Hey Division 8!

As July comes to an end, we must prepare for the start of a new school year! This year we will set goals that have never been set, do what has never been done, and will accomplish all of this with a BANG! We will begin to prepare ourselves for the late nights, staying up to finish our homework and preparing for events. This year will be even better and more enjoyable, because we closely united. We have built such a strong relationship, which allows us to finish the service year strong. Remember, learn from failures and you will succeed. Because one day when you look back, you will realize that the failure was your stepping stone to perfection! Henry Wang Lieutenant Governor New York Key Club Division 8

Division 8 Barbeque Recap The divisional barbeque was hosted by our own lieutenant governor, Henry Wang in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Henry has kicked his term off with a bang- hosting a successful barbeque raising over $200 and planning yet another event- the division 8 beach hang out with the help of the presidents. Food was abundant as many key clubbers sat on picnic blankets under the trees, laughing, eating and having fun. Although the drinks ran out quickly, our ninjas still found a way to have fun as they participated in each president’s fun filled game. From Gina’s (Bayside High school) water balloon toss game to Ashley’s (Francis Lewis) Simon-says based game, ninjas found themselves bonding with each other over these teambuilding activities. Though winners were declared, deep down, we were all winners, especially Gulam, Eric, Gina and our own lieutenant governor, Henry who were all “pied”. Though there was no actual pies, they were auctioned off and sprayed with whipped cream by the winner. Just because it’s called “Division 8 Barbeque” doesn’t mean it’s solely for division 8’s ninjas. Many guest appearances from our Kiwanis, our counselors and division 11’s Pandas were made as we saw people such as Mr. Jacoby (Bayside) and Lillian Xie (I.P. Division 11 L.T.G.). There were visits from our friends in Humans of Key Club (H.O.K.C.) who posted their candid candidates on their Facebook page. For those of you who did not attend, it’s strongly recommended to go to the next one- and if you’re a rising senior- who cares? Graduating from high school doesn’t mean you’re graduating from Key Club. We’ll always welcome you with open arms because caring is our way of life. -Emilly Tan (QHSS)

For the event, Meals on Heels (July 5th 2014), we went to the Carter Burden Center for the aging to get our assignments. We were told to pair up and we received a list of different people to deliver the food to along with some special instructions for some. Since I got paired with Joelle, we opted to get a cart (Joelle doesn't do exercise). We started walking around the neighborhood and entered different apartment buildings to deliver the food. It was amazing since many of the elderly we delivered to took the time to converse with us. Honestly, it was one of my favorite events because unlike the usual things we do, which is more behind the scenes, we saw the people we were actually helping. The fact that we were helping them and putting a smile on their faces made my day. I couldn't stop talking about it, but I was glad everyone else that participated seemed to enjoy it as well. -Samantha Chan, Cardozo High School

On June 28th, it was the Divisional BBQ, which can be described as pleasantly surprising. I didn't really know what to expect, so I set my standards really low in case it was a disappointment. As for the location, it was a pain in the butt to get there. The BBQ was held at this discrete location between the highway and the lake. Emilly Tan and I made the commute together. Despite arriving at the picnic site early, people, such as Kelly Song, Lillian Xie, and Henry Wang, were already there. So we settled ourselves on one of the highly patriotic blankets provided, and proceeded to play cards until more people came. When more people arrived, our quiet card-playing party of two evolved into exuberant cardplaying party of seven. We were all laughing and talking and having a great time. But then, it all changed when the food was cooked. Within a blink of an eye, everyone left our blanket and were rushing for the food. Emilly and I quickly sorted the cards, then got up as well and went towards the much needed sustenance. And the cards were left there, alone. –Fanny Lin QHSS

Autism Walk Brooklyn: July 20, 2014 My experience at the Autism Walk was a very unique experience. When I arrived at the center of Prospect Park, I heard a talented young boy playing the piano and singing many songs. I was impressed by his level of talent for a boy his age. He stole the heart of the crowd by performing the National Anthem. I witnessed many activity/refreshment booths in the park. Many of the booths were organizations that raised awareness of Autism. The activity booths were very creative and unique. Attendees were able to get Autism Tattoos, get their nails done with nail stickers in the design of puzzle pieces, and make Autism necklaces. I decided to take a unique approach on supporting the awareness of Autism. My approach was to get my nails done. The yoga warm ups helped loosened me up and ready to go and participate in the walk. I bonded with my fellow Key Clubbers during the walk. I was able to get the chance to know some of the members and they were able to do so well with me. The walk was a little tiring but Francis Lewis Key Club finished the walk. At the end of the day, I am glad I participated in a walk that raises awareness to people about something very important, especially Autism. -Sunder Bedi Francis Lewis

June Divisional Recap

On June 25th, Division 8 had their monthly divisional meeting led by Lieutenant Governor Henry Wang. As a delicious start to the meeting, Benjamin N. Cardozo’s Key Club provided some deserts, as a job well done for Penny Wars that occurred the meeting prior! They were amazing! During the meeting we learned about future events that we could go to like the Division 8 picnic and the Race to 10K: 4th Annual Division 11 BBQ. We also heard about other Key Clubbers experiences from past events, like that of Kalvin Chi during the Color Run. We also got to see Immediate Past Division 11 Lieutenant Governor Lillian Xie’s video campaign for International Trustee! She put a lot of effort into it, which was why it was such a great video! We learned about a few more other events, and also about Humans Of Key Club, which is a HONY inspired online community for Key Clubbers! It has been a great success so far and I’m sure it will continue to be one! After everything was said and done, another successful meeting was adjourned! -Joelle Chaves Cardozo High School

The 2014 7 International Convention ( ICON ) took place in sunny Anaheim, California! The New York District arrived at the Marriott Hotel on Wednesday evening, where the convention took place. As I took my first step into the hotel, I felt a rush of adrenaline. Being surround by tons of key clubbers from all around, made me feel so foreign. That didn't stop me from making new friends. I quickly rushed up to my room to put down my things, and ran out the door to greet other key clubbers. Before you know it, I was waking up and packing to leave the hotel. Honestly ICON was the best experience ever, in fact it was the highlight of my summer. All though those 3 days flew by really fast, I made many new friends, and memories that would last a lifetime. Throughout the convention I met several inspiring people, who showed me that it's not about being the best division or who can raise the most money, but it was about those you were saving. I knew that no matter what I do in college, whether it's continue onto circle k or not, I will always volunteer. Not being part of the k family doesn't mean you should stop volunteering, but it should motivate you and push you to become a better person. This year for the Eliminate project, we hope to raise the 110 million in order to accomplish my goal. As this is the last year for Eliminate, and my last year in key club, I hope to leave with a goal accomplished. I will work as hard as I can, preparing and creating several fundraisers in order to reach our goal! Remember it only takes $1.80 to save a mother and her child, WE CAN DO THIS! All in all I am so glad I was able to attend the International Convention. - Lieutenant Governor Division 8 Henry Wang

Next Year ICON: June 2015 June 25- June 28 Indianapolis, Indiana - Join ICON with Circle K and Kiwanis for the celebration of the conclusion of the Eliminate Project and 100 year anniversary for Kiwanis.

Humans of Key Club: Humans of Key Club, also known as HOKC, was launched on May 11th, 2014, based off of the very popular photoblog, HONY. We here expand the mission of Brandon Stanton by capturing the stories of the ostensibly mundane and demonstrating the uniqueness that is in every human we speak to, hear of, or even just see once in our life in Key Club.

To kick off their success and represent our organization, Humans of Key Club has developed custom t-shirts. Starting in July, Humans of Key Club members will be able to wear their gear proudly.

This Month’s Featured Key Clubbers (Left to right, top to bottom): Emilly Tan, Donald Franks & Janelle Saucedo, Clifford Young, Jenny Trinh, Lillian Xie, Eric Yurko and Jen K. Nguyen.
