Lieutenant Governor Greeting

Hello Division 8!

It is almost December, which means Christmas is near! I want to start off by saying that every club have been doing a fantastic job, which is because of all of you! I am so proud that despite the horrible weather, you all make the best effort to attend each event. It is also great to see that you are also donating to these local causes! Every single dollar you donate adds up, and it actually sums up to a large amount! Remember that small steps pave the way for success. You all are positively impacting the lives of many. You should all be very proud of the work you are doing. As we approach the end of this service year, Leadership Training Conference (LTC) is right around the corner! I am so excited to say that we are only 4 months away. This means that we must end off this service year with a BANG! We can all do so if we all come out to events, help out, and donate money! For those of you who don’t know what LTC is, it is a conference where you will meet Key Clubs from all around the New York District. This is a great place to meet many people, who are just as passionate or more about helping the community. Many of you who plan on applying for awards, will receive your awards then. We will also be bringing back play fair this year, in addition to that we are also having the Governors ball. I hope you will are all excited about the free-time you have, to bond with other Key Clubbers. This year’s theme is Espionage, so get ready for a SPY-tastic Conference. I can’t wait to see you all there! Keep up the great work!

Kidney Walk

Kidney Walk

The Kidney Walk was held on November 9th. There was a meet up that morning in front of the Flushing library, and the number of people that showed up made it seem as if Black Friday came earlier than usual. After a couple minutes of waiting, an army of Key Clubbers marched and took over the train station. From there, we were magically teleported from platform 9 and 3-quarters to Foley Square (taking the train and doing a fancy transfer is too mainstream). While waiting for the walk to start, we each donated 2 dollars and we were able to relax, eat cotton candy and popcorn, and enjoy being in each other’s presence. Soon after, the walk started, taking place on the Brooklyn Bridge. It was crowded and it seemed like the Cardozo hallways, but I was able to enjoy the scenery for a longer period of time. We were all able to have fun, talking, joking around with each other, and taking pictures to preserve the many fond memories we were going to make during this event. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and back to our original starting point, finishing the Kidney Walk. From there, we were able to grab some snacks and food for our empty stomachs. After relaxing for half an hour, group photos of Cardozo Key Club were taken, ending the event with photos of our derpy faces, which would later be posted on Facebook and make strangers question what we exactly do in Key Club. Looking back, this event was relaxing, helping me relieve myself of stress, and allowing others to bond with each other. I expected this event to be enjoyable and I wasn’t disappointed in the end.

Best Buddies Walk It was definitely fun. Although I came to the event with no friends, I'm glad I was able to make friends at the end of the day. Plus, I got free food and snacks. Emily Xia (Francis Lewis)

Honestly I never had the intention of going to the best buddies’ friendship walk. The weather was freezing cold compared to my warm and comfy bed and I never thought of the idea of leaving my bed. I rolled around my bed several times debating if I were to go or not. Finally I turned over and realized that my friend had messaged me. She told me that she was going and asked me to go, of course I said yes, in order to satisfy her question. Then again a part of me regrets saying that but another part was really glad I said yes. The walk was on November 16th 2014 on an early Sunday. The meet up for it was from 7:00-7:30AM. I thought I was probably going to fall asleep somewhere during the walk since the night before I received 4 hours of sleep. In the end I didn't fall asleep, which was a good thing. Getting back to the topic of the walk, when you entered the entrance of the walk there was a warm welcoming of people guiding you where to go. We were led to a tent where we had to sign in by filling out the paper we were given, and then received our free T-Shirt. Taking a glace of our phones, we realized that we were too early for the walk; therefore we decided to walk around, enjoying ourselves as we waited for the walk to begin. The first place or tent, we went to was the food tent, because we all I know no one can reject free food. Afterwards we waited around until it was actually time for the event to begin. I was really glad I went on the walk. I saw an old friend, although we didn't talk, but I guess it was nice. Something that was worth remembering overall is all the friends that we made through all those Key Club events or meetings. I made a few friends myself during this event. -Eden Wang 4 (Bayside)

St Jude’s Give Thanks The St. Judes Walk was very engaging, fun, and mostly organized. The staff members simply told us what we needed to do in order to contribute. I was asked to hold up a sign with an arrow on it in order to help the walkers know where they needed to go. Many of the walkers were confused but said “thank you” to me when they saw the sign I was holding up. Because of that, I’m glad I got to help out and know my part in the walk was useful. Sara Siyunova (QHSS)

"When I first heard of ""St. Jude"", I thought of churches. I didn't know it was a hospital for catastrophic diseases in children until I volunteered at the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk. Despite the fact that I had to wake up much earlier in the morning, it was a fun and worthwhile experience. The train rides have always been fun to me, because I've always thought that it's cool to board the train together with everyone else and occupy the whole car. At the park, the committee handed out t-shirts and, more importantly, donuts and munchkins. Although I didn't know what to do for a long time, I was eventually paired up with other amazing people such as Ashley, Shelley, and Kelly. It was really fun to chat with them while cheering up the walkers. Some of us sang and some of us cheered. Our president would advertise Key Club whenever she gets a chance. However, good times always pass by fast. In a blink of an eye, the event ended. I wished for the time to pause when I heard ""This is the last stop of the 7 train."" I would never regret this experience, because I met wonderful people and made new friends. " Brian Liu (Francis Lewis)

October DIVISIONAL RECAP

October Divisional Recap Divisional meeting of November, held on 17th of November 2014 at Forest Hills Library was extremely entertaining and important. Townsend Harris Key Club attended their first division 8 meeting. To go along with this, our LTG Henry Wang had planned a very engaging icebreaker where clubs were mixed up and worked together to win the prize: candies! Then we went through the many upcoming events, including a detailed explanation of LTC to all the members present. Ayusha Amitabh (QHSS)

YOUTH OPPERTUNITIES FUND & MAJOR EMPHASIS PROJECTS

Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) Major Emphasis Projects The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships. YOF grants can help you take action. DISTRICT PROJECTS

District Projects The Make a Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children diagnosed with terminal diseases or with life-threatening medical conditions in the United States every 38 minutes. “A wish can be a game changer.” Whether it is granting them a chance to meet their favorite celebrity or giving them a toy, the volunteers in this foundation can fill a child’s life with happiness. The Facts: 1) The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 38 minutes. 2) The Make-A-Wish Foundation relies on the grassroots support of nearly 25,000 volunteers to deliver the organization’s mission. 3) The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted the wishes of 13,007 children in 2007, the most ever in the organization’s history. Since inception, the Foundation has granted more than 164,000 wishes.

There’s no place like St Jude. St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. Its mission is to advance cures through research and treatment. The Facts: 1) Families never receive a bill from St. Jude 2) St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. 3) On average, St. Jude has more than 67,000 patient visits each year. 4) St. Jude has helped increase the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from 4% before opening in 1962 to 94% today. 5) Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened in 1962. 6) Because the majority of St. Jude funding comes from individual contributors, St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most – saving kids regardless of their financial situation. Goals: Service Hour Goal: 65,000 service hours Fundraising Goal: $75,000
