LIFE @ NORTH LONDON HOSPICE

Message from the Chief Executive their families and visitors to use giving much needed extra space for them to relax and spread out when they have been visiting for many hours. A number of our corporate partners including John Lewis and Jones Lang LaSalle gave us a helping hand in re-decorating the room and tidying the garden area as part of the transformation. The area also has new furniture including tables and chairs, which were kindly donated by a pharmaceutical company in Oxford. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped with getting the Enfield site up and running and also to all those who participated with the creation of the new lounge area. In other news we are delighted to have opened three more shops. These can be found in Brent Street in Hendon, Turnpike Lane and

just up the road from the hospice on the High Road in North Finchley. I am confident these new shops will be well supported by the local community. With your help we will continue to ensure that people with a terminal illness from across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey are able to continue benefiting from the services we provide. None of our work would be possible without your support.

who have a terminal illness and those who support them. The facility has a number of treatment rooms to provide specialist procedures without the patient having to visit a hospital; counselling and spiritual care to enable people to deal with the emotional stress of their situation and physiotherapy to help patients maintain mobility for longer. In addition, massage, reflexology, creative and complementary therapies will be available to reduce anxiety, assist in pain relief and control other symptoms. New opportunities for support will also be available for patients’ carers and families. The building is also home to our community nurse team and incorporates a tranquil garden where patients and carers can relax and a coffee shop.

Welcome to the Autumn edition of our newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading about our recent work here at North London Hospice. This summer has been a particularly busy and exciting time for the hospice. The opening of our new Enfield site has been a real highlight. By providing high quality day services more people can stay independent and at home for as long as possible. The previous day centre space at Finchley has been transformed into a lounge area for patients,

The North London Hospice site in Barrowell Green, Winchmore Hill, is open. North London Hospice has provided care and support services for outpatients from Barnet, Haringey and Enfield for almost 20 years. Until now, those

services have all been provided from an established inpatient unit in Finchley. The new Enfield facility, which will offer an enhanced range of services, will eventually allow the hospice to reach three times as many members of the community

Support Groups Support groups play a crucial role in helping us to raise both money and awareness in the community. They are often made up of friends, family and neighbours uniting and using their talents to make a positive difference to the local community. The North West Support Group (NWSG) of North London Hospice is one of several geographical groups who raise funds and also aim to raise local awareness of the hospice’s work. Its committee comprises members from different faiths and organisations. Some represent their local church, synagogue, school, institute or health centre; others represent themselves and their friends and neighbours. The Big Fun Walk is North London Hospice’s biggest fundraising event and was started by the NWSG. The seven-and-a-half mile walk

Members of the North West Support Group starts at East Finchely underground station, passes through many of London’s Royal Parks and finishes at Storey’s Gate, Westminster. In 2011 walkers raised more than £155,000. So far this year the total stands at around £117,000. The hospice is keen to see new support groups. If an individual

or a small group are interested in starting one, we would love to hear from them. For more information contact Natalie Gordon by calling 020 8446 2288 or email ngordon@northlondonhospice.co.uk

Dedicate a light to someone special

Hundreds of lights dedicated to someone special will shine out at North London Hospice this November. The magnificent horse chestnut tree will once again twinkle with fairy lights to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones.

This year the ‘Light up a Life’ ceremony will take place on Sunday 25 November at 4pm in the hospice grounds. During the ceremony people of all ages and faiths will join together to remember and celebrate their loved ones in a multi-faith service. The lights will shine every evening from 4pm to 9pm until early January. The names of everyone remembered and celebrated will be entered into a ‘Book of Lights’ which will be kept on display in the hospice Room of Quiet at both Finchley and Enfield.

If you would like to sponsor a light please call 020 8446 2288 or return the form at the back of this newsletter.

LIFE @ NORTH LONDON HOSPICE

‘They make life as happy and pleasant as possible.’ North London Hospice provides symptom management both at home and in the hospice. Our aim is to provide patients with the choices to manage their health needs and symptoms whether physical, emotional or spiritual. Doreen Searle had been in Barnet Hospital for four weeks before she was admitted to the hospice’s inpatient unit. The hospital could not bring her pain under control so Doreen was hoping that we could help her. Doreen noticed a real difference between being in hospital and being at the hospice. She said: “In hospital I had no television or radio and I was very bored. There wasn’t really anyone to talk to either. “For a lot of my time there I was feeling very rough and not able to read so a TV or radio would have been a welcome distraction. The time passed so slowly. There’s a wonderful difference at the hospice – the nurses and volunteers are lovely and come and talk to you.” North London Hospice has 17

In the spotlight Volunteers are an integral part of any charity, none more so than here at North London Hospice. In this edition of LIFE we talk to Maddy Rayner. How long have you volunteered at North London Hospice? Since the building opened back in 1992. I initially heard about the hospice when someone came to my local synagogue to talk to us about volunteering.

What does your volunteer role involve? I give two days a week and I’m either helping out on the reception desk, manning the till in the Whestone shop, bucket shaking for the fundraising team or helping with admin tasks. What do you enjoy most? It’s an opportunity to meet new people and friends. The roles are varied and it’s all for a good cause.

Mailing appeals The response to our appeals has been outstanding and continues to play a vital role in fundraising for North London Hospice. In the last year more than £250,000 has been raised by our supporters through our mailing appeals alone. Mailing appeals enable our supporters to get involved directly with the hospice in a very individual way, and to make a donation to specific causes and help us carry on the vital work we do. The appeals are carefully planned so that everyone can be included, from supporting the hospice’s nurses, to making a dedication to a loved one, by having a sunflower planted in our garden, or sponsoring a light on the horse chestnut tree. Our first hospice week mailing raised more than £48,000 and gave our supporters the chance to organise their own fundraising event.

Dear

Dear Salutation

In 1996 I decided I wanted to spend my time doing something more worthwhile than lunching with friends and shopping at Brent Cross. Of course I knew about the Hospice as I live locally and my best friend suggested fundraising. She said “all you can do is talk!”

You can help get the very best hospice care for local people - for generations to come

And so, I approached North London Hospice to volunteer my services in fundraising. I turned up at the building in Woodside Avenue and was given a red collection pot and sent to Enfield. An hour and a half later I returned with the pot full to the brim containing £120.62.

This year marks a significant milestone for North London Hospice. In 1992 we officially opened our inpatient building at Woodside Park, making 2012 a special 20th anniversary.

That was 15 years ago and since then I have raised over £2 million for North London Hospice. I ‘work’ 4 days a week, pounding the pavements to sell merchandise, obtaining gifts and donations from local businesses.

Our continued services, year after year, are only made possible thanks to donations from our supporters. On behalf of everyone at North London Hospice please accept my sincere thanks for your kind support in the past.

At the end of November the Hospice entertains nearly 1000 guests at the annual ‘Light up a Life’ ceremony. I scrounge doughnuts and mince pies from local bakeries and wine from supermarkets for the refreshments stall.

Today, thanks to people like you, we are planning for the opening of our brand new Day Services Centre, which will offer vital support and services for people who need specialist end-of-life care. These really are exciting times and now, more than ever, we are extremely grateful to supporters like you.

Each year I sell advertising space in the annual Hospice brochure which raises thousands of pounds. I also get involved with fundraising events and get hold of raffle prizes and awards anything that might raise money.

The new purpose-built facility will complement our well-established inpatient services based in Barnet, and will offer patients medical treatment including pain relief, physiotherapy, alternative therapies and therapeutic activities. There will be many opportunities for patients and carers to meet each other in a pleasant environment to enjoy time together, as well as share information and support each other over worries and fears if they wish.

It’s hard work raising the money but it’s not like a paid job. Like all the 700 volunteers at the Hospice, I do this because my heart is in it. It seems that I am always asking someone for something. And now I am asking you. I am writing this letter of appeal in the hopes that it may lead you to support me in raising £15,000 towards a new supply of syringe drivers for the Hospice.

As with all our services, the new North London Hospice Day Services Centre will provide care for people from Barnet, Haringey and the surrounding Enfield community.
