RAMONA: What does the GOLDEN CHILD is about? CARMEN: The name is taken from an old movie I watched growing up, The Golden Child (1986) with Eddie Murphy. The styles in the shoot are partly inspired by that 80s era and in the shoot we mix some of those styles with today’s fashion using unconventional elements to make the pieces a bit more editorial. RAMONA: How did you pick your model for this concept, were you looking for someone with a specific look? CARMEN: Yes! Lottie had everything we were looking for in a model and was a dream boat to work with; very professional, and made the shoot a smooth process. It always makes the shoot more enjoyable when the model is easy to work with. Lottie is beautiful person inside and out, and makes for a perfect model.3 RAMONA: Beautiful clothes and styling! Tell us about the process of picking out outfits and deciding what kind of makeup/hair to do. CARMEN: This shoot had a very organic process. As we shoot we decide what will work best for each look; some of the hair styles changed on the day to suit the clothing. For me, this is the best way to work as you really get the best out of what you are shooting, instead of making it what you want; it becomes something the team creates together.

RAMONA: Do you retouch your own images? I love the clean look, can you share any tips? CARMEN: Yes, I do all my own retouching, its hard for me to think about someone else finishing off my own work. Time management is my big tip, make sure you give your self the time to really work on the style and feeling you are trying to achieve with each image. RAMONA: What makes a good model? CARMEN: Confidence, great models have confidence in the way they move & of course a great attitude always helps! RAMONA: Are you a full time photographer? CARMEN: Yes I am! I have been shooting for 13 years and I love every minute of it.

RAMONA: I love those golden leaves, did your team paint them? CARMEN: The idea popped into my head late one night, so I had a look on the web and initially I couldn’t find anything that matched with what I was thinking. One of the best parts of my job is getting to explore my ideas so I found the leaves and foliage from plants around our place and I spray painted them gold for a better finish. I spent about 20 mins looking at different golds until I made my mind up, lol. When we started shooting the first look we all couldn’t believe how well it worked, very happy with the end result! RAMONA: Anything else you want to share from the shoot that people would like to know? CARMEN: Half way through the shoot, the team and I lost our minds a little. After we watched a very silly cat video, we ended up laughing to the point of crying. Having a team that you can share a laugh with makes shooting so much fun, especially when you can get such beautiful work and have a great time shooting it as well.

RECLAIMING OUR STREETS written by MAJA JANKOWSKA @jankowska.photo

Walking to the bus stop at 10pm on a Saturday night. Earphones in, but music isn’t playing, just in case I won’t be able to hear someone creeping up behind me. Turning

my head every five minutes and speeding up as soon as

I sense a silhouette coming up behind, just in case. The constant fear continues as I arrive at the bus stop, exactly

two minutes before my bus is due. I don’t want to wait there

longer than necessary. It’s not lit very well and all the shops are already closed. I sit down and hold a phone in my hand, with my recent call page up so I can call someone quickly, just in case.

This is my journey to the bus stop, every weekend to work.

Exactly the same, it’s a routine I have developed to keep myself safe on the streets at night.

I thought this routine was perfect, but a man put it to test a

couple of weeks ago. It was my first day back at work after two months off due to ill mental health, so as an extra pick

me up I wore my “Bitches Unite” t-shirt. I was feeling extra powerful.

As I stood at the bus stop a man from across the street

started shouting at me. I thought he was harmless because he looked pretty drunk, so I just ignored it and pretended I couldn’t hear him, you know, my earphones trick!

“Don’t pretend you can’t hear me! I know you want some of that” I wish I hadn’t turned my head at that point. I still regret

it. There he was, with his trousers down, still shouting at me. Yes, it’s exactly what you’re thinking; the man across the street, previously deemed harmless was a flasher.

I was terrified and now sure of his intentions. I tried calling

my boyfriend a hundred times but the signal was terrible and I didn’t get through.

My routine was failing.

I started to panic, thinking of another plan of action. Should I

ick of to look me ery step run away like I had done the last time a man followed me, or look for a police officer as I had before – I’ve been followed around more than once. Or, it occurred to me, maybe I

should just ignore him and pretend I couldn’t see him. I’m used to ignoring men who shout at me but this was a little more scary than usual. I even considered shouting at the guy – I did that once before when a passing man spanked

my butt as he passed me with a group of friends. They found it very amusing that their friend had touched me – I didn’t.

In this whole situation I almost didn’t notice the bus arriving. Shaken up, I thanked the bus driver for arriving on time. He just looked at me funny, obviously he didn’t have a clue that

he had saved me from whatever this man was about to do next.

This is not an isolated event. This is happening now, to

women around the world. Going back from work, to work, from a party, shopping trip, late lecture. All the time. It’s not

the first and not the last time it’s going to happen to me, but we can unite and work against it together.

I continue to walk to the bus stop every weekend, following the same routine. I walk to a taxi rank five minutes away from work when I come home much later and spend £8 on a taxi

home to avoid potentially getting raped. I live in a constant fear of someone taking advantage of me just because I am female.

I am writing about it because I’m sick of having to look behind me with every step I take at night, I’m sick of being

casually, sexually assaulted in the streets. I am fed up of having to pay for taxis because it is not safe for me to walk

home from work. We need to unite against it and speak up! There is no place in the modern world for this oppression

and if we speak about it now, optimistically, maybe things will change and our daughters will be safe to walk the streets of our cities at night.

RAMONA: Tell us more about your photography style! NATASCHA: I am a young photographer from Berlin, Germany. I started shooting Editorial Photography about a year and a half ago. Photography is a great balance for me since I get to express my creativity. I love clean und natural as well as creative editorial make-up looks. That’s why my portfolio is a mix of creative beauty editorials and clean pictures. RAMONA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? NATASCHA: My biggest goal in photography is getting published in VOGUE ... I hope that I can do it within the next 5 years.

RAMONA: What a fun and clean editorial! How did you get the idea for it and what inspired you? NATASCHA: It has always been my goal to get published in Lucy’s magazine and so I started to work on a submission. I looked at what your next theme is and I planned this concept with that theme in mind! RAMONA: The model is perfect for this idea, she has such a beautiful smile! How do you pick your models? NATASCHA: For my editorial shootings I only work with agency models. I discovered Nehle at Kea models and immediately knew that she fits perfectly into my shooting concept and that I would like to work with her. And...It was the right choice! She is naturally so beautiful and she’s also a very happy person so it was easy to make this shoot happen.

LUCY’S 76

RAMONA: Tell us three fun facts about this editorial: NATASCHA: 1. We still find glitter particles in the studio today! 2. The studio was about 15 square meters. We mastered hair, make-up, photo set and catering on this area. I’m proud of you girls! 3. It was the longest shooting day I’ve ever had. We produced 3 editorials on that day and worked a total of about 12 hours. The last picture was taken at 11:00 pm in the evening.

RAMONA: Do you have a favorite editorial that you created? NATASCHA: First, I have to say that I love all of my editorials. But an absolute favorite is the ‘‘Water’’ editorial with Nicola and Stella. We shot it with a small pool in the studio. It is one of my first photoshoots! It was a challenge to work with the water and the reflections, but that’s the magic of this editorial. I am very proud of the results and we were a great team.

City make girls,it rain

LUCY’S 100

The rain won’t stop these women from navigating the city, and having fun while at it. Strong, determined female portraits, the slick

shimmer of wet pavement and sequins reflecting inside taxi cabs ; this is the magic of a tribe of NY friends making their dreams come true.

This story was shot in February of this year, during NYFW, while I (Liana) was in town. I met the ladies on the team last year while enrolled in Mastered, an online global fashion accelerator program. United by our passion for visual storytelling with strong female narratives, this story strives to capture the spirit of kinship, style, determination and energy of companions on the journey to becoming together in the city that never sleeps. I feel compelled to tell the story of the women I have the privilege to dream and create with. The story is actually about us, dreaming, working hard and having fun while doing it. Jennifer (stylist), Ashley (MUA) and Li (hair) are all based in NY. We joked during the shoot that it won’t be too long until I take the leap and join them.. The models Liv, Jonelle and Astrid, all with Red Models NY, are true New Yorkers. They were troopers shooting on a fairly cold day with open toe shoes and skin exposed. There is an undeniable magnetic and amplifying energy to New York. To add to that, I like to shoot women from a lower angle so the perspective can reveal a sense of emergence and greatness. Astrid exits the taxi cab with a dramatic stand on the ledge, Jonelle crosses her arms while cars zoom on by and Liv stops traffic on the bold graphic crosswalk. Despite the rain, we had a great time working together however the happiest collaborator of the day had to be the taxi driver who got to pull his car over and run his meter while us girls danced and shot in and around his car. When you’re a city girl, you make it rain!

LUCY’S 106

INTENSITY JUNKY Shooting Up in the Morning - 2/2/17 Hi, my name is Mo, and I am an intensity addict. It’s been thirty minutes since my last hit. Hello, Mo. I was born into an intensity cult, married a fellow cult member and we practiced intensity together for 36 years. I’m not sure if I’ve had more than a day or two of sobriety since my divorce was finalized six months ago. (Knowing nods from the others)

I say, “Sure,” and keep walking because I don’t want to talk to him, or more accurately, I don’t want to hear him repeat another one of his stories, about how he was given a couple of t-shirts once by the king of the world or something. Then I realize what I am holding is a pair of white lacy thong underwear, like I used to buy for my wife. I don’t know where they came from and now I’m feeling guilty for lying to my dad, and am wondering where I can stash the underwear. My dad says, “They look like very small t-shirts, there isn’t a lot of fabric there.” Gah! Anyway, I wake up feeling kind of exhausted. I’m determined to be sober today.

I drank a couple of glasses of wine last night, you know, to take the edge off, and, well, by the time it had worn off and I sent myself to bed I was really itching for some sort of intense connection.

I walk downstairs, feed the dog, start my coffee, walk the dog around the cabin, and come back into the kitchen, add cream to my coffee, and immediately open my iPad—telling myself I’m only checking for messages…

There was only the dog…,

(Uh oh, expressions and groans)

(Laughs, because they know how intense doing crazy shit can be)

Haha, I know, I know… And there are a couple of responses to messages, which is nice, but then I open the email from the Washington Post with the links to the day’s batch of opinion pieces about what a crazy human our president is. Well, I think he is crazy, so I click on the first link, and impatiently wait for the article to load. I read it and, yup, He’s definitely crazy, and I’m intensely outraged and scared. I don’t outwardly show these things, but I feel them, and the chemical rush of fear and anger…

So… I put the dog in his crate. (More laughs) I brushed my teeth, changed into my night clothes, and climbed under my heated blanket. It was soothing and comforting… on the outside. Inside I was aching. I focused on my breathing, you know, practicing my sobriety, and eventually fell into… an agitated, night of intense dreams! (More knowing laughs) At one point I was surrounded by all these women at some sort of convention who were in various stages of undress. Most were stunningly beautiful and painfully indifferent to me. It’s feeling like too much so I’m trying to leave and then there is my dad asking, “What are you carrying, a couple of t-shirts?” Cuz, that’s how he asks questions… always supplying the answer, as well.

…wash away nuance and beauty. Ahh, the intensity, right? I don’t want to ramble on, you know how it is… Sometimes the need feels too big and I just want to belong, to hang out with my friends, shoot up together, just be normal… a normal American, you know? Anyway, Thanks for listening. (Deep breath) Now I’m… (checks watch) …30 seconds sober.

The American has no time to tie himself to anything, he grows accustomed only to change, and ends by regarding it as the natural state of man. He feels the need of it, more, he loves it; for the instability, instead of meaning disaster to him, seems to give birth only to miracles all about him. —Alexis de Tocqueville, 1831
