Belizeans Shafted AGAIN! SUNDAY JANUARY 9, 2011

Issue No. 4726

During a time when cruise tourism stakeholders should be working and bulking up for the dreaded “dead season” Belizean investors and workers are instead fighting for their jobs and livelihoods. As one tender owner said, “If I lose my job, I lose my house and my ability to feed my family.” Late last week a secret and sinister plot that was concocted in Belize Belize 506 role Box WhatP.O. is this man's in City, the new company? the cozy confines of Tel: 671-8385, Fax: 223-3476 some meeting room in Miami came who have ties to people in very high called for to light here in Belize. For Immediate Release

PUP Demands Real Intervention from GOB The People’s United Party calls on the Government of Belize to immediately engage in constructive and ‘real’ intervention on behalf of local Belizean tender operators who are in danger of losing their sizable investments and the security offered by their critical roles in the cruise tourism industry. GOB must act decisively to ensure that the livelihoods of these local operators be protected and that Belizeans not be victimized in order to benefit a foreign interest allegedly working in collaboration with a well-placed UDP insider.

jobs and a means to earn a decent living. Information gathered by this newspaper is that a foreigner by the name of Rick O’Shea along with Belizean counterparts has made a deal with a few of the cruise lines that call on Belize to take over all tendering operations. In fact we have confirmed that two tender boats were shipped Says he knew nothing about it. from Hawaii and tender operations here in Belize. If are now at the port in Big Creek. TO HELL WITH THEM… says PM Barrow!

At a meeting held with the Leader of the Opposition Hon. John Briceño, local operators confirmed that over the past 22 years they have offered safe and reliable servicing of all cruise ships entering Belizean waters with an impeccable and unimpeachable record. Through continued investment, these local operators have managed to keep pace with the demands of the industry and their contributions to that industry cannot be overstated. It is ludicrous that these important local tourism stakeholders, who employ over a hundred Belizeans, were given just a few days notice that they had been replaced and their services would no longer be needed. It defies credibility that the government and tourism authorities claim that they were completely unaware of the impending crisis. The People’s United Party maintains its position that the roles of Belizeans in the tourism industry be protected, fostered and enhanced at all costs. The Party will follow with interest the promised negotiations between tourism stakeholders, the Prime Minister and cruise company representatives. If the outcome of those negotiations is not favourable to our established Belizean tender operators, the PUP stands ready to join forces with these tourism stakeholders to do whatever is necessary to protect local interests. Ends.

‘To Hell with Them’ was how Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow in an interview on Wednesday dismissed all those who have opposed certain aspects of several new amendments to the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act. The PM appears comfortable in his assertion that any appearance of action by his government in the fight against crime, no matter how draconian or misguided or simpleminded or ludicrous, should be lauded and embraced with almost religious

fervor. But Mr. Barrow’s comfort zone aside, there are sections of the amendments which appear to be the brainstorms of a kindergarten student with no knowledge of the law, either its application or ramifications and certainly no knowledge of basic human rights. Under the amended law, for example, if an illegal firearm or even a single round of ammunition is found on the compound of a house, business or other establishment, each (Continued on pg. 3)

Bailing Out Mr. Barrow Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow will never admit it. In fact, it is very likely that he is so mired in the comfy phobia of megalomania that he would deny it under pain of torture. But Mr. Barrow’s love of self and delusions of grandeur notwithstanding, the fact is that the current leader of the nation’s bacon was saved in the nick of time when a certain local media house chose to follow the path of mediation. Quite simply, when the prime minister chose to declare war on one media house in Belize and in extension on the freedom of the press, his ego wrote a check which his abilities and political credibility would never have been able to cash. The media house in question without a doubt had its own reasons to seek conciliation, but that is neither here nor there. What matters in this context is that Mr. Barrow was inadvertently provided with a back door through which he could scurry. He was able to save face which he would certainly have lost if the impasse had remained in effect just a little longer. In trademark fashion, the prime minister has claimed nobility and largesse as his own, mercilessly blowing his own horn for taking the high road and deigning to restore relations with said media house. Also in trademark fashion, the prime minister has continued, both in his New Year ’s address and in an appearance on Love FM’s morning show this week, to hurl derogatory comments and petty taunts at the media house. Our learned leader for a time would tear out his own tongue before admitting the truth - that he should be effusive in his gratitude to that media house for allowing him to maintain his posture on his high horse. Listening to Mr. Barrow pontificate and operate in the realm of high drama, it is an acceptable knee-jerk reaction to believe that the fellow is an intellectual giant. Listening to him quote philosophical giants at every turn and display great oratorical wizardry, it is perhaps another knee-jerk reaction to expect actions of consequence from the prime minister. But experience has also taught us that expecting great things from Dean Oliver Barrow is akin to squeezing the teats of a dead cow and expecting gushing rivulets of fresh milk. Pushing all the hype of brains and brilliance aside and looking at what is laid bare before us, it is no stretch to say that the prime minister has been weighed and measured, and has been found wanting. Is it possible that when political pundits jokingly made reference to vague similarities between Dean Barrow and US President Barack Obama, the prime minister took it seriously and as an insinuation of his own greatness? Not only is it possible, but evident. It doesn’t take an investigative genius to discover that President Obama attempted to suspend relations between his administration and the giant Fox Network. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to discover the similarities between Obama’s actions and Dean Barrow’s sanction against Channel 5. In the end Obama was forced to retreat from his position. Belizeans never got a chance to enjoy Mr. Barrow’s retreat, but there can be no doubt that he would have been forced to do so. Credible entities both local and foreign had already registered dismay at the high-handed actions of the Barrow administration, decrying what was regarded as an attack on democracy and the freedom of the press. A renowned national media organization had made its criticism clear, and even the Embassy of the United States of America felt compelled to weigh in on the matter. Public opinion was firmly on the side of freedom of the press and the absolute sanctity of an independent media protected from manipulation by and threats from the Executive. It is regrettable that the prime minister was allowed to escape the quandary of his own making. Perhaps in the dead of night he lies in bed and composes wonderful odes to that particular media house for bailing him out of an impossible situation. And well he should. But if he doesn’t, and publicly he remains as cocky and arrogant as ever, very little of serious consequence will have been gained by the impasse. The prime minister has shown that he is perfectly willing to overstep his bounds as far as the media is concerned, freedom of the press be damned. If he remains convinced of his own righteousness and might and has not learned a lesson from this episode, there are dark days ahead. Woe be to those in the media who dare to question this UDP administration and its leader. Woe be to those in the media who dare to investigate this administration and reveal truths which are distasteful and damaging. In today’s Belize, in this time, it is Mr. Barrow’s way or the highway indicated by the glowing red neon sign stating – suspension of normal relations.

Belizeans Shafted Again!!! (Continued from pg. 1)

American Pride and Bitalco. For those of you who might not know, Bitalco is owned by the new man in charge of Beltraide, Mr. Mike Singh. Is it a coincidence that the former CEO of Tourism, and now “investment dada” Mike Singh could be involved in a plot to destroy the lives of many Belizeans? First his plot to build a dock in Placencia even when the residents said no, and now this new move to control the tendering business! Mr. Singh, who has the full support of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, seems determined to control the entire tourism industry that grew by leaps and bounds during the 10 years the PUP was in government. Like one operator said “under the PUP

we never had to worry about things like this.” According to the feedback we have received, there was a meeting held late Thursday evening between stakeholders, the Minister of Tourism and the hierarchy of the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). According to reports, the Minister of Tourism and the folks at the BTB say that they did not know anything about this situation. It comes as no surprise that the people heading the tourism industry may be clueless about the situation since they seem to be in a perpetual daydream. But then again they may be playing the fool since there is a process that was implemented by the PUP administration that requires a recommendation from the BTB for any fiscal incentive granted or any

investment in the tourism industry. Cabinet should also have known about this deal since the importation of tender boats requires a special permit. To quell the brewing firestorm that is the local tender operators, the Minister of Tourism asked for time in order for a delegation led by the Prime Minister to visit Miami to discuss the issue with the cruise lines. Image, our Prime Minister has to go and do the job of his incompetent Minister of Tourism. That explains why the Prime Minister suffers from a chronic back pain. He has to constantly be carrying the bunch of dodo-birds that sit around the Cabinet table. It will be interesting to see what they bring back from Miami but if it is not to the liking of the tender operators, there will be hell to pay in Belize City. Our guess is that the deal

will be shelved for the high season and then repackage in some form or the other. Only time will tell! Everyone who has some knowledge of the cruise business here in Belize knows that tendering is the lifeblood of the industry due to the fact that there is no docking facility. Today, there are about 12 major local tender operators employing over 100 Belizeans who have helped to build the cruise industry to what it is today. It is estimated that these Belizeans have over 20 million dollars invested in boats and other equipment. It would be a travesty if we as Belizeans were to stand around and allow the greed of a few to snatch away the livelihood of so many Belizeans. It is time…indeed it is past time that we stand up against all the injustices taking place in our country.

gun, which is a device used to send off distress signals at sea, in his possession. So a fisherman or sailor who is found to have a flare gun can now be locked up for the device, simply because the law makes it illegal. After an especially violent 2010 in which the only crime-fighting initiative came in the form of a song, the Barrow administration has come under focused and widespread condemnation for its inaction. Speculation is that the amendments have thus been engineered by the Prime Minister to give the impression of bold and decisive action when

nothing could be further from the truth. The creation of much glitter and glamour to disguise the lack of substance is par for the course of this UDP government, as is Mr. Barrow’s careless derision of all those who dare to disagree with him – ‘criticism that we get for it we will have to accept... whatever criticisms they want to make, that’s fine.’ Belize ended the New Year with an appalling and horrifying 132 murders, for a rate of 40 murders per 100,000. Our once peaceful nation has now earned its place on the distinctive but hardly distinguished top ten listing of countries with the highest murder rates. Yet in his New Year’s Message,

the Prime Minister quite remarkably and with absolutely no justification or rationalization patted himself on the back for what he claimed was a slowdown in crime thanks to the resolve of the UDP administration. The only resolve Belizeans have seen from this UDP is the resolve to ignore, disregard and downplay the crisis which faces us. A set of draconian and completely ridiculous amendments which will do absolutely nothing to curtail violent crime is now the second item on the Barrow list of crime fighting initiatives in 2010 – the first being a song called ‘I Am Belize’ which is the only thing which has come out of Operation Restore Belize.

associates himself as being by saying: “"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites…for you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!" Matthew 23:23-24 Jesus is repeatedly quoted as

saying - “do not be like the scribes and Pharisees”, yet this is who Barrow patterns his thoughts from? In fact, Jesus’ entire campaign against the Pharisees' example is that self -righteousness is not righteousness, and that God's true people are to live according to all of God's Word, not just certain parts that are most convenient or to one's own liking. Seems familiar? Here at The Belize Times we go on record to say that for the first time we agree with Barrow. You “are” a

Pharisee, boss. The wicked ways befall them. Barrow would be advised to read his Bible and change his heroes. Matthew Chapter 23 verse 27 o f t h e N e w L i v i n g Tr a n s l a t i o n Bible puts the writing on the wall best: "What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs--beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people's bones and all sorts of impurity.”

TO HELL WITH THEM…

(Continued from pg. 1) and every person (minors included) on those premises will be taken off and locked up. The detainees will be unable to access any kind of bail at the Magistrate's Courts and will be required to hire the services of an attorney to apply to the Supreme Court to apply for bail. The timeframe for that process has now been doubled to 14 days, which means one may now be remanded to the Hattieville Prison for up to 14 days before an application for bail is heard. Another ridiculous amendment to the law prohibits anyone, fishermen and seafarers included, from having a flare

Barrow the Pharisee

In answer to a question about a very popular billboard depicting the Royal Barrow family who continue to watch the people of Belize suffer, King Barrow took off his crown, exposed his naked baldness and said “…. I don't want to sound like a Pharisee but we are different, we don't sink that low." Did you hear that? That is what it is. Barrow in his own self absorbed bubble has finally done a better job than Hubert “Crazy Glue” Elrington in describing himself. The Belize Times received an email from a church leader that asked us to “take a double take at how the Prime Minister described himself.” The Elringtons have described the Barrows as “all glitter and no substance” but this takes the fruit cake. No matter how multi-syllabic and assured Barrow’s tone is, we are informed that being a Pharisee is not a good thing to which to be compared. What Barrow equated himself to was in essence the “antichrist” another church leader told us. Those were the people who basically murdered Jesus Christ. The name Pharisee in its Hebrew form means separatists, or the separated ones. The teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees were divisive, separating Jews from Gentiles, clean from unclean, law from grace, people from God. According to the Mark’s Gospel, these were the people who allowed temple to be turned “into a den of thieves.” Ironically, another religious leader reminded us that in Matthew 23:13, the Pharisees are equated and classed with hypocrites, “But woe to you, scribes [lawyers of that era] and Pharisees, hypocrites!” He reminded that further down Jesus scolds these people that Barrow

Dear Minister Vega, I w r i t e t o y o u o n b e h a l f o f M r. G e l a c i o T h o m a s Quewell. Mr. Quewell has been occupying a parcel of 80 acres of land for the past 35 years in the Santa Familia a r e a w h i c h b o r d e r s t h e Vi l l a g e o f B i l l y W h i t e . T h i s land he farmed with his father Francisco Quewell who died some 12 years ago and which he also farmed for an additional 30 years. Gelacio has a standing lease of 40 acres. However, his survey done 25 years ago by one Mr. Johnston shows a parcel of 80 acres. He did not obtain a lease for the previously un-leased 40 acres until October of 2007. However, he had occupied by clearing, working and establishing his farm on the 40 acres. Apparently, the surveyor for the leased 40 acres included the second forty acres in the plan and so Mr. Quewell while occupying 80 acres was paying for only 40 acres, albeit the fact that he was using the entire 80 acres. On October 14, 2010, the Hon. Elvin Penner wrote you a letter which was signed by both Hon. Penner and Mr. Gelacio Thomas Quewell. In this letter, it stated that Mr. Quewell was giving up the rights of 20 acres of the 40 for which Hon. Penner states Mr. Quewell never had a valid lease. This land is according to Hon. Penner to be used for village expansion. He further states that Mr. Quewell is surrendering any claim to the 20 acres. Firstly, Mr. Quewell is not able to read or write and thus this letter clearly illustrates acquisition by deception on the part of Hon. Penner. In my view, no sane person would give up compensation for hard work invested for more than 35 years, especially Mr. Quewell who is the father of 11 children and whose wife is frail and recovering from Cancer. Secondly, the land in question is in the Santa Familia territory and not in Billy White village even though it borders with Billy White. Thirdly, there are other vacant lands in Billy White proper that can be acquired by government for public purposes. Fourthly, if land is to be acquired within the Santa Familia boundaries then these lands should be designated as Santa Familia lots and not Billy White lots. If the acquisition is indeed for Billy White then legal measures must be taken to first acquire the Santa Familia lands, redo the boundaries and then assign the lands to Billy White. Fifth, there are unused and abandoned lands immediately adjacent to the Quewell lands which on the contrary to Quewell’s lands which are productive are being used for speculation purposes by foreign and Belizean owners. Sixth, before acquiring lands in Santa Familia boundaries for Billy White, unused lands in Billy White should first be acquired for public purposes and these lands are indeed available within the confines of Billy White village. Lastly, let me reiterate that Mr. Quewell received a lease for the said forty acres in question (CYO 483/2007) from the lands department on October 26, 2007. If this lease is not considered valid for whatever reasons, then Mr. Quewell is indeed entitled to such lands as you know, by reason of “Squatters rights’ (40+ years) as stipulated by Belize law for illegal occupation of 12 + years without ever being asked to do otherwise by the competent authorities. Hon. Minister, I trust that in your good and learned judgment, the un r e f e r e n c e d l e t t e r f r o m M r. P e n n e r i s disregarded and that Mr. Quewell retains his lands which he is entitled to as a born Belizean Mayan descendant and productive citizen of this country of ours. In addition, this type of deception and coercion is in violation of a citizen’s rights, is a violation of human rights and is ‘unbecoming’ of a Minister of Government. It might even be punishable in Court! Respectfully, Orlando Habet Chairman Western Caucus People’s United Party

The great pretender… Baldy must be so proud…there’s even a song written about him…lol! Check out this latest tourism mess where local tender operators are being given the shaft. After investing millions of dollars they were told this week that their services would no longer be needed, effective almost immediately. Apparently our highlevel, high-profile, high-dollar tourism team at the BTB, led by the ‘barefoot bobo’ and no less than the great

pretender, is now trying to convince local tender operators that they had no idea what was going on. Yeah right! After an outcry which promised to get out of control, the tired team is claiming that they will personally head to Miami to meet with representatives of the major cruise lines (yay, Kim, another shopping trip). How much do you wanna bet that the great pretender and crew will come traipsing back to Belize with their best dejected faces in full effect to inform local tender operators that they tried their best but it is out of their hands? I sure hope Mr. Barrow can handle the fallout from that one because it ain’t going to be pretty…If Da Noh Soh! Not that Singh guy again… And while he’s preparing for that war, maybe baldy could take some time to clear up this little rumour circulating that one of his favourite people recently of tourism infamy is up to his neck in this brand-spanking new tender company set to take the bread out of the mouths of our locals. Word from a very credible source is that the former CEO of the Ministry of Tourism is the local beef behind

true this is a banquet and sumptuous feast of epic proportions…If Da Noh Soh! In poor taste…lol! I was driving behind baldy and the first lady second wife on Coney Drive a few days ago when they passed that infamous billboard depicting the

royal family which some anonymous but visionary soul has created. Well thank God for the suspension on that quarter million dollar luxury SUV we taxpayers bought for baldy, or when he sped up and jumped the speedbump his bad back would surely have been thrown out of whack. Wrinkling his patrician nose which certainly did nothing to improve his looks (actually nothing could do that), the fellow snorted and sniffed prettily before stating that he feels that the ad is in poor taste. And then he did it… with no trace of shame baldy said – ‘You can't get less royal than I at least in terms of behavior, in terms of interaction, in terms of my grounding with the masses.’ I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I want me some of those pain meds baldy is quaffing, cause that is some good shit…If Da Noh Soh! Just a lil slip… But like everything else there is good and bad. Those pain meds are great for hallucinations and creating a false sense of reality but even baldy’s big brilliant brain gets muddled from time to time. During his concert/ glamour fest yesterday…oops, sorry, I meant media tour, baldy was quizzed

he revealed that GOB’s take on fuel right now is actually $3.34 on every gallon of regular fuel. He didn’t get into government’s take on every gallon of premium fuel, but we can all safely assume that it is even higher. Oops! Hmmm…maybe the $1 flat tax was just a figment of the imagination caused by those absolutely wonderful pain meds… If Da Noh Soh! What a mess… Tensions are running high in Corozal right now and hormones are completely out of control as the electrician turned ministerial moron has lifted his skirts high and is preparing to stomp all over the mayor turned casino queen with those fancy cowboy boots. The first round of the catfight was on Tuesday when queenie put up tents on the convention site and the ministerial moron drove

past. Within hours orders had been handed out by Naco to take down the tents, but when he checked to make sure that the tents had gone down, queenie was on the site and told him to come take down the tents himself if he thought he was man enough. As the story goes, guns were drawn and nasty words were thrown but in the end none of the ‘men’ could gather up enough cojones to get it on…If Da Noh Soh! Nasty, nasty… And talk about lifting up his skirts…that damned Naco is spreading some nasty rumours about his former colleague turned bitter enemy. In a flyer being circulated by Naco’s crew, the mayor turned casino queen is bitchslapped by some serious allegations and insinuations. According to the flyer, queenie is misappropriating funds from the Town Council for his own purposes (read to finance his

this new tender company. Word also is that one of his good friends who seems to have problems with unregistered boats breaking down near the airstrip will be running the company for him. Not enough… well this former tourism CEO is now sitting pretty at Beltraide, so he is in a position to approve a development concession and duty free status to this new company - talk about tangled but very lucrative webs. You do the math. Damn, I’ve heard about Singh-ing for your supper, but if the rumours are

mercilessly about the price of fuel which has gone through the roof. Forgetting that he had made and broken the exact same commitment back in 2008, the great pretender stated with all conviction that he would likely revisit the government’s $1 flat tax on fuel in his next budget. After this pronouncement we were all carried away on the tides of euphoria for like, say, two seconds before we realized that we had heard this all before. And then to make it even worse, baldy had one of those medication-induced fugues where one moment he was talking about revisiting the $1 flat tax on fuel and then in the next moment

campaign). Not only that, but the flyer makes a very pointed allegation that the Mayor’s vehicle is very possibly being used to traffic drugs, especially since one of his drivers was reportedly busted with a lot of cannabis. Damn, this is worse than those female mudwrestling matches at the local men’s club…If Da Noh Soh! Crossing the line… A couple slaps here and there, some pulling of the hair and tearing at clothes is fine by me, but I will absolutely not allow my column to be used to flaunt the sexual preferences of my UDP friends (maybe I should watch how I call them friends LOL). Just the other day my anonymous source who I will absolutely not reveal is the Mayor was claiming that Naco is a little or a whole lot on the other side, if you know what I mean. That confidential source even pointed to one male employee at the Corozal Hospital who had received an immediate promotion the day after giving Naco what must have been an exceptional back rub behind closed doors. Damn! Yuck. And now another source who is absolutely not Naco (wink wink) wants to use me to throw pink stones at the mayor. According to what this secret informant is saying, the mayor is desperate to win the convention because if he doesn’t his fiancé has threatened to leave

him. Okay, nothing wrong with that, but then my source who also does electrician work on the side claims that if the fiancé walks out the door, Oscar will be more than happy. So I said, okay, also nothing wrong with that either…so the fiancé has another interest on the side. But I was told nope, Oscar isn’t interested in the fiancé…(wink wink yuck). Okay that’s it…no more dealing with you guys who wanna be gals from Corozal LOL…If Da Noh Soh!

It’s been days since the Kendall Bridge was washed away. How much longer must we wait for a new bridge, Mr. Prime Minister?

Belizean Tender Operators have played a vital role in Belize's Tourism Industry since 1988. When cruise tourism boomed from 1998 to 2008, Belizean Tender Operators made the necessary investments and contined to provide quality reliable service.

Belizeans shafted again… Our tourism gurus in authority would have us believe that there has been this dramatic facelift in the Belize Tourism Board; a new vision; a new agenda of development; new purpose and new life. It seemed like a good idea, especially since under the UDP tourism figures had showed repeated decline. But something’s very, very wrong. According to what is being reported, owners of large tenders who service cruise ships have been informed just this week that effective Thursday their services will no longer be required. They have apparently been told that a foreign interest working in collaboration with a very highly placed local interest will take over tendering services. The thing is that the tourism season is just at its high points and these local tender operators have invested millions of dollars in order to provide adequate service, only to be told that in a couple days they can take a long walk off a short pier, so to speak. Somehow there is this very credible perception that Belizeans who have sacrificed so much for this once vibrant industry are being shafted in favor of well-connected persons in the UDP and foreign interests. The Belize Tourism Board should not be allowed to dodge this one…they are supposed to be safeguarding the interests of our local stakeholders, ensuring that our people are able to get their fair share of this tourism pie. Under this UDP, Belizeans always seem to come out last.

Revisiting Again… In an appearance on Love FM’s morning show on Wednesday current leader of the nation Dean Oliver Barrow made a firm commitment to revisit the fuel situation in April 2011 with a view to reducing government’s take so that taxpayers do not bear the brunt of rising acquisition costs. Currently the cost of fuel at the pumps has soared way past $10 per gallon, the highest it has ever been. In the normal course of things that would be extremely welcome news as high fuel prices results in the rising cost of goods across the board. But coming from this prime minister and this government, that commitment is worth less than a farthing. In his 2008 budget presentation, Mr. Barrow made a similar commitment to revisit the fuel situation with a view to reducing government’s take if the cost per gallon at the pumps rose to more than $7. Back then when the price rose past $8 and the prime minister was questioned as to his commitment, he adroitly sidestepped and dodged the issue by claiming that he had promised only to revisit as opposed to actually doing anything. Trend vs. Blip… Mr. Barrow also said that he is looking at the fuel situation closely because it is very complicated and will require all his genius and brilliance to resolve. He won’t do anything yet, he said, till he has had the time to analyze the issue and ensure that the increase in fuel cost is ‘a trend as opposed to just a blip.’ Yes, he really did say that. Apparently he is not convinced that fuel rising from $5 per gallon to over $10 per gallon under the UDP is a trend. Yes, the fact is that pump prices have risen steadily and markedly over the past two and a half years, but that could still be just a blip, says Mr. Barrow. Judging from past experience, it is doubtful whether the prime minister’s careful analysis of the situation will be complete before the end of his term… but then he’s not serious about reducing the burden on taxpayers anyway, so it really doesn’t matter. The PM can be assured of one fact – his term as leader of this nation is certainly a blip with no danger of becoming a trend. Well said… A caller to Love FM shortly before the prime minister’s scheduled appearance on Wednesday said it best. He implored the hosts of the

7

show to ask Dean Oliver the hard questions as opposed to powdering and pampering the current leader as is so often the case. That caller referred to the prime minister’s New Year’s message, stating that Mr. Barrow spoke about many, many good things happening and great times ahead. The picture painted by Mr. Barrow, he said, was a far cry from the reality being faced by Belizeans each and everyday. That is not a view held simply by that caller, as Mr. Barrow’s message to end 2010 has received very critical reviews. When the prime minister spoke about great things in the year past and greater things to come, nobody can relate to what he is saying. Even common UDP supporters (as opposed to highly placed UDP cronies with perks) know that this is the worst things have ever been in Belize. I’m not sure which country Mr. Barrow was referring to in his message, but it surely was not the Belize we have come to know under this UDP administration. Maybe the prime minister’s address wasn’t really intended for the wider public, but was aimed at members of his family, UDP ministers and their families and highly placed cronies only. That must be it. Funny man…

I am convinced that all that book knowledge is wasted on the prime minister. Even with the surfeit of brains and brilliance of which he is only too happy to boast, Dean Oliver is the poster child for common sense not being very common. Not only that, but the fellow is damned disingenuous. At the last sitting of the House of Representatives, he was being his usual self, blasting the previous administration for what he called fake growth. According to Mr. Barrow, while there was massive development under the PUP it doesn’t count because they had to borrow to stimulate the economy. So it wasn’t like the economy was really being stimulated, Dean Oliver claimed. And then, without losing a moment’s poise, the current leader of the nation started boasting about all this economic growth and development which he says will be coming our way in 2011, and he reels off a list of loans which his administration has secured, amounting to almost $300million dollars. In his appearance on Love FM, Mr. Barrow said that no country can survive without borrowing. So according to the prime minister, when the PUP borrowed and pumped money into the economy it was false growth and development, but when the UDP does the exact same thing, it is real growth and development. And we’re supposed to swallow that one just because Dean Oliver Barrow says it is so. Top 10…

At the end of 2010, there were a recorded 132 murders in our small nation. That translates to something like 40 murders for every 100,000 which means that our once peaceful jewel can now boast one of the highest murder rates in the world…in the whole world. In fact, Belize now has the distinction of being in the Top 10 for murders in the world. Who would ever have believed it? This is a crisis by any definition of the word. Belizeans are living in fear, real fear – terrified of being on our streets and afraid of being in their own homes. It is like open season on law-abiding citizens. Criminals have been allowed to prey on us with impunity. While that in and of itself is appalling, what is much, much worse is that the prime minister seems either blissfully unaware of the crisis or eminently able to ignore the crisis. In fact, the prime minister chose no less than his national New Year’s message to pat himself on the back for the crime situation. Somehow he has taken credit for the misery visited on Belizeans. The only bits of affirmative action out of this prime minister and this government are a great song and a new public relations officer. That is it.

A Murderous Year’s End - No Christ in Christmas

There were two murders on Christmas Eve in what was known as ‘Rambo Town’ two decades ago. One occurred in San Jose Village and claimed the life of an elderly man and the other happened in Carmelita Village and claimed the life of a father of two small children. They happened on the northern and southern approaches of the town itself and dealt a devastating blow to the families and friends of those who died. In the first case, trouble went looking for Reginald Rowley, a 72-year-old snow-cones and fruit vendor, all the way inside his newly constructed home and his alleged killer was someone he knew well -

his own stepson, Amir Dominguez, 21, a youth described as an outlaw when he is intoxicated or worse. That proved true between three and four on Christmas Eve evening when Dominguez, driven irate by Rowley who chided him on domestic matters, sought to put an end to the scolding and Rowley's life. How it came was one of the cruelest ways that one can meet death - beaten almost into a pulp with a crowbar and a table stool inside Rowley's house. What was also surprising was that no one heard the beating that Dominguez was administering to his "old man". Rowley was discovered by his wife, Mirsa, around five that same evening, barely alive. They say that Bul and O'Campo got engaged in a heated argument sometime after eight on Christmas Eve night and that it turned into a brief fist exchange. It evolved into an ugly bloodbath when Bul, feeling aggrieved, left the scene, only to return minutes later on a bicycle and armed with a machete. Two More Murders

Ontario Village at mile 55 on the Western Highway has been known in the recent past for outbreaks in gang activity and mayhem. One of those incidents caused Justin Jones, 22 to relocate to Belize City in order to avoid further trouble with fellow village youths. That move, however, only spared his life for a while because Jones, a father of a 14 month old child, was killed last week when he returned to Ontario for a family wake. The incident happened around midnight on December 23, just as Jones, his girlfriend, Lisa Sutherland, and her mother, Joan Sutherland, were all getting ready to return to Belize City after the event. Outside, however, tempers were brewing when one of Jones' nemeses, Godwin Santos, a 39 year old labourer from the village, accosted him, perhaps

Wish-washy, namby-pamby ‘poco-tiempo’ GOB…

By: Mike Rudon Jr. When I checked my email this morning there was a release from the ministry of police and public safety informing me that they had hired a new public relations officer. Immediately I was overwhelmed by a warm sensation of well-being. I was immediately uplifted, comforted and invigorated by this bit of knowledge. Gosh, I thought, finally we have been rescued from this dreadful scourge of crime; finally we can walk our streets in safety and peace; we will no longer be prisoners in our own homes, FINALLY; finally we will cease to be victims of the cold, callous, vicious criminals who prey on us and spill our blood with apparent impunity; finally we can stop grieving for our children and loved ones whose lives are wrested away each and every day. Glory hallelujah, praise the Lord, deliverance has been brought onto us by our saviors at the ministry of police and public safety. They have hired a public relations officer. There’s this song which keeps playing over and over in my head. It’s an oldie but a goodie from this weird looking guy called Meatloaf. In it he claims most emphatically that he will do anything for love, but he won’t do THAT. Nobody knows what exactly he would do for love because apart from the promise there are no specifics. And nobody knows what is this monumental, prohibited ‘that’ which he won’t do. Again, there are no specifics. It’s like Mr. Barrow and the UDP, who promised that they would do anything for us. Three years after, we’re still left with only the promise; we’re still imagining the possibilities of them doing anything for us. And as for that elusive ‘that’ which they would not do? Well, all we know for sure is that the UDP absolutely will not be a competent, efficient, responsible, honest and transparent government. ‘That’ they will not do. The other day I was listening to a news story about crime in Barbados. In 2009 the small island nation had something like 79 murders. In 2010 the murder statistic rose to 84. It was big news for the country, with a massive outcry by the populace for dramatic resolve and action while the government scurried to find answers. Here in Belize we have roughly the same population as Barbados. Last year 2009 we broke the record for murders with an appalling 103 for the year. This year we left that figure in the dirt and rose to new heights, or sunk to new depths, with 132 murders. Cause for alarm? Sure, in the normal scheme of things! And it was important enough that the prime minister made mention of it in his New Year’s message to the nation. Only he didn’t make mention of any new initiatives, any crack-downs, any visionary plans, nothing. There was no acknowledgement of a crisis; no explanation of or resolve to address the problem; no commitment to the nation to fight crime tooth and nail in the New Year. Nope! In a strange turn of events, Dean Oliver patted himself on the back over the crime situation, claiming - ‘crime appears, albeit slowly, to be giving way to our now resumed, now unstoppable march of progress.’ Okay then buddy. Like it did me, I am reasonably sure that caught a lot of people by surprise. See, what we’re stuck with is a wishy-washy, namby-pamby, poco-

tiempo government – the genuine article. The biggest mistake is to expect anything real from Mr. Barrow and crew. If you’re looking for bold vision or innovation, you’re looking

in all the wrong places. And this police thing is just one glaring example in a string of glaring examples. Long after first minister of police Carlos Perdomo had proven

to everyone’s satisfaction and dismay that he was a dud of the first order and a hopeless case, the prime minister finally acted. He replaced a dud with another dud, a figurehead, a monumental and very expensive waste of time. Under spent shell #2, Doug Singh, crime spiraled completely out of control to where it is now. We got Operation Jaguar which did nothing at all. We got Operation Restore Belize which gave us a nifty song. But that’s it…end of story. And now as we enter 2011, Mr. Barrow and the UDP have done it again. They have offered us their answer to the unspeakable violence which holds us in chains. After much thought and brainstorming we have been gifted with their idea of a solution to the record-breaking murders, and that bold innovation is (insert drum-roll, ticking clock and anxious gasp from the audience)…a new public relations officer.

rod says: January 5, 2011 at 7:18 am not only is this a farse we also need to get rid of this pm once and for all he is a desgrace to the nation and the belizean people out barrow outttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ttttttttttttt. Hardworking Belizean says: January 5, 2011 at 9:06 am Most definitely he should keep his word of bringing down fuel prices!!! The poor Belizean people are already going through rough economical times to be burdened now with a hike in the price of fuel. Barrow & his administration & cronies don’t feel the pinch because all they do is sign vouchers at the gas stations which is then billed to GOB and at the end of the day who pays it? Us the poor tax payers who apart from our already sky high fnancial expenses have to additionally curtail their fuel expenses!!! As Edward said ” why do we remain silent?” Are we going to continue enduring everything and anything being pushed down our throat? What happened with the freedom of speech and democratic rights we always use to brag so much of? Are we all so extremely afraid of this PM & his administration? Food for thought. O. Walk resident says: January 5, 2011 at 9:34 am The present fuel prices are just outrageous, there is no way that government can justify them. If you check the internet, the prices would be arround $3.00 U.S and the price for crude oil at around $90.00 U.S. DOLLARS. When the cost of crude reached $147.00 dollars before the world recesion, the cost of gas was around $10.00 and people were crying like crazy; what about now?? Check the difference in crude oil prices, there is no way that the present gas prices can be justified, period! Proud Belizean says: January 5, 2011 at 11:09 am “Promise is a comfort to a fool”. These politicians always take the people for “fools”. PM promised that if the price of gas goes beyond 8/gallon, he would remove the dollar tax. It is in black and white so I believe that he should be held accountable and if he fails to do so, the people should demonstrate and demand that he drops the tax on fuel. Kaylyn says: January 5, 2011 at 2:41 pm When the PM speaks it reminds me of the comic strip/cartoon character Charlie Brown…can’t do or say anything right. His words start sounding like mombo jombo after a while…”baffle you with brilliance and dazzle you with bs” common sens says: January 5, 2011 at 2:23 pm With the quantitative easing techniques currently employed by the USA – the price of oil will continually rise. US dollar is slowly depreciating, making oil more expensive on any country that is tied to the US dollar. We are tied to the US dollar, as such, oil prices will continue to rise. Mr. PM – lets provide some relief. Remove taxation from fuel imported. Go through your budget and account for every cent that your government is spending. Look at the wages you are paying your Ministers, representatives and yourself first. The Government is representing me, and I certainly don’t see why you should be paying yourselves more than $200Bze a week. We are a small country – what is wrong with a small Government? Take a look at OUR oil fields that are currently producing or scheduled to produce in the near future. Learn how Chavez managed to control his countries oil sources. Just a few ideas!

Mexican drug cartel Woman arrested for Guatemalan bus bombing says it extends truce

A female gang member was arrested in connection with the bombing of a bus in Guatemala City that left seven dead, authorities said. Sonia Veliz, a member of the Mara 18 street gang, was identified through a composite sketch police made based on statements from a witness, said Ronnie Lopez, prosecutor for organized crime. Witnesses had said that a woman had boarded the bus, left

her bag on the luggage rack, and exited before the blast on Monday. Lopez said Tuesday that Veliz was the main perpetrator of the bombing. He said the attack was carried out at the request of the leader of the gang, who ordered the act from prison. The gang controls the area where the bus operated, and allegedly attacked it because the bus drivers refused to pay extortion money to the gang.

Teachers protested for a second day Tuesday and bus drivers staged a partial strike as the general Bolivian population expressed indignation at a sharp spike in gasoline and diesel prices. Over the weekend, the government announced the end to gas subsidies that kept the price at Bolivian pumps artificially low. The end of the subsidies resulted in an increase of up to 73% for gas and more than 80% for diesel. Regular gas, which cost the equivalent of $1.97 per gallon, now costs $3.42 per gallon. Diesel prices rose from about $1.90 per gallon to $3.61 per gallon. The government said the move would save the country $380 million and was necessary to make pump prices comparable to neighboring countries, thus putting an end to fuel smuggling out of the country. "That money belonging to Bolivians that was exiting abroad without benefiting the country, that's why the government has decided to use those resources to implement social development programs that truly help the development of the nation," said Ivan Canales, a government spokesman. Canales accused right-wing interests of trying to foment unrest to get the subsidies reinstated, but the negative reaction came from all socio-economic levels. "I wish I could go to the market with one of the government ministers so that they could see how much we can buy with the money we make," said Mary Ortuno. Another La Paz resident, Nestor Yujra, said, "This is completely sad.

Now, we don't know how we are going to handle the situation." The local media have dubbed the new policy as the "Gasolinazo," or "The Big Gasoline Hit." In some instances, protesters clashed with police in riot gear, though there were no reports of major injuries. A strike by bus and other public transportation drivers went as planned, though some remained on the job. Those who remained, however, raised their prices, too. "We regret that some drivers have increased their (prices) by as much as 100%," Canales said. The government will not back down from its decision, he said. "We subsidize the rich, and we subsidize the poor. We subsidize those who don't need it, and we subsidize those who do. That is not right," Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said. The subsidy made for bad economics, he said. Bolivia's confederation of drivers was to meet Tuesday to discuss new strategies to protest the price increase, as well as how they would handle how much they will charge for tickets. President Evo Morales, who was out of the country on an official visit to Venezuela when the end of the subsidies was announced, has been in communication with various sectors of Bolivian society and will address the nation on the issue Wednesday, the state-run ABI news agency reported. The increase was the largest for gas prices in 30 years.

Bolivians protest fuel price increases

A statement purportedly released by a violent Mexican drug cartel promises a one-month extension to a truce it called for in December. The Familia Michoacana cartel, which takes its name from the central-coastal state where it operates, signed the statement, which was circulated by e-mail on Sunday and published in its entirety on a blog dedicated to covering the drug wars. Mexican authorities were not immediately available to comment on the authenticity of the communication. The cartel accuses the federal police of committing abuses in the region and blaming them. The authorities have attacked the cartel and any person caught in its path, be it civilians, women or children, the cartel alleges. It also wishes the residents of Michoacan a happy new year. The Familia Michoacana "separates itself from any criminal act that occurred in the month of December 2010 that the federal authorities want to make us responsible for," the statement says. A similar letter circulated last

month offered a truce for the month of December, though that didn't mean the the month was without violence. The Mexican government continued its operations against the cartel, killing one of its leaders, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, after two days of armed confrontations. Five federal police officers and three civilians, including two minors, were killed in the operation, a national security spokesman said at the time. Three members of La Familia Michoacana were killed and three others captured. Authorities described a scene of heavy gunfire where cartel members set trucks and buses on fire on highways to block police from arriving. Another cartel leader, Francisco Lopez Villanueva, alias "El Bigote," was captured at the end of the month. The truce will be extended another month "to continue demonstrating to the authorities, federal government and above all the Michoacan residents that the Familia Michoacana is not guilty of all of the criminal acts that the authorities and federal government make public through the media," the statement says.

Cuba is releasing two more political prisoners who will be sent straight from prison to exile in Spain, the Roman Catholic Church said Friday. The two men are not part of a group of 52 prisoners President Raul Castro pledged to free in an agreement brokered last July. Eleven of those dissidents, jailed during a government crackdown in March 2003, remain behind bars. Miguel Angel Vidal Guadarrama and Hector Larroque Rego will be released soon, said a statement from the

archbishop of Havana. Both men's names appear on an online list of prisoners complied by the independent Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation based in Havana. Vidal was sentenced to 15 years in jail on charges of terrorism and Larroque received 22 years for burglary, illegal possession of weapons, piracy and attempted illegal exit from Cuba, according to the commission. The Cuban government has often labeled jailed dissidents as "mercenaries" in the pay of foreign governments including the United States. But Human Rights Watch has documented a systemic pattern of repression in Cuba and said in a report that the communist nation's "laws empower the state to criminalize virtually all forms of dissent."

Ready now? Christmas In the Kingdom A few days ago practically the whole world celebrated Christmas! It is a special time for many; a time to rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ, a time for making a little extra business, a time for drinking and merry-making. We decorated our houses, repainted, re-varnished, laid down new floor coverings, purchased soft drinks, and prepared the turkey and ham, while someone wrapped special gifts and toys. Little children were on their best behavior hoping that they would not make the “Naughty List”! We saw beautiful lights and scenes being set up and it was fun just to drive around and soak in the beautiful, extravagant decorations. The part of the celebration that I love the most is the togetherness of families! We laughed and talked together, ate together and enjoyed the holiday given by the school and work places. Of course as a child I looked forward to the opening of my gift! This Christmas made me remember one in particular. We didn’t have plenty but were well taken care of by our parents. One sister would wrap up old, torn books in beautiful Christmas gift paper, and we would end up disappointed on Christmas day as we open that particular gift with great anticipation, only to find a book that was “older than our uncles” in there. I remember getting a “b.b. gun” from Sikafi and while target practicing, my little brother chose to run across the area where my target stood. He was hit somewhere around the upper part of the leg and in pain for a couple of days! My aim today is to clarify how important Christmas is to the Kingdom of God! I must distinguish immediately that there are two Christmases. One is the true birth of Christ that occurred over two thousand years ago, and the other is a celebration of this birth designed for partying, making money, and the gratifying of the human desires! If a child knows more about Santa Clause than Jesus Christ, then we have missed the ball big time with this celebration! To properly celebrate this event we must look deeper than a birthday party. Most people love celebrating a little baby rather than a King. It is very hard to look at Jesus as a king that makes demands on our very lifestyle! If he is a baby we can put him in our yards on the 25th of December, and on our roof tops with lights all around him, throw parties on his behalf, doing things in those parties that he has spoken of saying we should not do. See, a baby makes no demands. He goes where ever you want him to and allows you to do whatever you like, whenever you like. He may require a little milk and diaper change now and again but not really much more than that. Well I’m sorry to say that Jesus no longer wears pampers! Indirectly, by celebrating his birth we are admitting His existence. Jesus grew up to be a man 33 years of age. He is both God and man (God in the Flesh) 100 percent God 100 percent man. It is called the mystery of the Godhead! To prove to you that he is a King and not just a man even from birth, lets look at Matthew chapter 2. In verse two he is called king of the Jews; verse 8, king Herod, the most powerful man (king) on the earth at that time, wanted to worship baby Jesus. To worship, by the way, means to kiss towards, like a dog licking his master’s hand, to crouch, prostrate oneself in homage; in verse 11 three big grown men fell down and worshipped him giving him gifts!!!!!; and finally in verse 16 king Herod having the same problem we are having now ordered for all young male children two years and under to be killed. See he had no problem with a baby, but a baby that was King of the Jews and all mankind offered Herod great competition and insecurity. It is a very sad thing when we choose to celebrate the birth of Jesus but refuse to have Jesus the King of kings as the Lord of our lives. His birth was to redeem mankind from destruction as we all know from the popular verse (John 3:16).“ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” So from this year forward, as you enjoyably celebrate the birth of Christ, the most Important question is why, and for what purpose, was he born in the first place! As we find the right answer to this question, we can then begin to make the right choices in our lives and live prosperously with abundance of life!!! Let us have a great year!

By: Mike Rudon Jr. Being that this is the first issue of the Belize Times for 2011, I take this opportunity to wish all Belizeans the very best that this new year can bring. I’ll content myself with sending wishes for peace and love and some measure of happiness, since I sure as hell can’t wish for prosperity under this myopic bunch of morons. By decree of the king, all prosperity has been declared off-limits to common Belizeans like you and me. Just like the deer in Nottingham Forest, the royal family has dibs on any and all prosperity which rears its head. I will be the first to admit that I suck at resolutions. I’m still fat, I still love to sip that intoxicating brew and I have yet to turn down a lap dance offered in one of those well-loved dens of iniquity and ill-repute…and that’s all I need to say about that. So when I was filled with the ‘spirits’ of the Christmas season and resolved to tone down my literary and verbal hostility toward the prime minister, I figured it was a resolution which I would break sooner rather than later. But damned if I didn’t break that there New Year’s resolution even before the New Year made an appearance. Yup, I had some choice words for that smart fool right about the first time I saw his New Year’s message. It was awful, wasn’t it? You know what? I wish Dean Oliver was a stupid man. Then I could get away with an off-colour comment like – ‘your prime minister’s so stupid, he thought fruit punch was a gay boxer.’ But he’s not a stupid man, not really. He’s a very, very smart man who does and says very, very stupid things. He’s an intellectual wunderkind who thinks that all the rest of us are getting by on the dregs and crumbs left after he gobbled up all the brains and brilliance being offered. That must be it. I can’t imagine why else he would have thought Belizeans would greet with rapture his new year’s offering of unadulterated rubbish and just plain bullshit. Because that’s all it was…about 10 minutes of beautifully packaged, directed, choreographed and produced bullshit. Let me just say that by now I am quite sure that he has been made aware that we do not believe the words that are coming out of his mouth. I won’t go into detail on the drivel he tried to feed us, but he sure was happy as a clam, stating that ‘we feel especially good about the year that's ending, and even

King Dean got up to toast his family past and present…somewhere between the hors d’oeuvres and canapés and Moet. Now I understand. All those fancy words about the good times of plenty in 2010 and the riches and prosperity to be had in 2011 were not for us. They were for the prime minister’s loved ones. After I saw Dean Oliver’s New Year’s address I went outside the room and asked a friend if he thought the prime minister actually believed the nonsense he was spouting in such grand fashion. I mean jeez, I look around and I sure don’t see what the hell he is referring to. I’ve heard about political spin and propagandizing, but this is much more than that, much bigger than that…this is a whole other country cause the prime minister was not talking about Belize – not this Belize under the UDP. You want to reach a clearer understanding as to why we are where we are? You don’t have to look much further than Dean Oliver’s ludicrous

19 New Year’s message. See, in Barbados there were 79 murders in 2009 and 84 in 2010. The slight increase was enough to create a groundswell of protest and clamour for answers and solutions, including hanging. In Belize, we had 103 murders in 2009 and 132 in 2010 and our prime minister quite proudly boasts in his address that ‘crime appears, albeit slowly, to be giving way to our now resumed, now unstoppable march of progress.’ See what I mean? Makes absolutely no sense at all. So there goes my resolution to be nice to Dean Oliver. Better that I had resolved to be a thorn in his side as much as I can and as often as I can. That one I can keep. If the prime minister knows that I think he’s a brilliant megalomaniac fool who is full in equal parts of himself and shit, then so be it. If he doesn’t waste one random thought on me in the course of his day, then that’s okay too. I’ll just call it catharsis of my soul. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that…at least till next week.

2011…It Must be the Year of the Rebirth!

Carolyn Trench-Sandiford Deputy Party Leader They say that time waits for no one…it simply moves on. Today is January 7th. This marks 3 years that the United Democratic Party has been in office. It is a time they have spent squandering the confidence and hope the Belizean people so trustingly gave to them…a time they have spent pushing Belize closer and closer to political, economic and societal disintegration and oblivion, and inevitably to the grave. Belize is slowly dying. This is sad. This is tragic. This is heartbreaking, as 2011 is also the year that we celebrate 30 years of political independence, and 61 years of the peaceful constructive revolution, which was birthed to bring to all Belizeans a better quality of life, and a just share of the wealth of this nation. The stark reality in 2011 is that Belize has the highest poverty rate in the Caribbean. 143,276 persons or 43% in Belize are now poor, and cannot find $5.30 a day to eat, and an additional 14%, or 46,648 persons are vulnerable

to becoming poor. This totals 189,924 persons or 53% and more than half of the population of Belize. Unemployment is at a staggering 55% in many communities, particularly among youth and women, and the only available options are to sell drugs and be engaged in other criminal activities. Any new investments are certain to be casinos and pawn shops. Over 60% of all families are living in unacceptable conditions, and approximately 25% of that, in inhumane and deplorable conditions. The National Health Insurance [NHI], the only health care safety net for the marginalized, which is the first stage for preventative health care, and the noncontributory pension for the elderly, are being insidiously withdrawn. 31,000 children or 30.2 % of primary and secondary age are excluded from schools, with sixth form and university out of the reach of over 95% of our population. In many of these communities, frustration and fear of life has led to increase in domestic and sexual exploitation of children. Marijuana use is on the rise, as a means of removing one’s mind from what confronts them blatantly, each and every day, over and over again, but reality returns, when the high is gone, as the horizon is still ominous. As Bob Marley reminds us in one of his classic songs – ‘Excuse me while I light my spliff…Oh God, I have to take a whiff…but from reality I just can’t drift.’ We enter 2011 with one of the highest murder rates in the world, and the fifth in the region, with preliminary tally by Amandala reporter Aaron Humes at 39.62 per 100,000, well above the internationally accepted benchmark of 30 per 100,000 in average nations. According to Humes, more than half the murder victims in 2010 were under the age of 30, and

9 were children. What does this say about our future, particularly for our young black men? We have witnessed the gradual re-colonization of our country, with our country mortgaged to international financial institutions, foreign countries and companies for over 2 billion dollars, and tourism, a dependency industry, controlled by foreign entities, being our number one foreign exchange earner. We continue to be beggars internationally, yet shake our heads in incomprehension when Kim Simples Barrow, the wife of the Prime Minister of Belize, went with hat in hand to BNE’s Board in Ireland, to solicit money for the building of a resource center for southside Belize City, while out of $821.7 million dollars generated from oil exports, BNE’s take is $647.6 million or 79% and the people of Belize receive a paltry $174.1 million or 21%. They must have been laughing at us unlearned natives. Where is the just share of the wealth? Is 2011 any different today from when the logwood and mahogany and sugar were being shipped out of Belize to enrich mother England? Our government says our border is artificial. But maybe in the true sense it is, as we now have an adjacency zone instead of a border, with Guatemalans crossing freely and raping our resources daily, despite the herculean efforts of our under resourced and overworked security forces and natural resource managers, and planes are landing with impunity on our highways and in our faces at our international airport. Is territorial integrity and national sovereignty the cry anymore? Our national heroes can be counted on two fingers, and national honours are pulled out of a closet each year by a select few. The Belizean

dollar still has the Queen on it, and becoming a member of the British Empire is still something to aspire for, but the British is saying hasta la vista, and as we lament their departure, we are looking to the United States to save us. Is national pride and unity an impossible dream? Will the CCJ be any different from the Privy Council in delivering justice? The reality is that we have regressed. We have not fulfilled the dreams and hopes of those who fought for independence, and the right to charter our own destiny. Where is the better quality of life for all? How is it that a few still have so much, and the masses are still suffering in a country that is so rich with wealth untold? Has anything really changed? Decision making is still in the hands of a few, but maybe now taking place in Belmopan, Washington and other capitals, instead of London, and legitimized by our parliament. Are the remnants of the British political parliamentary system of governance serving all of us or just a few? Yet, I am the proverbial optimist. As did the Rt. Hon. George Price and the architects believe in the people of Belize in 1950, so do I in 2011. I am hopeful that we will understand, sooner or later, that the revolution that we are engaged in may no longer be peaceful. It must now transition to an all out war to radically transform our nation. As Belize lies on its deathbed, it is incumbent upon all of us as Belizeans, to confront the truth of the sordid state of affairs of our country. We must be prepared to break the cycle of perpetual subjection of our people, of creating a new political, economic and social order, for only so can the revolution continue, and only so will a NEW BELIZE be born, which will bring to all Belizeans a better life and a just share of the national wealth…

Marcos Salas Arias wins 21st annual KREM “Sugar & Cream” New Year’s cycling classic

Team Benny’s Megabytes’ Costa Rican import Marcos Salas Arias won the 21st edition of the annual KREM “Sugar & Cream” New Year’s Day cycling classic. Salas Arias clocked 3:59:55 on his 90 mile ride from the Corozal border to the finish line at the Mahogany Street junction with the Central American boulevard in Belize City to win the $2,000 first prize, a round trip ticket to the continental USA from American Airlines and the winners’ trophy. Salas and his teammate, Juan Carlos Rojas, had dominated the second half of the race after leaving Orange Walk Town. They crossed the finish line with hands raised together in a V-for-victory salute, and Salas front wheel was only slightly ahead of Rojas, who claimed the $1,500 2nd prize and trophy. Salas’ time was nowhere near the record of 3:29:00, but the Radio KREM outside broadcast crew had time to interview both riders before the 2006 Cross Country champion, Team Western Spirits’ Shane Vasquez, the first Belizean, crossed the finish line 16 minutes later to win the $1,000 3rd prize. Team Zamir ’s Allen Castillo took the $500.00 4th prize and Team Santino’s Hernan Ochaeta won the $350 5th prize. Henry Moreira, riding unattached, won the $275.00 6th prize and Team Zamir’s Venezuelan import Gil Cordoves pulled in 7th to win a $200 prize, edging out Team C-Ray’s Brandon Cattouse who claimed the $175.00 8th prize. Team Western Spirits’ Peter

Choto outsprinted Team Indeco’s David Henderson of Belmopan to take the $150.00 9th prize, while Henderson took the $100.00 10th prize. Some 84 riders, 73 Belizeans and 11 foreigners, began the race which saw only 46 finish. A 5-man breakaway soon established a half mile lead on the main group with Christian McNish taking the first $100 prize sponsored by Vista Auto Rental at Hotel Maya in Corozal, and he was still leading at San Joaquin where he also won one night’s accommodation with lunch at the Cahal Pech Village Resort. Johnny Briceno and Jaime Briceno at the Shell One Stop gas station in Orange Walk Town. Arana, Castillo and McNish got dropped from the lead group leaving Orange Walk Town and only Salas, Rojas, Santizo and

Belizean Jose Choto remained. By mile 45, Salas and Rojas had opened up a 5 minute lead on their nearest rivals. Rojas took the $100 prize sponsored by Brothers Habet at Mile 35, and he and Salas would share all the remaining prizes on their breakaway ride to the city, claiming the $200 prize offered by Eustest Dawson Auto Sales at the Crooked Tree Junction and a $50 offered by All Upholstery. He would also claim a case of Campari Premium Wines & Spirits at the mile 30 marker. Salas was still on the pace to win two computerized eye exams and a 20% discount on eyeglass frames offered by Dr. Amin Hegar and Belize Vision Center, as they passed through Biscayne Village. Belizeans Giovanni Choto, Hernan Ochaeta and Shane Vasquez were mounting a chase, but they were 7 minutes behind the lead duo. Salas and Rojas took time out to rehydrate with Red Bull as they passed the junction with the old Maskall Road at mile 19, and Salas claimed a $100 sheep sponsored by Belize Rural North area representative Hon. Edmond Castro. Salas won another sheep from Castro at the junction with the Burrell Boom bypass road, where they were leading the chase group

by 10 minutes. Rojas took over the pace to win a $100 sheep sponsored Mark Velasquez and family at Mile 13 ½, also winning a $100 prize sponsored by Dr. Joel Cervantes and Neurosurgical Spinal Services at Mile 13, and a $400 prize offered by Allen Thurton and his family Salas won the $50 prize sponsored by Belize Optical Service at Mile 11 ¼. He also won $50 free cable from Centaur Cable Network at Mile 8 ¾. He also won a $300 prize offered by Delmart Hardware & Lumber Yard at the Airport junction. Rojas was still on the pace passing the Haulover Bridge, where he won two $100 prizes each from Rosado's Hardware and Freetown Drugstore. Salas took over the pace passing the Maheia's United Compound to claim a $100 prize from Maheia’s United Concrete Supplies, and Rojas won a Large BBQ grill from Bilal Welding at mile 3. Salas took over the pace at the first roundabout at mile two and a half to win two months’ weightlifting and toning at Neal & Gordon’s Gym, then Rojas won a bottle of tequila offered by Royal Wholesale and Retail as they entered the city, as well as a $75 prize offered by Santos Diaz & Sons in memory of 1981 Cross Country champion Alpheus Williams.

Wilmer Garcia converted for the Ambassadors’ first penalty, but Marlon Meza converted for Verdes to tie the ball game at 1-1. Griga dang fans roared their approval when Dennis Serano blasted in the first goal in the 32nd minute of play, and the Griga defense anchored by Karim Peters, Allan Flores and Harrison Tasher frustrated the best efforts of San Felipe’s strikers Oscar Acevedo, Harvey Cruz and Deris Benavides to hold on to their 1-0 lead up to the half time break. Something had to give and Deris Benavides tied the score at 1-1 when he scored the visitors’ first goal in the 55th minute of play. Griga United regained the lead 2-1 when Alexander Peters scored their 2nd goal in the 63rd minute of play, and they led 2-1, until Harvey Cruz penetrated the defense to score

the visitors’ 2nd goal in the 72nd minute of play. Both sides now strived for the game-winner, and it seemed the game might have to go into overtime, until Oscar Acevedo scored San Felipe’s 3rd winning goal in the 90th minute of regulation time. The national team is competing in the Central American championships in Panama on January 14-18, so

HANGOVER HELPERS - WHERE SCIENCE MEETS CUISINE

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s almost a natural law: people will imbibe on the occasion of the arrival of a New Year. We talk science here not anthropology so we cannot get into the origin of the social practice. Suffice to say, the first day of the New Year is usually the occasion for a hangover of global, pandemic proportions! Not to fear, the researchers from Australia to Alaska have been looking for ways to ease the global fuzziness and queasiness of the world population on “the morning after last night's drinking spree”. My apologies for not getting this to you before the Holiday season but I trust you will clip and save this page for the next time...where there is alcohol, there will be hangovers. So the only question for the groggy biochemistry of “goma”. Alcohol is abreveler is how to handle that fuzzy, sorbed by the stomach and metabolized icky feeling the next day. Pancakes It's hard to think of a food more comforting than pancakes, but these sweet treats also do you another kind of favor: Complex carbs help maintain a steady level of sugar in your bloodstream, balancing out the fact that as your liver detoxes, your blood sugar drops. It allows you to champion over a hangover. Bananas Hangover help is packed in this yellow fruit, which replaces the potassium lost in the detox process. (Don't forget, alcohol is a diuretic, so it causes you

to flush out key nutrients faster than usual.) Plus, bananas boost your electrolytes, just as sports drinks do. Bacon Bacon is everywhere these days because it's soooo tasty, and lucky for us, the amino acids in bacon are a hangover's best friend. However, too much of a very fatty food may irritate the stomach further, so just a couple of strips on, say, a lean burger makes a good dose, especially if you're getting up late and breakfast is no longer an option. A study in Britain showed that bacon also boasts the benefits of the Maillard reaction, a fancy term that translates into a very basic pleasure principle: "Bacon just makes you feel better, confirms the researcher.” Chocolate Like bananas, chocolate is full of the potassium that you lose during recovery, so your sorry state is a good excuse to indulge in an ultra chocolate brownie or cake. Have it for breakfast on one of those Saturday mornings after an extended Friday Happy Hour. Better yet, have a cup of our local, heart healthy all-natural GOSS chocolate powder, or kick goma by turning two bananas and some GOSS chocolate with some milk into a hangover helper on steroids. I'll join you in a glass of that drink! Salud!

The Truth Shall Make You Free

BARROW…..

Wish-washy, namby-pamby ‘poco-tiempo’ GOB…
