CAREERS LRSFC ISSUE 16
AND PROGRESSION
Autumn strips away the old, and focuses on what matters The end of the Autumn Term is in sight, and by now, most have adapted to the new teaching approach that our college has adopted. We are settling in for the year ahead and working out systems to see us through, aspiring to be the best that we can be. It seems appropriate then, to build upon the learning foundations in place by highlighting that the end of the Autumn Term traditionally signals two other big changes, and in particular, for our Year 2 students. Firstly, most of you will now be attending regular workshops with Progress Coaches, working to craft a strong application to the UCAS system – destination, University. Yes, thoughts of Progression really do start to matter at this time of year. But of course, a university education isn’t right for everyone, or there will be those of you who want to consider back-up plans too, so please be aware of the second change as we head to Winter: Apprenticeship opportunities are
starting to come through already for starts in Summer, 2021. Please don’t get left behind by waiting to see what your results are in the summer before you apply. These vacancies will be long gone by then. It is the early bird who gets the worm, so start preparing now, consider what opportunities are available, and have a CV ready to go. If you want to discuss preparing for an interview, we can help with that too – just ask. In the meantime, be sure to look at the relevant sections of this, the latest Careers eMag, to see if there are opportunities worth pursuing for a future career.

Student Shop Grow your business and your future secure contact free delivery, and the process is done!
Do I need a business to sell with Student Shop? Absolutely not! Anybody, from small business owners to students with cluttered bedrooms can list their items on Student Shop (as long as they’re appropriate).
About the creator Student Shop is a brand new service coming to Long Road that will allow students to sell their handmade or unwanted items, right in the heart of college! Created by business student James Lakin alongside the Long Road Enterprise Fund, this project has the potential to change the lives of students all across the country, and it’s starting it’s journey here in our college.
So how does it work? To sell your stuff with Student Shop, the process is quite easy. Just head online, fill in the application form and send it to the board of directors for their approval. Once it’s approved, anybody in the college can purchase it from the same website. A simple locker system in the library will provide a
“In my experience creating a company, I’ve found that the hardest part was finding a platform of people who want your product. I felt like I needed to be of a high level to even consider promoting myself on social media, as so many other people were trying. I want to create a platform in which young people can sell their items to their target audience and develop this broad skillset whilst still in education, before life really kicks in.”
-James
Is money the only benefit? Obviously, money is something that everybody craves, but Student Shop can also provide a great opportunity to gain experience in creating a business (or even just selling). The real world can seem scary, so this provides a platform for you to test the waters within the safety of college (and with over 2000 students, there’s a good chance somebody will want what you’re offering).
What should I do if I’m considering starting a small business? “The biggest advice I can give is to just do it now. If you feel you’re ready and passionate, now is the best time to do it, because the later you leave it the more responsibilities you’ll have in life.” Some sound advice from James, although it may sound like a slightly paraphrased Shia LeBeouf speech.
Whilst starting a business can be a big commitment, and you need to understand the amount of work required, it can definitely pay off, so now is a perfect time to start. For more advice, head to the Student Shop website when it’s live to find heaps of tips from top business-owners from Long Road. Then, when COVID-19 permits it, James and the team at Student Shop will be taking meetings with students who need further help with this. Basically, there’s no reason for you not to start now!
When will Student Shop open? As soon as possible! The target for launch is December, so keep your eyes peeled around college for more information and help signing up to this incredible opportunity.

Kennedys is a global law firm with expertise in litigation and dispute resolution, particularly in the insurance and liability industries. With over 2,000 people worldwide across 40 offices in the UK and Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, we have some of the most respected legal minds in their fields.
We offer a vibrant and supportive working environment built upon our core values of being approachable, straightforward, supportive and distinctive. Our values are at the core of who we are and what make us a great firm to work for. We are passionate about offering an alternative route to university and offer Legal Apprenticeships aimed at school leavers who have completed their A Levels, designed to help springboard you into a successful career by providing you with a mixture of studying and learning within the workplace so that you can earn while you learn. We offer two year Paralegal Apprenticeships across our UK offices, that results in students obtaining a Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Services. This is equivalent to
the first year of a law undergraduate degree. Once the two year paralegal apprenticeship has been completed, apprentices who would like to continue their learning may have the opportunity to join the Level 7 solicitor apprenticeship. This takes four years to complete and involves the completion of a (Hons) degree in legal practice and will lead to qualifying as a solicitor six years after
leaving school. Our apprenticeships are offered in conjunction with our learning provider, BPP. We believe our apprentices are a very important part of our talent pipeline.
How much responsibility do Legal Apprentices have at Kennedys? From the moment our apprentices join Kennedys they are directly involved with live cases and as little as three months in, supervisors are encouraging apprentices to handle their own work. We believe that this helps build responsibility and confidence within our apprentices. As well as having a dedicated supervisor at Kennedys, students will also have a tutor and a skills coach at BPP, to ensure they have all the support they need at work and with their studies.
We know this year has been challenging for a lot of young people, who have missed out on undertaking work experience, maybe within the sector you wish to work within in the future. This is why Kennedys have launched our very own Virtual Work Experience Programme. Designed for students who are interested in Law and would like to find out what type of work both our apprentices and trainees do here at Kennedys. The four module programme offers real work experience where you will complete tasks to gain legal analytical skills, develop legal knowledge of the insurance industry, and learn critical legal communication, research, and drafting skills. Allowing you to take the first step of your legal career with a global law firm that does things differently. Once you have completed you will receive a certificate that you can add to your CV! To find out more about our legal apprenticeships and to register for the Kennedys Work Experience Programme, please visit our website.
When do applications open at Kennedys? Applications for our 2021 Apprenticeships opened on the 1 September 2020 and will close on the 28 February 2021. The apprenticeship will then start in September 2021.

The Sutton Trust US Programme is designed to support students from state schools across the UK to explore US study and access leading universities. It includes two virtual residentials before all students spend a week in the US staying on campus at a leading US university and visiting a variety of other American universities. Please note that the health and safety of our young people and our staff takes top priority. This may mean we need to adjust our plans, and possibly deliver US weeks in a virtual format. If you are accepted onto the programme we will provide further details regarding US weeks. An optional second year of the programme supports students to apply to US universities alongside their UCAS options. In the past nine years, we have helped more than 450 British students get places and funding at top US universities. The programme is founded and funded by the Sutton Trust, the UK’s leading social mobility charity, and delivered in partnership with the Fulbright Commission, who are experts in helping UK students study in the US.

"We have helped more than 450 British students get places and funding at top US universities"
The programme is free for students. All costs are covered by the programme – including travel, food, accommodation, admissions test preparation and more.
The more of these you meet, the more likely you are to get a place on the programme. You must submit their application by 17 January 2021. However, we strongly advise they get started earlier, as the application form requires some thinking! You also must nominate someone at their school to fill out a reference alongside their application. School references are due by 21 January 2021.
There’s lots more information on our website: https://us.suttontrust.com and the application form can also be found there. Beyond the Sutton Trust US Programme, Fulbright offers advice and support for students, teachers and parents looking at US universities. Check out our guide to US study.
