“As a nation we have kept the faith, from adult suffrage in 1958 to this day. We have kept Belizean democracy strong. So that once we bear witness to the peaceful transfer of authority from one administration to another. As we say, ‘the people have spoken.’ Long live democracy.” – Now Prime Minister John Briceño at the Victory Speech on Election Night ‘Ganamos todos’…we all won at the 11th November Belize 2020 General Elections… this winning includes even the electorate that voted for the United Democratic Party and for the 3rd Parties and Independents. The world can once more look at Belize and be amazed at how in one day we can transition to another government. Surely, that process can be improved but the peace and tranquility that is instilled from the results of our life-altering election is really a testament to the Belizean desire for peaceful progress. The people of Belize registered a historic 26 to 5 pummelling of the embattled government who was way past their due in a Price peaceful manner. The following day, the Hon. John Briceño from Orange Walk Central was sworn-in as the Belize’s 5th Prime Minister. The people of Orange Walk Town returned their beloved son to Belmopan with the clear knowledge that he would, with the overall People’s United Party majority seats, then, be constitutionally elevated to the highest political office in the land. Even as George Price hailed with roots in Yo Creek Village in the Orange Walk District, the Hon. John Briceño will forever be described as the first Prime Minister from a constituency not in Belize City. As the sun blazed in a November-type calmness, the people of Belize braved Covid-19 and floodwaters, and wore their masks and sanitized for dear life. The Belizeans who manned our democracy in the voting rooms were truly up to the challenge and must be commended…thanks, on every Belizean’s behalf. Nothing would impede
2020
the electorate from marking the ballot to be counted in an exercise of protest and with the desire to improve our lives. Flipped became an overused word in the night broadcasts. The BLU team was living up to its billing. John Briceño’s mantra since 2016 was that he was ready to lead. On November 11, 2020, he led the PUP candidates to a monumental trouncing of the now former incumbents who had proved to be worthless tyrants to our democracy and incompetent at improving Belizean lives. There is truly a plan. This PUP has taken on the historic responsibility to steward a political architectural masterpiece called planBelize. The youthful body politic has spoken and the mandate is clear…twenty six to five. That lopsided advantage is the apostille offered to be able to look at the constitution and countenance meaningful reform that can serve Belize now so that OUR victory would not be pyrrhic but a true enhancement of our lives.
“The decisive leadership by the future PUP government will ensure that the implementation of the strategies for the strengthening of this pillar, will not fail on its transparency, solidarity, accountability and effective communication.”— Dr. Deysi Mendez, PUP PlanBelize Health Policy Committee According to the UDP Ministry of Health, we now have over a 4500 positive cases for SARS-COV2 in our land of the free. Many are now ignoring these numbers due to the high level of anxiety it causes. Our infection rate went beyond exponential and at par with the UDP government’s failed health policies. Possibly the most glaring proof of UDP blame is the infection of too many healthcare frontline workers. Barrow promised transportation, care for their children, ex gratia payments and, biggest of all, and overabundance of Personal Protective Equipment(PPEs). He is gone and there was nothing forthcoming. “The PUP recognizes that health information is key for the analysis, dissemination and use of reliable and timely health information for decision makers, both on a regular basis and in emergencies. To achieve this the PUP will have a skilled team with: - The capacity to detect, investigate, communicate and contain events that threaten public health security; with emphasis in public health surveillance,

This will be well organized with policy and protocols taking into account the recommendations of the Belize Medical and Dental Association. The importance of data cannot be stressed enough. Covid 19 has proven that public health surveillance comprises a wide range of efforts not only from public health sector but other health partners and the community so as to effectively trace and respond to the disease trends and threats. The health system is the heart of how the country responds to disease threats and protects its people, reason why PUP commits to investing in technologies and human capital by building on epidemiological and laboratory capacities and improving the required supply chain management to respond to the country’s needs during health security threats. We are committed to continue to build upon the lessons learned so far from the pandemic, unlike the cuts in health investments that our country has experienced for the past 12 years, the People United Party, under the leadership of the Hon. A
VICTORY
s has been promised by the Belizean people for a long time now, the United Democratic Party was kicked out of office on Wednesday, November 11th, a day that will go down in history. It is a resounding victory for the People’s United Party, which managed to win 26 of 31 seats. But more than that, it is a victory for the people of Belize who had long been tired of the stench of corruption which followed the UDP around. The legacy left behind by Dean Barrow will taint the UDP for many years to come. The man who boasted about wielding a two-sided machete with which he would chop corruption out of his party went on to preside over twelve years of unbridled corruption. The man who claimed that he would never indulge in hanky panky placed his unqualified son at the helm of BTL, on terms that made him a millionaire almost overnight, and that does not take into account the awarding of the $500M Boledo contract. Barrow the self-avowed saint also ensured that his family members benefitted majestically from the public trough, even as he claimed time and again to be a bastion of integrity. The UDP’s trouncing at the polls is less a reflection of the immaturity, weakness and stupidity of Patrick Faber, and more the result of Barrow’s 12 year reign of corruption, incompetence, arrogance and greed. As brilliant and amazing as he believed himself to be, Barrow destroyed the UDP he claimed to love so much, by his actions and also by his inaction in the face of outrageous criminality and corruption. No administration in our country’s political history has been so riddled with stinking greed, nepotism, hustling and unjust enrichment. From Penner, who the pontificating blow-hard Barrow declared to be factually but not legally guilty, to the absurd Castro, who Barrow said was distasteful, but not corrupt. Barrow, perhaps caught up in the web of his own making, determined by the enrichment of his own family, could do nothing as Ministers fed at the public trough like long-starved gluttons. Imagine, a pool repairman turned multi-millionaire who was accused, with evidence, of diverting government funds into an account he controlled – and Barrow did nothing. It is the injustice which did Barrow, Faber and the UDP in. The people of Belize got tired of watching as UDP Ministers and cronies and friends and family became filthy rich, while the country remained poor. Hundreds and hundreds of millions squandered, and at the end of twelve years more Belizeans were poor. The people got tired of watching as a select few got access to all the opportunities. We got tired of watching UDPs breaking the law with impunity, and spending our money without oversight. We got tired of watching the UDP behave as if they were a power without reckoning, even defying orders of the Court. We got tired of the rampant corruption, of the manipulation and the abuse and the violations, all explained away by Barrow with trademark eloquence, but as substantial as the stuff found in communal outhouses. Today, we usher in a new era of Belizean politics, and welcome a Prime Minister who makes history by being from outside of Belize City. There is much work to be done, but the team led by our Prime Minister, Hon. John Briceño is up to the task. This is not business as usual. This is not politics as usual. There will be no tolerance of corruption, and there will be integrity, accounting and oversight. There is a plan for the structured revitalizing of the economy, and a plan to fight the pandemic which has laid us low. This is the People’s United Party – a party of the people, destined to serve the people and nation of Belize. As it is said, so shall it be done!

VICTORIA

BELLY of the
BEAST
BLU Bukut After 12 years of the stinking UDP, the people had enough. Despite COVID and floods, they came out in record numbers to send a message. Our only wish is that Grampa Dean would have stuck around a bit longer to be booted in the ass. We hear he’s already blaming the loss on Patrick and telling people that the UDP only lost because Patrick was a weak leader with a small penis. Okay, so we made up that last part (not the small penis cause that’s true). The truth is that cousin Patrick didn’t have a chance in hell. Nobody in the UDP could have saved that Party. For years UDP Ministers and their friends and cronies and family members fed at the trough, getting rich while the people got poorer. Gramps thought they had gotten away with it. He figured that his pretty words were enough to fool the people. He figured if that didn’t work, the promise of millions and millions and millions of dollars would have done the trick. But nothing would have. The writing was on the wall a long time ago. The UDP is gone, but we’ll certainly be seeing a whole bunch again, hopefully behind bars. Sista B Bolts Reliable reports to the Belize Times is that Sista B, the sister of Grampa Dean, has told him in no uncertain terms that she wants out. Seems that she would have been happy to be in Queen Square under a UDP Government when they could have continued using taxpayers’ money like their own, but it won’t be like that under a PUP government. Now the Dean Barrow clone in a dress realizes that she’s stuck in there without Gramps to bankroll her and without the UDP government behind her and she’s ready to roll out. Our advice to her is just to go and let a real leader get into Queen Square. Allan

Pollard is ten times the leader Sista B will ever be and the youth has real love for the people. When we watched that interview with Sista B on Election Day, we realized that the Barrows are very special creatures…special with quotes. Get going, Sista B…the people of Queen Square are ready for real representation. Crybaby Castro That interview with Castro when Marconi and the people of Belize Rural North kicked his ass is a classic. The man didn’t cry when Grampa Dean fired him for hustling money in a land scheme. He didn’t cry when Taiwan sent him back to Belize for trying to get too touchy feely with a chaperone. He didn’t cry when he was caught hustling checks from the Belize Airports Authority and he didn’t cry when he was caught in the biggest Visa scam of the century. But that sucker was crying when he got the news that he’d lost yesterday. Now Castro at the best of times is not a pretty sight, but when the camera zoomed in on him and his lips were trembling and his face was all sad and stuff, now that was some ugly shit. And we don’t know why he’s so sad. It’s not like he can’t go back to pushing a cart and peddling tacos on the street-sides. He was better at that than at taking care of the people anyway. We have to say that Castro getting kicked to the curb is one of the highlights of the election. There were many highlight, but this was tops in our book. BAM – political career done Papa Jeff. Haul yuh R! Little man We’ve consistently referred to Patrick Faber as the little man, but we swear we had never seen a picture of him naked before. We’ve seen a picture of his old boyfriend John Saldivar naked, and we can tell you, what there was to see was not a pretty sight. We still have nightmares. Anyway so just days before Patrick goes to the polls, there he is in all his glory – though glory is a HUGE exaggeration. Anyway we just wanted to clarify that when we called Patrick little man, we were referring to his character, not his lil dangly thing. Wow, this is awkward. What we really, really mean to say is that we’re sorry for his loss in the general elections, because it seems that he’s lost so much already. Aww hell. BLU all the way.

Hon. John Briceño Election Night 2020 Victory Speech
Thank You, Thank you Belize. Thank you to our friends and supporters of the great People’s United Party. Today with high hopes and with brave heart Belizeans and despite of a pandemic, Belizeans in impressive numbers voted for a new beginning. As a nation we have kept the faith, from adult suffrage in 1958 to this day. We have kept Belizean democracy strong. So that once we bear witness to the peaceful transfer of authority from one administration to another. As we say, “the people have spoken.” Long live democracy. My fellow Belizeans it is with heartfelt gratitude that I address our nation tonight, fully aware that this 2020 election is a clarion call for our young nation to grow up, to face the challenges of our generation and to advance our peaceful constructive and progressive revolution hut more importantly to bring our people together as never before. So that as one, we can build a nation where everyone matters and everyone is once again a proud Belizean Tonight I want to thank my family, Rosanna, my wife, my three amazing sons Daniel, Johnny and Andre. tered into when signatories sign unto covenants. The International Covenant on Civil and Political was adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 2200A ( XXI ) of 16th December 1966 which was entered into force 23 March 1976, in accordance with Article 49. It was recognized as that,” in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ideal of free human beings enjoying civil and political freedom and freedom from fear and want can only be achieved if conditions are created whereby everyone may enjoy his civil and political rights, as well as his economic, social and cultural rights...” one such political right was exercised when almost 82 percent of the electorate voted in the 2020 General Election on November 11, 2020.
The rights adopted by PUP standard-bearers were recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The People’s Covenant intends to eliminate injustices and prejudices rampant within the political system in Belize the residue of a corrupt, incompetent, visionless UDP Government. Daniel J. Eleazar in his book The Covenant Tradition in Politics wrote that” politics is found when and where a sense of injustice or inequality exists. At its core, politics is the act of removing such injustices or inequalities. Explained by J Horowitz, for Elazar, “politics did not so much denote parties and election but rather elements in the social life of a community, state, or nation that actively command the participation of ordinary people - the public if you will.” For twelve long hard years the citizens, the marginalized, the single mothers, the disenfranchised youths within depressed environments have suffered from abuse neglect and political prejudices under the outgoing UDP administration. These individuals has been denied their basic rights embedded in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. Consequently, the now Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño has declared the end of these anomalies inflicted upon the masses through the entering of the Covenant with the people and the issuing of the people Bill of Rights. Pledge number 6 capsulize the intention of the PUP Bill of Rights : to work to eliminate economic and social privilege and disparity among Belizeans and to protect the rights of life, liberty, access to affordable education, universal health care, land and housing and the right to live in peaceful communities. It is the writer’s opinion that the Peoples United Party covenant with the people is the impetus for the PUP creed “serve the people.” This important document ensures that the mandate with the citizenry be adhered to. The time has come when the attitude “that there exists only the common good” must be adopted and the assurance that the words will translate into deeds. Let the work begin with courage, ability and honesty. Victory is ours!!

We will commence an aggressive and massive public health campaign, with emphasis on preventive measures. We will engage the private sector in the response of COVID-19 and begin to establish mechanisms that call for an integrated health system. We will promptly meet with stakeholders of various industries to streamline the best practice implementation of COVID-19 prevention.” Too many of us have become immune to the rise in Covid-19 numbers and ignoring the reports. It seems that as soon as Covid-19 case are going down, people seem to stop taking care of themselves. Belize was lacking capable leadership but now we have a fresh start with a mandate to harness Covid-19 in Belize. Around the world, leadership has been noted as an essential component to beating the coronavirus. We should not be at this level
given our small population density. Many countries with larger populations have less cases and deaths than Belize...Taiwan is the best example. One town or fifteen thousand or so, Orange Walk, has more active cases than the Cancun area of a million people. Our people are resilient, and with the support of a strong government of the PUP, which is determined to do well, we will overcome the challenges posed by this pandemic.” – PUP Release, November 3, 2020 A new PUP government will increase our testing capacity immediately and hire a trained cadre of contact tracers and identify suitable quarantine areas. A massive public health campaign in the villages and towns that are most affected will be undertaken. The economic and social aspects of the pandemic will be addressed seriously and without politics as is being done now. Hospital and home care needs to be standardized and disseminated in all districts. Private health care facilities need to be engaged to play their role in tackling this pandemic.—PlanBelize-Health

Answered Prayers
By Isabel Guadalupe Bennett MScN (Edu), BScN (AdminHONS), RN God granted me the opportunity to see with a focused lens during one year as a senator, the turmoil that our country was experiencing. My heart was always heavy with the issues of unaccountability under the UDP administration but I remained
even more prayerful with each passing issue. But no matter how many successful PUP debates I would have participated in, the decision to self-love and restore Belize was totally in your hands as the citizens of this nation. Throughout the process, I was certain of one simple fact - God did not put me on a losing team because He knows my life purpose and my passion to serve my country. And for this sustained reassurance, I give God thanks. It is with sincere gratitude too that I thank all voters for voting in this unprecedented election. I THANK YOU for choosing yourself and your children’s future! I THANK YOU for choosing servant leaders! I THANK YOU too for believing in our theme - EVERYONE FI WIN! I THANK YOU for choosing humble leaders who has a vision of prosperity and success for the Belizean people. Deep down inside I knew my team would win and I believed wholeheartedly that we would have won by
Belize hands opposition resounding electoral victory
After three successive terms in the opposition, Belize’s People’s United Party (PUP) has seen its leader John Briceno sworn in as prime minister Thursday after romping to victory in the country’s general elections By PATRICK E. JONES Associated Press via ABCnews PUNTA GORDA, Belize -- After three successive terms in the opposition, Belize’s People’s United Party (PUP) saw its leader John Briceno sworn in as prime minister Thursday after romping to victory in the country’s general elections. It was a massive victory for the PUP, sweeping 26 of the 31 seats that were up for grabs in Wednesday’s parliamentary elections. The vote came amid concern over the growing number of COVID-19 infections in the small Central American country and a stagnant economy. The Belize Elections and Boundaries Department, which conducted the general elections, reported that 81% of the registered voters cast their ballots in Wednesday’s poll. Briceno, a seven-time representative, becomes only the fifth person to hold the office of prime minister in Belize since independence in 1981 and he is the first prime minister from outside of Belize City. Prime Minister Briceno is the representative for Orange Walk Central, north of Belize City. Surrounded by family and friends Thursday morning in Belmopan, Briceno took the oath of office and promised to govern for all. “I assure everyone that we are going to be an open, accountable and accessible government for the people of Belize,” he said. Briceno then reminded the
crowd of supporters and friends who attended the swearing in that the country is still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and called on everyone to continue social distancing, wearing face masks and sanitizing often. “Together we will fight this pandemic,” he said. The Briceno administration comes to office under a “Plan Belize” manifesto which promises to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic head-on and also to stimulate the economy which has collapsed due to the pandemic. The polls closed at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and it was apparent from early that the PUP had taken the lead in the ballot counting. By 9 p.m., Patrick Faber, leader of the now opposition United Democratic Party, called the PUP leader to congratulate him on the massive victory and concede defeat. In a televised speech Wednesday night, Faber called for national unity to confront the nation’s challenges. “While there were winners and losers, the democracy that we have continued to enjoy throughout the life of this great young nation, is by far the greatest winner today,” he said. It was a resounding rejection by voters of the UDP, which had been seeking a fourth consecutive term in government. Its long-time leader, outgoing Prime Minister Dean Barrow, had earlier announced his retirement from electoral politics.
a huge majority. By how much, I was unsure. So I am deeply moved by the expression of confidence from all twenty-six standard bearers and I thank you wholeheartedly for choosing true leadership. I am immensely grateful to families, friends, and loyal supporters who so generously contributed their time and effort to campaigning throughout the country during this first ever challenging pandemic election season. To be effective servant politicians, our ministers must continue to listen to their constituents, develop their constituency concerns into workable proposals, and definitely build consensus to implement the proposals with people who share their vision to empower their constituencies. I pray that the village, town and city councils will work across party lines at all times to improve the lives of the Belizeans.
Continue to take the time to share your ideas, your insights, your concerns, and your aspirations with our Ministers because they don’t know everything. They will be sincerely appreciative of your willingness to discuss what really matters to you and your constituency and the country. So now that all our elected ministers are ready to serve, and you have given them the authority to make decisions and speak on your behalf, let’s keep all of them fully accountable for all their actions and inactions and to reverse all the wrongs that has been done to the people of Belize by the outgoing UDP government. They may not have been elected – except for five- but they can sit back and relax comfortably with the resources that they have all collectively misappropriated. So once again, I thank you wholeheartedly for choosing PUP as your new government for a better Belize and for a government that is accountable to the people.

You have placed your trust in me not just as an educator but as a leader who has the vision and strong will to fight for your voices to be heard. YOUTH POWER! Candice Pitts, Mesopotamia
Restoration begins!
We take this time to thank God for instilling in our candidate such grace and courage! She fought a valiant fight to help improve the deplorable social conditions of the constituency of Mesopotamia. Dr Candice Pitts, WE are proud of you! We hope that, like you, many more women will put their crack in that proverbial glass ceiling to increase women’s representation in our political governance and improve Belize. We also thank her entire family for the love they have shown all of us during this process. We thank her committee and entire team in Mesopotamia. You all were steadfast and worked very hard! You all are the MVPs. We thank the residents of Mesopotamia who voted for and supported our candidate. You all were the true sign of hope. Thank you! We congratulate the People’s United Party. Our victory is a significant victory. The work continues! Congratulations to Belize’s new Prime Minister, the Hon. John Briceno, and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Cordel Hyde.
Kareem Musa, Caribbean Shores
The first person to cast their ballot on November 11th, 2020 - the Rt. Hon. Said Musa. Thank you dad, for always showing me the value of humble service to our people. To my mother, my wife Carla, my two incredible sons, thank you for always being the solid foundation to get me up each day motivated to make our Belize a better place. To my brothers, who often times serve as my stunt doubles, I cannot thank you enough for all that you’ve done for my campaign. Of course thanks to my sisters-in-law too for putting up with us and for being such incredible support. To my Team, where do I even start? Yesterday as I went around to each polling station, reporters kept asking how it was that I looked so calm. My team. That is the answer. Everywhere I turned I saw intensity, tenacity, fight, energy and belief. Belief in me and belief that we are the best team to represent our people. I cannot thank you enough for always being there for me and for giving me that sense of calm. I would also like to thank my opponent, Lee Mark Chang, for running a good, clean campaign and I look forward to working with him to uplift the community that we both love so much. The Pfizer Covid-19 Vaccine, Explained
(© Kena Betancur/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images Though the analysis is in an early stage, an independent board of experts estimated that the Pfizer’s and BioNTech’s vaccine is over 90 percent effective.) By Carl Zimmer and Katie Thomas, New York Times Monday November 9, 2020 - The news — the first results from any latestage vaccine trial — buoyed stock markets and spirits as the public saw a glimmer of hope. But it’s worth noting that the news is still preliminary, and there is much that is still not known about how well the vaccine works. And one thing remained clear: The vaccine will not come in time to rescue the world from the next several months, when the virus will take many more lives unless the public takes more stringent public health measures. Here’s what we know, and don’t know, about the vaccine. What did these scientists find out? In July, Pfizer and BioNTech initiated a late-stage clinical trial on a coronavirus vaccine. Half of the people got the vaccine, while other half got a placebo of salt water. The companies then waited for people to get sick to determine if the vaccine offered any protection. So far, 94 participants out of nearly 44,000 have gotten sick with Covid-19. An independent board of experts looked at how many of those people got the vaccine, and how many got the placebo. That early analysis suggests the vaccine is over 90 percent effective. As is standard for clinical trials, the data was “blinded,” meaning that no one except the independent board — not the volunteers, doctors, or the company’s top executives — knows how many of the 94 people sickened by the virus got the vaccine or the placebo. Given the estimate that the vaccine is over 90 percent effective, however, we can safely assume very few people who were vaccinated got Covid-19. Is that a good result? It is. The Food and Drug Administration had set a bar of 50 percent efficacy for vaccine makers who wanted to submit their candidates for emergency authorization. If the preliminary results from Pfizer and BioNTech bear out — and accurately reflect how the vaccine will work in the real world — then it’s far more protective than that.
To get a sense of how good these results are, it’s worth considering licensed vaccines that people regularly receive. On the low end, influenza vaccines are 40 to 60 percent effective at best, because the influenza virus keeps evolving into new forms year after year. By contrast, two doses of the measles vaccine are 97 percent effective. Is the Pfizer vaccine safe? So far Pfizer and BioNTech have reported no serious safety concerns from their vaccine. Before running the current large-scale study, the companies ran smaller clinical trials starting in May that were specifically designed to detect warning signs about the vaccine’s safety. They tried out four versions of their vaccine and selected the one that produced the fewest cases of mild and moderate side effects, such as fever and fatigue. If their vaccine receives an emergency authorization from the F.D.A. and gets distributed to millions of people, the Centers for Disease Control and the F.D.A. will monitor them to make sure there’s no evidence of even rarer safety issues. Participants in the trial will also be monitored for two years. Who will get the new vaccine first? Pfizer’s chief executive has said that it could have 30 to 40 million doses of the vaccine before the end of the year, enough for 15 to 20 million people to get an initial shot and a booster three weeks later. Exactly who will qualify for the initial doses has not been decided, but groups that are at higher risk for infection, or are more vulnerable to the virus, are likely to get priority. That could include health care workers as well as older adults and those who have risk factors like obesity or diabetes. Pfizer and BioNTech say they could ramp up to 1.3 billion doses a year. That’s still far from enough to satisfy the world’s need for vaccines. If other vaccines also prove effective, companies will be able to manufacture them as well and help meet the demand. When will the general public be able to get it? Pfizer has said that it will likely ap-
ply for emergency authorization in the third week of November, after it collects the two months of safety data that the F.D.A. has asked manufacturers to submit. Then, the agency will consult with an outside advisory committee of experts, and may take weeks to pore over detailed data about the vaccine’s safety, effectiveness, and the companies’ ability to safely manufacture millions of doses. The vaccine could be authorized for certain high-risk populations before the end of the year, but that would only happen if everything goes as planned and there are no unforeseen delays. What is left to do in the trial? The trial will continue until it reaches 164 cases of Covid-19. At that point, the study will be complete and the results analyzed. While the preliminary results offer some compelling evidence that the vaccine is effective, they don’t tell us with certainty just how effective it is. Clinical trials simply aren’t set up to do that. They can only allow scientists to make an estimate based on statistics — an estimate known as efficacy. The effectiveness of a vaccine can only be firmly determined once millions of people get it. But experts say that the preliminary data indicates that the effectiveness should be very high. Will it work on older people? The new results also don’t tell us whether older people will get strong protection from the vaccine. Pfizer and BioNTech’s clinical trial includes people over age 65, so it will eventually provide this crucial information. Early clinical studies have suggested that older people produce a weaker immune response to coronavirus vaccines. But with such strong preliminary evidence, it’s possible that they will still get strong protection from a vaccine. What about children? Another open question is whether children will get protection from the vaccine. The trial run by Pfizer and BioNTech initially was open to people 18 or older, but in September they began including teenagers as young as 16. Last month, they launched a new trial on children as young as 12 and plan to work their way to younger ages. Was the Pfizer vaccine part of the government’s Operation Warp Speed? On Monday, Vice President Mike Pence said on Twitter that the news came “thanks to the public-private partnership forged” by Mr. Trump. In July, Pfizer got a $1.95 billion deal with the government’s Operation Warp Speed, the multiagency effort to rush a vaccine to market, to deliver 100 million doses of the vaccine. The arrangement is an advance-purchase agreement, meaning that the company won’t get paid until they deliver the vaccines. Pfizer did not accept federal funding to help develop or manufacture the vaccine, unlike front-runners Moderna and AstraZeneca. Pfizer has distanced itself from Mr. Trump and Operation Warp Speed. In an interview on Sunday, Kathrin Jansen, a senior vice president and the head of vaccine research and development at Pfizer, said, “We were never part of the Warp Speed,” adding, “we have never taken any money from the U.S. government, or from anyone.” On Monday, a spokeswoman for Pfizer clarified that the company is part

of Operation Warp Speed as a supplier of a potential coronavirus vaccine. Although it’s true that Pfizer and BioNTech had been working on a vaccine all year before the companies struck their deal with the U.S. government in July, a $1.95 billion deal is nevertheless a significant incentive to keep going. In fact, international health organizations have long used such market guarantees to encourage for-profit manufacturers to supply vaccines to the developing world. What does this news mean for the other vaccines in the race? There are 10 other vaccines now in late-stage trials across the globe. The fact that Pfizer and BioNTech have gotten encouraging results is making experts optimistic about the entire field. “It gives us more hope that other vaccines are going to be effective too,” said Akiko Iwasaki of Yale University. Pfizer and BioNTech are testing a vaccine that uses a genetic molecule called RNA to cause our own cells to make a viral protein. Our immune systems encounter the protein and make antibodies and immune cells that can recognize the protein quickly and deliver a swift attack. Moderna is in late-stage trials with an RNA vaccine of its own, and early clinical trials on other RNA vaccines are underway in China, England, India, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. But the news from Pfizer and BioNTech could be heartening to other vaccine developers as well. Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine causes our bodies to make a viral protein called a spike. A number of other vaccines deliver the spike protein into the body, or just a fragment of it, that triggers the immune system to recognize it. Still other vaccines are based on other viruses, which harmlessly deliver a gene for the spike protein into cells. If the spike protein prompts a strong protection to the coronavirus, then all of these vaccines might also deliver encouraging results in the months to come. Widespread success of coronavirus vaccines would be a huge boon to the world’s health, because Pfizer and BioNTech alone cannot meet the full demand. Can we stop wearing masks now? Please don’t. The coronavirus is raging across the country(even Belize), and public health experts have said that Americans need to be prepared for a very tough winter. Even if a vaccine is authorized within months, it will initially only be available to a sliver of the American public. Most health officials think an effective vaccine won’t be available to anyone who wants it until well into next year. Even then, there is still no data about whether a vaccine will stop asymptomatic spread of the virus, or the extent to which it will prevent people from developing severe Covid-19. Most experts say even when a vaccine is widely available, additional measures like masks will still be necessary until the public health threat has subsided. “This will not replace hygienic measures — it will be an adjunct to hygienic measures,” said Dr. Paul Offit, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the F.D.A.’s vaccine advisory panel. “You owe it to others to make sure you wear a mask.”

The Joe Biden I Knew Has Been Humbled
By Frank Bruni, New York Times November 10, 2020 - You no doubt saw or heard at least some of Joe Biden’s pitch-perfect victory speech last weekend, but what about the victory video that his campaign released hours earlier, just after CNN and other networks declared him the president-elect? It’s a gorgeous two minutes of music (a rendition of “America the Beautiful” by Ray Charles) and images, precisely none of which show Biden. He cedes the frame and the moment entirely to Americans themselves — to Black Americans, white Americans, Native Americans, disabled Americans, young Americans, old Americans — and to the landscapes in the lyrics of the song. The video made clear that we, not he, were the focus, the story, the point of all of this. His speech hours later similarly elevated the first person plural over the first person singular, which was singularly transcendent under Donald Trump. Largely to draw a contrast with Trump, Biden ran one of the humblest presidential campaigns I can recall. He claimed victory in the presidential race last weekend with the same radical humility. And that tonic of a tone could be crucial to his agenda. His sweepingly ambitious goals include a major expansion of health care, a titanic effort to combat climate change, yet another change in the tax code and much, much more. But he’s wisely fashioning all of that as a public, not a personal, quest, and he’s casting himself as servant, not lord. The best way to ask for the moon is modestly. That approach — call it the New Humility — was evident in a small detail on Monday morning. He released a written statement about Pfizer’s reported progress toward an effective coronavirus vaccine, and its second sentence extend-

ed congratulations to “the brilliant women and men who helped produce this breakthrough.” He directed attention away from, not toward, himself. He added this: “It is also important to understand that the end of the battle against Covid-19 is still months away.” There was none of Trump’s overreach, the kissing cousin to his self-congratulation. Biden was giving it to us straight. He was giving it to us humble. It’s often said that people aren’t capable of big change when they’re older. But Biden has changed, in ways as poignant as they are prudent. I sometimes don’t recognize this version of him. He used to have a way of sucking the oxygen out of a room. He couldn’t shut up. If you gave him the microphone, he thrilled to it, wouldn’t surrender it, sang an aria that turned into a whole damned opera. A bunch of us Times columnists had lunch with him at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., in 2012 and came away commenting on how spirited, upbeat and warm he was, but also on how he talked and talked and talked. The following year, he visited the Times Building in Manhattan and sat down with a small group of editors and writers. He talked even more. We were lucky to get in a question every 10 minutes. But something happened between then and now. He got older. He suffered great loss with the death of his son Beau. And Trump happened, too, providing the country with an example of hubris so monumental — and self-fascination so malignant — that any sane and sensitive observer would recoil from it, look for traces of those toxins in himself and purge them, especially if volunteering to be the antidote to that egomania. Biden’s campaign verged on self-effacing even before the pandemic compelled a retreat from the

campaign trail and a shedding of all the pomp that a presidential bid typically entails. In those early primary debates, while Biden’s rivals talked past their time limits, he’d cut himself off, coloring dutifully within the lines. Technically, physically, he was always in the center of the stage. Effectively, he was anywhere but. He positioned himself not as the heir to the Democratic tradition or as a messiah charting the party’s future but as a transitional figure. What could be humbler than that? Sure, this was strategic, but it would have rung hollow had it not been matched by his bearing. His climactic remarks at the Democratic National Convention in August seemed to be the work of a team of people who had hung the most famous line from Trump’s boast to Republicans four years earlier — “I alone can fix it” — on the wall of their writing room and resolved to produce its antonym. The convention itself was distinctive for how it kept turning the camera around so that voters, not Biden, dominated the frame. When there were Biden-centric testimonials, they described him not in heroic terms but simply as a decent, honest man. “He was making clear that he wouldn’t rule as some self-obsessed despot,” I wrote then. “He wouldn’t rule at all. He’d govern. It’s a different, humbler thing.” The assumption that Biden won’t
Hon. Jose Mai (nephew) : The PUP family bids farewell to Julian Avila of Orange Walk Town. Tio Julian as I refer to him is my mom’s brother and actually was tasked to raise his seven younger brothers and sisters after his mother (my grandmother) passed away at a young age. Born and raised on Riverside Street, Julian was always a stalwart of the PUP. He along with other young men at the time, members of the PUP were among the first to start the construction of what is now the OW Municipal Building. He also served as an elected councilor on the OW Town Council. A vegetable farmer, a cane farmer and one of the few Bee Keepers left in the country; Tio Julian was a hard worker. Travel well Tio. seek a second term as president reflects more than his age, 77. (He’ll be 78 before Inauguration Day.) It reflects his bearing, too. There’s little greed or gluttony in it. It reflects an ethos that was embedded deep into this campaign, that is carrying over into this transition and that manifests itself in all sorts of ways. Jill Biden’s decision to continue her teaching job even as first lady: That’s part and parcel of the New Humility. So was Biden’s reticence after Election Day, as he modeled and urged patience with vote counting and steered clear of any tit-for-tat with Trump. The New Humility means that he and his aides aren’t trying to monopolize the headlines by turbocharging chatter about who might get which cabinet positions but instead sending signals that this is a process, and a sober one at that. And the New Humility shaped the opening stretch of Biden’s victory speech. “Folks,” he said, “the people of this nation have spoken. They’ve delivered us a clear victory, a convincing victory, a victory for we, the people. We’ve won with the most votes ever cast on a presidential ticket in the history of the nation, 74 million!” We. The people. “I’m humbled by the trust and confidence you’ve placed in me,” he added. Humbled.Trust.This new presidency will force us to dust off an old vocabulary.
