Topics: 1. Taking your paper office into paperless # Dr. Rano Burton, BDS, MSC, DIP.ORTHO, FRCDS Integrating today's technology into an existing practice.

2. Maxillary Molar Distalization * Dr. Bruce Oliver Many angle class II malocclusions require distalization of the maxillary molars. Extra oral traction using headgear is a treatment utilized; however, patient cooperation and compliance can be a problem. Other treatments involved temporary anchorage devices which the patient may not accept. This presentation will address a non invasive method of facilitating distalization of maxillary molars.

3. Facial pain, Headaches and Migraines: Beyond your simple TMJ pain # Dr. Lun Wang, DDS, MSc, FRCD (C) Has head pain reached epidemic proportions? Many with chronic head pain that have not found relief with traditional medical treatments. This is because they are suffering from "Dental Headaches". Symptoms include TMD, bruxism, dental fractures, but may also include migraines, whiplash, and sleep disorders. Drugs are not the answer, advanced dentistry with medical rehabilitation techniques is needed. Dentists with extra training are the best choice for the treatment of "Dental Headaches".

4. Orthodontic Treatment in the community for Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) # Dr. Kathy Russell, BSc, DDS, MSC This round table discussion will review: 1. general care provided for patients with CLP at the Hospital setting prior to reaching the Community Orthodontists, 2. aspects of diagnosis and treatment planning for orthodontic treatment specific to this group of patients, and 3. Orthodontic treatment goals and options. We will cover a wide range and topics from the basics to advanced specifics of treatment, and will be determined by the level of discussion created by those at the table.

5. “Life in the Fast Lane” (Eagles, 1976) * Sponsored by Dr. Howard Steiman BSc, DDS, DIP.ORTHO Differentiation of your office can help grow your practice. Incorporating Acceledent into your patient's treatment can give you that opportunity. This presentation will explore the physiology, usage and value of Acceledent as a marketing tool for Orthodontists.

6. Low Intensity Pulse UltraSound (LIPUS) * Sponsored by Dr. Tarek El-Bialy, PhD, FRCD (C), EMA, ABO Low Intensity Pulse UltraSound (LIPUS) has made it possible for orthodontists to accelerate tooth movement while reducing root resorption resulting in shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment.

7. Using Invisalign to increase patient acceptance of combined ortho-surgical treatment # Dr. Athena Papadakis, BDS, FDS RCS, FRCD (C), M.Sc. Can we treat severe malocclusions with an esthetic combined Invisalign-Orthognathic surgical approach? Is the treatment time shortened? Is the treatment outcome as good as with conventional fixed appliances?

CONTROVERSIES IN CLINICAL ORTHODONTICS – WHAT WORKS AND WHAT WASTES OUR TIME?

There are many options available to the clinical orthodontist in the treatment of Class II malocclusions and most seem to work, so does it matter what we use? We are also bombarded with claims of accelerated orthodontic treatment accompanied by case reports and endorsements but what are the strength of these claims? Dr Miles will review the clinical controversies surrounding Class II treatment and examine which treatments appear to be more effective and efficient. He will also examine the biological rationale for the various techniques claiming to accelerate dental movement and present clinical cases and the results of ongoing clinical trials into accelerated orthodontics. Those attending will be able to apply this knowledge with their own clinical experience to offer their patients the best information regarding their treatment options. You are guaranteed an experience that is motivating, provocative, informative and entertaining - and perhaps heavily biased towards 80’s new wave music? Dr. Peter Miles, BDSc, MDS, FICD Dr. Peter Miles received his dental degree from the University of Queensland, Australia, and his Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and is Australian Orthodontic Board certified. He is a visiting lecturer at Seton Hill University, USA and was a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland for 11 years. He is a reviewer for several journals including the AJODO and is on the editorial board of the Angle Orthodontist. Peter has over 40 publications involving clinical trials relating to treatment efficiency and is one of the editors of the book ‘Evidence Based Clinical Orthodontics’.

CAO New & Younger Orthodontists Members’ Meeting & Luncheon OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO: New & Recent Graduates • Current Residents • Any other interested parties

Off The (Orthodontic) Record

Speaker: Marco Dolfi, LLB

Today’s young professionals face an infinite number of challenges on a daily basis. The heart of Michael’s talk will be the act of sharing for the benefit of the new and younger members of the CAO. Michael will discuss his struggles with mental illness, and the affects that mental illness have had on his life. He will share his views on mental health and what he sees are the keys to coming back from illness and being a caregiver for someone affected. Michael will tell stories of how, simply by opening up about his own journey, lives have been changed and been saved. Michael Landsberg has been a prominent face and voice on the Canadian sports scene since 1984. With his unique style, he quickly became one of this country's most polarizing personalities- perceived by some as forthright and others as arrogant.

In 2009, people began to agree more about Michael after he publicly shared his then decade long struggle with severe depression and anxiety. Since then, he has become one of this country's loudest voices – pushing for all Canadians to see mental illness as a sickness, not a weakness. Michael frequently used his platform as producer and host of Off the Record on TSN to change people's opinion of mental illness. Michael has been an official spokesperson for Bell Let's Talk Day since that initiative was launched. In 2015 Michael launched his own initiative, a not-for-profit, called #SickNotWeak. #SickNotWeak is dedicated to changing the way Canadians see mental illness. SickNotWeak.com gives a voice to celebrities and everyday folks to share their struggles and their views on mental health issues.

This session is complimentary but we would appreciate your indication on the Conference Registration Form if you plan to attend so conference organizers can ensure the room size and the food requirements are sufficient for the number of people interested in attending.

CONTROVERSIES AND ADVANCES IN SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS

Improvements in Orthognathic Surgery and Surgical Orthodontics over the past 10 years have been remarkable. The advent of Digital Planning for the aid in diagnosis and surgical planning have revolutionized how these surgeries are performed and improved the outcomes tremendously. CT technology, virtual planning, digital models, virtual surgery, prefabricated splints and guides, prefabricated and prebent plates and screws, orthodontic mechanical improvements, Invisalign, Surgery First, TADs are all discussions rarely presented previously. Contemporary surgery for orthodontic support has changed. Orthognathic surgical results are superior now with digital planning and we can now easily perform mandible first and pay close attention to TMJ health. This presentation will focus on many of these small topics. Clinical examples will be shown and recommendations provided for the surgical orthodontic team to improve results for their patients. Dr. Marco F. Caminiti, BSc., DDS., MEd., Dip OMFS, FRCD(C) Dr. Caminiti is a director of the Dentofacial Deformity Program at the University of Toronto and his practice is limited to hospital-based surgical orthodontics. He is involved in many research areas and hopes to answer some common orthodontically driven questions: Can you do orthognathic surgery with Invisalign? Is digital planning better for orthognathic surgery? How do you deal with impacted second molars? Is a bone borne appliance better for SARPE’s? Is mandible-first, double jaw surgery better? Does surgery first make sense? Are TADs and anchor plates just for complex cases? These and other advancements and controversies will be presented.

ALIGNERS CAN’T TREAT THAT CASE!?!?!

Do you have a 2003 mindset or a 2017 mindset? Are you behind, with, or ahead of the market trends? How is your practice poised for future growth and relevancy? After making the case showing better efficiencies and profitability as to why even bother shifting your practice towards one based on aligners, Dr. Nicozisis will show an array of cases that you will first think ‘Aligners can’t treat that case?’. Case types will include, anterior open bites, surgical cases, impacted teeth, crossbites, extractions, fixed functional appliances simultaneous with aligners, Class 2 and 3 cases, Phase 1, etc. This presentation will dispel the ‘alleged’ limitations of aligners. It will change your mindset that aligners are a legitimate orthodontic appliance with a broad range of applicability for the majority of cases you are treating. Dr. Jonathan L. Nicozisis, DMD, MS † Dr. Jonathan Nicozisis has been in orthodontic private practice in Princeton, NJ since 1999. He completed his dental education at the University of Pennsylvania before attending Temple University for his orthodontic residency earning his specialty certificate in orthodontics and a master’s degree in oral biology. During his training, he also completed an externship at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was involved with the care of patients with craniofacial syndromes. Dr. Nicozisis has been awarded membership to the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Nicozisis is a member of Invisalign® National Speaker’s Bureau and Clinical Research Network where he helps conduct research and development of new technologies and improvements to the Invisalign System. He has given frequent lectures for Align Technology for Invisalign worldwide teaching other orthodontists advanced techniques to correct complicated malocclusions. Dr. Nicozisis is also the founding orthodontist and a scientific advisory board member of BAS Medical (now Corthera), a development stage company founded in 2003 with a mission to develop and market a novel technology to accelerate and improve the stability of orthodontic treatments using the hormone Relaxin as a therapeutic adjunct on orthodontic therapy. Dr. Nicozisis’ master’s research is the basis for BAS Medical innovative research. In 2010, Corthera was acquired by Novartis.

CAD/CAM ORTHODONTICS – PRESENT AND THE FUTURE

Digital orthodontics has made major strides in recent decades. Most major manufacturers believe it will be one of the most significant evolutionary changes to the practice of orthodontics in the next 10 years and will aid in making orthodontic outcomes better and reducing treatment time in the process. This presentation will explore current CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) systems in orthodontics and how these systems are likely to evolve in the near future. Dr. Brandon Owen, DDS, MS Dr. Brandon Owen is in private practice in Fort Collins, Colorado. His professional memberships include the Angle Society, American Board of Orthodontics, Seattle Study Club, Spear Study Club, and he is the Secretary and sits on the board of the American Association of Lingual Orthodontics. He was offered positions as a lead consultant for development of digital orthodontics with both 3M Oral Care and American Orthodontics. He served as the lead consultant for GAC Dentsply from 2012 for lingual orthodontics and as a digital consultant. He is proficient in 10 digital bracket systems (7 buccal systems/3 Lingual), and has 2 patents pending on digital braces concepts.

APPLYING EVIDENCE TO IMPROVE CLINICAL PRACTICE

Okay, well here’s the scenario…the doctor has gone to another meeting and is all hyped up about the latest gadget they bought or technique they want to try out (which we all know at least half will end up in the back of a cupboard somewhere, right!). Dr Miles will discuss the options for treating Class II malocclusions and what the pros and cons are affecting your doctor’s choices. He will also discuss some of the techniques for accelerating orthodontic treatment and what the current evidence is. Packed with useful clinical information and musical interludes, the participant should leave enthused, educated and entertained. ‘SUCCESS’ BY IMPROVING PATIENT COMPLIANCE!

Imagine a world where the patient actually does their recommended home care. We know that when our patients are compliant between visits to the office they can reach optimal oral health faster. They are healthy throughout treatment, their appointments are more efficient and effective, treatment time is kept on track and we end up having a happy team because we see the positive impact we are having on their lives and their oral health. Getting people to adopt new routines and habits can be tough but it all starts with the dental office experience. How we communicate, the tools we provide and the on-going follow-up to reinforce the importance of their self-care all play a part in getting patients sustainably compliant. We cannot control what our patients do at home, but we can have a significant influence on the importance they put on it. We can work to get our entire team on board with how we communicate, how we handle objections, and how we engage the patient so that our patient takes ownership of their own oral health. We’ll talk about a formula for success that dramatically increases the chance that we can drive patient compliance way, way up! Participants of this course will have the opportunity to: • Self-assess how well your current practice is able to engage and motivate your patients to maintain their self-care routines. • Recognize and discuss the elements of a patient centered approach, a critical step in improving home care compliance. • Learn strategies to engage your patients to help them achieve optimal oral health. I invite you to join me for this 1.5 hour presentation. My goal is that you will leave with tangible ideas on how you can improve the level of sustained engagement you are able to maintain with your patients. If that’s important to you, I look forward to your attendance and participation! Ms. Kathleen Bokrossy, RDH Kathleen Bokrossy, RDH, entrepreneur, presenter, author and coach, has been bringing engaging energy to the dental profession for the last 30 years. Kathleen is on the Speakers Bureau for P & G, Crest & Oral B, she is the president of rdhu, and QA Coach, where her vision is to help ‘Transform the Dental Hygiene Experience’. Kathleen works closely with dental practices to help them thrive in today’s marketplace.

HOW TO CARE AND WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A SURGICAL ORTHODONTIC PATIENT

Surgical Orthodontics involves a broad umbrella of surgical procedures to help in the management of your patients. This presentation will present the different surgeries: simple extractions; complicated extractions; impacted teeth; placement of TADs; Accelerated Orthodontics and a focus on Orthognathic Surgery. The goal is for the learner to understand why the surgeries are performed by a review of the problems we need to treat (diagnosis); what exactly is involved; and importantly, what are the common side effects and the complications to anticipate. This way, you will be better armed at communicating and helping your patients that may be experiencing the after-effects of an oftentimes major surgery. Dr.
