Belize fails U.S. Human Trafficking Test Downgraded to Tier 3 “for not fully complying and not making significant efforts” Belize City, July 28, 2015 Belize’s efforts at fighting human trafficking have worsened. That’s according to the latest annual report from the U.S. State Department, which rates 188 countries on their efforts to stamp out the scourge. On Tuesday, July 28th the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry released the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. He explained that the report sought to enlighten, energize and empower activists fighting the “human trafficking industry” across every continent. But in Belize’s case, it exposed a failing system. Belize was downgraded from 2014. The latest report indicates that the U.S. has placed Belize in Tier 3 category for not fully complying and not making significant efforts to fighting trafficking in person. Tier 3 is the worst it could get for any country. Belize is only 1 of six nations who have been downgraded. It shared the blacklist with strange countries like Belarus, Burundi, Comoros, the Marshall Islands and South Sudan. So what caused Belize’s failing grade? Here’s what the 2015 report highlighted: - Belizean women and girls were subjected to sex trafficking by family members, but the government has not arrested family members engaged in this form of traffick-
ing. - Child sex tourism, involving primarily U. S. citizens, is an emerging trend, concentrated in areas where tourism is important to the local economy. - Sex trafficking and forced labor of Belizean and foreign women, girls, and LGBT persons, primarily from Central America, occurs in bars, nightclubs, brothels, and domestic service. - Underage girls are reportedly present in bars that function as brothels. - Foreign men, women, and children—particularly from Central America, Mexico, and Asia—migrate voluntarily to Belize in search of work; some may fall victim
What the TIP Tiers mean Tier 1: Governments fully comply with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act’s (TVPA) minimum standards. Tier 2: Governments do not fully comply, but are making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance. Tier 2 Watch List: Governments do not fully comply, but are making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance, as well as other negative indicators. Tier 3: Governments do not fully comply and are not making significant efforts to do so. Source: U.S. State Department.
03 3 to forced labor in restaurants, shops, agriculture, and fishing. - Traffickers often recruit through false promises of relatively high-paying jobs and subsequently subject victims to forced labor or sex trafficking. - Trafficking-related complicity by government officials, including allegations of involvement of high-level officials, remains a problem. The report was very critical of the Barrow Administration’s inability to tackle the issues above. It stated that the “Government of Belize does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so”. It further disapproved of the Government’s “decreased efforts to investigate and prosecute trafficking offenses and convict traffickers” in 2014. “The government did not initiate any new prosecutions or convict any traffickers, including complicit government officials, in 2014, a decline from convicting one trafficker in 2013 and two in 2012. A prosecution from the previous reporting period, in which a suspect was arrested and charged with one count of trafficking involving a child, remained pending. Investigations of five human trafficking cases from previous years remained pending. Many off-duty police officers provide security for sex trade locales, which risks inhibiting victims from coming forward and law enforcement’s willingness to investigate allegations of trafficking in the sex trade,” the report stated. Belize and the countries demoted to Tier 3 could face penalties which are at the discretion of the U.S. President, and could include restrictions on non-humanitarian assistance and funding. The Obama Administration says it has a zero tolerance policy for human trafficking and considers it “a modern-day version of slavery”.

Five Major Agenda Points ADDRESS TO THE NATION
by Hon. Francis Fonseca Leader of the People’s United Party 27 July 2015 My fellow Belizeans, Nobody knows better than you the very serious problems and challenges facing our Belizean families, communities and nation. Too many of you know and live each day the pain and anguish of NOT being able to put food on the table, to make ends meet, to educate your children, to get proper healthcare, to keep a roof over your head. Jobs are scarce and unemployment is high. Wages are stagnant, and so is our economy. The only significant growth that has been recorded is the amount of external debt, which is now an astronomical 2.3 billion dollars and growing every day. The cost of living has gone up and the purchasing power of your dollar has gone down. Crime, and the angel of death stalk our youth, and the rate of murder, rape and sexual assault is fast approaching crisis proportion. Belize – our Belize – is the nation with the fourth highest homicide rate per capita, in the world. Our current UDP Government acts like they are our rulers, informing us that we will go to the ICJ, whether we like it or not; while allowing the death of Danny Conorquie to go unanswered; our reef to be wrecked; Guatemalan companies to build our FOBs and ultimately, seeking permission to build a base on our sovereign territory. A Governments first and most sacred duty and obligation is the protection of our territorial integrity and national sovereignty. This UDP Government has failed in this solemn duty and for this alone THEY MUST GO AND GO NOW! In the hour when it seems darkest, if you are a person of faith, you DO NOT give in to despair. You KNOW that light approaches, and that the dawn of deliverance is near. Your faith sustains you, and gives you new resolve and hope.
Your People’s United Party, with your support, will bring us into that dawn of a day that will see social justice for all, economic and governance reform, education and health reform. We provide for your review and approval, the following five major agenda points •
The PUP knows best how to create jobs and put money in your pockets. We will do so for you and your families;
•
NO to the ICJ. Guatemala must first respect our sovereignty and territorial integrity as an equal partner and neighbor;
•
Roll out NHI across Belize and ensure that all Belizeans have access to basic medicines and quality healthcare. No longer must our people die because they can’t afford the healthcare they need;
•
Appoint the 13th Senator and Repeal the abusive PetroCaribe Act which contravenes the Finance and Audit Act and replace it with a law that conforms to our existing fiscal and audit laws and regulations, so that the PetroCaribe program may be utilized to benefit all Belizeans;
•
The time has come for us as a Nation to boldly and proudly declare that we will make education from pre-school to 6th form FREE. There is no better investment that we can make than that we make in Education.
We CAN achieve these things. WE can create meaningful change; WE CAN make Belize the best place on earth to live, love, work, and play.
That hour of darkness may be here, but I appeal to your faith. I appeal to your resolve. I appeal to your hope.
I ask you today, with humility, with hope, with the knowledge that YOU hold the power to create this new Belize, to join me, join me and my team, join hands with us, hearts with us, HOPE WITH US.
Together, we WILL RISE. Our BELIZE WILL SHINE AGAIN.
WE CAN CREATE A BETTER BELIZE… Power to the People

Taking bread from poor peoples’ mouths CitCo chances women street vendors Belize City, July 24, 2015 If it were not for the embarrassing public spectacle of their cruel behaviour and actions, Mayor Darrel Bradley and the Belize City Council would have succeeded in taking away bread from the mouths of two hardworking women vendors who make ends meet for their families by selling newspapers and used school books. On Friday morning, City Council special constables launched a vicious assault on the hardworking vendors along Queen Street. Among them were Myrna and Yolanda Montejo, two single-parent mothers who use a private space next to the sidewalk to sell used school books and newspapers. The women reported to the BELIZE TIMES that two female special constables showed up and demanded that they move from the area because they were illegally occupying public space. Myrna, who occupies a small space on the steps of the Vogue Building which is owned by the Catholic Diocese to sell used school books during the summer days, said the special constables were disrespectful and out of line.
“I make sure that when people come to buy they stand on the side so that they are not in anyone’s way. Now all of a sudden they want to charge me and move me, the people from City Council, the Special Constable. Then the female constable, because she is a supervisor or something like that, she had attitude with my daughter telling her that her patience was running
thin,” she said. Montejo has been selling newspapers, including the BELIZE TIMES, for over forty years. She is there for only three days of the week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. She doesn’t disturb anyone and has the permission of the building’s owners to utilise the space. She was also harassed by the CitCo police. “I have been selling papers for
BYM appeals for recall of mandatory insurance for UB students July 29, 2015 The Belize Youth Movement, the youth arm of the People’s United Party, is calling on the Board of the University of Belize to recall the newly-imposed mandatory insurance scheme for students registering for the new school year. This new fee will act as yet another prohibitive factor for young people who are already struggling to access tertiary-level education. Statistics show that a staggering 93% of our youth-adult-aged population does not access tertiary-level learning. We recall that the cost of UB fees increased for students following the cancellation of the Government’s student-subsidy in 2012 and other increases in fees every other year. We are not against the idea of offering insurance to students as an option and with proper notification, but all indications
are that the stiff decision was arrived at without any form of consultation with the student body and imposed without notice. The University also clearly failed to carry out the necessary evidence-based analysis to ensure that this policy decision does not adversely affect students. The decision; therefore, is arbitrary and grossly unreasonable. Instead of finding ways to bleed our students financially, the University management should find ways of easing the cost of education at the institution. We view this decision as a nothing more than a front for rich private interests at the expense of students’ education. We call on students to speak out and reject the mandatory insurance, and on the University to withdraw the decision forthwith. [End]

2015 over forty years. We asked the Father for his permission and he said it is okay but we would have to ask the owner who rents the place. So from then we have been selling out here. I’m not making a lot of money from papers, I only make about $40 from 100 papers and it takes me a long time to sell all the papers. I have my children and my grandchildren, I don’t have a man, so what do they expect me to do? Steal? That is the only thing I can say,” she related. The special constables showed unprofessional behaviour and grave insolence. They did not provide the vendors with a notice or even a warning. Even after the vendors explained that permission had been granted to them, the Special Constables went for Police Officers, only added salt to the wounds. They went for Police Officers to reinforce their wrongful actions. When members of the public gathered in the area and showed support for the vendors, the chancey officials scurried away. For Myrna, what she does is more than just business. Her used books entrepreneurial initiative gives many families who are facing hardships some ease as they can obtain books at an affordable cost instead of having to purchase new books that are costly. “The reason why I came out here to sell books is because a lot of people can’t afford the books at the shops so when they come to buy books from me I give them at a low rate and I find that when I do that I am helping people. Now I’m not doing anybody anything I am making an honest living like everybody else, I have kids to support, I am a single parent so I have to do three or four jobs to support them. My daughter just graduated because this is what put her through school. I have one in first form, this one is in second, I don’t have anybody who is giving me anything, I don’t go to the minister to ask them for anything because when you go there they turn you around and push you around. I decided to stand on my feet,” she stated. Myrna also had strong words for Mayor Darrel Bradley, under whose instructions the special constables acted. She said Bradley, who jumped from Mayor to UDP standard bearer for the Caribbean Shores less than two months in office, will definitely not get the support of her family in that division, not only because he is trying to starve grassroots families with his Council’s cruel policies, but also because he has ignored the plight of the poor. “…all of my people are from Kelly Street and he wants support from Kelly Street and Hunter’s Lane; those are my people that are there and yet he will try to take bread out of my mouth, the people that are trying in life. If you go up there at their place (City Hall) they have nothing to give you. You know how many times I have gone there and asked him for help… and up to now, I get nothing,” she stated. Fortunately for Myrna and Yolanda, the special constables have not returned and they continue to do business on Queen Street. The BELIZE TIMES will keep a close watch.

Vega’s case against Monchi Cervantes suffers major blow
Claimants seek time to “regroup”, trial adjourned to September 17th Belize City, July 24, 2015 Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin denied a request by Senior Counsel Rodwell Williams to allow the use of a transcribed document as evidence in the defamation trial between Acting Prime Minister and UDP Orange Walk North Area Representative Gaspar Vega and PUP Orange Walk North Standard Bearer Ramon Monchi Cervantes, as the parties met for the second day in court on Friday, April 24, 2015. The transcribed document is an unofficial translation of an audio recording that is in Vega’s possession. In Court, Vega claimed that the recording he has is the same as that which was played at a memorial service for the late Ramon Cervantes Sr., the first respondent’s father. The service was held five months after Cervantes Sr. had been found murdered, buried in a grave at an abandoned property in the Honey Camp Area of the Orange Walk District. Cervantes Sr., who resided in Orange Walk Town, was kidnapped during a visit to his cane farm. After days of searching, three men were detained and reportedly led Orange Walk Police officials to the site where the body had been buried. Cervantes Sr. had a gunshot to his head. His hands were bound by Police handcuffs. The audio recording aired at the Cervantes Sr.’s memorial service was explosive. It contained the voice of Manuel Castillo, who the Police identified as the main suspect in the kidnapping and murder. Castillo is a wanted fugitive. The recording was of a telephone conversation between Castillo and Cervantes Sr widow, Vilma, which took place at 8:23pm on Wednesday October 8th. In the conversation, Castillo alleges that Gaspar Vega and members of the Orange Walk Police Department are involved in the kidnapping and murder. Vega has told the Court that he ob-
Ramon “Monchie” Cervantes Jr.
Manuel Castillo tained his copy of the recording from Love FM radio. But he is not suing Love FM. Instead he is suing Fiesta FM radio, the second respondents who are an Orange Walk-based radio station. He accuses them of transmitting the memorial service on live radio. Fiesta FM’s attorney, Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay, denied vehemently that his clients aired the full recording because they experienced technical difficulties and had to stop live transmission early. Williams has called three witnesses to testify in an attempt to corroborate the accusation. Two witnesses, Acting Prime Minister Gaspar Vega and San Antonio Rio Hondo resident

Gaspar Vega Josue Castillo testified on Thursday morning. The third, Hector Bobadilla, took the witness stand on Friday. They all claimed to have listened to about 5 minutes of the recording on Fiesta FM, but Courtenay has strenuously challenged that testimony. A fourth witness would have been Ms. Kelly Guzman, but she never made it because the Court refused the transcribed document she had prepared. Williams had failed to submit that document as part of the witness statements by the March 27th 2015 deadline given by Chief Justice Benjamin. He attempted to enter the document on June 25th 2015. Courtenay and the attorney for Ramon Cervantes Jr., Senior Counsel Said Musa, objected to Williams’ appeal in Court. The trial closed on Thursday afternoon with the understanding that the Chief Justice would decide on the request when it resumed on Friday morning. The following day, the trial opened with Williams presented arguments as to why the court should use “its discretion” and allow him to enter the transcribed material as evidence. Williams contended that there were no clear and specific requirements within the Civil Procedure Rules that dealt with transcribed
07 7 information being entered as a witness statement. Williams put to the Court that even if he failed to comply with the rules of entering the document as witness material, he was in full compliance with all the orders of the court. The trial took a brief adjournment and when it resumed at 1:30pm in the afternoon, the Chief Justice gave his decision that the rules had not been followed by the claimants and that the Court has no discretion to allow “new evidence” after the fact. He refused Williams request and declared that the Kelly Guzman’s transcription would not be allowed in court. The third witness, Hector Bobadilla, took the stand thereafter. He required a translator since he could only communicate in the Spanish language. Bobadilla gave his occupation as a driver but under interrogation by Senior Counsel Said Musa he admitted that he was also a vegetable importer who relied on obtaining a Ministry of Agriculture permit to carry out his trade. He admitted to knowing that Vega is the Minister of Agriculture. Bobadilla was then sternly questioned by Musa about what he had heard on the radio. He could not recall clearly what time of the day he tuned in to the radio, but said that he first heard the audio recording followed by announcers discussing the matter in Spanish. Bobadilla adamantly stated that it was Fiesta FM which he had been listening to, but also claimed that he only tuned in for about five minutes. Under cross-examination by Courtenay, Bobadilla stated that he had provided and signed his witness statement on March 20th 2015, nearly five months after the memorial services was held. Courtenay then asked Bobadilla if he remembered which attorneys witnessed his signing of the statements. He responded, “I don’t know these men well” and eventually feebly pointed at Williams. Courtenay then asked Bobadilla to tell the court what he remembered about the day he heard the audio recording on the radio. Bobadilla remained silent for a while, until Courtenay interjected saying, “You don’t remember the day, don’t you?” The witness then responded, “not really but I know it was the (November) 5th”. The trial was adjourned until September 17, due to the schedules of the Chief Justice and the attorneys. It is expected that more witnesses will be called to the stand, as the case unfolds at the Supreme Court. Outside the court, during media interviews, the attorneys continued to battle, but this time the subject was whether the Love FM recording would be allowed as evidence in court. The attorneys for the respondents were adamantly against it. “It is our position that the claimant will not be allowed to play the recording in court. Mr. Williams says that he is going to make such an application. I would only describe it as a novel application and we look forward to seeing the law that would support that. I am not sure where he is going to find it,” said Courtenay “They’re only relying on a tape from Love FM which is not really evidence. It is totally irrelevant to this case,” added Musa.

Cinco Puntos Principales MENSAJE A LA NACIÓN
Apelo a vuestra esperanza.

Reid Not a blade a grass! By G. Michael Reid “Let every citizen be assured that we do not intend to be integrated, reincorporated, assimilated or taken over by any country. The whole world knows that our political aims are self-government within the Commonwealth and Independence...while we shall not surrender even one square centimeter of our national territory, we do not propose to spew recrimination or insults against our neighbors....because of our steadfastness, our demeanor, our willingness to meet our neighbors at the conference table, we expect in time that they will acknowledge our right to freely exercise the principle of self-determination, guaranteed us by the Charter of the United Nations, self-determination to be a nation.” ~ Rt. Hon. George Price in an address entitled, “Appointment with History” on August 5th, 1962. “In respect to the territory of Belize, we come to the conclusion that the most important thing was to recognize the right to self-determination...I believe .....that we will respect the law and if the President of the Republic, who is the maximum authority in the nation, respects the law, then all Guatemalans must respect it. History shall judge what this has cost and the benefits that shall be derived” – Guatemalan President Jorge Serrano Elias in a speech to the people of Guatemala in November of 1992 The debate surrounding the Guatemalan Claim has heated up considerably and has been dominating the public discourse for the past few weeks. Actually, since the death of Tourism Police Danny Cornorquie, this issue has never really moved off the front burner and Belizeans remain engaged. This past

Monday, the media was called out to Raddison Fort George where the Foreign Ministers from both Belize and Guatemala along with senior representatives from the Organization of American States (OAS) agreed to face the press and answer a few questions. Instead of quelling fears as it was supposedly meant to do however, this latest move seems to have done more to aggravate the situation. The problem is that Belizeans do not trust Guatemala. What is even worse is that our people now seem to have also lost trust in our own government and in particular, Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington. What it is about Elrington that rubs a lot of people the wrong way is difficult to pinpoint but it exist and it is protuberant. Maybe it is the way he speaks, the way he tends to look down and talk down to people, his
reason they might have had. Lately however, even the few who were undecided or were in favor of going seem to be shifting their stance and now seem more inclined to voting no. That shift I believe is as a direct result of watching and listening to Sedi Elrington. He is so obviously, not the man for this job! I listened to activist Patrick Rogers and I must say that this man has a valid point. Rogers believes that even if we should decide to go to the ICJ that we should first insist that whatever judgment is handed down would be strictly pecuniary and would involve no ceding of land. That cost then, should there be one, should be shared by England who was initially responsible for reaching and breaching the treaty of 1859. This is something that I believe we can live with and why was this not considered before rushing to sign this dreadful Compromi? A major part of our problem here in Belize is that despite the perpetual problems surrounding this “claim”, we have not been properly educating our people. Guatemala on the other hand, teaches about it in their schools and every child growing up there is taught that Belize belongs to them. Here in Belize, we have hundreds of stu-
standing for our national anthem and having more respect for our flag. Belizeans are loyal to no end to political parties but don’t seem to give a damn about this country. This has to change! This Guatemalan claim has officially been a thorn in our sides since 1940. At first we were fearful but that fear has morphed into indignation. Despite Guatemala being much bigger and with an infinitely larger military might, Belizeans are more determined than ever to stand up to this bully. In their recent campaign, which has included the press conference, a public forum and appearances on our morning talk shows, Elrington and his Guatemalan counterpart have been preaching peace. According to Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Carlos Raul Morales, “There are enough wars in the world. We don’t need a war between Guatemala and Belize; we need peace and we need to be smart and this is why we are diplomats because our responsibility is to avoid crisis. There are people that they live from war. We don’t, we don’t. We are friends and we want to build the peace”. Peace between Belize and Guatemala can be easily achieved. There is but one major stumbling block in the way and only Guatemala can remove that. It is simple; just drop this dratted unfounded claim and allow our peoples to coexist in peace and harmony. Stop all the lip service and empty rhetoric and do what is necessary, sensible and reasonable. To continue clinging to this chimerical inheritance as some proof of ownership in this day and age is preposterous. For us to keep entertaining this foolishness despite having the full support of every country in the world is even more laughable. What we have here is not a quarrel between two but an aggression by one. Drop the claim and let us live in peace!
The problem is that Belizeans do not trust Guatemala. What is even worse is that our people now seem to have also lost trust in our own government and in particular, Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington jargon, his body language; maybe all of the above. Elrington was his usual boorish self this past Monday when he spouted that “every leading intellectual in this country…has agreed that this (going to the ICJ) is the right route to take”; as if suggesting that those who are opposed are less than intellectual. Not sure if any formal poll has ever been taken but every informal poll suggests that by this statement, Elrington has directly disrespected the majority of Belizeans. Except for diehard supporters, who would go to hell if their party leader asked them to, most Belizeans are dead set against going to the International Court of Justice. Despite the fact that the Constitution of both countries demand a referendum on this matter, officials from both countries seem to have decided that this is the way they will go. It seems now that our government will be bullying, buying and trying every trick in the book to get Belizeans onboard this idea. Something tells me that it will not be as easy a sell as they think. The majority of Belizeans have always been against the idea of gambling our sovereignty before any court but there were some who were unsure and some who were even outright in favor; for whatever
dents who come across the border daily from Guatemala to attend our schools. I would not be in favor of disallowing this but why do we not teach these and our own students that Belize belongs to no one but Belizeans? Why is there no pledge of allegiance? Teachers are more likely to teach political partisanship than patriotism to our students. Our people must become more respectful of our national symbols like

Guyana warns in Washington about the Venezuelan threat to its territory Guyana’s territorial dispute with neighboring Venezuela represents a threat to its very survival, President David Granger warned Friday in Washington. After a recent offshore oil find, the row between the two countries has escalated, with Venezuela laying claim to a huge swathe of Guyana’s territory.
President David Granger Monday, July 27th 2015 - 05:20 UTC Reprinted from MercoPress “Guyana at the moment is facing a challenge to its survival by a larger state,” Granger told guests at the William Perry Center of Hemispheric Defense Studies. Caracas claims waters off the Essequibo region that would include the oil find. The region straddles the two countries and Venezuela disputes the settlement of the border drawn through the 215,000 square kilometer region. Granger warned the conflict could spill over if not dealt with quickly.
“The present threat, if not resolved promptly, if not resolved permanently, if not resolved peacefully could lead to deterioration of the security situation in the entire Caribbean and on the northern tier of the South American continent,” he said. “This is too much to bear for a country with fewer than a million people.” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has blamed United States, including oil company Exxon Mobil, for provoking the dispute. Speaking about Granger’s visit to Washington, Maduro pointed his finger at the oil giant. “Who took him to Washington? Exxon Mobil,” he said at a ceremony under the slogan, “The sun in Venezuela rises in Essequibo.” Guyana has asked for the United Nations to help resolve the border dispute. Meanwhile it was reported from Georgetown that steps are to be taken to enable Guyana’s agricultural produce to enter Brazil following a meeting on a meeting on Saturday in Boa Vista between Agriculture Minister Noel Holder and an advisor to the Governor of Roraima state. Holder while engaged in talks with the former Governor and current Special Advisor to the Governor of Roraima, Neudo Ribeiro Campos expressed Guyana’s support for any efforts aimed at fostering closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Several issues relative to cross border trade, the road from Lethem to Linden, a deep water harbor and closer cooperation in the sharing of skills and expertise were also discussed. Following the latest round in the Essequibo dispute, the administration of president Maduro recently announced it would not be taking any more rice from Guyana. Rice is one of Guyana’s main exports.

A scientist found a way to dry clothes using barely any energy Jul. 29, 2015 Clothes dryers in the United States use about as much energy each year as the entire state of Massachusetts, according to an estimate from EnergyStar — which is part of the reason the Department of Energy is trying to develop more efficient home appliances. Among those making significant progress is Ayyoub Momen, a staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Like most Americans, he owns a dryer. But he says he hates using it. He knows it’s an energy hog, and it takes so long to dry anything. Then, one day, he was thinking about ultrasonic humidifiers — a kind of portable room humidifier that uses high-frequency vibrations to turn water into steam without getting hot. And Momen thought: What if I use the same technology on a piece of wet fabric? “The result was so amazing. It was like mind-blowing,” he says. “In less than 14 seconds, I could dry a piece of fabric from completely being wet. If I wanted to do the same thing with heat, it’s taking somewhere between 20 to 40 minutes.” Momen’s current prototype looks nothing like a conventional dryer. It’s basically a small circle of metal called a transducer that he plugs into a battery. He then douses a small piece of fabric in water and places it on top. The fabric sizzles and steams,

Ayyoub Momen demonstrates his technology. and in about 20 seconds, it’s dry. Momen says it uses barely any energy. “This dryer technology has the potential to save somewhere [around] 1 percent of the overall energy consumption of the United States,” he says. Venkat Venkatakrishnan, director of research and development at GE Appliances, calls the technology a “big breakthrough.” “It is not very far-fetched, not very difficult to do,” he says. “But it is not an idea that everybody thinks of, because there is a lot of science that goes into it.”
GE has partnered with Oak Ridge to help put the ultrasonic dryer on the market. They still have to test this technology on bigger batches of clothes and build a more sophisticated prototype. But, he says, “I think we are about four years away from being able to buy this dryer at a Home Depot or at Lowe’s or any appliance retailer.” He doesn’t know how much they’ll cost yet, and people might not run out to buy what could be an expensive purchase. Still, Venkatakrishnan thinks consumers will be willing to pay more to dry their clothes much faster — and, of course, save money on their electricity bill.
Hackers take control of smart car via the internet
29 July 2015 SMART cars are now hackable. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled 1.4 million of its vehicles after two hackers showed they could take control of a car via the internet. In a stunt for Wired, a couple of security researchers took control of a Jeep Cherokee remotely by hacking into the vehicle’s internet-connected entertainment system. After the pair showed that they could change the radio station and the air conditioning, lock the doors and operate the windscreen wipers, they finally killed the engine and slammed on the brakes. The car ended up in a ditch. Chrysler drivers will be sent a USB drive
containing updates to their car computer’s software that will close the vulnerability. The recall comes after two US senators last week announced plans to force car manufacturers to make sure cars are protected from such attacks. The cars involved in the recall include the following vehicles equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreens: 2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups 2013-2015 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Chassis Cabs 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs 2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs 2015 MY Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans 2015 Dodge Challenger sports coupes
29 July 2015 THEY thought they could get away with it. The 37 million users of adultery social network Ashley Madison (which has the slogan “Life is short. Have an affair”) had a get-out clause. Ashley Madison, like some other sites, offers a hard delete – a guarantee that for a certain amount of money, your data will be scrubbed from all of its internal records. To permanently destroy all traces of your affiliation costs £15 in the UK. Now a hacker collective called Impact Team has revealed that some customer details remain. Compliance with auditing requirements means that the credit card details and name used to erase the account remain in Ashley Madison’s database, the collective says, rather defeating the point. Serves them right, some might say. But the Ashley Madison hack is a reminder that there is a big gap between what firms tell us they do with our data and what they actually do. There is a lot of wiggle room in the technical details. Take Facebook, for example. The site advises that when you delete your account, people won’t be able to see it on Facebook. However, just because you can remove your profile from its servers doesn’t mean no data about you remains with Facebook. “Facebook’s data policy is ambiguous on what exactly it promises to delete after you delete your account,” says Brendan Van Alsenoy, a legal researcher at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in Belgium. So while Facebook is legally bound to delete things like status updates, the same legal protections may not apply to information that isn’t public-facing. “Copies of some material may remain in our database for technical reasons,” a Facebook representative told New Scientist. “When you delete your account, this material is disassociated from any personal identifiers”. According to European Union law, you can’t insist on deletion if the data has been sufficiently anonymised, says Van Alsenoy. Google’s fine print reveals similar caveats. While the company lets you delete your search history, it keeps the search logs, but dissociates them from your Google account, making them anonymised. However, data anonymisation is becoming increasingly unrealistic. “Re-identifying supposedly anonymised data has been demonstrated many times,” says information privacy legal scholar Paul Bernal of the University of East Anglia, UK, and it will only get easier as re-identification techniques become more sophisticated. Things might be improving. EU regulators have issued new guidelines on anonymisation, and the proposed reform of EU data protection includes an explicit “right to erasure”. So how would such information come to light? A hack would do it. But even if every company kept your information far from a hackable internet connection, there are still other ways for it to reappear. Many companies have fallen to the fickle winds of Silicon Valley. If Facebook crumbles, its valuable data may be sold on. For the time being, no one knows what data is kept, how identifiable it is, or how it can be strung together eventually – even if you have paid to delete that incriminating profile.

THINK ABOUT IT EARLY ELECTIONS How early is early? For early elections the government only needs 30 days. Can the elections be called for September 2015? Yes. Why? The conditions are as ripe as they can be. The government is at its strongest. The opposition appears to be the opposite. The government is flushed with money. The opposite is the case of the opposition. While the government has displayed no vision, and will only be able to campaign on streets and projects, a short campaign will allow them to get over the lack of issues. Bribery will be the UDP main method of campaigning. A September general elections is as good a speculation as any. This September will see most of the UDP illegal use of Petro Caribe monies showing results. The bogus battle of St. George’s Caye has sufficient Belizean/ Americans living in nostalgia and returning to the country they love, to shout the merry glee on their visit September. The opposition which is going through another of their internal rumbling is at its lowest ebb. It will only bounce back when there is full unity against Barrow and his tyranny. Granted, the announcement of early elections in the midst of Guatemala’s aggressive series of incidents against Belize will fan the latent fear that is bubbling amongst the population. Belizeans don’t trust Barrow and Elrington and believe they are conducting a carefully orchestrated plan to “resolve” the dispute by appeasing Guatemala and the British. Belize has lost sovereignty over the Sarstoon Island without a single shot being fired. What else is going to happen at this rate? There is also the economy. Years of reckless borrowing is now threatening to come crashing down. The legalized theft of BTL/BEL is now hundreds of millions of dollars that must be repaid. Interest rates for these debts over the past years have taken the amounts to over FIVE HUNDRED million easily. BTL alone is now FOUR HUNDRED million using the lower figures of its initial value. Add to this THREE HUNDRED & SEVENTY MILLION used up out of Petro Caribe funds (which have not been accounted for) and these figures, with interest amount to a cool BILLION dollars on top of government official figures of TWO BILLION, SEVEN HUNDRED million in debt as of last year. An early election will squander out the remaining one hundred million of Petro Caribe and a further fifty to one hundred million from tax-payer’s monies. The debt is over FOUR BILLION dollars and rising rapidly. The economic situation of Belize is dread. Everyday Petro bucket go da well, one day soon it battam must drop out. That day is sooner rather than later. One sad fact needs highlighting. With all these millions upon millions being wasted and squandered, the quality of our people’s lives has not improved one single bit. The percentage of poor people has not inched downwards by any yard stick. Batten down for another term of more victimization and hard times, while the cronies’ families and UDP elites live high off the hog. PHILLIP GOLDSON Phillip Goldson was officially awarded (after his death) with Belize’s highest honor, Order of the National Hero, by the UDP government in September of 2008. Mr. Goldson had left this world on 3 October 2001. At his funeral at Holy Redeemer Church, Hon. Dean Barrow (Leader of the Opposition) and Dickie Bradley (then Minister of
Government) spoke in glowing remembrance of a man who had helped form the PUP and later the UDP. In 1991 Mr. Goldson, in defiance of the UDP position resigned over a principled position against the then proposed Maritime Area law supported by Manuel Esquivel, Dean Barrow and most of the UDP Executive. He never returned to the UDP forming his own party NABR in 1993. Mr. Goldson was born on 25 July 1923. He was a public officer for eight years. He became a journalist and editor of the Belize Billboard. He was also an activist and trade unionist and was the national organizer and then Secretary General of the General Workers Union. He was an elected City Council and deputy Mayor. He was first elected as Area Representative for the Albert Division in 1965 and never lost until he withdrew in 1998. Prior to 1965 Mr. Goldson won a seat in 1954 in the newly-created Legislative Assembly which is now used as the Court of the Chief Justice of Belize. When Mr. Goldson was a fiery member of the PUP and editor of the Belize Billboard, an article appeared in the newspaper. It said: “There are two roads to self-government. Evolution and Revolution. We are now trying evolution”. For those simple, elementary, harmless words the British government arrested Goldson and another PUP activist Leigh Richardson, tried them for sedition and sentenced them to jail for one year with hard labor. Goldson may have been on the wrong side of history in opposing Belize’s inevitable march to full political independence from British Colonial rule. But he was a brave, determined almost stubborn man when it came to standing up against any compromise or appeasement with Guatemala. There was a long period in the 1960’s when Goldson single-handedly and alone in the National Assembly, where he was the only elected representative, represented opposition views to the ruling party. Right or wrong he stood for his beliefs; against the PUP and against the UDP (which betrayed him over the Maritime Areas law) Mr. Goldson was the alter ego of George Price. They together brought about our modern democracy and kept the flames of two-party parliamentary system alight. Last Friday, 25 July 2015, the birthday of this great patriot, democrat and National Hero, came and went in the country presently ruled by the UDP government. To the shame of that government and its leader, none visited Mr. Goldson’s grave. None said a word of remembrance. Or a word of thanks for a man without whom there would have been no UDP. “This was the unkindest cut of all” The great writer William Shakespeare wrote, “What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel! In appreciation how like a god!” “But yesterday the word of Caesar (Goldson) might Have stood against the world; now lies he there And none… to do him reverence”. SPEAKING OF GUATEMALA In an incredible development, the Foreign Minister of Guatemala at the invitation of the Belize government was a guest presenter at a public forum at the Bliss Institute. It was a love fest. Speaking on Channel 5, “Open Your Eyes” Tuesday morning Senior Carlos Raul Morales made the incredible statement about an incident in March this year. The incident is when a boat full of some 40 Belizeans was towed and taken from Sars-
toon River, from the Belize side, over to Livingston on the Guatemala side. They were taken against their will by the Guatemalan military. Dumped at Livingston and left to feed themselves and sleep overnight. Not knowing what would become of them. Guatemala’s explanation at the time sounded like they were accusing the captain of the boat of making a wrong turn and inadvertently passed through a creek on the river on Guatemala’s side. For this minor infraction they were treated with hostility. Speaking on the issue to Channel 5- Guatemala’s Foreign Minister said: - “Livingston… let me tell you that this is not an incident. What happened is some Belizean people from Punta Gorda, they visit this beautiful caye at the Sarstoon end and get into the sea. The boat was overloaded. There were lots of persons inside the boat and the sea was very rough. My authorities helped these people and took them to Livingston for the security of these people. Next day they cannot come back to P.G. because the sea was very rough. They did and overnight in Livingston and the next day Alexis Rosado (Belize Ambassador) visit the place and talk to the people and the people come back to Punta Gorda. This is not an incident…we need to be positive about our bi-lateral relation. There is not an incursion of Guatemalan army into Belize. My army and the BDF are working together…are trying to do our best”. We will not accuse the Foreign Minister of not telling the truth. He is saying what the Guatemalan army officials probably offered as their explanation for their hostile behavior to innocent Belizean passengers in a boat. It is the Guatemalan army that runs things when it comes to matters of this nature. Let us hear what is the explanation for the same Guatemalan army getting additional reinforcements and chasing our Coast Guards off Sarstoon Island on the 28 and 29 May? Because the Belize government dares not tell us the truth! MORA President of the National Trade Union Congress, who is also the President of the Belize Energy Workers Union, spoke like a true champion of workers. In television interviews last week we saw an emboldened and outspoken union leader. He covered a range of important issues such as the mounting and unsustainable debts that the government has been incurring. He spoke of the I.M.F recent exercise and their notes of caution to this country over unbudgeted spending and use of petro funds. Mora tackled the KHMH workers agitation for a salaries increase, stating that the Unions had included KHMH workers in their bargaining with government, and that government unilaterally removed the workers from the agreed increase. Mora also gave the lie to BIL (Belize Infrastructure Limited), a creation of the Prime Minister to get around established government Ministries and accounting procedures to the public. B.I.L is like a private company spending taxpayers’ money on party political infrastructure projects with little or no regards to development priorities. Mora spoke like a true workers champion and we hope he understand that some of his union colleagues do not share his commitments and are in fact agents of the UDP agenda. ROBERT MYLES DID THAT This cannot be true. That the Prime Minister unleashed such a vicious personal diatribe against the Maya leadership in the Village of Santa Cruz for detaining Rupert Myles in an unacceptable way. Myles is a “strapping” man of dark complexion. The Maya tied him up in an attempt to prevent him from escaping. Under Maya Alcalde jurisdiction and authority, the Maya have the right to arrest and detain persons.
2 AUG
2015 In fact and in law, any citizen can detain and arrest another person for violating any law in their presence. The government, not providing any place for Alcaldes to use as a holding cell and not providing any handcuffs, the poor Mayas had to use a string on Myles. The images of a black man being tied like Kunta Kinte in “Roots” were unacceptable. The Prime Minister, having lost a huge dose of popularity for bending down when Guatemala told Belize Coast Guard to get off Sarstoon Island, was uncharacteristically silent on this major national issue at the time. And he was in the middle of the Dangriga buy-election. So the tying up of Myles by the Maya was a perfect diversion. The media lapped up this diversionary tactic. Lo and behold, it has now emerged that Myles was a defiant newcomer to the Santa Cruz Village and was being advised and warned not to build on a sacred Maya Site-Uxbenka. Myles had desecrated the sacred site by shaving off the top of the mound and building a residential structure. He is also accused by the archeological authorities of destroying part of the entrance to the site. Following the Prime Minister’s irresponsible outburst and fake concern (he has been silent for seven years while rogue Police and goon squads in uniform violate every constitutional right of poor Belizeans including unlawfully killing some in Police Station cells), a Gestapo-type operation was launched against thirteen Mayas in Santa Cruz Village. They broke in their homes at 3:00 A.M. The Maya were roughed up and disrespected. Television cameras showed several being hauled to the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court without shirts for unlawful imprisonment of Myles. The Police were accused of roughing up the quiet and humble Maya women as well. One of those women, on advice, went to the Punta Gorda Police station to lodge a complaint and the Police chased her away. Now, last Friday Belizeans learned that Doctor John Morris, the Director of Archaelogy, confirmed that charges will brought against Rupert Myles for destruction of a sacred mound at the entrance of Uxbenka, where his house sits arrogantly on top of the flattened mound. According to Morris fifty percent of the mound has been denuded, meaning cleared away. Despite a Notice of Eviction by the lawful authority responsible to protect maya site, the Institute of of Archaeology, Myles not only remains living on top of the mound, but continues to conduct work on the site. It’s incredible but true. Readers will recall that in Orange Walk a high ranking UDP construction crony destroyed Noh Mul to use the material to fill streets. It took months to take legal action against him. The matter is still in court, two years after. SLAVERY ENDED 1ST AUGUST 1838 On 1st August 1838 slavery in Belize legally ended. The British government had passed a law earlier that on 1st August 1834 slaves were no longer to be treated as slaves but were to be on a special apprentice program where they were to work for free to their former slave masters. This apprentice program ended four years later on 1st August 1838. In the midst of the joys of regaining freedom these men and women would be under heavy anxiety as to how would they survive. No land, no jobs, no money. Most ended up working for their former slave masters for “slave wages”. And they had to buy their own food, clothes and other items as well as pay rent to live in a shack. We Creoles, children of slaves and white slave masters need to remove the chains and the slave mentality from off our minds. Look around and see how we are modern day slaves scrounging everyday just to survive. Forced to beg the new slave masters who look like us but have no love for us. PUP’s Radical Love National Executive Affirms National Convention Plans & Support for PUP Leader
Belize City, July 29, 2015 At a joint meeting of the PUP National Executive and Standard Bearers in March of this year, PUP Lake Independence Standard Bearer Cordel Hyde once described the evolution of the People’s United Party over the years as “radical love”. Hyde was borrowing a quote from U.S. civil rights activist Harry Belafonte to explain that while some get tense and even suffer anxiety over the history of the PUP, he and others respect it. The leaders attending that meeting, numbering 31 and representing a majority of the National Executive and Standard Bearers, expressed their full
support for PUP Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca and approved plans for a non-contested national convention to be held later that year. This week, in light of a recent letter written and signed by twelve PUP standard bearers, making three requests that include that the Party holds a national convention, the National Executive met with Standard Bearers once more on Wednesday. At that meeting the National Executive members and Standard Bearers heard presentations by two leaders who had signed the letter, Dr. Francis Smith (Pickstock) and Major Lloyd Jones (Belize Rural North). They were
open and candid about their concerns about the Party, and after an open-floor discussion, the National Executive took a firm position on the issues. The National Executive reiterated its support for a national convention in which the leadership of the Party will not be challenged. This is important as all indications are that the United Democratic Party will be calling early elections, with the country facing serious political and economic challenges under the Barrow Administration. The National Executive also supported plans for a national consultation series under the banner “Power to the People Tour” which will see our leaders
Salvadoran mother found dead at home
Mayorga left. The couple met in Belize and got married. But their four-year relationship was a rocky one, according to the victim’s family. Mejia moved to the apartment two weeks ago and because of the child, Mayorga visited regularly. The child was taken to the victim’s mother on Wednesday morning, before the discovery of the killing was made. Police officials say that they believe Mayorga is still in Belize City, and they have issued notices at all border points, hoping to find him for questioning.

Belize City, July 30, 2015 Belize City Police are seeking Honduran national Ulysis Mayorga for questioning in the murder of his wife, Merlin Elizabeth Herrera Mejia, a 21 year old Salvador national. Mejia was found lifeless inside a room in an apartment located on Morning Glory Street on the morning of Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Her throat had been slit and she had sustained other injuries. According to the victim’s mother, Maria Dora Alas de Mejia, the last person who saw her daughter alive was the husband. She said Mayorga had called her on Tuesday night, complaining that her daughter was drunk and that he would go for their 4 year old son. The apartment’s landlord has informed the family that Mayorga was seen arriving at the house, but they didn’t hear any strange noises or commotion. No one saw when
23 visiting communities to speak directly with our supporters. Finally, the leaders in attendance confirmed a proposal for the PUP to carry out a review of the National Executive and to consider suggestions to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. While the ruling UDP and their agents in the media have attempted to make the worst of the PUP’s internal matters, the truth is that the PUP is experiencing full-fledged democracy. The kind of democracy or as Hyde put it “radical love”, that sees leaders who care for their Party and are deeply engaged in the development of the Party, and a humble Leader that does not discriminate or attempt to oust those who disagree with him. Compare this to the UDP and their leader Dean Barrow and the very recent experience of Melvin Hulse and Delroy Cuthkelvin. Does anyone dare to stand up to Barrow’s chokehold leadership of the UDP?
