MESSAGE FROM THE OAG PRESIDENT Dear Colleague, As a long-term Board member and the current President of the Association, it is always satisfying to think back on all we have accomplished, and exciting to anticipate the evolution of our specialty in Canada's largest province. One of the cornerstones of this organization is our Annual Conference and this, our seventeenth is no exception. Over the last two decades our specialty has evolved from one that merely reacted to disease to one that actively seeks to prevent it. The theme of this meeting is Cancer Prevention and Early Treatment. This year alone over 70,000 Ontarians will be diagnosed with cancer, almost 20% of those originating in digestive organs. As technology progresses our ability to prevent and modify the course of cancer in its earliest stages continues to improve. This year's conference will highlight that progress and give us more insight into future directions. We have an outstanding Companion program planned, which will explore a plant-based diet life-style with a prominent Toronto figure on health and nutrition, well-known Culinary Nutritionist and Chef, Marni Wasserman. I would like to thank the OAG administrative staff, our Conference committee, our industry partners and sponsors and you, the membership, for all your work and support. MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR Dear Colleague, The organizers of this year’s Annual OAG Conference would like to offer a warm welcome to all the participants of this year’s meeting. Our conference offers a great opportunity to meet new and old colleagues, to learn new material that will help us in our work and to have an entertaining weekend while doing all this. Much of the clinical work we do as gastroenterologists relates to how we diagnose and manage patients with a variety of GI cancers. Your conference organizers recognize the rapid changes that have happened and are underway in screening and management of this diverse group of conditions and we are all aware of the change that will occur in how we do our work. The focus of this year’s conference is to first provide an update on screening for several key types of GI cancers. Our second session will highlight the current management of CRC, esophageal cancer and HCC. Our first day will conclude with a review and discussion of how CCO will interact with the GI community over the next few years. All of these sessions will provide time for ample discussion – something that is always lively! We have also kept several important sessions that are highly evaluated and a constant from each year’s meeting. On Saturday there will be a Residents’ Round Table discussion moderated by busy practitioners from both private and university settings. In Ontario today, this is one of the best way for trainees to sound out ideas and investigate strategies for work after training is completed. On Sunday we will hear and see highlights from the most recent endoscopy course at St. Michael’s and we will end with the OAG Annual General Meeting. In times such as these, your input at this meeting is crucial for our organization. As always, we will have the opportunity to relax and socialize at our Gala and as at every annual conference we will celebrate the successes of our peers with the OAG awards presentations. Our association and our meetings would not exist without the generous and unrestricted support from all our sponsors. We thank our sponsors once again and encourage all members to interact with them throughout the meeting. We are sure the conference will once again be a great success. Presentation Overview Although we do our best to prevent cancer, early or late diagnosis of any cancer leads to some difficult conversations with our patients. Common gastrointestinal cancers include colon, esophageal, and hepatocellular, and their staging, prognosis, and treatment are always evolving as new technologies and strategies emerge. We will discuss each cancer in turn and focus to optimize our prevention and inform our management decisions to give the best care to our patients.

THE OAG AWARD This award is given in recognition of a fellow gastroenterologist who has made an outstanding contribution in gastroenterology.
Join us as we honour our 2013 award recipient, Dr. Trevor Seaton, at the OAG Gala and Awards Presentation. Treavor Seaton, MB, BS, FRCPC, FACG Dr. Trevor Seaton specializes in gastroenterology. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. After completing a residency in internal medicine and gastroenterology at McMaster University, he joined the Hamilton Civic Hospitals and the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences in 1975. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Seaton has served as Program Director in Medicine and Gastroenterology for the University Residency Program at McMaster, as Chief of Medicine and Chairman of MSAC at Hamilton Civic Hospitals, and in various capacities at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at McMaster and a consulting gastroenterologist at the Hamilton Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Seaton serves as Vice Chairman and Member of Medical Advisory Board of Helix Biopharma Corp and also practices clinical gastroenterology in the Cayman Islands several times per year. Dr. Seaton is the immediate Past President of The Association of West Indian Gastroenterologists (AWIG).

CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOW POLICY
CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOW POLICY Non-Cancellation Will Cost You...
Did you know that as an OAG member, if you register for the OAG Conference, but do not attend, your non-attendance costs the OAG approximately $900 (Hotel accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, nutrition break and administration)? The OAG office is required to give guarantees to the hotel/venue at least four (4) business days prior to the beginning of any conference. Therefore, by giving meal number guarantees you are included in the hotel room count and meal numbers for the entire conference unless you notify our office, within the time specified, that you are cancelling your registration. It is the fiduciary responsibility of the Board of Directors to ensure that the OAG’s monies are spent wisely. The OAG has implemented a policy for members – it is mandatory that you provide a credit card number to register for the conference. Your credit card will not be charged unless you do not attend and neglect to notify the OAG office by the cancellation deadline (as indicated on the registration form.) The amount that will be charged to your credit card is the fee for one night's hotel accommodation and your meals – approximately $900. If you need to cancel your registration, please refer to the Conference registration form and contact the OAG office - you will receive a cancellation number as your validation.
