommend that you work out what options may best suit your budget. For example, a non-en-suite bedroom in Lincoln Courts would typically cost £103.02 per week, which means a 40-week contract would cost £4,120.80. You also would need to consider whether or not your student finance would cover your accommodation fees, or whether you need to find an alternative residence or another source of income, such as a parttime job to help fund this cost. We have a wide selection of accommodation available at the University of Lincoln and varying price ranges to suit as many budgets as possible. From £103.02 - £185.64 per week for an en-suite room or £171.36 for a studio. You can choose from rooms in a variety of shapes and sizes, also reflected in the pricing.
Don’t forget about the other things you will need to budget for, for example, food, course textbooks, and living creature comforts. Location Another important factor when choosing accommodation is the location. All accommodation managed by the University is within a 10-minute walk to the centre of campus, and most of our accommodation is within a 10 to 15-minute walk to the city centre. Facilities At the University of Lincoln, we offer selfcatered accommodation with shared kitchens and living rooms, between 5 and 23 students in some accommodations. If you would prefer to have a kitchen to yourself, there are a selection of studio rooms available. Most of our sites offer en-suite bathrooms with every bedroom. In our Lincoln Courts accommodation, there is a choice of ensuite and non-en-suite rooms available. # Accommodation Sites We have seven different accommodation sites located near and around our Brayford Pool Campus and all are designed to support the different needs and lifestyles of our students. If you’re having difficulty in deciding which site to choose, take a look at some of our most popular sites below. If you would like more information, keep an eye on our website for our open days and information on accommodation.
Cygnet Wharf Situated in high-rise apartment buildings, Cygnet Wharf is a first year-only accommodation site that offers beautiful views of the Brayford Wharf and central Lincoln Campus. Designed to offer traditional halls of residence experience but with modern utilities and fittings, Cygnet Wharf is at the heart of the University of Lincoln’s main campus, with all learning facilities and subject buildings just minutes away.
“I love Cygnet Wharf and how close it is to everything on campus. All the reception staff and security are so helpful and supportive” – student review.
Lincoln Courts Located in the centre of the University Campus, Lincoln Courts is our most budgetfriendly accommodation and contains apartments styled to reflect a residential street, all with modern utilities.
Valentine Court Located just south of campus, Valentine Court is popular with second-year students and is designed in a townhouse-style comprising ensuite flats of either 6 or 13 bedrooms.
Special requirements We understand that there is a range of requirements that students may need help with.
