The idea behind the shoot came from a strong message I wanted to share. It came from a story I used to read when I was a child “LE PETIT PRINCE” from Saint-Exupéry. I focused on the episode of the flower. The little prince invest a lot in caring of the flower. Previously in the story the fox’s statement is the following “love comes from investing in other people”. Even if in the story the rose is vain and naive the love from the little prince is very deep and sincere, due to the fact that he cares a lot for her. The message can be understood as even the most simple things can take a big value when the love we have for it is unique and sincere, this is why we tanted to put it in image.

The look of Anna the model has been carefully choose to remember the flawless look the princess had in all the stories of our childhood, flawless but strong and modern, that’s how we define our contemporary heroine !! Also, this message in investing in other people is also something strong we wanted to put in the pictures. The bubble glass is showing a particular reality which can be differed if you go behind the glass. We wanted to do as a “mise en abyme” with the viewers and its point of view. How far can you trust what your eyes see? Everything in our world of today is illusion and when Anna the model is behind the glass you discovered a new point of view. Building the two sculptures of glass with the flowers in is a way to show that elevating the flowers as piece of art make them flourish and grow, it’s link again with the story of the prince to show that everyone is unique and deserve love. The inspiration for this story was color. I knew I wanted to shoot something with vidid hues and use an African American model. When I started putting the shoot together I had a pretty simple mood board and gave my stylist Ryan creative freedom as she pulled the clothes. I didn’t want to micromanage anyone’s creativity. My team was made up of all women and they are all super creative people, so I was excited to see what we were able to create together if everyone felt free. For makeup, Katie brought several colors to try out. We didn’t want to overpower the story with too much make up, but the splash of orange mascara just worked so well to add a subtle yet unexpected touch. Nya’s eyes are so beautiful and expressive that it’s nice to have that kiss of color to add some drama. Katie’s make up was so beautiful and was the perfect contrast for the clothing colors.

When we were looking for models my friend showed me pictures of Nya and I immediately knew she was going to be perfect for our story; we were so excited to have her on board. She was amazing to work with and helped us to execute exactly the vision I had in mind. She’s very tall and lanky which lends her movements and poses a graphic quality, which I love. Nya has a grace and an awkwardness that was just the perfect mix to make the story feel both elegant and fun.

I chose to light this story very softly. We had a lot going on with the colors and the patterns and I wanted the light to compliment those elements and not over power them. I love to use a lot of negative space and different angles and this light allows me to have a lot of freedom in that area. I’m so in love with this shoot and it came together so seamlessly. My team really got what I was going for. We were all on the same page and each had so much creative input that in the end it came together perfectly.

Marina (makeup artist) and I have already been working together as a team for many years. Living in China we have both dreamt about one day exploring the culturally rich Asian country of Japan. After one particular photographic shoot, on our journey home, we stumble upon a new Japanese restaurant and it was here that we both decided we should try to make it happen at some point at least in images.
One day while out walking we found ourselves at an Asian fashion designer’s showroom. His creations delighted us and we realized this was the right fit for us. We got the designer’s contact details from the owners and within an hour we were in contact with him. We were ecstatic with joy when he agreed to supply us with clothing from his collection for us to shoot. Next, we found an agency who provided us with a Chinese model with the incredible name of Meihua, Meaning ‘Magnificently Beautiful’. We took a lot of inspiration from all of these turns of fate and lucky circumstances that seemed to support us towards our goal. By preparing for the shoot we imagined trees waking up after a long winter, bright rays and colors of the morning spring as well as Sakura blossom blowing in dashing winds as the sun rose from behind the mountains. In all of this, we received the greatest pleasure in gaining support from people that had previously been complete strangers to us who were giving us their time and energy without personal gain. It just shows, If you believe in your abilities and just do it, you can trust everything else will fall into place and the possibilities are limitless.

Photographer Emmanuelle Choussy and the teen model Jade Weber, both raised by French parents, met in Los Angeles for the first time in 2016. There was a big creative crush between the artist and Jade and her mom! Two years after a very nice first beauty/makeup session made at the photographer’s studio in Beverly Hills, today they are working outdoors on an urban fashion mood. Surrounded by a strong creative team she had gathered for the occasion, Emmanuelle suggested to work in downtown Los Angeles. The preparation of Jade started at 9am at the beautiful Beverly Wilshire hotel (where the movie Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts was shot), inside the celebrity hairstylist Lea Journo’s salon. Second floor, pool view, according per Emmanuelle’s suggestions, Lea decided to go big with the hairdo! “Let’s have fun!” was the moto. Jessica (Shaken Vanity studios) decided to go for an urban/teenager makeup. Margalette, celebrity fashion stylist, brought so many wonderful outfits that the choice was very tough to do. This mission came back to the photographer, according per the stylist’s recommendations. Time to leave Lea’s so cosy place, the team moved to downtown Los Angeles where after a quick coffee at the famous Urth Caffe, they started to shoot in the streets nearby. Wonderful unexpected opportunity to use BANKSY street art with a very sweet and white look, coming from the gallery Please Do Not Enter. The atmosphere is casual, funny but serious as always. The light that day was just amazing, golden sun was on time for the 3rd and 4th looks. Then the team moved again, heading the Watts Tower for the two last looksl; perfect timing for a dusk team moment. The French designer Titelle’s dress is such a beauty on Jade, she looks like a modern princess. The shoot was finished at 7pm after loads of fun. Enjoy the pictures!
