STILL NO MONEY FROM GOB SUNDAY DECEMBER 5, 2010

PUP Demands Immediate Disbursement…

More than one week after the Prime Minister starred in his own little sugar-cane soap opera canef ar mers have still not received their third payment from BSI and all indications are that the opening of the crop season will be delayed once again. Previously slated to start on December 6th, it had been pushed back to December 13th after the Prime Minister committed that funds would have been available this Monday. With that deadline come and gone and the commitment unfulfilled it is highly unlikely that the season will kick off as planned. In addition, farmers continue to suffer from the non-payment of monies which were due to them almost a month ago, on November 8th. The Northern Caucus of the Opposition People’s United Party this week issued a scathing release

condemning the inaction of the government, calling “on the Prime Minister and the Government of Belize to ensure that these monies are disbursed with immediate effect and that further measures

be put in place to ensure the future sustainability of the Sugar Industry in Belize.” The Northern Caucus release continued to state that the Opposition “expects that from the $10 million

loan that was approved that $3.2 million is to be made available to pay cane farmers their now overdue third payment, thereby allowing them to prepare for the 2010/2011 crop season. In a complete about-turn from his firm commitment made last week, the Prime Minister has backtracked to claim that the matter is completely out of government’s control. While last week Mr. Barrow’s political spindoctors lauded him as the savior of the industry, this week he has been noticeably hesitant to don the brilliant white robe and halo. In fact, in a release issued from the Office of the Prime Minister today, the leader of the nation places the ball squarely in BSI’s court. If BSI is unable to secure the waivers from its international creditors, then, (Continued on pg. 3)

Bad Back and All…

C a u g h t u p i n a l m o s t o rg a s m i c f r e n z y a n d i n t h e t h r o e s o f self-deification in the House of Representatives last week, Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow very quietly and casually informed sugar industry stake-holders that he would not be able to live up to his firm commitment made just two days previous. He very quietly and casually informed them that the monies which he had promised to make available on Monday of this week. Then he very loudly and in grand fashion proclaimed that bad back and all, he would embrace the role of martyr and selflessly jump on plane after plane to travel to the ends of the earth to seek funding if it became necessary. Strange, but his back never seems to be an issue when he and his wife leave the country very frequently to quaff champagne and make pretty on the cocktail circuit. Judging from the smile on his face whenever we are privileged enough to view the glamour shots snapped in fancy dining rooms and banquet halls all over the world, his back seems quite fine on those occasions. But see, this is all part of the Prime Minister ’s act. Canefarmers and stakeholders in the industry should now be willing to prostrate themselves in abject gratitude to Mr. Barrow. Imagine that this great man would so heroically hobble from plane to plane and locale to locale just for us. Oh glory! What a wonderful man Mr. Barrow is…how lucky we are to have him! Warm feelings fill our hearts and tears of joy run down our faces. This would perhaps be a very good time for the Prime Minister to emerge from his bubble and dip his toes into that thing we call reality. Apparently he does not fully comprehend that the sugar industry is at the brink of collapse. Apparently he does not fully comprehend that 8,000 farmers in the north have not received their third payment which was due to them a month ago. Apparently he does not grasp the concept of 50,000 Belizeans depending on the sugar industry for their survival. Mr. Barrow is still engaged in full dramatic array and while that makes for spectacular sound bites it does nothing for the industry or the people. Today the Prime Minister ’s Office issued a release which is patented politicking but offers no solution or resolution. The Prime Minister accuses the Opposition of being irresponsible when it calls for the immediate release of the loan funds so that farmers can receive their monies and the crop season can commence. According to the release, the government has ‘no control over this process.’ Mr. Barrow’s ploy is so transparent that it would be amusing if the situation were not so urgent. In grand style he promised plenty and reaped tremendous publicity benefits but when the time came for delivery he adroitly shifted the responsibility on to BSI. It is unfathomable that the Prime Minister was unaware of the difficulties which would arise from the request for waivers from the foreign banks. But that was of no concern to him. He chose very short-term public relations gains over any real resolution to the cris is . With that little gain rendered incons equential by the non-disbursement of the funds, the Prime Minister is now seeking to blame the Opposition in some form or fashion for his failure to honour his commitment. How ridiculous can the Prime Minister get? Then in very strange fashion the Prime Minister chides the Opposition for demanding payment for the cane-farmers, claiming that this is the time for national unity. Again this is nothing but a half-hearted deflection of attention from the real issues which serves no purpose and certainly does nothing for the industry. In an interview today Leader of the Opposition John Briceno offered very apt advice to the Prime Minister, stating that he should talk much less and think a little more. While the Prime Minister is fully engaged in spouting rhetorical flourishes while doing very little of substance, the industry gets every nearer to the brink of disaster and our people in the north continue to suffer. The Opposition reiterates its demand that the Prime Minister immediately arrange for the release of the monies which were c o m m i t t e d . I f M r. B a r r o w i s u n s u r e o f w h i c h w a y t o t u r n t h e Opposition stands ready to advise the learned fellow of the direction to take for the benefit of our people, the industry and the nation.

STILL NO MONEY (Continued from pg. 1)

GOB will provide no money. In that event cane-farmers will not receive their overdue third payment and the industry will crash. Shortly after the final deafening alarm was raised in

t h e i n d u s t r y, t h e l e a d e r o f t h e Opposition convened a team and with input from representatives from the Union and business sector presented the Prime Minister with a draft proposal for the way forward. That proposal included a suggestion

for the immediately disbursement of monies with government providing a sovereign guarantee. In the Prime Minister ’s manifestation of the proposals that plan never materialized. In an interview with the Belize Times today, PUP Party Leader John Briceno chastised the Prime

Minister for his lack of decisive and necessary action in resolving the immediate crisis in the industry. Briceno reiterated that “each day t h is m o n ey is d ela y ed b rin g s additional challenges to cane farmers and affects their ability to deliver the best possible quality product to the factory.”

time they left. The cameras show how Longsworth drove off as the attackers were fleeing the scene and the gunman running back to shoot him. Longsworth is known to many people because he is the barbecue chef in front of the Eagle’s Restaurant, a business whose pioneer is his father, Pastor Howell Longsworth. He was with his family just an hour before he was killed, sharing his plans for a house he was building. Ayala,

meanwhile, was telling friends of tentative plans to visit with friends and relatives back to his country. Police have detained Ervin Reneau pending investigations and are looking for another suspect. The two murders bring to 120 the number of chilling murders for this bloody year, and that is because there are still 29 more days to go before 2010 is history. This is by far the most violent year, if not ever, then in recent history, with no means for a solution in sight.

Richard. But despite the setback with some of the programmes in HIV awareness and First AID, their plans for the Christmas and relief continue. All it means is that Red Cross staff and volunteers, who had planned on closing off early for the Christmas season, must now work long hours to try and redouble their work and get things done in time for their Christmas project. Until the building is restored, the Red

Cross will temporarily relocate its operations to a portion of the St. Catherine Academy Convent on Hudson Street. Why anyone would want to destroy a humanitarian organization is anyone's guess, but Bowman said during their relief efforts immediately after Hurricane Richard, they had received many threats. The damages have been estimated at more than $250,000 but everything was insured. Police have no suspects so far.

number of men, approached the security guard and one of them shot him at point blank range, after which they stole his weapon and then turned on Longsworth, who was merely a customer purchasing fuel at the time. He died about half hour later while receiving medical treatment. The establishment's 12 cameras picked up the attack from the time the murderers arrived on the scene to the

World AIDS Day

We d n e s d a y D e c e m b e r 1 s t marked the 22th commemoration o f Wo r l d A I D S D a y. T h e international commemoration of World AIDS Day in not only a time to bring awareness to the issue, it is also a time for everyone to assess the work being done to educate and inform people about AIDS. Of course it is also a time when reports about the number of people living with and dying as a result of HIV/AIDS are reported and usually in Belize the news is bleak. Wo r l d w i d e m o r e t h a n 3 3 million people are infected with HIV and AIDS, and while there is still no known cure for the disease, the quality of life for those infected has improved dramatically. In Latin America and the Caribbean over 2 million people are living with HIV and AIDS with 77,000 new cases. Here in Belize it is disturbing that the Ministry of Health has not yet released the number of Belizean who are HIV positive or the number of Belizeans who died from HIV/ AIDS. These statistics help those on the front line of the fight to rid our country of this disease, to assess progress and where to focus efforts. While Belizeans can draw some comfort from the fact that the rate of infection in Belize i s i m p r o v i n g s l o w l y, t h e r e i s still serious concern over the fact that too many of our young people are engaging in sexual activities that puts them at risk. Today the highest incidents of HIV in Belize is among young Belizeans who are between the ages of 15 and 24 years old and according to the experts, this equals to twice the prevalence rate among the rest of Belizeans. In 2007, the last statistics available on Belize, there were 3600 people living with AIDS in Belize and our prevalence rate was at 2.1. That year 200 persons had died from AIDS related deaths. Since then the National AIDS Commission Reports that there were 456 new infections in 2008, 357 new infections in 2009 and 263 new infections in 2010. This is welcomed news and a clear indication that things are moving in a positive direction. Two years ago, a scientist in Germany treated a patient

with AIDS and cleared the virus doing bone marrow transplant. To date this is the only known c as e w h er e s o me o n e h a s b e e n cured of AIDS. The treatment for HIV and AIDS continues to be anti-retroviral medicines. Currently there are 852 persons in Belize who are receiving these medicines, however too many Belizean wait until it is too late to start the treatment or are not receiving any treatment.

In 2002, the Global Fund t o F i g h t A I D S , Tu b e r c u l o s i s and Malaria was born and the dream of billions for fighting the pandemic became a reality. Around that same time then Prime Minister Said Musa and o u r d i p l o m a t s i n N e w Yo r k and in the region together with Ambassador Dolores Balderamos-Garcia and members of the NGO Community in Belize launched our initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS. This commitment was so important that the Prime Minister himself spearheaded the movement. As a result of this today Belizeans receive free anti-retroviral treatment. The key to fighting AIDS includes a multi-pronged approach • The Ministry of health leaders must continue to develop and implement AIDS strategies and operational plans to integrate prevention and treatment services; and increase information about prevention.

Sunday, December 5, 2010 • We must continue efforts with International donors for funding our national HIV prevention programs. • We must continue to work with UN agencies to assess the soundness of our national HIV prevention strategies, identifying instances where national plans conflict with available evidence about the dynamics of HIV incidence. • AIDS activists and other civil society groups should strongly advocate for the simultaneous scaling up of HIV prevention and treatment. Wo r k i n g t o g e t h e r w e c a n turn things around in Belize by making greater awareness about HIV and AIDS, change o u r b e h a v i o u r, e n c o u r a g e o u r young people to practice safe sex and rid ourselves of this deadly disease.

For sale… Guess there ain’t nothing sacred when it comes to this crooked UDP bunch, at least when it comes to land. This columnist has received reliable information that the Chairman of Unitedville in the Cayo South constituency has orchestrated the sale of the community center/hurricane shelter. How could something like that happen? Well who knows, but somehow the gentleman managed to get all necessary documents from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the sale of the property and building on it is now a done deal. For sure this one bears more looking into and we’ll have more on this scurvy deal in next week’s issue… If Da Noh Soh! In Landy we trust…LOL! Somehow I thought that the phrase was supposed to be In God We Trust, but apparently our effeminate buddy who wants to run in Orange Walk east has different ideas about that. Hard at work in his campaign, Landy Burns has erected

a nauseating display of billboards and signs proclaiming his godliness, as if the people from Orange Walk don’t know better. I was in Orange Walk a couple days ago and went by the Louisiana Government School where there are at least five large billboards right in front of the school expressing trust for Landy. It was a little funny because the grass on which the signs were placed was overgrown and there was garbage everywhere. Maybe the people of Orange Walk would trust you a little more if you actually managed to get any work done, Landy. Try not to be so much like your bald boss who is a firm believer in the success of glitz and glamour without any substance whatsoever. Oh and by the way, did you ever account for the money from the desks which were given to you for schools in the area? If Da Noh Soh! Corrupt Carlos? UDP aspirant for Caribbean Shores and young up and coming dodo-bird Roger Espejo has

The Belize Times

come out swinging at his political opponent Carlos Perdomo. This

intrepid columnist was able to confirm just this week that Espejo is campaigning on an anti-corruption platform and is lambasting Perdomo for his role in the still ongoing and unresolved immigration scandal. In fact, Espejo

has even bought advertising space in a local newspaper, the National Perspective, in which he makes direct reference to corruption in relation to Carlos. Hmmm! For his part, it seems that Perdomo is confident that he will be able to pull out a win based on the judicious doling out of funds and goodies. One resident of Kelly Street in Caribbean Shores openly mocked Espejo, claiming that by the time he handed out his little chum change and walked away, representatives from a very well known ‘beverage’ powerhouse were right behind with cash in hand and liquor to waste… this one will be nasty, folks. That’s for sure….If Da Noh Soh! Turning up the heat… My favourite minister/ electrician with the intellect deficit is turning up the heat in Corozal Bay and has told anyone who cares to listen that no matter what it takes ‘Casino’ Campos will never beat

him. And don’t tell anyone I said so but Naco claims that he has a spy in Campos’ camp and knows every more Campos will make before he

5

makes it. Case in point…Campos was all set to launch his propaganda splash this week, putting up posters and signs all over town advising residents to ditch the brain-dead Naco. Somehow Naco found out about it and managed to get the jump on Campos. Residents of Corozal have now been treated to wonderful, glorious full-colour posters of Naco applied to every single lamp-post in Corozal Bay. Okay then. It might be a good idea for Naco to keep an eye on those expensive posters, since ‘Casino’ Campos has been heard to say that they won’t be up for too much longer….If Da Noh Soh! In memoriam… I’m feeling really, really guilty about the smear campaign launched against my poor buddy Nemencio in Corozal North. I should never have let Pablo influence me…and all because he is backing Lupita Longsworth in the area and wants no part of the nasty Nemencio. Anyway, after news came out about Nemencio’s drunken rampage and allegations that he had been found naked on the side of the road in Patchakan, reliable reports are that Naco paid

a special visit to Belmopan where he tried to convince el mero mero that Nemencio is just too much of an embarrassment to the UDP and should be asked to desist from running at the next convention. Baldy apparently hasn’t made up his mind yet but sources claim that

902

he is under tremendous pressure to sanction the drunken one especially after he brought the ax down on Castro’s head last week. Word is that the decision will be made this week but if I were Nemencio I wouldn’t be too very comfortable right about now….If Da Noh Soh! Fairtrade funds… There are serious allegations coming out of Corozal North right now that UDP aspirant and Chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board Hugo Patt has been using, shall we

say, unauthorized funds to conduct his campaign in Corozal North. Maybe we should leave that one alone for now until we have more proof but let’s just say that a certain drunken UDP area representative who is mentioned in this very same column has been heard accusing Patt of some very dastardly deeds with Fairtrade funds. Will all the mess and chaos in Corozal right about now, who knows what’s true anymore? What we do know is that Patt is spending big bucks in the area where he is campaigning with his buddy David Akierman who seems to have completely given up his job in the Corozal Free Zone. The lines are clearly drawn in the area with David Akierman supporting Hugo Patt, Pablo Marin supporting Lupita Longsworth and the UDP Executive in the area supporting Carlos Vallejos. We’ll have great fun with this one before much longer….If Da Noh Soh!

It’s been days since the Kendall Bridge was washed away. How much longer must we wait for a new bridge, Mr. Prime Minister?

THE BLUE MACHINE PUP Northern Caucus Meets

PUP Northern Caucus Calls For Immediate Action in the Sugar Cane Industry The Northern Caucus of the People’s United Party (PUP) is seriously concerned about the fact that to date the promised funding for the third payment owed to the cane farmers by the Belize Sugar Industries Ltd (BSI) has not been paid. At its quarterly meeting held last Saturday, 27 November 2010, the Northern Caucus of the PUP discussed the future of the Sugar Cane Industry in Belize and expressed its satisfaction with the decision of the National Assembly to agree on a mechanism by which BSI could access $10 million in funds. The Nor thern Caucus expects that from the $10 million loan that was approved that $3.2 million is to be made availa ble to pay cane farmers their now overdue third payment, thereby allowing them to prepare for the 2010/2011 crop season. These funds were supposed to be ready on Monday, 29 November 2010, however to date no funds have been made available and the cane farmers have not been given their much needed third payment. Each day th is money is delayed brings additional challenges to cane farmers and affects their ability to deliver the best possible quality product to the factory. The Northern Caucus of the People’s United Party calls on the Prime Minister and the Government of Belize to ensure that these monies are disbursed with immediate effect and that further measures be put in place to ensure the future sustainability of the Sugar Industry in Belize.

UDP Politics as usual Still no money…

As we go to press tonight, sugar-cane farmers and the Belize Sugar Industries have still not received the money which was promised to them by Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow. After almost a month of no intervention in the increasingly tense situation, last week Mr. Barrow grandstanded masterfully at a press conference where he claimed credit for figuring out a way in which the farmers and BSI could receive their money. Mr. Barrow even went so far as to instruct his press office to come up with a wonderful video-ad in which all parties were heaping effusive thanks on him for resolving the issue. That was all well and good and everybody was ecstatic but like with so many of the leader ’s promises to date, the money has still not materialized. According to the PM the monies would have been available for use on Monday of this week but on Thursday at a special sitting of the House he casually dropped a bombshell on stakeholders, telling them that because of the Thanksgiving holiday the banks weren’t open to do business. That was last Thursday and now a full week after the money has still not been disbursed. So the farmers have still not received their third payment and the season which has already been delayed will in all likelihood be delayed even further. Just another show… When all is said and done, the Prime Minister ’s commitment to resolve the crisis which threatens to collapse the sugar industry was just another show, more glitter without even an iota of substance. Our leader made sure he came across as the great savior of the industry but it was all an act. Mr. Barrow knew full well that getting the waivers from ING and FCIB was a difficult proposition at best. Why would any bank release collateral held on its debtors? Just because Mr. Barrow said that they would? Now that the show is over Mr. Barrow has placed all responsibility for the loan in BSI’s court when any fool can tell you that if BSI had the wherewithal to finagle such moves we would not have been in this situation in the first place. What Mr. Barrow needs to do is provide a sovereign guarantee of the funds right away and make that money available to the cane-farmers in the north and BSI. Mr. Barrow needs to stop playing games with our people. Every day without the monies committed by Mr. Barrow is another day in which our people suffer and another blow to the already comatose sugar industry. How many more?

How many more people must be gunned down in cold blood or brutally pummeled to death before Dean Oliver acknowledges that he placed the wrong man at the helm of the Police Department? He certainly knows that Doug Singh is a dud, but knowing it and doing something about it are two horses of a totally different colour. The news this week was chock-full of murders and shootings and robberies and assaults and all indications are that things will get a lot worse as Christmas approaches and financial pressures increase. Has anybody heard anything about Operation Restore Belize lately? Has anybody heard anything about safe zones and additional deployment of police officers and BDF personnel? Seriously, the only thing that Operation Restore Belize has given us so far is a song. It was a great song but it was only a song. The fact is that it is Barrow’s fault that

7

we are where we are when it comes to crime. Carlos Perdomo was a complete waste as Minister of National Security but because of politics he was allowed to damage the ministry to no end. When he simply could not be tolerated any longer he was replaced by another complete dud whose only bright idea was opening a police gym so that officers could work out. Last year ’s murder record has been blown out of the water and there is still a month to go in the year. It is past time for Mr. Barrow to deal with the problem. Doug Singh needs to be put out to pasture. The Belizean people are crying out for help.

Tragedy… On a very personal note the staff of the Belize Times expresses our condolences to the family of David Longsworth who was senselessly gunned down. All he did was stop for fuel with his wife and child while a robbery was allegedly being committed. He and a security guard are the latest casualties in a vicious crime wave which has paralyzed our nation. Mr. Barrow will not stand at a podium vowing that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the murderer to justice as he did for his law partner and friend. Apart from the grief of family and friends left behind these murders will go down as just more alarming statistics without any word from the Prime Minister or his useless Minister of Police. Rest in Peace David… Dumb vs. Dumber… What used to be cause for amusement just doesn’t seem so funny anymore. This weekend UDP voters will decide whether they want to stick with the hopeless, useless Carlos Perdomo or replace him with the totally incompetent Roger Espejo. Neither one of them is worth anything. Carlos Perdomo has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is not suited for public office. He wrecked the Ministry of National Security and then went to the Ministry of Immigration and screwed that up royally too. Roger Espejo is no better. It’s not like his stint at City Hall has been one worth mentioning. It’s not like he’s done anything at all beside collect his hefty stipend at the end of the month. Can anybody even remember what portfolio Espejo is responsible for? Who knows? That’s how bad things have gotten in the UDP when the choice is between Carlos Perdomo and Roger Espejo. Blind as a boots… Okay so really…Minister of Works Boots Martinez is just noticing that the streets of the city are in horrible condition? Shame! The thing which really gets to me is that the United Democratic Party continues to treat the Belizean people like fools. For almost three years this City Council and this Ministry of Works have neglected the city. The only infrastructure the Ministry of Works can boast about is the paving of Albert and Regent Streets and that took almost a year. The City Council can’t even boast that. So now Boots is saying that if we vote for Carlos Perdomo the Ministry will magically swoop in, wave a magic wand and all streets will be paved. Yeah right. Boots isn’t even trying to be sensitive and subtle about the whole thing, which is what pisses me off. He really does think that the people of the city are idiots who believe everything our UDP ministers tell us even when the evidence points to something completely different. Just look around, people, and you can see the ruins of the city thanks to this UDP. Ain’t nothing gonna be different under this UDP…things will just keep getting worse. Don’t let the UDP take us for fools.

– The Best Medicine – good for what ails you

The Best Medicine opened at the Biltmore Hotel last Friday evening and showcases a galaxy of Belizean stars. The minds behind two of this year’s most memorable theatre productions, Devilish and Trea$ure, Gato Negro Productions have put together another winner. It is the story of old Mr. Moody, a professional hypochondriac who believes he is very, very sick and has only one thing on his mind his complicated illnesses. Really, the sickness is mostly in his mind, and in the bills that his doctors send him and the prescriptions they write. With one main attending physician and 17 or 18 (he forgets) additional doctors, he’s so sick that he cannot see what’s going on in his own home. His daughter is in love with a most unsuitable young man – an entertainer. His housekeeper is opinionated, bossy and full of herself and has more than one trick hiding under her apron. Moody is married to a beautiful schemer who has him under her spell and who just wants to enjoy her inheritance as soon as possible. His dastardly doctor wants to treat him as often and as expensively as possible. When Mr. Moody, who is also a music lover, hatches a plot to marry his daughter to his doctor’s intellectually challenged nephew,

all hell breaks loose. The cast features writer-director Joey Clarke as old Moody himself – and a funnier old enema-addicted fart you’ve never seen. Joining him is Diane Garcia as Toinette, his brilliantly brazen housekeeper, and stage veteran Pamela Gideon, in a wickedly luscious turn as a trophy wife gone bad. Jason Pasquale is hysterically pompous as Dr Malaprop, and Rodvern Lino shines as his completely inadequate nephew with a license to malpractice. Berne Velasquez surprises in his first theatre performance as the hunky love interest with the golden

voice; and in her debut appearance, teenage actress Tasneem Bhojwani sparkles as Moody’s pretty daughter who only has eyes for one guy – and it’s not the one her dad approves. Ishmael Quiroz rounds out the players as the good brother, Uncle Hector who is liked by all and only has everyone’s -well, almost everyone’s - best interest at heart. The play is a lighthearted romp suitable for audiences aged 9 – 99, and as an added bonus also features live singing under the able direction of Jason Guerrero. You are guaranteed enough laughs to make you forget your own troubles

for a precious two hours. After all, isn’t laughter the best medicine of all? What is particularly attractive and novel about this production is that show patrons may enjoy libations along with the laughter, and during the play, servers wait discreetly nearby to ensure that you don’t miss a single witty exchange, or visual gag. Drama and drinks do make for a most pleasant evening’s entertainment. There is still time to catch the Best Medicine in its last weekend at the Biltmore Hotel, on December 4, with true dinner theatre, the proceeds of which go to charity. Your $60 dinner theatre ticket will allow you to enjoy a complete Dinner Theatre package, including the full evening’s entertainment. Dinner will be served at 7pm, and show time starts at 8pm. The proceeds from the Dinner Gala will be contributed to projects of the Rotary Club of Belize. Tickets to see the show only are $30 each. There will also be an encore matinee performance with theatrestyle seating on Sunday, December 5, at 6pm. So, if you are need of a good prescription for love, laughter and a great night out, choose the Best Medicine this weekend.

Watchman murdered on the job in Orange Walk

It is apparent by now that the Barrow regime cannot get a handle on the spiraling crime wave, particularly murders for 2010. There is hardly ever a day that passes without a murder occurring. And unlike previous times when it was only the old Capital that recorded frequent homicides, the evidence alone this week proves that the rest of the country too is prone to vicious attacks. This week alone San Pedro and Orange Walk lost two of their residents at the hands of crime. In Orange Walk, a senior citizen was brutally beaten in the head with a blunt object, quite possibly a 100 pound cylinder of petrol at his workplace. three years. Diaz, who has had extensive service as a watchman in his life, was believed to have been taken by surprise and was attacked by perhaps as many as three men. They most likely jumped over the fence and then dragged him to the rear section of the yard under a shed and pummeled his head with a heavy object, before placing his body on a piece of cardboard and covering it with the cylinder and a white sheet. The killer or killers then proceeded to break into a wooden door to the business and removed light bulbs

worth $321.00 before the alarm at the business tripped and scared them off. The owners of the business, Ramon Cervantes and his family, heard the siren from their home not far away and when they arrived they discovered the door breached and Diaz’s body. Orange Walk police have in their custody a number of men who they are questioning. While they strongly believe that the attackers had been studying the business for a while, they have not yet located the murder weapon nor have they linked anyone to the murder.

The lack of grave space at the Lord Ridge Cemetery has become such an acute problem that the Belize City Council had been putting people to rest in the walkways leading to other graves further to the back of the Lord Ridge Cemetery. This had been happening for the past four months after the Council finally realized that it was running out of space and then asked the Ministry of Natural Resources to approve a portion of the Hattieville Community to become Belize City’s burial ground. All the while this Council had been burying our departed loved ones in the entrances and walkways that were once used to reach the graves located further inside the cemetery. What this means is that when we visit our dead now who have been buried there for the past several years, we will have to hop, skip and scale the over 100 new tombs that this inefficient Council has had grieving families place their dead when they failed to provide an appropriate spot that has been needed since they got into office the first term. Then the Council sought to take the media on a tour of the proposed cemetery in July when its access road was under two feet of water in some places and the images backfired in their face. Families don’t want to place their dead in aquariums. We want an adequate grave site, that’s all. The media representatives had to kick off shoes, roll up pants and wade through the muddy water for several hundred yards to reach the site for nothing because neither then, nor now, has anything been done to the area. A bulldozer was used recently, perhaps earlier this week to clear away about 100 square yards of the trees and brush to accommodate the first few bodies that will be placed there. Bad as it is, the Council continues to insult and offend its residents wantonly. This week Councilor Wayne Usher told a television reporter on the local news that the price will not only rise, but will more than triple, from $75 to $225. When the reporter asked him how the Council proposes to deal with families who absolutely cannot afford to cough up that steep price for a grave spot, Usher told the reporter

and Belize City residents that for us to be able to afford their inflated price, we have to now cut down on the number of nights (the wake) that we allow relatives and close friends over to our homes in memory of our deceased loved ones. He continued in his insulting tone and suggested that these same poor families go to the credit union and get loans to deal with the expense. That loan will have to now be almost four times what it costs now to bury the dead at Lord Ridge because taxi fares to the mile 13 location will also triple. Under this UDP regime, we’re burdened when we’re alive and we suffer even in death. It doesn’t end there. In fact, from the start when the news broke about the ridiculous proposal to bury city residents at the location, no consultation took place with the people in the community. Hattieville residents could not believe their eyes and ears when the news aired that City Hall was now eyeballing a portion of their community to relocate Belize City’s cemetery. Even though the Council skirted dealing directly with the issue with them and went directly to the Ministry of Natural Resources, they are still asking for a meeting with someone from City Hall. The residents, over 3,000 strong, through their Village Council, are contemplating taking up legal advice based on the Constitution and their rights as a community against the heavy-handed and arrogant decision to open the cemetery there without getting their input and also the maintenance costs that the facility will incur on Hattieville. The people are of the view that their needs for better infrastructure and housing are more urgent than would allow them to accommodate the needs of another area out of their jurisdiction. That argument is amplified when the residents point out that while the Belize City Council is commandeering a portion of their community, the only one that stands to gain from the cemetery there is the Council and once again Hattieville residents will be left to take on the burden. What other ludicrous proposal will City Hall and the UDP come up with next? It’s frightening to even think about it.

Lack of burial spaces continues to haunt City Hall

Third Murder Rocks La Isla Bonita in one Month!

The country's number one tourist hotspot, San Pedro, was rocked three times in one month with brutal and unsolved murders, creating an unnecessary black eye on the international market for tourism and plunging the country into more dismal straits. Sunday morning the island would see its third murder in less than 30 days when Bejon Wade, 20, originally from mainland Belize, was brutally beaten, shot in the head and flung aside on a street in Boca del Rio, San Pedro, to die by two men who had targeted a friend of his. The assault began at around ten on Saturday night at the island's Central Park near the beachfront where the two men accosted Wade and his

friend, allegedly over drugs. The confrontation would develop into

a brawl and eventually Wade's friend managed to escape, but he didn't. The two men beat him to the point that he was unable to stand up and they then drove him to San Juan Street where he lived and beat him some more. At around 3:30 Sunday morning, a resident of the area heard what sounded like a muffled gunshot, and sure enough by daybreak when someone alerted police of a dying man at the side of the street, they showed up to find an unconscious Wade barely clinging onto life. He had been leaning against a concrete fence less than 20 feet from the gate that leads to his apartment room. Wade held onto life on the street side for over two hours until he was finally taken to the San Pedro Poly Clinic where he died at 7:15 Sunday morning from a single gunshot at point blank range to his left temple. Later that morning police found

an expended nine millimeter shell and impounded a golf cart belonging to a citizen of the Island, which bore blood stains. They believe Wade's killers used the cart to transport him to where he was found and then to fled the scene. The cart was found half-submerged in the lagoon on the west side of the Island. Police do not believe, however, that the owner of the golf cart was involved in the incident because he had not been on the island from last week. They do suspect that a friend of his borrowed his cart and used it to commit the crime. San Pedro police have launched a search for Wade's friend who has disappeared and the two attackers who inflicted the beating on him before shooting him to death. While wide speculation is that the murder was drug-related, police would not readily say, and would only volunteer that it was the result of a previous dispute. But Islanders say that the young man, a labourer by trade, was rounded up through his affiliation with friends involved in the illicit drug trade - an affiliation which eventually caught up with him.

There must be a bigger motive behind Prime Minister Dean Barrow's reason for sacking Edmund "Clear the Land" Castro so swiftly and with such media coverage as he did last week. In his usual way of posturing for the cameras and playing selfrighteous, the Prime Minister tried his best to come off as this "no-nonsense leader" when in truth, another Minister of State, Juan Coy, had been involved in wrongdoing before and he was only suspended for six months for facilitating a truckload of contraband goods across the Guatemalan border. That was a crime as corrupt if not greater than what Castro allegedly committed against a lady. In fact, what Coy did was worse because the act compromised the rights of every law-abiding citizen. In Castro's case, Barrow kept referring to the Belizean American woman who alleges, with some proof, that Castro received $48,000 from her in exchange for 20 acres of land papers for which have not yet

been handed to her. But Castro was quoted in another medium as saying that while the woman did give him money for land, it was the Lands Department, run by the Deputy Prime Minster Gaspar Vega, that had failed to process the land papers documents. Castro also rejects any wrongdoing on his part, but Barrow, apparently hell bent on "clearing out" the Minister of State from one of the country's biggest portfolios, backed up his story by saying that a government minister should not accept money from a citizen for the kind of transaction that Castro did. Whatever the case, one can't help but wonder why Barrow was quick to pull the rug from under Castro, who had been very visible since getting elected in 2008. With endorsements right around the corner for the 2013 General Elections, it is not too far from thought if Barrow has his eyes on someone else to replace Castro in Belize Rural North, and by extension, the Ministry of Works.

Castro charges back but Barrow unyielding

Cuba's health Jamaican scientist lands blow in cancer fight solidarity with Haiti

A Jamaican scientist is being celebrated on the international stage for finding an effective treatment for some types of cancer. Dr Lawrence Williams, a research scientist at the Scientific Research Council (SRC), has been awarded an international patent on a compound isolated from the Guinea Hen Weed as a protein complex of dibenzyl trisulphide. The SRC said the protein complex has the ability to kill a wide range of cancers. The Jamaican's discovery has the potential to fight various kinds of cancers, a few of which are: melanoma, lung cancer and breast cancer. The molecule also has implications for the treatment of ageing diseases. The SRC noted that, with more than 13 years dedicated to this research, Williams has revealed that the complex is superior in kill-

ing cancer cells relative to the pure compound found in the Guinea Hen Weed-dibenzyl trisulphide. "This remarkable breakthrough comes at a time when the world is crippled by the effects of cancer, as it is one of the leading killers globally," the SRC asserted. The SRC said it joined the remainder of the international medical fraternity in celebrating the scientific breakthrough. "This is good news for Jamaica, given its ability to contribute to health, longevity and as a major foreign exchange earner. Williams' discovery could change the face of medicine as we now know it," the SRC declared. Williams said that the next stage is conducting clinical trials of the compound and the development of a pharmaceutical agent. The SRC, one of Jamaica's chief proponents of scientific research and development, commended its team member on his "outstanding contribution to science". Rights to the patent are shared with Dr George Levy, a Jamaicaborn medical doctor living in the United States.

Venezuelan flooding claims 21

Heavy flooding and mudslides have claimed at least 21 lives in Venezuela, where President Hugo Chavez declared a state of emergency in the state of Falcon, authorities said. The victims were in the state of Miranda and the capital district, but problems were reported elsewhere, the state-run VTV network said Tuesday. About 32,000 people in Falcon state are displaced, according to the AVN national news agency. Another 25,000 are affected elsewhere across the country, AVN said. Government agencies are responding to the crisis, VTV reported. Chavez told the network that

heavy rains in recent days are worse than in similar conditions in 1999. More rainfall is expected over the next few days. "I pray to God we do not have to declare a national disaster as occurred in Colombia," the president said. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos declared a state of calamity in 28 of the nation's 32 states in midNovember because of heavy rains and flooding that have affected 1.2 million people. Chavez is allowing 20 displaced families to temporarily live in structures on the grounds of his Miraflores Palace, VTV said Monday.

Cuba's latest inspiring example of commitment to the suffering masses in Haiti is the rushing this past weekend of an additional 300 doctors, nurses and health technicians to the earthquake-wrecked, cholera-plagued and povertystricken nation of our Caribbean Community (Caricom). This demonstration of practical solidarity, characteristic of the government and people of Cuba in responding to human tragedies across continents, has resulted from an international appeal by Valerie Amos, United Nations under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs. As Haitians continued burying their dead from the cholera epidemic — estimated at some 2,000 — and others are caught up in political conflicts over allegations of electoral fraud at last Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections, the desperate need for doctors and medical personnel continues to rive the UN appeal and the humanitarian response such as Cuba's. Disclosure of the latest batch of Cuban doctors, nurses and technicians came in a statement released in Havana on the weekend focused on Reflections on Haiti — Underdevelopment and Genocide by Fidel Castro. The legendary former president of that Caribbean nation that continues to survive the horrendous social and economic consequences of a 48-year-old economic blockade by the United States of America said that his country's additional 300 medical personnel, would now add up to more than I,200 doctors, nurses and health workers in Haiti. Some of the Cuban medical teams were working in Haitian communities long before last January's horrific earthquake disaster and the spread of the cholera epidemic from October. The UN's plea The Cuban leader noted how discouraging it was to learn last week from UN Under-Seretary General Amos that "so far less than ten per cent" of an estimated emergency need of US$I64 mil-

lion had been realised. Castro subsequently noted that as of November 27 (eve of last Sunday's controversial elections), "there had not been a single cholera death in seven days within the 37 treatment centres being run by the Cuban Medical Mission in Haiti". There was no confirmation from the Caricom Secretariat yesterday on the current number of doctors and health workers mobilised for services in Haiti since the outbreak of cholera. In the unfolding tragedies of Haiti, the earthquake of January destroyed the water and sewer network wherever they had existed, and where millions live in tents and often lacking latrines and "everything gets mixed up together". In embracing the plea of the UN's officials for quick and meaningful responses with emergency assistance of medical personnel and resources, the former leader of Cuba for some half a century said that only ten per cent of affected Haitians living outside of the capital, Port-au-Prince, had received supplies of clean water and soap. In reporting on the work of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti, now reinforced with last weekend's contingent of some 300 doctors, nurses and health workers of the "Henry Reeves Brigade", Castro explained: "Almost 40 per cent of the sick have been looked after by members of the Cuban Medical Brigade which has 965 doctors, nurses and technicians who have managed to reduce the number of dead (from cholera) to less than one for 100...". In a general appeal, Castro stressed that it was "of vital importance that we avoid the epidemic extending to other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean because in today's circumstances this would cause extraordinary harm to the nations in this hemisphere.... "We urgently need to seek efficient and rapid solutions in the fight against that epidemic," he said.

Discriminatory Christianity He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” Mark 16:15 “In Him the distinctions between Jew and Gentile, slave and free man, male and female, disappear; you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 When Jesus came to save us from our sins He met a world that was callously divided. Only priests could perform certain rites, Pharisees and Sadducees held a special place in Judaism and the tabernacle. You had to take up all sorts of offerings and kill all kinds “pure animals”. In fact you had to do all sorts of hula hoops and “pupa licks” to get to God. Then Jesus came and revolutionized faith and salvation. He ended up crushing up all the other commandments and leaving one commandment: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:36-40 It seems that in Belize some organization, it may be the Women’s Department, is celebrating 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, as result the United Nations Development Fund for Women created daily reflections based on Bible verses for each day during those 16 Days of Activism. When I saw this I realized that there was an entire calendar of events for the days. Unfortunately the calendar was only in one news paper that I saw. That was very unfortunate because the material from the UNDF was very good. Let me give you two examples, being the first and last of these reflections so far: “November 25: Day 1 Equality? Yes! John 4:9 --- “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” This verse falls within the long narrative of John 4: 1-42 which records Jesus, a Jew, and his encounter with a Samaritan woman. In the time of this story, Jewish men were forbidden to speak publicly with a woman. Additionally, there was a rift between Jews and Samaritans, these races did not speak with each other. So this Samaritan woman would have experienced discrimination because of her gender and her race. Hence, you can imagine her surprise that Jesus would take the time to talk with her as she was silenced in the public space. Many persons and organizations have based their treatment of women on biblical passages. Abused women have accepted these teachings and endured various forms of discrimination. Jesus‟ actions denounced, rejected gender and race based forms of discrimination. He gave her a voice and affirmed her as a person of worth. Jesus‟ actions ran counter culture to the prevailing practices. Today let us say no to all forms of discriminations. Question- How can we affirm the dignity and worth of each human being? December 1, Day 7 Building Bridges St. Luke 1:39-45 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” Agents of violence against women have often times been our own sisters, other women. We see this in the workplace, the envy, jealousy at being passed over for promotions; the resentment towards younger women by older women and the eventual emotional abuse and sometimes physical abuses. Here we have a story of an older and younger woman who by their actions denounced this kind of violencesisters against sisters. Elizabeth, the older woman was by-passed by the younger, the teenage girl Mary who was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. This could have been the recipe for violence, rivalry, discrimination especially as Mary was from a lower social class. Instead, Elizabeth extended hospitality, invited her to stay at her home during the early stages of her pregnancy, offering wisdom and protection from the swirling gossip. Building bridges is one way of rejecting discrimination among sisters: Bridges across ages, classes, races in the fight against violence against women.” See, rather insightful reflections. It is again disturbing that the calendar was not less discriminatingly publicized. Budget might have been an issue for the department or organization but when you are doing something so important as speaking out against discrimination and gender based violence, your message must not be hid under a bushel or be tinged with the vulnerability of being accused of only reaching a privileged or select group. We should not don’t care which party is in power or which race or which gender is in power, we the people must do as Henry Gordon always reminds us to, which is to follow the constitution where it says: “WHEREAS the people of Belize- (a) affirm that the Nation of Belize shall be founded upon principles which acknowledge the supremacy of God, faith in human rights and fundamental freedoms, the position of the family in a society of free men and free institutions, the dignity of the human person and the equal and inalienable rights with which all members of the human family are endowed by their Creator;…” Under the Gospel all distinctions are done away, as either helping or hindering; all are equally welcome to Christ, and all have an equal need of him; all persons of all sects, and conditions, and sexes, who believe in Him, become one family through Him; they are one body, of which he is the head. Therefore, as Christians and one body of Christ we stand together against discrimination and against gender based violence. Tell this evil stronghold on our country, “Get thee behind me, Satan”, as for me and my country we will serve the Lord!

The event "kicked off" with the playing of the Belize National Anthem, performed by a "line up" of violin players who did an excellent job with the Belize National Anthem. All the participating players, as well as the "early bird" spectators stood at attention for the playing of the Anthem. Immediately following the Anthem, the action started with "qualifying" matches in the Men Singles division o n 7 t a b l e s . Wi t h t h i s r o u n d completed, the "knock out" competition of 39 competitors started in the MEN SINGLES. The Men Singles division progressed with the top 8 rated players making it to the Quarter Finals. In the end, David Jones, Tu x Va s q u e z , N e l Ay u s o a n d Zhi Chen made it through and into the Semi Finals. The first Semi Final between David Jones, #1 Ranked, and Tux Vasquez, #4 Ranked went to the "very end" with David Jones eventually winning 3 to 2 over Tux Vasquez, and moving Jones into the Finals. The other Semi Final was no different as it also went down to the "wire" with Zhi Chen, #2 Ranked, defeating Nel Ayuso, #3 Ranked, also by the score of 3 to 2. The Finals therefore saw David Jones winning over Zhi Cheng 3 to 1, taking home

the CHAMPIONSHIP title. Nelito Ayuso also defeated Tux Vasquez to secure the 3rd spot by a score of 3 to 1. David Jones won 2010 NATIONAL WOMEN SINGLES CHAMPION, while Zhi Cheng placed 2nd, Nelito Ayuso took 3rd place and Tux Vasquez was 4th. The Finals therefore saw Harim going up against Vi c t o r, w i t h H a r i m O c h a e t a taking the championship title by defeating Victor Quan 3 to 1 in quite an exciting match by these young and upcoming players. With the level of play

having improved, the spectators were impressed and entertained by this match up. Ashar Arthurs also defeated Gian Lisbey to secure the 3rd position by a score of 3 to 1. Harim Ochaeta won cadets’ c h a m p , w h i l e Vi c t o r Q u a n placed 2nd, Ashar Arthurs took 3rd palce and Gian Lisbey - 4th. BDF still No.1 in 2010 Caribbean Cup football

The Belize Defence Force retained its No. 1 rank in the Belize Premier Football League with 24 points by their 7th win: 3-0 over the Toledo Ambassadors in Week 10 of Caribbean Motors Cup football competition at the Toledo Union field in Punta Gorda on Sunday, November 28. Trevor Lennon blasted in the first winning goal in the 30th minute of play to lead 1-0 at the half time break. In the 2nd half, Richard “Cheaty” Jimenez added a 2nd goal in the 63rd minute and Orlando “Lichy” Jimenez delivered a third goal in the 91st minute in injury time. The Ambassadors remain at No.4 spot above San Felipe who are No.5. FC Belize retained its No. 2 rank

in the Belize Premier Football League by their 7th win: 3-2 over San Felipe at the MCC grounds in Belize City. Oscar Acevedo led the San Felipe attacks with the help of Everardo Cruz and Jacobo Cawich on the wings, backed up by Erick Rodriguez, Deris Benavides, Carlos Cawich and Eduardo Morales at midfield. The FC Belize defense led by Eian Gaynair with the help of Byron Usher and Chris Gilharry held them in check and served the ball forward to their midfielders David Macaulay Jr, Leon Cadle and Delroy “Thinman” Andrews to renew the offensive. When the referee awarded the FC Belize a free kick, Nigerian import Christian Okonkwo drilled the ball to the near corner past goalkeeper Bryan

Hernandez to take a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play. FC Belize then led 2-0 when Okonkwo served to rookie Akeem Jones, who blasted the ball into the back of the net in the 38th minute to lead 2-0 at the half. In the 2nd half San Felipe came out storming and Deris drilled home their first goal in the 60th minute. FC Belize had no time to recover as Erick Rodriguez recovered the ball on the edge of the 30 yard box and smoked goalie Elden Linares with a cruise missile to tie the score at 2-2. FC Belize got the game winner in injury time, however, when Bryan Hernandez came out of his goal intent on staving off an attack by the Jerome James, and he was beaten when the

ball was crossed to Byron Usher who slapped it into the net for the 3-2 win. Griga United is stuck at No.3 in the standings after a 1-1 draw with No. 7 Hankook Verdes at the Carl Ramos Stadium on Sunday. Marlon Meza scored for Verdes in the 34th minute to lead 1-0 at the half, but Lisbey Castillo pulled one back for the Grigadang squad in the 49th minute to tie the ball game. The competition continues on Sunday with Belmopan Blaze hosting Griga United at the FIFA Goal Project field in Belmopan, on Sunday, San Felipe Barcelona will host the Belize Defence Force at the People’s Stadium, and F.C. Belize will host the Toledo Ambassadors at the MCC Grounds.

TIMES

of the PHEROMONES - How to set the night to music with science

It is humanly impossible to sustain and maintain the level of sexual interest and performance over time without a little help from science. We all know of the “little blue pill” and its role in keeping the love alive. But there is a lesser known scientific factor that has proven itself over centuries and among all of the animal kingdom for its capacity to enhance and sustain male/female attraction, interest and sexual performance. I am talking about pheromones, naturally occurring chemicals secreted by males and females are meant to act upon the olfactory receptors (our sense of smell). Research has proven the brain reacts to the detection of pheromones by going into an almost pubescent relay of sexual response messages that has the body (at any age) behaving like its gotta “get some”. Yeah, I am “dumbing down” the science a little but with war in the streets and no love anywhere, if I can bring the good news that a drop of a pheromone laced fragrance can bring back the love(r) in YOU, please let me do so. In all seriousness, pheromones have had the evolutionary task of ensuring the survival of all animal species and indeed of the planet. It is the unseen, often undetectable smell that draws males to females at the time of fecundity, and the male pheromones are believed to induce ovulation in some species. Humans have very much turned that process on its head by using synthetic hormonal birth control methods but we can still benefit from the vestigial blessing of male and female pheromones. With aging and stressful living and hormonal manipulations of our cycles, we have drastically reduced the body’s natural output of pheromones. In addition, all the disinfecting and aerosol sprays we use in our homes and offices daily, can overpower the subtle, natural smells. And women can unwittingly be throwing their partners off by using body mists and scented liners and douches. Remember, pheromones have to be detectable by the nose for them to evoke the reaction they were meant to have on our brain chemistry which will in turn influence the body’s responses. How can you get your hands on some, you might ask? Well, the ever popular “musk” fragrances of the seventies were supposed to be synthetic versions of the male pheromone. No evidence exist that it really was, but there are genuine pheromones, scientifically bio-identical to that of Mother Nature and which should be capable of doing the job. They are usually available as a perfume/cologne or as an odourless, colourless liquid you add to your favourite fragrance. They range from the expensive version favoured by Donald Trump (and you thought “The Donald” just naturally had it!), the Philosophy Line and down to the affordable “Realm” series. Victoria’s Secrets discontinued their pheromone product - women who bought it didn’t

need to buy or wear their overpriced lingerie which is what the brand is about. Therein lies the proof that it

works! Take note, though, that smokers, persons with chronic sinusitis and those

who work with petroleum based products like paints and tires have a lesser response to pheromones as their ability to detect subtle smells may have been compromised. Pheromones also work only on members of the opposite sex to the one wearing it so men will not be more attracted to a guy wearing it or women to women. And remember, we all produce it daily. So, pour two glasses of red wine for your heart’s health, each dab a drop of pheromone fragrance on your upper body pulse points, turn off the bad news box (TV) and turn on a la Roberta Flack/Maxi Priest … and set the night to music. Next Week: Winning the war against the mosquito vector without harming the environment.

Sober

Reflections All the world’s a stage…

By: Mike Rudon Jr. I got into a slight argument with a good friend last week when he attempted to convince me that Dean Oliver is a consummate parliamentarian. Taking into consideration the fact that I can’t stand the fellow and feel that he is a dismal leader and cold, unfeeling man I took immediate umbrage but then had occasion to recant my spirited opinion. See, my friend explained that he was not referring to the character of our prime minister but to his antics in parliament, where granted he is a master of the spoken word. There are very few representatives who can match the sheer genius of Dean Oliver when the cameras start rolling and the microphones are turned on in the House. Every gesture, every word, every grimace and facial contortion; every frown, every pause, every somber or jocular moment; every second of every minute which Dean Oliver spends in the House of Representatives is spent on a stage. I’m not sure if that is reason enough for condemnation of my favourite prime minister. I think that for a very long time now the sessions in the House have become the stuff of stand-up comedy shows. There was a time when I felt offended by that since I think that representing the people is serious business, in fact the most serious business and it should be carried out with sober, responsible wisdom and judgment. But with very few exceptions, our representatives seem to believe that those hours spent in the House are more about cracking the most hilarious jokes and throwing the most painful insults which can garner the most slamming on tables and jeering. It’s become all about sound bites guaranteed to impress the listening audience during the day and the viewing public glued to the nightly news. Hell, those little things called facts don’t really matter much in the House anymore and why should they since the House is a forum where anybody can basically get away with saying anything without legal repercussions. But hey, it is what it is, baby. So yeah, Dean Oliver gets a pass this time for his performance in the House. I’ll even go so far as to acknowledge that in the circus which passes for regular meetings of the House he is the head clown and a drama queen without equal. But here is where I have a problem. See, Dean Oliver doesn’t limit

his performances to the House of Representatives. If he did I could live with it. I still wouldn’t like him and I still think he is bogus but I could live with it. Nobody’s perfect. But for Dean Oliver, the whole world’s a stage. His performance in the House is no different from his performance as a leader and as the prime minister of this nation. When he is dealing with the critical issues facing the nation, he treats them the exact same way he treats anything else which comes up in the

House. He pontificates, postures and pops out the obligatory sound bites and then moves on. Who cares about the stagnant, backward-moving economy…or about all the businesses closing down or the crime which keeps escalating or tourism which is going to hell or corruption which is rampant in government? Who cares about the wreck of the city’s streets or the overgrown bush or the clogged, filthy drains or the missing money at City Hall or the dilapidated parks and playgrounds or the garbage strewn over Belize City? Who cares that Belize City is no more the vibrant hub of the nation but is now an eyesore and cesspool thanks to the UDP? Who cares that our judicial system is in a mess with every right-thinking individual convinced that the prime minister is tampering with this sacrosanct entity? Not Dean Oliver for sure. He answers any query or concern or condemnation with the usual intellectual, insubstantial bogus bullshit and moves on. That can work in the House of Representatives but it’s not working for us out here, is it? We don’t need sound bites and witty repartee. We know that Dean Oliver is an intelligent man. We know that he can

Sunday, December 5, 2010 spout rhetorical flourishes with the best of them. We know that he is a superb actor and dramatist. We know that he has a gift for fabulous turns of phrase and uses many, many words that other normal people have never heard. The crew at the Guardian gets offended every time I bash Dean Oliver a bit. They apparently have a sacred duty to propound the greatness of that near-deity and expound on his munificence at every turn. But it’s not about that, buddies. As far as I’m concerned, I’d be a lot happier with a man who didn’t talk quite so pretty but who actually worked for the people. If Dean Oliver never props his spectacles on his nose again or even casts his eyes heavenward that is fine with me. But please, Dean Oliver, could you do some work for the people? Could you help all those who are starving out here? Can you do something about crime so that our people aren’t being gunned down every single day? Could you do something about the economy so that our businesses aren’t being forced to close down? We don’t need you to talk about it or praise yourself for what you intend to do but which never gets done. Just get it done, please!

Farewell to a Friend

Carolyn Trench-Sandiford Deputy Party Leader There are times when the demands of life take you away from some of the tasks you meticulously list and set out to do, whether it being daily, weekly, monthly, or simply a singular activity. And then there are times when something occurs that reminds you in a profound and subtle way of the importance of completing that task. This played out for me today when I heard of the passing of Jose “Joe’ Erales. Yes, I was saddened by the news, perhaps even more so, as the last time we spoke, it was about the Order of Distinguished Services Plaque that is to be positioned in a place of honour at Independence Hall. Joe was a member of the Order of Distinguished Services, the highest honour to be awarded in our Party. He was very excited about the plaque, not so much because his name was already carved out on a metallic plate, but because it was to salute those persons who have displayed unselfish, consistent and loyal commitment and dedication to the Party over time, and who have earned their place as a member of the Order. For like Joe, they were the ones who kept the revolution going despite all odds, or any obstacle that was placed before them, because they believed

in the People’s United Party, and what it stands for. Joe knew them all. While I have known Joe for many years--who do not know Joe Erales, PUP loyalist, stalwart, soldier, historian, Justice of the Peace--my conversations with him were not as many as I would have wished, but when they took place, they were uplifting and enriching, besides being educational, instructive and insightful. With Joe, there was always so much to learn and so little time to spend together to do it. Consequently, much of our discussions would occur when he came by Independence Hall for

meetings, or simply for a visit to make sure his beloved Party was functioning, or during the election phases. In fact, I could almost see him in front of me as a fixture at Independence Hall during the 2009 municipal elections, providing words of support and guidance. He knew that was perhaps one of the toughest periods of my tenure as Chairman. During our encounters, he would regale me with the early days of the PUP, and the names and contributions of the people who were instrumental in forwarding the revolution, and the places he had travelled in his quest of nationalizing the philosophy of

26

the party. His anecdotal accounts and experiences were vivid and compelling. It was as if you were there. And you heard it only once, so listening was crucial. Sometimes it was about his stance besides the Rt. Hon. George Price in the fight against the British, the emotions of seeing the Belize flag being raised for the first time, or the many strategies that were used to win elections. There seem to be no end to what he had to say. Of course, the conversations always ended with reference to my father, Elkin, and his role and participation in the party. These were truly special to me, as I was a child when my father was an active member of the party, so it was always a treat to hear of his involvement, the occurrences on the campaign trails, the glory of election wins and the pain and heartbreak of losing. Joe was well researched and a library all by himself. While I know that the very nature of life will bring many other losses to our Party, I have no doubt that Joe will be one of those who will always be remembered, and whose spirit will always reside with us at Independence Hall, to urge us on in continuing the revolution to create the NEW BELIZE, which will bring to all Belizeans a better life and a just share of the national wealth.

Véase, Dean Oliver no
