Housing for university teachers Ciudad Universitaria, Madrid

During our first project´s semester we were asked to design a single house for a teacher, which was based in the works of a well-known architect. My excercise is based on Zaha Hadid’s works, specially inspired by the Vitra Fire Station and its expression of speed through light and shape. 7 precast concrete pieces are assembled in order to create an intriguing interior, which projects itself to the exterior. This single unit is then repeated up to ten times as recquired by the programme in order to create a community in the Ciudad Universtaria in Madrid.

Villaverde Viejo

Housing complex and offices in Villaverde Bajo, Madrid We were asked to design a new housing complex in a socially and economically deprived district, Villaverde Bajo. The perimeter of the site was confined by the presence of railways and a highway, which was above ground level. Inspired by the village’s own atmosphere, that of a traditional small town and the site itself, the aim was to recreate the same lifestyle by mixing different programmes. Referencing to medieval urban planning, where there is no place for orthogonality, social gatherings are encouraged in pedestrian streets,and a central plaza where activity concentrates. By stacking the same unit, each of which contains two houses, the noise from the railways is avoided and the highway ignored. Furthermore, we were asked to develop an office design, for which the tower was proposed as the milestone of Villaverde Viejo.

Studio house for the artist José Manuel Ballester Madrid

We were asked to design a studio house for an artist, whose big format works need enough room for its storage and to be shown, as well as his own work space and house. The solution responds to the strict needs of the programme, with each of their spatial qualities, which reflect on its façade and its roof. The building is divided into four different units, which form a unity adapted to the site and the topography. The house, with a strict 150m2 is resolved in two heights and is connected to the exhibition hall, a vaulted corridor consecutive to his studio. The studio and storage space references its context, with a clear industrial aesthetic which also responds to its own function and spatial needs.

San Isidro’s prairie Hotel tower and plaza

The programme recquired to design a footbridge, a plaza and a tower by the riverside of the Manzanares river, in Madrid Río Park. The area is known for its anual festivity of the city of Madrid, a place where thousands of people congregate to celebrate. The plaza is a place for this festivity to take place, an elevated prairie which overlooks the city and the river. It is a triangulated plaza which unfolds in the form of a tower. Its structure becomes its own aesthetic, a steal structure which expands and contracts from the main body of the tower.

A monument. A monument is an artefact that retains in itself, intentionally or unintentionally, an element of the past – a definition which effectively encompasses any object resulting from human activity. It must represent an atitude, the country’s image. The monument extends over the lake, which represents a democratic stance, a monument for the people. Five islands are displayed on the lake, connected by floating walkways. Each one of them has its own function, the cablecar’s island, a theatre island or even the museum island.

Spanish villages are disappearing with their accelerated depopulation. We were asked to propose a solution which could revitalise these villages. In this case, the purpose was to bring back the essence of these villages, which is closely linked to the fields of crops and the kitchens’ of the people who have fed the country through years. The intervention in a village where the existing kitchens have their own character justified the new intervention, a kitchen the size of the village, which would turn into a new attraction site for future visitors.

Restoration of a textile factory, Grupo Arquitech

In the XIX century, the era of industrialization, emigrants from the French Alps disembark in the Mexican coast. They settle in the valley of río Blanco, acknowledging the potential of its waters to produce energy. The means used to domesticate the river and nature transforms its course and leads to the foundation of Ciudad Mendoza, a village which lives for textile production. Nowadays, its factory has lost its original purpose. It lays as a relic from a long gone past life. Adaptive reuse is the key to saving the heart of the village. Its huge warehouses will be brought back to life with new plazas and a flexible commercial space, as well as dwellings and workshops for the community to enjoy.

La Galería del Mezcal

Ahuacuotzingo, Guerrero, México Proposal for Architecture competition Félix Candela, 2020

‘Ahuacuotzingo, the small oak tree’. The production of artisanal mezcal takes place in a landscape of great mountains, where conditions are optimal for the growth of agaves. In the midst of these mountain, the small village of Ahuacuotzingo emerges, with its orthogonal streets, an artifice in nature. The contrast of elements springs from the contrast of nature vs human-made. It generates a curve, opposed to the line, peace opposed to chaos, ephemeral opposed to permanent. An arched gallery gives place to the mezcal destillery and a boutique hotel, experiencing the rawness of erath through the straight contact with Guerrero’s nature.

El Orden Monumental

Cultural Centre for the Arab Wall of Madrid Masters’ final thesis

Set in the western hill looking upon the river, we can find the ruins of the origins of the city of Madrid: the Arab Wall of Mayrit. The Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace stand close by, imposing a giant scale: how can we respond to this monumental scale? Moreover, the ruins of the Wall have been ignored through centuries, leaving an urban void full of chaos and disorder. How can we unify all these elements? The answer is the Monumental Order, a structural net which materialises in the form of a roof. This roof unifies the public plaza, as well as responding to the urban scale. The programme is found underneath the plaza. Its access through a giant gap becomes the core of the project, a spectacular atrium where interior and exterior merge.
