MOMCOLOGY

When your child is diagnosed with cancer, your life changes in an instant. Life is no longer what you thought it would be, you have a new life focused on saving your child’s life. Momcology was created with the vision to connect, support, encourage and empower parents who would gladly and thankfully embrace changing places with their child if only they could. This is what Mindy Dykes, participant of Momcology, had to say about the retreat: “It allowed me to heal through the hurt, bring purpose to this pain and validate that I wasn’t crazy. Having a support system that truly understands what you are going through as a parent is key to staying strong." By reaching our pre-event fund-a-need goal of $8,000, 12 strong moms are able to experience a Momcology retreat. Thank you for helping all these supermoms regain their individuality and strength to take care of their family.

BEADS OF COURAGE Everyone can Carry a Bead! It's as easy as 1-2-3:

CARRY:

Wear your beads to honor the courage of children coping with cancer.

CONNECT:

Return one bead along with your story card to be given to a child on a tough treatment day or to celebrate a treatment milestone.

PLAY:

Keep one bead to symbolize your shared strength. The more beads you carry, the longer your own strand of support becomes AND more entries to play Heads or Tails. (limit 3)

PLAY "HEADS OR TAILS" During the evening program all Heads or Tails participants will be asked to stand up. Then participants select either “heads” or “tails” by putting their hands on their heads—or their tails. A coin will be flipped, and heads or tails will be announced based on which side is up. Those participants whose choice matches the coin flip get to stay standing—everyone else sits down. The flipping of the coin will continue until there is only a handful of players left.

WIN:

Finalists will be asked to come to the stage for the last few coin tosses, until only one player is left standing. Their prize will be 4 Fleetwood Mac Concert Tickets for October 22, 2018 at Xcel Center in St. Paul, MN! 3

FUND-A-NEED BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH

Mindy & Connor Dykes

We are thankful to have Mindy Dykes and her son Connor join us this evening to talk about their continued journey with childhood cancer. This year’s fund-a-need focus is around brain tumor research which is something that is very personal and real with the Dykes family. ‘Midline malignant glioma’ is a mouthful – and it’s also one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer. A four-year old child diagnosed with this kind of brain tumor has less than a five percent chance of making it to his or her sixth birthday. Traditional chemotherapy has not been effective against this type of cancer, and scientists

haven’t found a better way to treat it since the 1960s. This is what Dr. Lulla and his colleagues at Lurie Children’s Hospital are working to change. Dr. Lulla’s research aims to use promising data from a study of adults with the same cancer to design a clinical trial for children. This trial will use a bromodomain inhibitor, which acts like an on/off switch to regulate genes that cause the tumor to grow. Dr. Lulla’s Phase I trial will test whether these bromodomain inhibitors are safe in children with recurrent central nervous system tumors and, later on, malignant glioma. The goal is to increase the understanding of the biology of childhood brain tumors so that researchers can create personalized treatments. Children’s Cancer Research Fund is helping fund this clinical trial, thanks to a gift from Love Your Melon. With less than five percent of total government funding for cancer going to pediatric cancer research, researchers like Dr. Lulla and his team need our support to continue their valuable work. “Support from donors is extremely important in the research field – now more than ever before,” Dr. Lula said. “We depend on the generosity of individuals and organizations like Children’s Cancer Research Fund to see the value of this work on outcomes for kids and their quality of life.” If you are not able to join us for tonight’s evening program, you can still make an impact today by going to the mobile app and making a donation there.

Fun Fact – Vance is a Pre-Ignitor, and along with a group of others, came up with the vision of this golf tournament to benefit CCRF. Berlin Packaging has been a part of the 140 Invitational every year since inception. Berlin Packaging integrates philanthropy into their key priorities, standing out as a strong member of their community on a local and national level. Some of the organizations they support are the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Lurie Children’ Hospital, Institute for National Security and Counter Terrorism (INCSCT), and of course Children’s Cancer Research Fund. What an honor it is to celebrate 15 years of research, solutions and getting one step closer to finding a cure to pediatric cancer with our friends at Berlin Packaging. Thank you for making tomorrow a little bit better than today, together!

Coming to the event every year is very important to me for a number of reasons. Knowing by supporting the CCRF you are part of the team to fight childhood cancer is very rewarding. Seeing the support of others at this event and hearing about the progress that has been made to fight this illness gives me a feeling of pride to be one the founders of this great event. Every year is special and especially when you see this event has been a success for 15 consecutive years. -Vance Ellis 16
