WELCOME MESSAGE MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleague, Happy birthday Canada! This year all of Canada celebrates the Sesquicentennial. We are going to Ottawa for our Annual Conference and Business Meeting. We will be celebrating all things Canadian in this relatively young country. Our accommodation will be the historic Chateau Laurier, right beside Parliament Hill. This offers us a great opportunity to partake in the 150 year celebrations. The scientific course is organized around risk in our practice. We will discuss some of the concerns that we run into on a regular basis, and also discuss how we can use quality improvement to deal with these issues. Of course we will be dealing with the usual political issues during the OMA Section on Gastroenterology and Ontario Association of Gastroenterology Annual General meetings. Once again we are bringing back the Companion Program. You are free to explore Ottawa on Saturday afternoon, or join us for a tour of the Canadian War Museum. We are planning a spectacular gala at the Château Laurier. I look forward to seeing each of you in October. It should be a weekend full of Moose, Mounties and Maple Leafs. With maybe a Beavertail or two as well. Best wishes, ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY

WELCOME MESSAGE MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR Dear Colleague, On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we look forward to welcoming you to Ottawa and to the OAG’s 21st Annual Conference at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel. We have assembled a thought-provoking scientific program for Saturday and Sunday. The theme of this year’s Conference is “Mitigating Risks in the Gastroenterology Practice.” The Organizing Committee has identified various aspects of clinical practice where we as physicians or our patients potentially face more risk. There are certain medical illnesses where the procedures or treatment options are deemed to have increased risk exposure. We hope to provide our member audience with some tools on how to mitigate these risks. Our goal as Gastroenterologists is to strive to provide the best and safest care for our patients. We have identified some keynote speakers to enlighten us with their knowledge and experience. I hope that you shall find the speakers and topics most informative. We have provided ample time for questions and discussions to engage the member audience. Our Sunday session will lead off with a background and thought provoking talk on the history of medicine in Canada. We will follow this with a speaker from CMPA discussing legal implications in gastroenterology practice. We will then receive an update on the upcoming introduction of ‘FIT’ testing for colon cancer screening in Ontario. This will be followed by the OMA Section on Gastroenterology Annual General Meeting led by our President, Dr. Iain Murray. We will conclude with our Annual General Meeting and look forward to your valuable input to help direct the OAG Board of Directors for the upcoming year. Meeting and interacting with friends and colleagues is an important component of the Conference. We have once again planned a superb meal for the President’s Welcome Dinner. Our Gala on Saturday has a ‘Canadian theme’ in keeping with Canada 150 celebration and it promises to be most enjoyable. We look forward to celebrating Canada 150 in our Nation’s Capital with our members. This year we shall honor Dr. Jocelyn Deneault with the OAG Distinguished Service Award and be entertained by a superb live band and dancing, making the Gala enjoyable for all. Our Association and our Conferences could not exist without the generous and unrestricted support from all our partners and sponsors. We thank them immensely and encourage all to interact with them throughout the Conference. The Organizing Committee looks forward to seeing you around. Best regards, ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY

THE CITY OF OTTAWA WELCOME TO OTTAWA

Ottawa our nation’s capital is a compact, clean, cleverly planned city of culture and politics. It’s also an ideal choice for a weekend getaway. Ottawa is Canada’s capital, a dynamic showcase city of more than one million people. Located in Ontario at the Quebec border, it’s a place where you’ll hear English and French spoken in the streets; where you can discover Canada’s proud heritage at impressive national sites and famous landmarks, including the Rideau Canal. It’s a city rich in politics and steeped in culture, with world-class museums and galleries displaying stunning national collections and special exhibitions from Canada and around the world. Ottawa is a destination alive with celebration, beginning each year with February’s Winterlude, continuing through May’s Canadian Tulip Festival, heating up July 1 with the biggest Canada Day celebration in the country, and going all-out with headliner summer music festivals. This year Canada celebrates its 150th Birthday and Ottawa will be alive and bustling all year round. This city is a uniquely beautiful place: an urban centre on the edge of nature where you can enjoy the great outdoors — just outside your hotel room, and nearby in the surrounding country side. There’s an easy cosmopolitan vibe here, and Ottawa is known for being both welcoming and walkable. Explore the distinctive local neighbourhoods. Start downtown at the architecturally stunning National Gallery of Canada, and don’t miss the Canadian Nature Museum and the National Aviation Museum. Rideau Canal offers boating in the summer and ice-skating in the winter. Gatineau Park attracts cyclists and walkers, while Byward Market blends old and new Ottawa. This is also a city that enjoys the finer things in life, with a culinary community that’s earning wide acclaim, unique boutiques and shopping districts, a lively local music and art scene, and always exciting nightlife. This is Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Come experience it for yourself.
