LSRPCA’S ANNUAL BLUEBONNET
04 [ LONE STAR MAGAZINE : BLUEBONNET TOUR ]
The LSRPCA, or the Lone Star Region Porsche Club of America, had their annual bluebonnet tour on April 1, 2023. The weather was perfect, and the scenery was breathtaking, making for a wonderful day of driving. The group encountered a last-minute change in the route due to potential interference from competing car clubs. LSRPCA President Hector Martinez quickly made strategic adjustments to ensure the tour stayed Porsche-exclusive.
The group gathered at Buc-ee's in Katy for breakfast tacos and jerky before the drive. About 30 Porsches of different models, ages, and colors were on display in the parking lot. Two groups were formed for the drive, each led by a lead car and a sweeper car for organization. They stopped in Alleyton to take photos of Texas Yellowstar wildflowers, and then headed to Columbus to see historical buildings from the 1890s. The Porsches were lined up in the center of town for photos, showcasing a range of models from the past 40 years. The group then drove through a nearby neighborhood to see a century-old home made of petrified wood.

The drive continued to La Grange, where they passed fields of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes. The group stopped for more photos and then regrouped at the Original Kountry Bakery in Schulenburg for authentic Kolaches and Pigs in a Blanket. The group then detoured to see a 1920s Sinclair gas station converted into a vacation rental before having lunch at The Red Vault Bistro in Flatonia. After lunch, the group visited a working dairy to pick up some local dairy products.
Finally, the tour concluded at Majek Winery, where the owners welcomed the group to a tour of their operation and tasting room. The group had a chance to take in the scenery and talk about their passion for Porsches. Overall, it was a successful day of driving, and the members of LSRPCA are looking forward to the next club tour! J

WHAT IS CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
Last month, the Lone Star region had its first Concours d’Elegance hosted on the Kemah Boardwalk. More than 40 cars competed and another 20 were in attendance on a beautiful Saturday morning. But what’s a Concours de Elegance? And how can I get to participate in one? This is what I am going to describe in this article as well as give a few hints and tricks

CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE
(pronounced "kon-koor del-uh-gahns")
L S R PCA 2022
A prestigious event in the automotive world where classic, vintage, and rare cars are displayed and judged based on their historical significance, authenticity, beauty, and overall condition. The event typically takes place on a lawn or golf course and involves a display of meticulously restored or preserved automobiles. Concours d'Elegance events are often held as part of larger car shows or automotive festivals, and they can attract car enthusiasts, collectors, and industry professionals from around the world. The term "concours" comes from the French word for "contest" or "competition," and the event is indeed a competition, with judges awarding prizes in various categories based on the cars' qualities. The 2 most famous events in the US are Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. Overall, Concours d'Elegance events are a celebration of the beauty, craftsmanship, and history of the automobile.
For the Porsche Club of America, the most prestigious Concours is the one that is part of the Porsche Parade, the large enthusiast gathering that happens every year in a different location. It usually has several categories such as:
1. STREET - This category is for Porsche cars that are driven regularly on the street and may show some wear and tear.
2. TOURING - This category is for Porsche cars that are driven regularly on the street, but are in excellent condition and wellmaintained.
3. PRESERVATION - This category is for Porsche cars that are largely original and unrestored, with some wear and tear expected for their age.
4. RESTORED - This category is for Porsche cars that have undergone a full restoration to a high standard, with attention paid to every detail.
5. FULL CONCOURS - This category is for Porsche cars that are restored to the highest possible level, with a focus on absolute perfection in every aspect of the car's appearance and operation.
6. JUDGED FUN - This category is for Porsche cars that may not fit into any other category, but are interesting or unique in some way and are judged for fun.
7. DISPLAY ONLY - This category is for Porsche cars that are displayed but not judged, often because they are not fully restored or do not fit into any other category.
The Lone Star region has a very active Concours calendar with usually three to four events per year. Usually, Kemah is the first one and attracts a good number of cars. As most of the cars are driven regularly, we only have the Street category. The cars are then divided into different divisions, based on the model and year and each division has a winner. Then by the end of the year, the results of the different events are aggregated and there is one winner per division. The 2022 awards ceremony was also presented in the Kemah Boardwalk concours.
H L S R ACP 3202 C O SRUOCNH
As I drive a 992 model, I am part of Division 7, which includes 991 and 992. Usually, this is a very competitive division, and I am very proud to have won the yearly award for 2022.
As it can be a bit intimidating to participate for the first time, I wanted to share some tips and tricks for a first-time participant:
- The main objective is to bring the car as close as possible to how it left the factory. Cleaning and polishing are the initial steps. As I am old school and still a fan of waxes, I usually polish and wax the car the week before the event. If you have your car ceramic coated, you might still want to consider some ceramic enhancers for gloss.
- On the day before the event, I give a good wash and a thorough internal cleaning. Make sure no water spots are left.
- Remove all the non-factory items. Including sunglasses, chargers, door openers, etc…
- On the day of the event, I like to arrive at least 1 hour before the start, to do a final preparation. Cleaning the wheels and windows is key, as we are not towing the car on a trailer.
The judges will give points for 3 different categories: Exterior, Interior, and Storage. Every car starts with a perfect score and loses points as the judges find problems. Then they add the points of the different categories and handover to the organization which will calculate the totals and determines the winner of each division. Two other awards are given in our Lone Star Region version of the concours: Judges Choice – for the car with the highest scores and People’s Choice – where the participants get to vote in 2 cars of their preference.
The Concours calendar is always updated on the club website and the organization always gives judge training sessions, where anyone can get a better understanding of the criteria and get qualified to be a judge.
I hope this article has helped to explain the event and, even more important, has developed your desire to participate in one of the upcoming events. See you there! J

Being a product of the 60s and car-crazy, Porsche ownership one day was certainly a goal. I remember playing for hours with my 917 Gulf-colored matchbox car dreaming like all young boys about racing cars and driving Porsches. I have been fortunate to have had the chance now to do both while living in some beautiful places around the world.
Like many in Houston, I had a career in oil and gas that afforded us an opportunity to see the world and enjoy an expat lifestyle. In the late 80's I was in So Cal, first getting my BS in Petroleum Engineering, then an MBA. My first engineering job was in SoCal, working on installing the last two offshore platforms in California. In the motorsports arena, once there was some sufficient income, I joined SCCA as a flagger and later started racing go-karts. While Porsche ownership would have been great early in life, funds were being diverted to other Motorsport passions. However, exposure to Porsches was high and I attended the 1997 Los Angeles auto show where the new Boxster was displayed...I remember it fondly, silver with a burgundy interior. That car, mid-engine, and a convertible to me was the machine to have. That dream came through, but it took a few years.
Fast forward a decade and now we are preparing for our fourth major career move after assignments in New Orleans, Houston, and Stavanger, Norway. This time it's to the land under...Australia... the bank account has improved and there wasn't even another car to consider...I immediately located a used first gen arena red 986 Boxster and joined Porsche Club Australia, Victoria chapter. Now living in Melbourne, I was finally a proud Porsche owner. Fun fact, from what I was told per capita, there are more Porsches in Australia than even Germany...and like Americans, the car culture in Australia is very strong. With Porsche club, my street Boxster was naturally off to the racetrack for time trails at great tracks like Phillip Island, Winton, and Sandown. Well, what happens in Porsche clubs?...you meet great people and one thing leads to another. First, it was an opportunity to participate in the 2009 edition of Targa Tasmania (an annual tarmac rally around the island
BOTH STREET AND TRACK FROM AROUND THE WORLD
WRITTEN BY: NILS MUSEAUS
of Tasmania). We were in the Tour section, a group of about 25 cars that once the 00 car had cleared the course, we were sent out in groups of 5 to sweep the line for the full-blown rally cars to follow. Again, we were fortunate, first to be chosen to participate but then experiencing the best weather week the event had had in many years. We didn't have a drop of rain for the entire week and the only time the top was not down was during the nights. The Tasmanian event is an annual tradition with specialized event license plates for every car and an opportunity to see the entire island "at speed". Like all rallies, there are transit stages but on the race stages...even for the cars in the tour section, it was 9/10's and as fast as you dare. It was a liberating and bonding experience with my wife who had followed my progression from SCCA worker, to karter, to SCCA road racer...here Mindy was planted in the left seat (the passenger seat...remember we are in Australia so the steering wheel on the right) and we are driving essentially flat out on closed roads, taking the apexes left and right with no chance of oncoming traffic...any drivers dream...that was one of my absolute greatest Porsche experiences to that point...shared by my courageous wife.
Well, one Porsche experience leads to another...influenced by more Aussie Porsche fanatics, I get much deeper into motorsports by buying a full-blown 944 race car to compete in '944 Challenge Australia'. A one-make series founded by Dennis O'keef, owner of one of Australia's major used Porsche part suppliers. We had a blast racing for one and a half seasons at those Victorian tracks mentioned earlier but also Eastern Creek near Sydney (now called Sydney Motorsport Park) and to Malala in South Austria where I had my first pole position of my Porsche racing career.
Another great piece of advice Dennis had around 2012 was "if you want a 993, they will never be cheaper". I took that advice literally ...after trolling the internet, I found a low-mileage Arena red 993 at a dealership in Melbourne...but that dealership was halfway around the world...Melbourne Florida...I bought that car and basically put it in storage for the next many years. It's a prized car that has had a better return than the stock market and is a great ride to boot!
16 [ LONE STAR MAGAZINE : PORSCHES EXPERIENCES ]
All good things come to an end when you are an expat and my next job was in Papua New Guinea where I wasn't even allowed to drive!
Jump forward another few years and we are now headed to UAE (United Arab Emirates). Another place where folks are into cars...lots of exotic machinery and of course another Porsche for me, this time a 987 Cayman S. Many more opportunities to connect with Porsche fanatics in Porsche Club UAE. In UAE we participated in road trips and "drive fast" events at Yas Marine (home to the UAE F1) and Dubai Autodrome, both tracks that are worldclass and built to the highest FIA standards.
At the end of 2017, we finally returned to the US and had an opportunity to go road racing again…finally. I have been actively involved in SCCA first in Spec Miata and then Spec Racer Ford 3 for the last 5 seasons.
In 2018, we attended our first Rennsport at Laguna Seca in our 993 truly seeing the American passion for Porsche and even getting to reconnect with the Gulf Colored 917s of my childhood, the full sized version! There is another Rennsport this year at Laguna and we will attend again in our newest Porsche, a 2023 718 Spyder.
Last year, race Porsches once again entered the picture. In 2018 we prepared a Miata for WRL (World Racing League) endurance racing. Along with some great friends and drivers, we had several wins in the Miata. However, after our last Miata grenaded at COTA in 2021 which resulted in a small fire, we hooked up with Overnight Motorsport out of Louisiana driving nothing less than a 986 Boxster in GP3! After having immediate success with a win at Barber...we have been to Mid-Ohio and put it in the winner's circle for them at the 14 hrs of Daytona... aren't Porsches fantastic! Street or track, you cannot go wrong.
Hope you have enjoyed my Porsche story. J

In early 2022, Porsche Club and Princess Cruise Lines partnered to create new opportunities for Club members. Princess was present at various Club events through the year and showed their specially painted Taycan which was to be given away later in the year.
Princess and PCA organized a new Zone 12 event, called Zonefest at Sea, and kicked it off with an eight day Porsche themed cruise from Ft. Lauderdale on December 10, 2022. The cruise combined the best of the cruise experience with numerous PCA events, including a Concours and racing! (More about these later.) In addition, the cruise was filled with the social
activities that the Club is known for. Participants met old friends and made new ones; once again, showing that it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.
Greatly exceeding expectations, 600 Club members registered for the cruise. The ship, the Regal Princess has a capacity of about 4000 passengers and about 2100 total were on board. Princess extended a high level of hospitality to Club members, starting with special rates and a special line for Club members to board the ship. Of course, Princess provided high quality food and beverage service throughout the voyage. The Captain, and his staff, made numerous visits to Club activities.
21
WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY:DAVID AND DEBBIE BAXTER
The ship, the Regal Princess, is the ship that the recent reincarnation of The Love Boat television show has been filmed on. As we left ports, the ship’s horn would play the “Love Boat” theme rather than a simple toot.
Leaving from Ft. Lauderdale, the ship stopped in St. Maarten, St. Kitts, San Juan, and Grand Turk where Club members enjoyed the various available activities at each port.
Onboard Club activities for PCA Members also included welcome and closing cocktail receptions, PCA giveaways and prizes, PCA seminars, culinary experiences, a PCA Club dinner, Q&A sessions with leading Porsche experts, and special hats for all guests. Princess also graciously donated free cruises as door prizes. On shore activities at the destination ports included a Cars and Coffee on the dock with the Puerto Rico Region and special beach activities for PCA Club Members at Grand Turk.
Princess showed car related movies on the giant screen on the top deck, including Risky Business, Top Gun and Gone in 60 seconds. There was also the Princess Casino and the Lotus Spa for members to enjoy.
At major events, the Club sponsors a Concours and Porschef-
est was no exception. Recognizing the difficulties of bring cars onboard, the Concours involved diecast 1:18 scale models. Expecting only a handful of cars, PCA Club Members brought 118 models onboard and showed them in three categories: Vintage (Pre 996), Racing and Street. Princess actually closed one of their shops and allowed the models to be displayed in the display cases for several days. Judges, including Porsche experts and Club officials, carefully inspected all of the cars and determined the best. As in all Concours, tensions ran high as the winners were announced with Princess providing crystal ship trophies for the winners.
Racing is always a topic at Club events and this cruise was no exception. One evening, Princess provided a grid in the Piazza (the central area of the ship) and six model cars. Teams were chosen. Dice were rolled and cars advanced. The crowd cheered and, eventually, cars made it to the finish line. No tire smoke. No gasoline smell. Just simple fun for participants and spectators. At the end of the voyage, with everyone sadly departing, PCA Club Member were already excitedly looking forward to the next PorscheFest at Sea. J
