Coulsdon Manor is a beautiful parkland course which enjoys spectacular views over London. The course itself contains a wide variety of trees and in the Autumn months gives a magnificent display of colours.

The course is not the longest but offers a challenging test of parkland golf requiring accurate shots from tee to green in order to score well.

The hotel offers a relaxing environment for refreshments before or after your round and the hotel has many function rooms that can be hired for various occasions.

At Coulsdon Manor we welcome applications to join the club as well as offering pay and play golf. We also have various society packages for larger groups.

TheCourse occupies the estate land which surrounds the old Coulsdon Court house which has now been greatly extended to form the Coulsdon Manor Hotel.

HISTORY

In 1922 Coulsdon Urban District Council acquired the bulk of the estate and recruited Harry S Colt, who designed many courses including Sunningdale and Royal Lytham & St Annes, a regular British Open venue to design and lay out the land as a municipal golf course with Coulsdon Court as the club house.

Little is known about the golf club at that time except that it was a private club (and that Leslie Cotton, brother of Henry, was the Pro at the time). When the Second World War started in 1939 the club was disbanded.

The Coulsdon Manor Hotel as it’s known today sits in Old Coulsdon, a downland village that has its origins in pre-historic times.

From the late 18th Century through to the early 20th Century, Coulsdon was a typical old-time village and Manor encompassing a - thousand acres of farmland and woodland; presided over by the local Squire and Rector with its little group of craftsmen supporting the needs of its farms and cottages.

The current hotel building was built in 1850 by the third Squire of the Manor of Coulsdon, Thomas Byron. The fine Victorian house replaced the much smaller Hartley Farm, which could be dated back to the 13th Century. Coulsdon Court as it was in 1908 – A Victorian manor house.

Many of the historic buildings and locations that made up the Manor of Coulsdon in the era of Coulsdon Court can still be seen amongst the modern landscape of the village… See what you can spot.

There was also a butler’s room, a head housemaid’s room, staff room, sitting room and scullery. In 1854, the main public road through the village ran straight past the estate.

The Squire didn’t like it being so close to the estate, so he paid for the creation of a new road (now called Hartley Down) that directed the public away from the house.

It can still be traced across the golf course on the 12th & 13th holes up to the house.

A description of the house in the early 20th century tells of a downstairs hall with diamond shaped tiles on the floor, a drawing room and a dining room which was the largest room. The Squire had a library downstairs and a secret room where he kept his guns.

The original public road (today called Hartley Old Road) was transferred to the Squire and became a gated driveway to the house.

Today, the village on top of the hill is known as Old Coulsdon, and Coulsdon Manor is situated near the village centre where you can find the pretty conservation area of Bradmore Green with its village pond, as well as Grange Park, the village shops, St Johns Church (which dates back to 11th century) and the Tudor Rose public House.

The Byron family ruled over the manor of Coulsdon for 140 years in total until 1921, when the last squire Edmund Byron died. Edmund died in May 1921 at the age of 77. The bells of St Johns Churched tolled 77 times as tenant farmers carried the body of Edmund across his beautiful park up to the church. With the last of the Coulsdon squires passing, the breakup of the Coulsdon Manor estate started quickly.

Golf has been played at Coulsdon Manor since the early 1900’s on a course designed by the legendary Harry S Colt. It is testimony to his work that even with the advances in golf club technology little has altered in the layout to this day yet it still presents a first class test of golfing ability to the high and low handicapper alike.

THE COURSE

The course is laid out at the top of the hill in Coulsdon having some commanding views over the surrounding areas.

Each hole is interesting and challenging in its own right, with no two holes the same.

The course has a number of challenging holes. Our signature hole is the picturesque 6th, with its elevated tee, any shot that is too far left will find its way out of bounds. Accuracy is key!

At 6014 yards from the white tees, it is not long by todays standards, but don’t drop your guard. Accuracy off the tee is vital to ensure you have the perfect angle to the flag.

Despite the lack of length, careful consideration must be given to each and every shot. Subtle changes in elevation make club selection very challenging. Once you find the putting surface more subtle undulations will keep you on your toes until the ball finds the bottom of the cup.

Visitors are warmly welcomed at Coulsdon Manor throughout the year, 7 days a week, subject to course availability. Please contact the professional shop prior to arrival to check availability for play to avoid times that may be booked for club matches or golf societies.

Visitors are asked to respect our rules, dress code and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs smoothly.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard and also to be competent with regards to the rules of golf so that you may enjoy your round to the fullest and also not to inconvenience other players out on the course.

Holders of the County Card scheme may receive a discounted green fee. Please enquire with a member of the pro shop staff when making your booking.

CLUBHOUSE AND CATERING

The Manor House offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax after a round of golf or simply just to meet up with friends.

Originally built in 1850, the manor house has been tastefully restored to its former glory. The beautiful country house retains many of its original features in addition to tastefully refurbished bedrooms.

The terrace bar and adjacent Orangery Brasserie provides everything from light meals and snacks with an informal atmosphere in the daytime through to something a little more special in the evenings. A choice of four function rooms including the large Blenheim and Manor House suites, both with their own terrace and private bar facilities, each accommodating up to 100 guests.

The staff will make you feel welcome whether you are playing the course or just coming in for a drink and something to eat. In the warmer summer months you are able to sit on our beautiful terrace and enjoy the stunning views across the golf course.
