Benghazi port, Benghazi, Libya. Transportaion. Space frames. 4th year (7th semester). Salwa Yousef, Hanan Farkash.

7

Project brief

8

The main aim of the project was to revatilze the port of Benghazi and activate it for passengers use, which required the design of a maritime terminal while taking into consideration the proper structure to be used, as well as designing an aesthitically pleasing mass to rep-

resent the port entrance to the city of Benghazi. The plans demanded including assigned areas for both international and local passengers, while taking into account the spaces and activities they might require and connecting them

without compromising the security of the terminal. This project also included fully designing the site to accomidate public transportation (buses and taxis), private cars, emergency routes and service trucks.

A great deal of attention was paid to the structure of the building, ventilation , lighting and sanitary services. The sections above demonstare the structural details studied and implemented in the building. The sections also illustrated the skylight imbedded in the mass that plays a big

role in lighting this huge space naturally. The ship penetration of waves and its rigid and edgy shape were a great inspiration to the elevations and mass design as it clearly shows on the left.

Project brief

16

The project was set in a site with an abandoned and contaminated lake with the objective of trying to rehabilitate the site into a technology exhibition and connecting the lake with the building and outdoor activities. Thus, turning it into a positive element in the site

17

The plans consisted of a combination of open exhibition spaces - both permenant and temporaryand more private areas for adminstration and other private facilities. While taking into consideration connecting the building with some exterior exhibitions and taking full advantage of the lake and its view, This exploitation of the lake was targeted to chnage the negative memory the users have of the lake and substitute it with a more positive impact.

Designing the elevations was highly infl uenced by the advancement in technology and its trends that recently consist of edgy shapes and extensive use of RGB lights, yet implementing them in a more subtle way as this facility is intended to be family friendly and suitable for all ages and genders.

The following project was highly focused on sustainability, it was allocated in a brown fi eld, previously known as Al Rwesat shopping center, which suffered great damage due to a fire accident and all that remained of it were its cores, In accordance, the target was to rehabili-

tate the site into a facility of benef t, while using the existing cores and other sustainable techniques to generate a facility functional both socially and environmentally.

The sustainable techniques used were not only environmental, but they also focused on the social rehabilitation part, which explains the available graf itti wall

in the main elevation, that was attempted to decrease vandalism by providing a place for people to express themselves and their community in a legal way.

Urban planning of a neighborhood Project location: Type: Structure: Project year: Name of instructor:

Al Thama, Benghazi, Libya. Urban planning. 4th year (7th semester) Dr. Faraj Al Agoury, Dr. Abd Elsallam.

39

This urban project included thorough planning of Al Thama neighborhood and introducing a more walk friendly neighborhood with less vehicle penetration. The main challenge of the project was the lake that was penetrating the site splitting it into two halves, it was a priority to bridge this challenge and create a coherent and accessible site and turning this lake into an advantage more than a disadvantage. The design also demanded the selection of proper residential choices and connecting them with other day to day facilities in the site both fuctionally and visually.
