TREATMENT PLANNING FACIAL AESTHETICS – A COSMETIC SURGEON’S PERSPECTIVE

To achieve optimum treatment outcome, aesthetics of the entire face need to be considered in orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment planning. The role of facial aesthetics in society and patient motivation to change their aesthetic presentation will be discussed as a foundation for treatment planning. The lecture will review from a surgeon’s perspective, how to analyze facial features and imbalances that if not addressed, will result in sub-optimal outcomes when patients present to get their “teeth straight” or to “correct their bite”. A review of aesthetic procedures that can enhance facial aesthetics for both the adolescent and adult patient will be provided. Additionally, methods to discuss these findings with patients to determine if their real objectives will be addressed will be presented. WHAT INFORMATION CAN WE USE FROM IMAGING FACIAL MORPHOLOGIES?

Orthodontics has evolved in the recent years towards a soft tissue paradigm. This presentation will focus on work that has been performed on understanding facial morphology since 2000. Some of the initial research focuses on the use of laser scanners and has progressed towards the use of structured light systems. The presentation will highlight the use of technology on the 3D virtual patient, facial growth, populations studies and patients with craniofacial anomalies / deformities. Chung How Kau, BDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, MOrth Dr Chung H. Kau is Chairman and Professor at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He actively contributes and publishes in the orthodontic literature and currently has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, conference papers and lectures. His research areas of interest include the 3D virtual patient and translational 3D clinical research.

MACRO-AESTHETICS OF ORTHOGNATHIC TREATMENT - NAVIGATING THE PATH OF EMOTIONAL CHANGE

A series of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical cases will be presented. In addition to comparing pre-treatment and post-treatment records, treatment progress records will be correlated with archwire sequencing and appointment frequency. Individual case analysis will emphasize the objectives of patient-specific facial change but will also lend itself to understanding the emotional investment in each treatment. Individual patient experiences, beyond the anticipated treatment outcomes, will be specifically highlighted. Parameters for assessing successful macro-aesthetic change will be summarized. Lorne S. Kamelchuk, DDS, MSc, DOrtho, FRCD(C) Dr. Kamelchuk received his D.D.S. with distinction from the University of Alberta in 1993 and subsequently received an M.Sc. in Oral Biology in 1994 while completing research on comparative hard and soft tissue imaging of the adolescent TMJ. He then completed graduate studies in Orthodontics at the University of Toronto in 1998. Dr. Kamelchuk holds the designations of Certified Specialist in Orthodontics and Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He is a recipient of the University of Alberta Stomatology Fellowship, a McIntyre Research Fund Bursary, and the Aaron L. Posen Award in Orthodontics. Currently in private practice in Calgary, Dr. Kamelchuk is also a Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Alberta.

BIOMECHANICS AND AESTHETIC STRATEGIES IN OUR BUSY PRACTICE

Achieving aesthetic goals has achieved prominence in recent years in hierarchy of treatment goals. Excessive overbite, openbite, midline discrepancy and canted occlusal plane can significantly affect smile and aesthetics of patients. These problems require specific mechanics incorporated into the wires. This presentation will describe mechanics shown sequentially in different patients with aesthetics related problems. In addition this presentation will describe studies currently in progress at University of Connecticut regarding development of smart wires, surgical and vibratory methods to enhance speed of treatment . Ravindra Nanda, B.D.S, M.D.S, PhD Dr. Ravindra Nanda is at present UConn Alumni Endowed Chair, and Professor and Head of the Department of Craniofacial Sciences and Chair of division of Orthodontics, University of Connecticut, Farmington, Connecticut, U.S.A. He received his dental training from Lucknow University, India in 1964. He received his orthodontic training first at Lucknow, India and then from Nymegen, The Netherlands and the University of Connecticut. He also received a Ph.D. for the University of Nymegen in 1969. He was an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at Loyola University, Illinois from 1970 to 1972 and since 1972 he has been associated with the University of Connecticut. Dr. Nanda has done extensive research during the last forty years in the areas of cleft lip and palate, orthopedic forces and on long-term growth with orthognathic surgery in adolescents. In recent years, his major thrust has been in development of orthodontic wires, clinical orthodontic trials and application of biomechanics in a busy orthodontic practice. Dr. Nanda has been author and co-author of five orthodontic books and more than one hundred scientific and clinical articles in major journals. He is on the editorial board of ten different national and international orthodontic journals. He is an associate editor of Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. He is an active member of various organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists, European Orthodontic Society and Edward H. Angle Society. Dr. Nanda is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has given numerous named lectures at national and international societies including Mershon Lecture at American Association of Orthodontics and Sheldon Friel Lecture at 2011 EOS Congress. Dr.Nanda is a co-editor of a book Retention and Stability. His most recent books are Biomechanics in Clinical Orthodontics and Biomechanic and Esthetic Strategies In Clinical Orthodontics, Temporary Anchorage Devices in Orthodontics. His new book is titled Current Therapy in Orthodontics.

INTER-DISCIPLINARY TREATMENT PLANNING IN CREATING THE IDEAL SMILE

In prosthodontics, the aesthetic outcome of the final restoration is dependent on the interaction between hard and soft tissues and success is achieved when the final restoration satisfies both the periodontal and prosthodontic requirements. This presentation will review the interdisciplinary relationship of the restorative, orthodontic and periodontal aspects of treatment, in establishing the ‘pink and white aesthetics’ in restorative dentistry. A systematic approach to the diagnosis, treatment planning and management of these aesthetically challenging cases will be presented. Jeffrey Ceyhan, BSc, DDS, MSD, Cert. Pros, FRCD(C) Dr. Ceyhan obtained his DDS degree from McGill University and received his MSD and specialty certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington. Dr. Ceyhan is a published author in peer reviewed journals and textbooks, has lectured across North America and is an affiliate professor in the restorative department and the graduate prosthodontic program at the University of Washington. Dr. Ceyhan is in private practice in Calgary, specializing in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics. Dr. Ceyhan is a fellow and an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

DENTOFACIAL AESTHETICS AS PERCEIVED BY LAY PUBLIC – A SYSTEMATIC SUMMARY OF WHAT WE KNOW

Dental professionals are able to significantly affect tooth-related aesthetic factors such as tooth position, shape, size, and proportion. Also periodontal factors such as midline deviation, smile arc, buccal corridors, occlusal plane orientation, and gingival display can be modified. TREATMENT PLANNING FACIAL AESTHETICS – A COSMETIC SURGEON’S PERSPECTIVE

To achieve optimum treatment outcome, aesthetics of the entire face need to be considered in orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment planning. WHAT INFORMATION CAN WE USE FROM IMAGING FACIAL MORPHOLOGIES?

Orthodontics has evolved in the recent years towards a soft tissue paradigm. This presentation will focus on work that has been performed on understanding facial morphology since 2000. Some of the initial research focuses on the use of laser scanners and has progressed towards the use of structured light systems. The presentation will highlight the use of technology on the 3D virtual patient, facial growth, populations studies and patients with craniofacial anomalies / deformities. Chung How Kau, BDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, MOrth Dr Chung H. Kau is Chairman and Professor at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He actively contributes and publishes in the orthodontic literature and currently has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, conference papers and lectures. His research areas of interest include the 3D virtual patient and translational 3D clinical research.

MACRO-AESTHETICS OF ORTHOGNATHIC TREATMENT - NAVIGATING THE PATH OF EMOTIONAL CHANGE

A series of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical cases will be presented. In addition to comparing pre-treatment and post-treatment records, treatment progress records will be correlated with archwire sequencing and appointment frequency. Individual case analysis will emphasize the objectives of patient-specific facial change but will also lend itself to understanding the emotional investment in each treatment. Individual patient experiences, beyond the anticipated treatment outcomes, will be specifically highlighted. Parameters for assessing successful macro-aesthetic change will be summarized. Lorne S. Kamelchuk, DDS, MSc, DOrtho, FRCD(C) Dr. Kamelchuk received his D.D.S. with distinction from the University of Alberta in 1993 and subsequently received an M.Sc. in Oral Biology in 1994 while completing research on comparative hard and soft tissue imaging of the adolescent TMJ. He then completed graduate studies in Orthodontics at the University of Toronto in 1998. Dr. Kamelchuk holds the designations of Certified Specialist in Orthodontics and Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He is a recipient of the University of Alberta Stomatology Fellowship, a McIntyre Research Fund Bursary, and the Aaron L. Posen Award in Orthodontics. Currently in private practice in Calgary, Dr. Kamelchuk is also a Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Alberta.

Susan Hastie received her undergrad in Family Studies and a Master’s in Counselling. Her practice extends to workplaces where she serves to come alongside others to develop healthy work relationships using Disc workplace profile, conflict resolution, confidence seminars, assertiveness training, and various tools and teaching methods to strengthen relationships, increase communication and improve effectiveness. She specializes in trauma and grief, addictions, marriage relationships, self esteem and identity, assertiveness, and depression in her counseling practice. She is in the final stages of completing a Facilitators Guide for professionals working with trauma groups. She supervises intern students completing Master degrees. What’s the most unforgettable tour in the Canadian Rockies? A scenic day spent exploring the highest road in Canada – the Icefields Parkway. On this journey, witness the evidence left behind by many ice ages – icy blue glaciers that cling to the face of several blue glaciers that cling to the face of several majestic mountains. The highlight of this day is a stop at the Athabasca Glacier which seeps down from the central core of the Columbia Icefield. Board a specially designed Ice Explorer and ride up into the glacier, passing an ancient forest and spectacular viewpoints. Then, step out on to this glacier, which is the largest accumulation of ice south of the Arctic, and christen the moment with a sip of the cold glacier water that flows through narrow crevasses. Lunch will be served at historic Nu-Ti-Jah Lodge; built throughout the 1930s and expanded in the 1950s, Num-Ti-Jah Lodge was built by Rockies’ legend Jimmy Simpson, who first stepped on the property at the turn of the century. The interior of the lodge features custom built rock fireplaces, intricate log cabin architecture, artwork produced by local artists, and a geological rock collection. On the return, be on the lookout for wildlife including elk, moose, bighorn sheep, black bear and coyote!

You will have the chance to experience a “locals” favourite mountain bike route, followed by flying high to the top of the Banff Gondola. The Goat Creek Trail is a beautiful 18km (one way) bike trail from Canmore to Banff. It winds its way over dirt and gravel paths along the valley behind the famous Rundle Mountain. The ride is easier if you start at the Canmore trailhead, as there is an elevation drop of 1000 feet to Banff. You and your bike will be shuttled to the Goat Creek trailhead in Canmore for a self-guided ride back to Banff. Discover Banff personnel will be along the trail to help direct bikers along the way. Upon arrival back in Banff, take the gondola up to the 7,500 ft summit of Sulphur Mountain and enjoy the panoramic view of the entire Bow Valley. Spend some free time here and take the winding staircase up to the uppermost level and get a new perspective of the world using the giant compass. Box lunch will be provided.
