KEY CLUB Lieutenant Governor Greeting Hey Division 8! As we know, it is already June and the school year is almost over. From all the late nights doing homework, while planning events, or even preparing for an event, I can say we finally made it! Through the hard times, comes great joy! Our hard work and determination to give back to our community, helps unite us, and creates a second home to many. Although we started out as strangers who wanted to volunteer, as we attended each event, we bonded and got closer and closer. This came to the point of where we became a family, and the fact that we could call each other any day and time to ask for help. The support in key club never fails to amaze me. For all to immediate pass officers, thank you again for all your hard work. You have done an amazing job, and I wish the best for you guys in college! If you guys get a chance feel free to come back to visit! You guys will always be part of Division 8 no matter where you are !
Yours in Service, Henry Wang Lieutenant Governor New York Key Club Division 8 Cell: (347) 881-8068 Email: Henrywang.ltg@nydkc.org

KEY CLUB Farewell From Seniors Hello fellow Key Clubbers! It has been such an amazing year. We have made some tremendous changes with every little thing that we have done. To end this year, I would just like to say how proud I am to call myself the distinguished Immediate Past Key Club President of the New York District and the very proud President of Bayside High school Key Club! I would like to congratulate Division 8 on all the accomplishments we’ve made. I would like to congratulate the old board for an amazing year, and I wish the new board the very best. I have no doubt that the 2014-2015 service year will be nothing less than another exceptional year. Like I always say, "we make a difference every day. With every step, we color the world." I have had the most wonderful experience for the past four years and it saddens me to say farewell but I know that the legacy will continue on. Good luck to the 2014-2015 board! Andrea Lin - Bayside
Hey, Division 8 Ninjas! As I leave Key Club, I have a few words to say to you all. These last three years in this amazing family has really changed me as a person. I am so blessed to have been able to lead my members and become both the secretary and president of Queens High School for the Sciences Key Club. I’m glad to have been able to meet so many dedicated members and see everyone grow. I also want to congratulate the old board for a successful year because of the tremendous amount of work and effort that they put in. Although it pains me to say this, my time in Key Club is about to run out. I’ve shed my share of tears at LTC, but I’m happy that even though the seniors are graduating, there are still so many dedicated Key Clubbers that will step up to the plate and take over. I’m proud to look back and see how Division 8 Key Club has developed into the fine division it is today and I’m sure that with the new board leading, it will become even greater. I wish the best of luck to Division 8 as I bid all of you farewell! Ryan Lee - QHSS

KEY CLUB Divisional Recap
I remember the first time I came to a divisional, no one knew me. I was a freshman and the junior officers were waving hello to everyone as they walked down the stairs to the basement. I remember watching everyone push the chairs together as Grace took the stand. That was over a year ago, and now I’ve changed from a member to an officer and later a board member. I would’ve never discovered how divisionals promoted interclub relationships until I met the people in Bayside, Cardozo and Francis Lewis. The last divisional, everyone was excited because the T-shirts had come in! The shirts that would represent Division 8 and unify us as a crowd. As eager hands grabbed their respective shirts, I couldn’t help but smile with satisfaction. I’m so glad that I came to divisionals, because unlike my other friends who never showed up, I’ve been able to be a bigger part of Key Club than when I first started. Members shouldn’t be intimidated by the size of our family, they should Page 5 be excited to join it. Emilly Tan - QHSS

KEY CLUB Service Spotlights Relay for Life – Sandra Wong - Bayside No, Relay for Life is not a race to stay alive like the Hunger Games, Relay for Life is an overnight event that gives people the chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember lost ones, and lastly, fight against cancer. The Relay for Life event at Fort Totten was held from 4:00 PM on May 31 to 6:30 AM on June 1. It was 10:40 on Saturday morning when I arrived at the Fort Totten soccer fields to volunteer. At first, there was not much to do because of the ongoing soccer games. Tents were being set-up and so I, along with other Relay for Life people, started putting together the luminarias for the Luminaria Ceremony at night. We created an assembly line where one person would open the bag, another would put the sand in, another would put the candle in, and lastly, another would put the completed bag on a different table. When more Bayside Key Club volunteers started showing up and the soccer games were ending, we started to arrange the tables under the tents and put the luminarias on the grass in a circle. Activities had started and people started to walk around the field to honor people with cancer or people who lost their lives to cancer. Later in the day, people started playing sports, getting Hennas, and other various activities. At around 10:00 PM, the Luminaria Ceremony began. Names were read and people were honored.

Relay for Life continued – Sandra Wong - Bayside Kmely Wang and I had decided the previous day to stay overnight for the first time. We were the only Bayside Key Clubbers to stay over. Throughout the night, there were various foods: ice cream, and coffee. Loud music was playing to ensure that Relayers would stay awake all night. Staying up all night was one of the points of Relay for Life. The lack of sleep and tiredness is how a cancer patient feels. Around 12 Midnight, there were games for teens and kids, such as Musical chairs. Around 1:30 AM, the activities all ended, but the loud music was still playing. Throughout the night, I managed to get two hours of sleep in total. When I woke up from my nap, it was 4:40. The sun had not fully risen yet, but it was still beautiful along the water. At 5:10, there was an announcement. “GOOOOOOODDDD MORNING RELAYERS! Everyone get out of your tents so we can all do the last walk around the field.” Staying overnight at this Relay for Life event was an incredible experience. I met so many adults that are involved with this organization and I learned so much. Staying overnight is so different that just staying on the first day and leaving at night, which was what I did in previous years. I’m so glad Kmely persuaded me to sleepover. Because of this event, I have gained new college friends and so much knowledge. I will definitely be sleeping over again next year. Everyone should try sleeping over at a Relay for Life event!

Color Run – Jane Park – Benjamin N. Cardozo On May 31st, 2014, the last day of May, I attended to another delightful event, Color Run 2014: The Happiest 5k on the planet with Key Club! This event seemed very fun and exciting so I was all hyped and thought this would be one of the best key club events I attended to. And, it turned out to be true!! Way before the event even started, everyone including myself of course was already hyped up getting our different colored shirts (Green, pink, blue, purple, orange, etc.), helping setting up, and practicing throwing paints at each other. Eventually, this amazing event started with a woman running towards the pink station, which was the start of the race, and was also the place I volunteered at! Honestly, it was sort of boring at first because there were only a few people running and none of them looked like they were fully enjoying the race. However, after a bunch of these "unhappy" people passed by, I saw this huge group of people walking towards our station! This suddenly got me really excited and made me scream "Come on, people! Run!!" quite a few times. Then, everyone somehow started screaming along with me which finally got this huge group of people to run. As soon as they stepped into our station, I started literally pouring my paint at them! Ha-ha and not to mention, I started dancing, too! As time passed by, this race got better and better and extra better that it got to the point where even the cleaning up after the race was fun! After the event, there was apparently a festival which I happened to go at the very end because I was too busy roaming around the stations helping the staffs cleaning up the visible aftermath of the race. However, judging by the pictures that were posted later, it was fabulous!! Amazing!! And breathtaking!! I am not over exaggerating this, at all. As much as I want to write everything all out, I'll have to shorten it and sort of end it here so let me quickly summarize this event. It was a pleasure for me to attend and enjoy The Color Run 2014: the happiest 5k on the planet and with no sort of exaggeration, I can proudly say that this was one of the best events I've ever attended. Thank you so much key club for all these great opportunities for me to experience new and incredible moments! Color run was honestly wonderful and I am definitely going again next year!

Since inception, the Foundation has granted more 5) than 164,000 wishes. Goals: Service Hour Goal: 65,000 service hours Fundraising Goal: $75,000 There’s no place like St Jude. St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It’s mission is to advance cures through research and treatment. The Facts: 1) Families never receive a bill from St. Jude 2) St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. 3) On average, St. Jude has more than 67,000 patient visits each year. 4) St. Jude has helped increase the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from 4% before opening in 1962 to 94% today. 5) Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened in 1962. 6) Because the majority of St. Jude funding comes from individual contributors, St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most – saving kids regardless of their financial situation.
