Set in the western hill looking upon the Manzanares river we can find the ruins of the origins of the city of Madrid: the Arab Wall of Mayrit. The Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace stand close by, imposing a monumental scale. How can we respond to this scale?
Morevoer, the ruins of the Wall have been ignored through centuries, leaving an urban void full of chaos and disorder. How can we weave all these elements?
The answer is the 'Monumental Order', a structural net which materialises in the form of a roof. This roof unifies the public plaza and responds to the urban scale of its setting. The programme is found underneath the plaza. Its access through a giant gap becomes the core of the project, a spectacular atrium where exterior and interior merge.
