PM’s rhetoric lands serious economic blow Belize City, February 7th, 2012 The loose lips of Belize’s irresponsible Prime Minister have once again cost the nation, triggering another unnecessary international embarrassment. As if it weren’t enough that Belize has virtually scared away prospective investors and is known as the murder
capital of the region under the Barrow Administration, Prime Minister Dean Barrow has given the nation yet another black-eye by sending off the wrong signal regarding Belize’s commitment to meeting its debt obligations. In his election announcement on January 31st, Barrow uttered that his administration would seek “clear in-
structions” from the electorate “to do something about the superbond”. This spun Belize’s credit market into chaos and confusion, and the result was a further blow to Belize’s already debilitated economic outlook. In an almost swift response from wary agencies, Belize’s credit rating was lowered to junk status.
