H
ow can a laboratory help you make more money? Lube-Tech released its first house brand machining fluid way back in the 1970s. Just like then, Lube-Tech knows the proper fluid can make all the difference between a precision product and scrap. You can guess what fluid will work or you can do it scientifically. That’s why we built our own chemical lab, to eliminate guesswork, increase response time and get our customers the right fluid faster. The mission of Lube-Tech’s chemical laboratory is: • Diagnose and solve fluid-related problems • Enhance proven fluids by custom-tailoring them to your application • Save you money Formula For Success Lube-Tech’s lab streamlines the fluid formulation process via: • Formulation • Testing • Quality Control • Used Oil Analysis • Fuel Testing
Lube-Tech Certified Lubrication Specialists Work For You The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers has a certification system for people working in the petroleum industry – Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS). With an exam boasting a passing rate lower than the bar exam for law students, earning the CLS title is no easy task, but it assures clients their fluid rep is an expert in the industry. “I deal with engineers and they know what being a CLS means,” said Lube-Tech’s Rich Limpert, who himself holds a CLS certification. “For most of Lube-Tech’s clients it gives them confidence that we will get the right fluid or figure out the right solution for their needs that much faster.”

HOW AN AUDIT CAN SAVE YOU MONEY ANALYZING A PLANT’S LUBRICANT NEEDS
W
hen Lube-Tech’s Tom Bjellos, a Certified Lubrication Specialist, walks into a manufacturing plant his thoughts and observations are all about making things more efficient. That means not only suggesting the proper lubricants, but consolidating the products used to keep the plant’s machinery running at optimum efficiency.
“Why use six or eight different lubricants when you can use two?” “Consolidation is good for everyone, especially the machinery operators and plant managers,” said Bjellos. “Why use six or eight different lubricants when you can use two?” That’s exactly what Bjellos and the Lube-Tech team have done at multiple manufacturing plants. Reducing the number of lubricants not only improves business efficiency, choosing the proper lubricants improves machine efficiency and optimizes production. Getting there starts with a Lube-Tech Solutions Specialist visiting the plant for an audit. “Audits make people nervous, but when we come in we’re not looking for what a plant is doing wrong, we’re looking for ways to make their machinery work better and be more efficient,” said Bjellos. “In the long run this equals more profit for the plant.”
Common Audit Terms • Audit – A plant audit will determine where lubrication inefficiencies lie, including redundancies and where improvements can be made • Insuring Specifications – The last thing anyone wants is a recall. Making sure all lubricants meet required specifications is key to compliance • Expert Analysis – Fluid analysis can solve problems before they become an issue • Customized Machinery Tags – Marking all machinery for its specified fluids simplifies the maintenance process eliminating lubrication mistakes • Training Employees – Teaching workers how to use fluids properly and what to look for if something is going wrong is the first line of defense
WASTE DISPOSAL COMPREHENSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES • Government-compliant petroleum waste stream management • Recycling of volume in drums, totes, or bulk, in solid & liquid states • Waste profiling & annual activity reports document your compliance, simplifying government reporting
FULL COMPLEMENT OF RECYCLING SERVICES • Used antifreeze recycling • Used oil filter recycling • Absorbent recycling (floor dry & pads) • Oily-water (industrial) disposal • Universal wastes recycling (electronics) • Waste gas disposal • VAC truck service • Parts washer equipment maintenance • Supplies (absorbents, pads, drums, labels) • Compliance support (activity reports)

OILY WAT ER RECYCLING Unlike crankcase applications, industrial oils are typically emulsions. In order to be recycled, the emulsion must be broken and the water removed. Lube-Tech has developed a proprietary process to remove metals from oily water, making the water safe to discharge into the sewer. As the first and only licensed oily water treatment facility in the state of Minnesota, Lube-Tech can help you minimize the risk associated with disposing of regulated waste streams.
MANAGING YOUR WASTE FLUIDS THE CHAIN OF LIABILITY
M
anufacturers can run into trouble when it comes to disposing of regulated waste. Regulated waste carries “cradle to grave” liability and shops should verify all parties that touch any waste after it leaves their site. Unfortunately, this verification can be difficult when working through brokers and out of state disposal companies. As a solutions-driven company, Lube-Tech partners with its clients to supply fluids, analyze fluids and dispose of them properly when they reach the end of their service life, taking liability worries away from the client. Why Recycle? In 1992 the EPA classified used oil as a regulated waste and issued rules regarding its proper handling. The EPA requires used oil to be “recycled” and specifically prohibits any other type of disposal. Today, a billion gallons of waste oil is collected every year and 4-Million of that is collected by Lube-Tech. • Never mix fluids unless you have been explicitly told you can • Place materials into dedicated containers and label using standard names • Keep drain pans separate • Always be conscious of what fluids are in close proximity to each other
Uses for Recycled Oil After oil is collected, one of two recycling processes begins: First is a “light process” where the oil is filtered of nonsoluble contaminants and de-watered in preparation for use as burner fuel. Burner fuel is rated at 135,000 BTU per gallon, about the same as diesel fuel. It is sold in bulk and is typically used to heat aggregate to produce asphalt. Second is re-refining, which prepares used oil for use in an engine or other machine, the same as originally intended. This process includes vacuum distillation to remove volatile contaminants (fuel) and hydrotreatment to remove impurities. Re-refined oil can be as good as the original oil and can be rated as high as API Group II.
