IS YOUR OIL A PI C ER T IFIED? API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification ensures users the oil they are putting in their car meets all the demands set by top car manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and those represented by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The testing and performance standards are set by industry associations such as American Society for Testing and Materials, Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Chemistry Council. Together, these organizations run physical, chemical and performance tests on engine oils before they can be certified. “Without an API certification, you don’t know what kind of oil you’re getting,” said Loren Feldkamp, Strategic Automotive Account Specialist at Lube-Tech. “It may be a good oil, it may not. With the API donut certification you know for sure.”
UNDERSTANDING GF-6 OIL SPECS IMPROVED EFFICIENCY, IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
W
ith a fuel efficiency standard of 54.5mpg set for 2025, passenger cars and light truck manufacturers are working to gain every advantage possible in pursuit of fuel efficiency while maintaining engine protection and performance. One way the auto industry is doing this is with ever-thinner engine oils, namely the ILSAC (International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee)-spec GF-6. First license for this engine oil is currently September 1, 2018. Here are some things auto service shop owners need to know about GF-6: • GF-6 engine oils will offer better protection for new technologies such as GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and TGDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection). It is estimated that by 2020 39-percent of vehicles sold will be powered by GDI/TGDI engines • GF-6 will be split into two categories: -GF-6A – will address traditional viscosities and will be backwards compatible -GF-6B – will represent viscosity grades 0W-16 and lower, known as Ultra-Low Viscosity (ULV) lubricants, and will not be backwards compatible • GF-6 engine oils will address the need for increased engine protection for more severe engine designs • ILSAC developed six new engine tests to verify GF-6 engine oils for use in fuel economy and new technologies
• A reduction in GF-6 HTHS (High-Temperature, HighShear) viscosity limits will help fuel economy but this will mean oil manufacturers will have to address engine protection with technologically-advanced additives Implemented in 2012, the 2025 fuel standards mean a 5-percent increase in fuel economy every year. This is a huge hurdle for manufacturers, one that engine oil, particularly GF-6, will play a big role in making happen. Important Points Regarding GF-6 Engine Oils Avoid Using Ultra-Low Viscosity Engine Oils In Older Vehicles • GF-6 engine oils will be split into two specifications: GF-6A and GF-6B • GF-6A will be approved to replace more traditional viscosity grades and is backwards compatible • GF-6B will fall into ULV category reserved for engine oils lower than 0W-20 Both of these lubricants will have to pass the same durability tests, but GF-6B will result in higher fuel economy numbers. However, the lower viscosity will require unique formulation in order to provide proper engine wear protection.

GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER
With automakers trying to meet an EPA-mandated 54.5 fuel mileage target by 2025, service shops will soon be seeing GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and TGDI (Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection) vehicles on a regular basis. Keeping these precision systems clean will be paramount in maintaining this new wave of fuel-efficient vehicles. Companies such as Penray are already selling fuel system cleaners tailored to keeping GDI and TGDI fuel systems clean. Penray’s one-tank treatment uses PEA and PIB additives to dissolve and clean carbon throughout the fuel system.
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE WITH FLUSH SYSTEMS AND CLEANERS
A
complete fluid exchange in a vehicle is likely one of the single best preventative maintenance practices an owner can purchase at a shop. Fluids have lifespans, and leaving them in too long can result in poor performance or, in extreme cases, vehicle failure. Extensive use of aluminum and other alloys in engines, combined with transmissions evolving with ever-increasing complexities of design, mean proper maintenance is key in keeping modern vehicles operating optimally. With fluids serving as the lifeblood of these components, changing them, and changing them thoroughly, is key. “Lube-Tech offers marketing and training materials to support the preventive maintenance segment of our business,” said Loren Feldkamp, Strategic Automotive Account Specialist at Lube-Tech. “Lube-Tech and LubeTech ESI also offer the complete line of Flo-Dynamics equipment as an aid to customers in performing flush services.” Fluid exchange options include transmission, brake, axle, cooling system, air conditioning system and power steering. Shops can also upsell customers on a cleaning option for select systems that will help remove rust, scale, sludge and other contaminants a simple flush likely won’t take care of.
Available Flush Chemicals Include: • 2-Step Fuel Injection & Induction Cleaning Kit (#2102) – Provides total fuel system cleanup, including fuel injectors and intake combustion chambers • 3-Step Fuel Injection and Air Intake Cleaning Kit (#8101) – All the benefits of 2102, plus cleans air intake • 2-Step Engine Recharge Kit (#7502) – Cleans the entire oil system and extends engine component life • 2-Step Power Steering Fluid Tune-Up Kit (#3902) – Cleans and replenishes power steering systems using conventional fluid • Power Steering Fluid System Flush (#3210) – Cleans hydraulic systems and conditions power steering fluid • 2-Step Transmission Tune-Up Kit (#6537) – Safely removes dirt and varnish build-up to restore performance • 2-Step Cooling System Re-Charge Kit (#1102) – Safely cleans the entire cooling system for all coolants, including long life • Direct Injection Fuel System Cleaner (#2113) – One tank cleanup for all gas and diesel engines

clean shop is paramount when it comes to customer service. And clean parts and workspace are important when doing repairs right. Cyclone Red is Lube-Tech’s goto cleaning solution for just about any job in a service shop. And, when it comes to Cyclone Red, the dirtier the job the better.
“Cyclone Red will cut any shops rack of cleaners down to one go-to cleaner that works.” Here’s how it works – Cyclone Red uses a 3-percent potassium hydroxide formula which is perfect for lifting oil, dirt and nearly anything else off of most surfaces including painted parts, frames and concrete floors. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles because this stuff is mildly caustic. Dilution rates range from 2-ounces per gallon up to 8 or even 9-ounces per gallon of water for tough jobs. Cyclone Red will cut any shops rack of cleaners down to one go-to cleaner that works. “Cyclone Red will literally clean everything in a shop,” said Lube-Tech Chemical Solutions Specialist Paul Stiegel. “Combined with one of our sprayers it can be used on anything from floors to engines to the walls of your shop.”

BULLETPROOF YOUR LIFTS KEEP YOUR SHOP SAFE AND RUNNING

NSI standards mandate lifts need to be inspected annually. But standards are only one reason to get lifts inspected – avoiding down time and ensuring a safe working environment are two big reasons to keep list inspections at the top of any shop equipment maintenance list. Lift inspections should be performed by qualified inspectors who are certified by the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI). ALI-certified inspectors will be familiar with the electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems of any given lift. Lube-Tech Equipment Service Installation (ESI) technicians not only inspect lifts, they install them and maintain them. Lube-Tech’s ESI technicians have start-to-finish knowledge of lifts and can perform in-depth inspections at any time. However, daily inspections are a must to spot problems early. Technicians using lifts in your shop should check the items on this list daily.
Daily Lift Inspection Checklist • Ensure lift controls are working properly • Ensure all safety lockouts and restraints are working correctly • Check for deformation or excessive wear of any lift components • Check for damage or excessive wear on any of the lift contact points • Ensure there are no hydraulic leaks • Check for cracks or loose concrete around floor anchors

OIL FILT ER CRUSHERS Used oil filters can take up unnecessary room in 55 gallon drums, along with holding on to excess freeflowing oil. Oil filter crushers reduce filters by 75% of their original size and remove 95% of the free-flowing oil so it can be recycled. This allows for more filters per drum, resulting in less filter drum pick-ups and more savings for your shop.
MANAGING YOUR WASTE FLUIDS THE CHAIN OF LIABILITY
F
luids are the lifeblood of an automotive service shop. But those same fluids that keep your business and your customers’ vehicles alive can get you in big trouble if not managed correctly when they reach the end of their lifecycle. While these fluids are not hazardous waste, mixing them can create hazardous waste. For example, used oil, when mixed with any volume of another waste fluid (for example, brake cleaner or antifreeze), can make what would appear to be a drum of waste oil a drum of hazardous waste. These “mystery drums” can require expensive testing and often are categorized as a hazardous waste by default, because of the complexity and expense associated with determining their contents. Proper waste fluid management can save a shop thousands of dollars and perhaps its reputation. Some best practices are: • Never mix fluids unless you have been explicitly told you can • Place materials into dedicated containers and label using standard names • Keep drain pans separate • Always be conscious of what fluids are in close proximity to each other
Uses for Recycled Oil After oil is collected, one of two recycling processes begins: First is a “light process” where the oil is filtered of nonsoluble contaminants and de-watered in preparation for use as burner fuel. Burner fuel is rated at 135,000 BTU per gallon, about the same as diesel fuel. It is sold in bulk and is typically used to heat aggregate to produce asphalt. Second is re-refining, which prepares used oil for use in an engine or other machine, the same as originally intended. This process includes vacuum distillation to remove volatile contaminants (fuel) and hydrotreatment to remove impurities. Re-refined oil can be as good as the original oil and can be rated as high as API Group II.
