IMPRESSIVE RECOVERY

SAYS THE IMF TEAM

“Après moi le déluge “ vomited Dean Barrow to an impromptu question in 2020 about how he is handling the economy. Little did Barrow realize that one year later he would be grieving an “IMPRESSIVE” turnaround by the planBelize government. Dean Barrow was NOT doing any handling...he went beyond laissez faire with his incompetence. He was differing the economy to the PUP. PlanBelize was ready to save the people from the brink of economic disaster.

IMPRESSIVE RECOVERY SAYS THE IMF TEAM

Continued from page 1 In fact, the coronavirus allowed Barrow’s UDP rank incompetence to reach to the most roughshod level of corruption known to man. You name the sector and it was fleeced, skinned, gutted and deboned by the UDP. Barrow left Belize’s economy comatose. Multiple quarters of contraction before and after the election were proof to the cataclysmic effect of a criminal medley of nonfeasance, malfeasance and outright lawlessness that wreaked havoc on Belize. Barrow left his last House meeting without adjourning the sitting and no one on the UDP side who could even read...this continues for the 4 UDP in parliament today. Rebuilding Belize and putting our nation on a path of fiscal and economic resiliency is planBelize’s immediate goal. We are well on our way but we cannot let up. The effort continues. Prime Minister Briceño along with management team concluded a virtual meeting with the IMF Article 4 Mission Team. These visits by the IMF are annually scheduled with nations of our region. This virtual encounter concluded the mission as the IMF presented the results of its technical meetings with the Belize public and private sector. “We are happy to note that the meeting was positive and the results will be published in short order by the IMF.” PM Briceño via social media. That positive overtone of the consultative meetings with the IMF are grounded in real economic figures that attest to a swift and robust economic turnaround. The IMF mission leader made reference to the positive outcomes of the country’s positive growth over past financial year where GDP was projected to have grown by 12.5% in 2021 an expected to continue with 6.5% in 2022. Belizeans were back to work as unemployment decreased from 13.7% to 9.2%. Debt management was marked with the extinction of the Super Bond and the confidence of new partners like The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund for Nature and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Primary fiscal balance was projected to increase from negative 8.5% of GDP in 2020 to a positive growth of 1.5% of GDP in 2021. Prime Minister John Briceño, during which one of the officials of that institution commended the government. “The team leader said, you know, he has never seen any country accomplish what we have, and I wrote down what he said word by word and I kind of repeated [it] and he said, “Yes, you can repeat it,” of how we have managed to turn things around in such a short 12 months,” Mr Briceño told reporters on Wednesday following his meeting with that body. But aside from the IMF’s commendation, the Statistical Institute of Belize has also reported that Belize’s economy continued along a path of continued growth during the fourth quarter of

2021. SIB, at its most recent press conference the same day, reported that the economy grew by 4.1%, which converts to $84 million, compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, when our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) plummeted by over 16%. S.I.B. technicians stated that the tertiary category was responsible for the most significant increase, showing a 22.1% growth, or $75.6 million in the last quarter of 2021. The hotel and retail trade sector in that category recorded a 31.8% increase and the hotel and restaurant sector recorded a $19.4 million increase, over the fourth quarter of 2020. This achievement was attributed to the healthy rebound that the tourism industry has shown, particularly in cruise arrivals. And while Belize continues to import much more than we export, the sugar and animal feed sectors also showed notable increases in our exports. For reasons beyond the control of the government, the cost of living recorded a 4% increase last month. Exorbitant shipping costs, fuel prices globally, and transportation are only three of the factors that continue to affect the prices of goods. The cost of living was at its highest in Orange Walk at nearly 6%. The Prime Minister explained that to stem the high inflation rate, producing more food for our consumption would be key. “We import most of our food products. What we have to start to do is grow more of what we eat and eat what we grow. But we have to look at how best we could handle that. Tomorrow (Thursday) the Cabinet is meeting on a retreat to discuss, I think, about four topics. One of them is the cost of living - what is it that can be done. There is no silver bullet, there is no easy answer and we will see what we can come up with. I can tell you that we will do everything possible to try to manage that,” the PM assured. And while the Cabinet discusses how government can create an ease on the cost of living, the Prime Minister also made one more pledge to try to ease the pinch on the pockets of Belize’s public officers. During his meeting with the IMF, he underscored the point that our accomplishment of remarkable economic growth has to be largely attributed to the sacrifice and hard work on the part of public officers. PM Briceño indicated that the government has entered into negotiations with union leaders to discuss reinstating the ten percent salary that they gave up as a part of the joint national effort to take our economy out of the brink of collapse a little over a year ago. The Prime Minister Briceño said he felt that his government will be able to “come up with a compromise that everybody can live with.” All this speak to a spectacular economic rebound that sets the foundation for our government’s Plan Belize agenda and the ability to share the benefits with all Belizeans in the form of more and better services.

IMPRESSIVE RECOVERY

EU AMBASSADOR AGREES Prime Minister John Briceño received from Her Excellency Marianne Van Steen of the European Union a new 17Million Euro Multiannual Indicative Programme for Cooperation between Belize and European Union. The new country agreement includes three priority areas. Green growth and sustainable socio-economic development is Priority Area 1 to work with our southern districts in areas of sustainable management of natural resources, environmental preservation, rural transformation, income generation and inclusion of indigenous commu-

nities into the social fabric. Priority Area 2 is Regional Integration and Border Management. Priority Area 3 looks at strengthening Belize/EU Relations and working with national civil society agencies across multiple sectors. The programme is designed to advance the activities of the Government of Belize in alleviating rural poverty in Belize. This first allocation may be increased after a mid-term review in 2024. #Belize #EU #collaboration H.E. Van Steen was on a whirlwind visit where she like the IMF virtual team was impressed at every inauguration and event. Here are a few.

New Roaring Creek Bridge and 20mls of GPHighway

February 21, 2022 - Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize, together with Ramiro López Ghio, country representative for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and H.E. Marianne Van Steen, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Belize, inaugurated the newly built Roaring Creek Bridge, as well as 32.5 kilometers of the George Price Highway, stretching across eight western communities and ending at Santa Elena, Cayo District. The George Price Highway Rehabilitation Project, undertaken by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, rehabilitated the most deteriorated segment of one of Belize’s principal thoroughfares. It has since been upgraded to international standards, improving and ensuring connectivity between the central, northern, and southern parts of the country. The objective is to reduce transport costs, as well as the road’s vulnerability to flooding and other natural disasters, making it more resilient to climate change. Additionally, the George Price Highway Rehabilitation Project included the construction of the Roaring Creek Bridge. The bridge and the two sections of highway were constructed by local contractors under the supervision of IMC Engineering, a UK-based company. The bridge features two lanes for vehicular traffic, as well as two pedestrian paths, and rises twelve feet above the previous structure.

Delivering the keynote address, Prime Minister Briceño said, “Connectivity in these times is a necessity, not only for the movement of people but for trade. As Belize starts to strengthen its ties with Central America, including Guatemala, our neighbor, this highway is going to be playing an even more critical role in facilitating trade Continued on page 5

t is sometimes difficult to differentiate between a friend and a foe. This is particularly true when the foe mimics the behaviour of a friend. These are known as frenemies, and if you know...well you just know. ASR/BSI and the people of Northern Belize have a shared history spanning decades. The mill and the Sugarcane Industry have become woven into the very fabric of that region’s culture, traditions and very way of life. Over the course of this sometimes very tumultuous relationship, there have been times like now where it has come to a head. Perhaps the most notorious standoff has resulted in the death of Atanacio Gutierrez which occurred during the last administration. His death was a consequence of friendly fire and at the hands of those agents sworn to protect, serve and defend Belizeans. The violent retaliation came from a government that did not care about the cane farmers protesting and defending their livelihood Big businesses in Belize have been lulled into complacency and a severe feeling of entitlement as the past government catered to their every whim. Concessions and fiscal incentives, as well as union-busting, were hallmarks of the modus operandi in the past. The ASR/BSI group has recently decided to take advantage of this new administration’s indemnity clause negotiated during the recent protest; they have decided to sue the cane farmers. The Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño himself came to lead discussions at the negotiating table to ensure that the harvest season would start. He and Minister Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai were present in the negotiations to make it happen. This was quite a departure from the glaring absence of any government officials in the past and is representative of the involvement and commitment of the Briceño administration. The ASR/BSI group have come in the most underhanded way now to claim damages and losses. This can only be construed as acting in very bad faith while conducting discussions to resolve differences. The ASR/BSI group is now attempting to hold the entire country at ransom! There is quite a stretch between coming to the table to discuss and coming to the table to try and strong-arm the Belizean people and government in order to increase your profits at our expense. This group benefits from duty and tax concessions. These benefits are not available to our very own farmers. These concessions furthermore, gives them an unfair advantage over our own Belizean farmers. How is it now possible that they would turn around and try to bite the very hands that feed them? They come now wanting to negotiate, feeling that they have the upper hand holding the lawsuit over our heads. No sir! This must not be allowed! Take back our tax concessions, ASR/BSI does not need them. We will not increase their profits at our expense so that they can turn around and pay expensive lawyers to oppress us. They must pay for the stand over cane in the fields. They must be held accountable for the damage to our environment and ecosystem. They must be made to pay for the clean-up. The only good thing about the fact that the claws finally came out is that we now know who is finally friend and who is foe.

AMIENEMIGOS

¡No, señor!

GOB continues to live up to its commitment to consult and dialogue with unions 1. British Aerospace BAE 125 800 A SN 258061: and other stake holders. On February 23...the government team of Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde, Minister of Public Service Hon. Henry Usher and Minister Francis Fonseca met with the representatives of the Unions namely the Public Service Union, the Belize National Teacher’s Union and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers. The immediate objective was to make sure that it was clear that the government will follow through with informing the Union on the financial affairs of the country. The Prime Minister has pronounced on more than one occasion his intention to reinstate the 10 percent cut that was shared in mid-2021 as a part of sharing the economic burden the UDP has imposed on the country. The Unions at that time had taken to peaceful demonstrations and strike actions but the reality of the economic situation 2. Piper Chyenne Turbo Prop was that action was necessary. The International Monetary Fund had a very, very low projection for Belize’s Gross Domestic Product. This projection, they had to pull back as Belize has rebounded way beyond expert expectations. EU AMBASSADOR AGREES Continued from page 2 from one country to the next.” In his remarks, Ramiro López Ghio said, “The rehabilitation of this important highway is a relevant achievement for the people of Belize, since it improves regional integration, enables sustainable and inclusive economic growth, facilitates gender equality and diversity, and strengthens in the best ways possible, important aspects of Climate Change resilience, as it is envisioned in the Inter-American Development Bank’s Vision 2025.” “The new Roaring Creek Bridge is a strong symbol as a bridge is always a way to bring people closer together. The bridge does not only

connect Belmopan with San Ignacio and Belize City, it also further connects Belize to Central America and may open up larger trade flows which will be beneficial for Belize and the region. Similarly, the Roaring Creek Bridge has brought closer together the Government of Belize, the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Union for a strengthened partnership and stronger friendships,” noted Ambassador Van Steen. The project was funded by the Government of Belize, the IDB, and the EU through the Caribbean Investment Facility. The area representative and Infrastructure minister Julius Espar was present at the ceremony.

CARICOM Statement on the Situation in Ukraine

As Belize gets set to host and chair the Thirty-Third Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government and the Fourth CARICOM-SICA Summit the community puts out this statement condemning the Ukraine invasion by Russia. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) strongly condemns the military attacks and invasion of Ukraine by The Russian Federation and calls for the immediate and complete withdrawal of the military presence and cessation of any further actions that may intensify the current perilous situation in that country. The recognition by The Russian Federation of the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk represents a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. The hostilities against Ukraine go counter to the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of another sovereign state and the prohibition on the threat or use of force, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, which are the bedrock of this Community. CARICOM maintains that the principles of universal respect and adherence to these norms and principles of international law are fundamental to the maintenance of the international system and global peace and security. THE BELIZE TIMES

UDP Medium in Political Closet

The Belize Times is, according to public knowledge, an arm of the People’s United Party. Mainstream media are mostly independent. There is one media house that hides in the political closet and launches open attacks against the PUP-led government. This is a UDP medium which feigns at being independent to grab all the advertising dollars possible. In other words, get paid to launch political salvoes all under the guise of being independent...and thus the problem being pointed at here. Fake profiles on Facebook and this UDP-trustee mouthpiece pretending to be independent deserve the same treatment—they should be unfriended and blocked if they do not come clean. The media was invited to a consultation on a new Defamation Bill which seeks, among other things, to reel in the new social media into the fray of defamatory actions that bear legal consequences. The already mentioned UDP media was there with the best of his sheep’s wool over his true fox self. These questions came to mind. Is being subliminally partisan while shamelessly being an independent imposter illegal? ...an abuse of public trust? ...disqualifies you from craved advertisement dollars? Who owns every media house should be a matter of open information? Laws in Belize are drafted by the Attorney General ‘s office upon a request as the need is seen. This need is arrived at via the political leaders, representatives of the country who in general hold Ministries. One of these persons is the Prime Minister of the country who now is John Briceño. PM Briceño directs one of his cabinet ministers to place the bill drafted by the AG’s office into process. This process involves the bill tabled at a House of Representatives sitting and then, read. A decision is made to read the bill for one time or all three times on the same day. After a first reading, some bills are taken to public committee thus all three readings are not all in the same day. This sector of the public that is directly affected can attend and the floor will be open to suggestions, clarifications and, really, for amendments. As said, the Clerk of the House of Representatives invited the public to a consultation for the newly proposed Defamation bill. It is funny how the UDP media again attended and asked the most questions, yet, in the same breath, questions

why they were not consulted. This is like one going to the wedding reception, getting drunk, and still cry foul as to why one was not invited. Lucky for this imposter media house, the planBelize government allows the voice of everyone to be heard even theirs. Belizeans in droves listen to their editorials masked as news but Belizeans are smart and understand it is a UDP circus. There is a place for all under the PUP. Guess which media house tried desperately to continue the 13-year reign of terror of the UDP.

Guess which circus media house was ignored in droves by the people of Belize. The UDP media was ignored in 2018 Belize City Council and Orange Walk Council and Corozal Town Council elections. The UDP media was ignored in June 2019 Village Council Elections. (110 to 70) The UDP media was dramatically ignored in November 2020 General Elections. (26 to 4 or 5) This same UDP media was totally ignored in the March 2021 Municipal Elections. (65 to 2) Today, they continue in their hardened ways of undermining the public trust in being a ‘Chicken Little’ 7 days of the week on TV and social media. Could

it be that is why they are afraid of the defamation bill? Stop faking at being independent. The truth shall set you free.

Discussing establishment of the Belize Women Parliamentarians Caucus The women parliamentarians of the National Assembly convened a meeting earlier this week to discuss the establishment of the Belize Women Parliamentarians Caucus. The idea received overwhelming support by the women parliamentarians of the House of Representatives and the Senate. They have committed to working towards establishing a formal structure of the caucus as well as engaging with the Commonwealth Parliamentarians Association and ParlAmericas organizations for technical assistance in its establishment. A Women Parliamentarians Caucus is a format used in parliaments to create a space for women parliamentarians from different political parties to unite in solidarity in championing and promoting women empowerment, advocating for policy and legislative priorities for women, strengthening women’s voices in parliaments, encouraging gender perspectives in the day-today operations of the parliament, and raising awareness of the importance of gender equality and inclusion in the parliament. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Valerie Woods stated, “Given the fact that this is the first time we have so many women in parliament, it is timely that Belize considers this establishment as has occurred in other parliaments in our region. There are common objectives, despite differences in political affiliations or views that a multipartisan, bicameral caucus can rally around and support. While the establishment of such caucuses is almost often led by women, it does not exclude the engagement of the men in parliament. On the contrary, the support by male colleagues in parliament is critical to address gender equality issues in parliament.” President of the Senate, Hon. Carolyn Trench-Sandiford added, “It is important that the gender perspective in development issues is considered, and a women’s caucus is a tool that is used in parliaments to ensure that decision making considers this and amplifies the call for our women parliamentarians’ voices to be heard.” This was the initial meeting of the women parliamentarians. Present at the first meeting were Hon. Valerie Woods, Hon. Carolyn Trench-Sandiford, Hon. Dolores BalderamosGarcia, Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos, Hon. Isabel Bennett, Hon. Elena Smith, Hon. Sheena Pitts, and Hon. Erica Jang. Currently, Belize has a total of four women elected to the House of Representatives, four women appointed as Senators, and two women serving as presiding officers. The total number of parliamentarians in the National Assembly (both chambers), including the presiding officers, is 46. Collectively, women parliamentarians account for 22% of the National Assembly. While this is the greatest number of women serving in parliament in the history of Belize, women are still a minority in parliament. Moving forward, the women parliamentarians will be meeting with colleagues in the region who have established similar caucuses to share experiences and guidelines for the establishment, effective engagement, success, and sustainability of a women parliamentarians’ caucus.

PlanBelize Fixing the Hotbed of UDP Corruption

One Constituency at a Time – OW South Visited In the Orange Walk South constituency, Minister of Natural Resources, Hon Cordel Hyde and his team conducted land clinics to help regularize the system. Over the two-day period, almost 1,000 persons were facilitated, though Orange Walk South Area Representative, Hon Abelardo Mai has admitted that there are thousands more people in the constituency who need the service. “This is a result of 13 years of “pileup” of our people’s lands documents!” Hon Mai wrote of the UDP abandonment on his Facebook page. The success in Orange Walk was last seen in Belize Rural Central, Corozal Bay, and other constituencies. If the plight that the people of Bella Vista Village in Toledo is any indication, the lands minister and his staff are in for many more long hours of work correcting erroneous duplications that are frustrating not only the process but the hundreds of people who are caught in the middle. This week, residents of Bella Vista village, Toledo East, headed to Belmopan to seek some way forward in solving the problems they have found themselves in. It turns out that a lot of the villagers have been holding either letters or receipts or both, from a former self-appointed village lands committee chairman that led a to land demarcation and a distribution system riddled with errors. This rendered in some cases as many as three persons having occupancy rights to the same pieces of land! A few of the villagers have complained that multiple surveys have left the plot of land they were assigned either in the middle of a road or infringing on another parcel that has been assigned to someone else. As if this is not bad enough, what compounds the problem is that many of these people have been farming the land they thought was theirs or building their homes on the plot they got from years ago, until recently when other villagers have come forth holding letters and receipts for the developed pieces of land. Chairlady of Bella Vista, Oneida Hernandez explained that “You don’t need a recommendation from an area representative, or any chairperson of the community or the village or from the chairperson of lands and lots committee in the area. That leads to a lot of problems in the sense that when you go and apply, you don’t know whose land that is. So sometimes you get to have three owners to the land,” Hernandez said, suggesting that this gives the people with cash in hand the advantage over the ones who may have been occupying the land but don’t readily have the money to purchase. Bella Vista’s former Village Council Lots Committee Chairman, Salvador Ack (UDP) said that because under the UDP there were no surveyors employed by the government, they had to commission private surveyors who demarcated the parcels of land based on how quickly people paid and then Ack would issue the receipt of payment for the survey. Ack stopped short of saying that he and his committee left the broken system in the hands of the previous government. The hot mess they created is clear to be seen now. Paul Thompson, who is the Chief of Staff for Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Cordel Hyde, has gone public to indicate that indeed, the problem was created under the UDP regime when they allowed these local land committees to go ahead and randomly issue land without having authentic surveys done. Now, a task force has been directed to investigate the problem and to come up with solutions that will benefit the people who genuinely have interests to own and develop the land they have been occupying or developing. When it comes to land, patience is paramount— the mobile clinic is coming and thereafter there will be follow through. Note that Min. Hyde and the Briceño administration are working on the land situation from November 12, 2020. This is not an election gimmick; it is the PUP administration following their North Star, PlanBelize—Serving the people so that Belize can work for them. Everybody will win in due time.

THE BELIZE TIMES Inauguration of Hol Chan Marine Station

Address by Hon. Andre Perez Area Representative and Min. of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation Please allow me to extend a warm San Pedro “Good morning” to everyone present here this morning. Prime Minister, thank you for making this special trip to San Pedro, a true indication of your confidence and support for the important work of Hol Chan and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation. Thank you for being a true friend of San Pedro. For all others visiting, welcome to la Isla Bonita. To those of us that are blessed and privileged to call San Pedro home, thank you for joining us today for such an exciting and important occasion. As the Minister responsible for all Marine Protected Areas in Belize it is truly an honor and privilege to be able to tell the Hol Chan story. Like a phoenix, the Hol Chan that we met just a year and 3 months ago, has risen out of the ashes of financial mismanagement and neglect to now being a stellar example of a financially stable and thriving marine protected area. Today, Hol Chan is recognized for its innovative approach to protected area management including important contributions to tourism, conservation, education and research. We are truly encouraged and motivated to know that the new Blue Economy Framework will have the important participation of important partners such as Hol Chan and, of course, all others involved in the daily work of protecting our blue capital. As we inaugurate this new marine station, we know we are increasing enforcement, surveillance, and also enhancing the services we provide to our visitors at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Together, we will continue to showcase the beauty of our country in a manner that is

environmentally responsible but also lucrative to our hard-working people that depend on our blue space and resources for their sustenance. This is bringing back Belize… the Blue Economy way! Congratulations Hol Chan! Congratulations San Pedro! Thank you!

THE BELIZE TIMES

THINK ABOUT IT LOGGING LICENSES-CONSULT OR CONSENT Our Maya brothers and sisters in the rural areas of Toledo are entitled to be the owners of their lands. Lands they have lived and worked on for generations. The highest Court in the region and over Belize has upheld their rights to their community/communal lands. So be it. There will be challenges and stumbling blocks along the way. That is to be expected. Patience and good faith as we all go forward. The rest of Belizeans are poorly informed, and very-poorly educated about this important issue of communal land ownerships. Sad to say the hosts of radio and television shows share in this ignorance of the law and the facts. This is lamentable. There is much work to be done. The recent approval of four logging business for the Barranco Village forests throws up some serious issues. Villagers and communities should be the main beneficiaries of the resources of their land and lands adjoining their villages. This means logging licenses should be granted in the name of the elected village council, on behalf of the villagers. This will require the department of co-operatives to organize a logging cooperative in the villages with all the necessary safeguards against fraud, theft, waste and hustling. Persons wishing to buy logs, will be required to purchase through the village cooperative. Books, accounts, bank statements, everything is to be made available to the villagers at regular meetings. The Cooperative Department will be responsible for checks and balances and to see that villagers are fully informed. Profits are to be shared among all the members of the logging cooperative in the village. If it is a big village and profits are small, then projects like parks, playgrounds, education, sports, music programs and scholarships are to benefit from the sale of logs. Belize has 60 percent of its population struggling with poverty. The old system is that a few make money from logs and the majority get nothing. Time for new thinking. The ministry responsible for forests and logging must start to inform the nation that in 3 years’ time no more logs are to be exported from Belize. We will start a new high-end project. We will make chairs and table, beds and doors and souvenirs from our beautiful timbers. If you google the price of rosewood bed and furniture, you will drop off your seat and be angry at those who are selling our logs for cheap, when the finished furniture is ten times more valuable. TANGA FUNERAL BIGGER THAN ESQUIVEL’s Alleged gang figure and the girls dem sugar, Tanga was buried three weeks ago. Onlookers lined the route and a crowd gathered at the cemetery. The event was streamed live, over ten thousand viewers. Manuel Esquivel, a two times Prime Minister, carrying the mark of the former colonial masters - Right Honourable, was buried last week. It was even made a state funeral. A handful of persons bothered. Ain’t that a “b” (b for burial). “WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE” That’s what Karl Marx was saying way back then. Workers of Belize may want to think about it. There is another million dollars lawsuit coming from employees against those whom they treat like employees. BSI/ASR has sued the cane farmers for one million dollars they say the cane farmers disruption of cane delivery has cost them. If we were conspiracy theorists, we would say this seems to be coordinated with the employers of the Port Authority which just weeks ago filed a million dollars law suit against the stevedores who went on a few days strike a few weeks ago. Indeed, the conspiracy would need to include a further development just this week. The Port Authority is asking the Supreme Court to Order the government not to pay the stevedores the amount of one and a half million dollars which the government is to gift the stevedores for an old debt owed them when the Port was privatized. This request is an urgent application to the Supreme Court. It is an application for an injunction. An injunction is an Order by a Court which seeks to stop someone from doing something. In this case it is to stop the government from handing over the one and a half million dollars to the stevedores through their Union. The reason the Port wants the Court to Order the government to hold the money, is because if the government pays the money to the stevedores, the Port cannot collect anything if they win their law suit. The Port would not be able to collect be-

17

cause neither the stevedores or their Union leaders have money to pay. The conspiracy theory would have to include a weird letter sent to the Prime Minister by the Chamber of Commerce. This unprecedented letter scolded the Prime Minister and warned him for not championing the cause of BSI and the Port when they faced cañeros and stevedores industrial action. The Prime Minister’s response to the Chamber was a blistering, blitzkrieg rebuttal. Kudos to the Prime Minister. We are alarmed at the double law suits, each for a million dollars. They are first of their kind. They do represent an attack against workers. And yes, employers have rights, but don’t workers have rights too? We are looking at the other workers unions in Belize and we are wondering if they appreciate what is unfolding from these two law suits. Today for cane farmers and stevedores, tomorrow for you. First, they came for the journalists and activists and I didn’t speak out because I was none of these types. Then, they came for the Maya, Garinagu and Cruffy but I still didn’t bother myself because I was none of those. Then they came for the workers and the unions. And still, I kept silent because I didn’t get the same. And then they came for me and there was no one to speak up, for there was no one left who could speak up. MURDER ON ALBERT STREET A mere one hundred feet from the law firm of the former Prime Minister, a murder took place in broad daylight. Albert Street is Belize City’s main shopping area. It starts at the Swing Bridge. On the left is the Belize Bank, the Park and then Brodie’s. On the right is Augusto Quan, a large Indian store, then William Quan, Hofius and Heritage Bank. On the left, two more banks, Belize Bank Corporation and Atlantic Bank; and on both sides, rows of stores continue. At the corner of Albert Street and Dean Street, is channel 7. At the next corner of Albert Street and South Street is Wesley Church. Wesley Infant School is opposite the Church, skip the Guerra’s shop and then Ellis Arnold law firm, then follows the former enclave of the industrious Pitts family of yesteryear fame and loyal and Patriotic Order of the Baymen. Their open yard is a new experiment to provide jobs in the car wash business. Young Lejean Rhamdas stopped his vehicle for a brief conversation with someone on the Street in front of the car wash on Friday 18th February, mid-morning. The 25-year-old was assassinated in full view of several onlookers. This can’t be a coincidence. A young man stops briefly on Albert Street in broad daylight, and with the quickness assassins emerge and he is pumped full of hot lead. Only three weeks ago, Winston James a.k.a Tanga drove his vehicle on west canal Street, turned at tiny Prince Street bridge and met a hail of bullets. There has to be much more surveillance cameras on the killing Streets of Belize City. This can’t continue, mein. RECALL SISTA B Can we pause for a moment, and appreciate the gravity of what is going on in front of our face? On 11th November 2020 general elections were held. The vast majority of Belizeans voted out the UDP and voted for a change. Only five UDP out of thirty-one were also to get elected, of those five, two are close family to the outgoing Prime Minister. One is his son; the other is his sister. The sister has been in the Queen’s Square constituency for donkey’s years, at least for thirty years. There is no constituency office - there is no constituency secretary. The one lady walks around and tends to the UDP supporters. PUPs living in the area are treated like sh.... The sister has been elected to the House of Representatives. We are informed she never attends meetings, which are usually once a month. It is one year three months since she got the office. Not a single contribution to any of the national issues raised in the House. Not a single explanation offered to the nation for the multitude of absences. This is unacceptable. This is not just monstrous disrespect to the people of Queen’s Square. This is an attack and an underrunning of Parliamentary democracy. It is to be condemned and rejected. Where are the women’s organizations and spokespersons who champion for women to be in politics? Why are we hearing nothing about this? Sista B deserves to be chastised. She should be disciplined. She should be called upon to vacate the seat. This is disrespect to the maximum. The law offers an opportunity to do something. It is the recall of a person who has betrayed the high requirements of the office. Could Allan Pollard, a new comer who reduced Queen’s Square thousand plus majority of votes for UDP to a handful for Pollard in the 11th November election? consider getting Wendy Castillo and her formidable campaign skills to start a recall petition?

THE BELIZE TIMES

OF THIS AND THAT 22.02.2022 Tuesday was special. It was the twenty second day. It was the second month. It was twenty twenty-two. That is a lot of two’s. There is a big word for this. It is palindrome. It is also an ambigram. You can read it from left to right. Right to left and upside down. That is cool. Fire emoji. Belize loves numbers. We love boledo. Two, twenty and ought two is rake. Don’t buy the twenty two backway and front way. Or you will lose. Tell Brads free up the ‘ought’ two. OSTRICH IN STEAK SAUCE The national bird is chicken. Check all chiney. Check around 6:00pm. Noon too. Sorry toucan. Not sorry. Toucan in steak sauce? No. Hell no. But there is a new bird. It is from Africa. It is the Ostrich. It is big. It cannot fly. It is fast though. It can run 45 miles an hour. Just don’t let them get away. There is a controversy. The birds are in Belize. I hear the meat is nice. It tastes like beef. Steak. It is a lot of meat. They can weigh 330 lbs. Ostridge tamales. Pibil Ostrich. Ostrich Lo Mien. How about Ostrich in steak sauce? The baby egg is good too. Or so they say. It is huge. It weighs 3lbs. PEPPER QUEEN There is onion sauce. There is tabasco sauce. It makes food taste good. Spice is good. Spicy is better. Belize is king of the pepper sauce. There is even a song. It is called habanero by Gilharry 7. Marie Sharp is the thing. It is made in Stann Creek. It went to Dubai. That is far. It won a contest. The contest was the 2022 Hot Sauce Challenge. It beat everything else. Flavor. It is on a roll. It won in Germany too. That was the BBQ festival. It is in the Hot Sauce Hall of Fame. That is a real thing. It is best on shrimp ramen. With lime. Big up the Williams family. Ms. Marie too. PARKING METERS Respect to Belize City Council. They are doing big things. Parking meters are coming to Belize. We only see them in movies. Albert Street is stepping up. Daley Street and Queen Street too. This is first world things. Let us see what happens. They tried to put automatic meters before. It was at the airport. Some people did not like it. It was done by a machine. You needed exact money. Some people said they had no change. A human is back in the booth. Let us see if Belize is ready. Some say it is about time. Big up. RUTA MAYA Kevin Bernard is a star. He is opening things. He is a smart man. Please move the curfew. If no, then thanks for Ruta Maya. This is a big race. It is in dorey. Canoe they call it. Fancy ones. It is big. Big like the Cross country cycling classic. Cross country by river. It is from Hawkesworth to Belcan Bridge. The idea came from Richard Harrison. He was a big deal. A PUP from Cayo. Genius of a man. He passed away. Huge loss to Belize. His idea lives forever. Cruffy love this race. They party. On the river banks. Belikin and bbq. Music and jokes. People are tired. They want to get out. They have to do so responsibly. Feels good. Feels good to see some normal things. God mek this “pawn demic” done. We miss jouvert. NO SHAME Alfonso Noble was drunk. He killed a man. He was driving. Sedi Driver killed a man. He was driving. Dorian Pakeman killed a man. He was driving. Shyne almost killed a lady. He is proud. He is proud that he went to jail. Shyne kicked his wife. In her back. So she said. Shyne said something else. He said he shot at police. He called women, bitches. Check his song. What a guy. Poor Tracey. She has the personality of wet socks. Shyne keeps insulting her. Sad. They made Saldivar resign. He took campaign money. Bags. This is a running joke. No pun intended. TWANG Notice. Shyne in America is different. He yanks. When he is in Belize he tries to talk a fake creole. He fooled me. BEWARE Did you notice? Jules is a UDP. That is ok. He pretends to be independent. He is not. He was collecting from the UDP. He got contracts. The contracts were for advertisements. Some were from BTL. His father was in charge of BTL. Jules is attacking the PUP. He has a plan. It has structure. Watch this. He starts with Monday Morning Beef. This is Channel 7 version of Fuss thing da mawnin. Jules is Juliet. The other two are Alfonso and Joe Bradley. He has Uncut. This is on Wednesday. This is a UDP tool. He tries to crucify PUP. Them and people he don’t like. Patrick, John and the Carcass for Change too. Then every six o’clock. He does it. He editorializes the news. Spins. He makes everything negative. He is negative. Political. Toxic. Bitter. That is not journalism. It is propaganda. Jules is UDP. Let us stop pretending. It is out of hand. He is mean. Insulting. Abusive. Accountability is a must. Campaign for the UDP in the name of media? That is something else. He lives to attack the PUP. Every day. Every way. MIA MOTLEY Mia Motley is a giant. She is from Barbados. She is Prime Minister. She is like Mr. Price. Her Party won every seat. There is no opposition. Barbados is little England. Surprise. They will separate from the Queen. Bye GG. Mia is fearless. She is real. She stood up to the big man. Belize regards Russia’s recognition of Luhansk and Donetsk as a violation of international law. The heavy machinery will support the Council’s work in sanitation, maintenance, as well as infrastructure works in the coming

OUT

!

Dear Editor, I have noticed that Belize is a jail to Shyne; Mesopotamia has Zoom representation. On the heels of faking his support for a domestic violence motion and any desire to be in Belize, Shineless Barrow jumps onto the first available plane to get out of the country he was deported from. Shyne Barrow considers Belize a jail. Shyne feels locked up in Belize. Mesop is his ‘Get out of Jail’ card? Shyne understood that the Michael Finnegan constituency was a carbon copy of Queen’s Square and Albert. Abusing of the transfer period, and abusing of their power influence for hiring and firing into the public service, the corrupt UDP packed up these constituency voters list with UDP inclined voters from all over the country. The UDP packed relative’s homes and office spaces with voters who in most cases have never even step foot into these southside constituencies. But they transferred into them. Some might not even know where is their official “home.” So Shyne, knowing that the balance to a win in Mesopotamia already has a heavy thumb on the scale almost guaranteeing a win, accepted to run. No convention nor campaigning needed just like his estranged father in Queen Square. So even as the whole country voted for kicking out the pervasively Barrow-UDP Party, two Barrows and two other Southsiders managed to kick themselves back into the National Assembly via Sunday Dinna, Public Service jobs, and fraudulent transfers taking advantage of the honesty that the registration process assumes its honest citizens will follow. As this paper has said many times, the UDP corrupts anything they meet…I believe that Editor. Now we are that they are corrupting the notion of a Leader of Opposition that calls himself the leader of the House of Representatives. He swore over a King James version of the Bible, and corrupted the honesty of the grit that office deserves. The UDP accepted him as leader since for them it is Ok for himself to be a woman abuser, and it is UDP ok for Shyne to drink on a Drink Champs show and make a chimp of himself by stating that he is in a committee that legalized ‘WEED’ in Belize. Fact: that bill is still in process…but he lied to his gullible US friends. Is that Nelson Mandela like? NO...Mandela was imprisoned not for shooting a female in the face. Mandela stood against Apartheid. We fully understand that Shyne does not comprehend that. Shyne only wishes to attempt to keep a semblance of a face in the hiphop arena. If Shyne could stay in the USA, he would love to complete his first and only term in Mesop via Zoom. For Shyne it is Shyne first, Shyne second and Shyne forever. Maybe Shyne has Barrow 4th. At least, in the UDP, it is UDP first. True Mesop Voter

days and months. The acquisition of the heavy machinery comes as a result of improved financial management at the Council which has seen resources utilized for priority needs. The new machinery will help the Council save resources, as previously the Council has relied on machinery rental. Even municipal bodies contribute to the planBelize spirit of making Belize work for everyone.
