The first year of the Canadian Nutrition Society has been exciting and characterized by growth and opportunity for the professional nutrition community in Canada. Our organization has identified key goals and objectives in four areas: Outreach to Nutrition Professionals and Scientists; Outreach to Nutrition Industry; Outreach to Government and the Public; and Outreach to Trainees. We aim to provide a unified voice for those engaged in furthering nutrition as a way of maintaining health and preventing and treating disease. Our main areas of activity are undertaken in the area of the annual meeting, strategies to support, develop and enhance membership and in developing communication vehicles to facilitate and enhance the nutrition network in Canada. We had a wonderful annual meeting in Edmonton with over 400 in attendance, multiple symposia and venues for exchange of scientific information. In addition, it was an opportunity to recognize excellence in nutrition in Canada through the awards program. From a membership perspective, we have grown and are undertaking active strategies to recruit members from all parts of Canada and all disciplines. It is our goal to identify member benefits to meet the needs of the varied community. Our communication strategies include regular members’ updates on the bilingual website that is easy to navigate, and which contains useful information for members and other communications such as the Nutrition Forum de Nutrition. New developments for nutrition in Canada have been enabled through the bringing together of the clinical and research communities in nutrition under the banner of the Canadian Nutrition Society. There have been three main areas of development. The first is building strategic alliances, and we have targeted strategies with American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Dietitians of Canada, Canadian Council on Food and Nutrition, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Canadian Food Information Safety and Technology Group. Another main thrust for the organization is that of developing a platform relative to advocacy. It is ultimately the Society’s goal to impact nutrition health policy and public education through effective and targeted strategies. A core group has been formed to address this, inclusive of Dr. Khush Jeejeebhoy, Dr. Mary L’Abbe, Dr. Katherine Gray-Donald and me. Another area of activity relates to the development of the Canadian Foundation for Nutrition Science and Practice. Our goal is to establish a not-for-profit foundation through which we may continue to support a nutrition agenda in Canada. Our organization is built upon the strength and commitment of its volunteers. I believe we

Nick was the researcher responsible for antioxidants and fat soluble vitamins at the Nutrition Research Division and had been working on analysing vitamin D and markers of bone health for the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study, the Canadian Health Measures Survey and for a survey on Maternal and Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals, among other projects. Nick obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Nutritional Sciences in 1989 and originally joined Health Canada in 1993 as a Regulatory Toxicologist after working as a postdoctoral fellow in universities in the US as well as at Agriculture Canada. After a few years, he returned to his formal training, joining the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences as a Research Scientist in 1995. Nick was part of a team dedicated to ensuring that Canadians received the best, most up-to-date information about the food supply. His laboratory played a central role in assessing the vitamin D status of Canadians through its participation in national level surveys. This data is providing much needed information for interpreting the current vitamin D requirements and is being used by the Institute of Medicine in a re-examination of vitamin D recommendations. Dr. Hidiroglou was an accomplished researcher and participated in many collaborative studies within the Nutrition Research Division as well with external partners. As evidence of his successes, he was the author of 60 research papers published in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals and he represented the Department as a speaker at several international scientific meetings. He regularly corresponded with fellow vitamin D experts in Canada and the US. Nick was a selfless individual, committed to his work and its excellence, who never sought the limelight. His untimely and sudden departure from us is a great loss that is keenly felt, not only by his family but also by his colleagues and friends at Health Canada. In June 2010, Dr. William Yan was appointed to the position of Director, Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Food Directorate in Health Canada. Dr. Yan obtained his Ph.D. degree in Medical
