CLASS II CORRECTORS (ESPRIT CLASS II CORRECTOR)

During this session and panel discussion Dr. Miller will outline the differences and advantages of the Esprit Spring recently developed by Opal Orthodontics. The advantages of a hidden spring and distal plunger as well as a comparison of force levels, and its use in direct archwire, XBow and class III correction will be discussed. Overall, the focus will be on improving patient comfort during the class II correction process. Dr. Robert Miller, BS, DMD† Dr. Miller earned his B.S. degree in Zoology from Clemson University in 1979 and his DMD degree in 1983 from The Medical University of South Carolina. After dental school, Dr. Miller completed an orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia in 1985, and then served in the USAF, as Chief of Orthodontics at Clark Air Base in the Philippines for three years. Dr. Miller began practicing in Culpeper in 1988 and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1992. He is a pioneer in the area of orthopedic correctors, having developed the Flip Lock™ Herbst device in the early 1990's. More recently, he assisted Dr. Duncan Higgins, the inventor of the Crossbow™ device, to broaden its use as an efficient overbite corrector and our most state of the art device used just before braces. CLASS II CORRECTION MADE EZTM

Gone are the days of headgears and steel ligatures. The ForsusTM FRD Corrector is an innovative solution for the treatment of Class II malocclusion. Treatment efficiency is enhanced by the consistent, long-lasting force delivered by the appliance, without the need for patient compliance. The ForsusTM appliance allows for increased efficiency in the treatment of Class II malocclusions, leading to reduced treatment time and reliable results time after time. Dr. Mohammad R. Razavi, DDS, MSD Education • 2005 MSD, Certificate in Orthodontics, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH • 2002 DDS, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH • 1997 Honors Bachelor of Science, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON Appointments 2012 – Present: University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB – Clinical Instructor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry 2005-Present: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH – Assistant Clinical Professor, School of Dental Medicine, Dept. of Orthodontics 2006-2010: Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH-Consultant, Dept. THE CROSSBOW® CLASS II CORRECTOR “WHY BOTHER WITH AN EXTRA PHASE ONE APPLIANCE?”

The focus will be on: 1. Combining Class II correction with maxillary expansion. 2. Distalizing the upper bicuspids and molars only, allowing over-correction of the Class II buccal segments without over-retracting the upper incisors. Passive upper incisor retraction minimizes root resorption. 3. Allowing the side effects of the Class II springs to rebound before phase two braces. This avoids dealing with the side effects late in treatment with a single phase approach. It also decreases the time in braces and minimizes decalcification. Dr. Duncan Ward Higgins, DDS, MSD, FRCD(C)† Duncan has two Canadian patents related to the Crossbow® Class II Corrector, or Xbow®. There are three research articles on Xbow in the Angle Orthodontist, one in the AJODO, and one in the European Journal of Orthodontics. His indirect bonding technique was in Seminars in Orthodontics. Duncan has lectured internationally on indirect bonding and Xbow to groups including the CAO, Angle Society, PCSO, GLAO, and MASO. He is a regular lecturer at UBC. Duncan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists in Canada.

SUS2 CORRECTOR

Class II correction devices are commonly used in orthodontics and exist in many declension. Literature reviews show that such devices do not appear to cause any significant changes in mandibular length and their effectiveness in correcting class II malocclusion can be explained by a combination of some skeletal (mainly maxillary) and dentoalveolar (maxillary and mandibular) modifications. The SUS2 corrector device will be presented using bondable head gear tube and self-ligating mandibular molar tube. A case presentation will be used to explain how to use the SUS2 device in a successful manner. Dr. Sylvain Chamberland, DMD, FRCD(c), MSc. Dr. Chamberland received his DMD degree from Laval University in 1983, a Certificate in Orthodontics from University of Montreal in 1990 and a Master degree in dental science in 2008 from University Laval where he was part time clinical instructor and teacher at the undergraduate program of the dental faculty from 1991 to 2008. He lectures in several graduate programs and scientific meetings in the US, Canada and Europe. He is a published author. Dr. Chamberland is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Member of d’Angle East Society of Orthodontists.

3D IMAGE-AIDED TREATMENT OF IMPACTED AND TRANSPOSED TEETH

Three-dimensional (3-D) imaging rendered by Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) facilitates refined diagnosis and enables fine-tuning of treatment plans in specific types of cases. In patients with impacted and transposed teeth, the information derived is particularly important in enhancing efficiency of treatment, rates of success and minimizing collateral damage during treatment. In his talk, Dr. Kapila will present the indications and uses of CBCT imaging in diagnosis and treatment planning for impacted and transposed teeth, including protocols for communicating with the surgeon to achieve optimal surgical access, bond placement and soft tissue support, and the utilization of this information to implement efficient three-dimensional mechanics. He will also discuss the use of refined spring designs to tract the teeth along the shortest path through bone while minimizing damage to roots of neighboring teeth. The attendees will learn about: 1. The use of CBCT in refining the diagnosis of impacted and transposed teeth. 2. Defining 3-D treatment plans, surgical access, bond placement and biomechanical objectives for impacted and transposed teeth. 3. Designing and implementing optimal traction auxiliaries for 3-D tooth control while minimizing damage to neighboring teeth and adverse movements of anchor teeth. Dr. Sunil Kapila, DDS, MS, PhD Dr. Sunil Kapila is the Robert W. Browne Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. COMPUTER-AIDED BRACKET SYSTEMS: THE QUEST FOR INCREASED EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY

Orthodontists are continually searching for treatment techniques that are more effective and efficient. The ideal orthodontic bracket system would allow orthodontists to provide quality orthodontic care in less time and fewer appointments. Rapidly expanding computer technologies have been developed to optimize the design and placement of orthodontic brackets in an attempt to realize these goals. Are these new technologies, the quantum leap to a new generation of orthodontics? This presentation is an evidencebased review of the effectiveness and efficiency of these computer-aided systems. Dr. Lorne D. Koroluk, DMD, MSD, MS, FCRCD(C) Dr. Koroluk received his dental degree from the University of Saskatchewan and obtained master’s degrees and certificates in pediatric dentistry from Indiana University and in orthodontics from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Mohammad R.

MAXIMIZING THE IMPACT OF YOUR INFLUENCE: TOOLS FROM EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PERFORMANCE

Have you ever noticed that when certain types of people start speaking in a group, others stop whatever they’re doing and start listening with total fascination? Other more competent people keep trying to get their message across, but as soon as they open their mouths, there’s almost no one paying attention. The session will promote strategies and tools to demonstrate: • The Law of Psychological Reciprocity: how to be convincing and foster agreement/compliance • How to build certainty and positively impact the outcome of interactions between yourself and others • Communication is about what we feel, not what we say. How to orient your outlook and your listening to ensure a powerful climate of trust • How to use our five senses to create the desired emotional energy we want and anchor ourselves in the right “state” to succeed • How to build certainty within, demonstrating the conviction of a leader that inspires others to follow and go the extra mile Ms. Isabelle Fontaine Isabelle Fontaine is a powerful and entertaining speaker recognized for her refreshing ability to touch and inspire people. Through her high-energy presentations, that are both entertaining and highly educational, she reveals a genuine sense of humor and a simple, yet deeply impactful approach. Being an educator for many years has enabled her to develop a unique perspective on human behavior. Ms. Fontaine has spent several years developing and delivering courses on the relationship between mind and personal and professional growth at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, University de Sherbrooke and University du Quebec. The new tools will rejuvenate and inspire you to embrace and simplify the art of influence and relationships while achieving what you want. OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN CHILDREN: HOW TO DETECT AND HOW TO TREAT

Sleep related breathing problems (SRBD) constitute a recently recognized common chronic disorder in children and adolescents that can range from snoring to obstructive sleep apnea. A compromised airway during sleep can have a dramatic impact on systemic health and development, including cardio-vascular consequences, delayed growth, concentration and behavior issues. Most children are treated with excision of tonsils and adenoids, which has not been proven to completely abolish apnea events in all cases. Craniofacial anomalies can also contribute to the development of SRBD. Early detection is critical, and proper referral/treatment should be included in the orthodontic evaluation. Dr. Andrée Montpetit Dr Andrée Montpetit is a professor at the Orthodontic department of the University of Montreal. She received her dental degree in 2004, and completed her Master’s and specialty formation in 2010 at the aforementioned University. Her Master’s thesis subject was Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in adults, and she now concentrates her research in the child population. She is currently involved in a multicenter nationwide government funded project to help determine diagnostic craniofacial criteria that could be indicative of OSA in children. The goal of her research team is to increase public awareness of this problem and the possible developmental risks for undiagnosed and untreated children.
