Club Crest

T

he griffin crest of Lansdown Golf Club stems from the armorial bearing of the Grenville family.

The griffin can be seen on the top of the monument to Sir Bevill Grenville, which stands a few hundred yards from the golf course, on the site of the Battle of Lansdown (1643).

Erected in 1714, the monument was dedicated to Sir Bevill Grenville slain in the battle supporting the Royal cause of Charles 1st. The griffin crest is believed to date back to Richard de Grenville, a distant relative of Sir Bevill Grenville. Richard de Grenville had Dukedoms conferred following his part in the invasion of England in 1066 with William the Conqueror.
