Student involvement is increasing with an expanding student leadership. All of our volunteers have worked hard for CNS this fall, despite their busy schedules. Planning of the May Annual Meeting in Vancouver is in full swing and picking up the flavour of the West Coast! Due to our overwhelming number of submissions for abstracts for the meeting last year we are moving up the date for abstract submission, so do watch for the deadlines. Our enthusiastic membership committee is doing a great job in recruiting members from across the country, our website is active with careers, timely announcements of webinars and is growing as our members send us their interesting information to post. There is a lot to be done, room for volunteers in different areas to grow. All the best, Katherine Gray-Donald President, CNS

Dear Student Members,

diverse fields of nutrition.

My name is Ashley Patterson and I am a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Waterloo. I am also the student representative on the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) Advisory Council and Membership committee.

• Receive preferential conference rates. The Student Symposium

At the 2011 Annual Meeting, a symposium for the professional development of student members was initiated. Dr. Richard Bazinet, Editor of Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, presented a candid and engaging behind-the-scenes view of the peer-review process. The symposium provided students with invaluable advice for successful manuscript publication. Stay tuned for future student events during the CNS 2012 Annual Meeting in Vancouver.

FAST (Food Advancement through Science and Training) Fellowships Starting in 2011, the Food Advancement through Science and Training (FAST) program was opened to undergraduate and graduate students in Human Nutritional Sciences. The FAST program is a multidisciplinary training program aimed at responding to the pressing needs for highly qualified personnel in the Canadian agri-food, natural health products and biopharmaceutical sectors. The health foods and related technologies sector is characterized by a multidisciplinary research and development environment that relies on the food and nutritional sciences, process engineering, and a strong component related to the medical sciences. The new training opportunities generated by FAST will ease the transition of program participants to their future jobs in the health foods and related technologies sector. The FAST program is a joint initiative of the Laval University’s Institute of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods (INAF), the University of Manitoba, the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (RCFFN), and the Canadian Centre for Agri-food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM). Department

Progress continues on the renovations to our main departmental laboratories and offices, with an anticipated occupancy date of June 2012. While recovery efforts from the major fire event of March 2009 have created challenges, a number of serendipitous outcomes have resulted: • Relocation of Human Nutritional Sciences researchers and students to labs at both the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, and the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine has resulted in new collaborations, funding successes and a strong collegial environment. The successful partnership between Human Nutritional Sciences, RCFFN and CCARM, and INAF at the University of Laval on a new NSERC CREATE training program (FAST) is testament to this fact. • Greater interaction between the departments in the Duff Roblin Building, particularly Human Nutritional Sciences and Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, led to the development of a joint proposal for a new Canada Research Chair in Environmental Dynamics and Metabolism. Dr. Jason Treberg, Department of Biological Sciences with a cross-appointment in Human Nutritional Sciences, took up this position in July, 2011, and his expertise in mitochondrial metabolism is already creating opportunities for new research collaborations.
