The Location Declared by Henry Cotton to be “Golf ’s best kept secret,” you will not get much more of a dramatic location than Sheringham Golf Course. Located high on gorse-clad cliff tops between the North Sea and the historic North Norfolk Railway, Sheringham is widely regarded as one of the county’s finest cliff top courses.

Sheringham, a pretty town on the Norfolk coast, with its extensive clean washed sands and shallow waters, is no more than a five-minute walk from Sheringham’s golfing green - with its cliff top setting, and surrounded by gorse. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you will feel like the Course has been part of the coastland forever. Views are truly magnificent, from the rolling white waves of the North Sea, on one

side, to rattling steam trains and vintage diesels on the other. In fact the westward view from the course, including Blakeney Point is considered by many members and visitors alike to be the best golf course view in the country.

Our course Sheringham Golf Course is a pleasure to play. Its undulating fairways and fast, true greens mean that you will enjoy an exciting game whilst experiencing the breathtaking beauty of the Norfolk coastline. Sheringham is a refreshingly challenging 18- hole course, noted for its long par 4 holes. Factor in North Sea winds and you have yourself a serious test of golf. Originally designed over nine holes in 1891, seven years later the course was extended to a par 70 of 6,456 yards. The course is mainly flat with some moderate climbs. Long par fours test even the lowest handicappers, more so when the wind howls. As an example, you must be on form to par the 456-yard fifth par four hole to a plateau green.

The most memorable holes are those running close to the cliff edge - notably on the third, fifth and seventh. It is the 5th hole that makes Sheringham famous, and for good reason. Playing from a raised tee, you are met by a spectacular view of the course as you approach the teeing ground; the North Norfolk coastline stretching for miles in the distance. The cliffs are very much in play all the way down the right hand side of the hole. They are only fifteen yards from the fairway at some points and a sheer drop of 40-50 feet awaits any sliced tee shots. Bunkers and gorse guard the left hand side of the fairway making the 5th the most demanding tee shot on the course.

The first of the par 3’s comes at the 6th. The hole forms part of a famous two hole stretch for which the club is renowned. The hole is long at 210 yards and is played from a raised tee; the hole drops 30-40 feet with the stunning Norfolk coastline stretching into the distance. Sheringham also has a large practice area with bunkers and facilities including pitching areas; practice nets and practice putting greens.

The Club’s History Sheringham Golf Club has a charm that belongs all to itself, and boasts a distinguished history. The course itself is a hundred and twenty years old, and the Clubhouse recently celebrated its Centenary. Designed in 1891 by Tom Dunn, one of the pioneers of British golf course design, the nine-hole course was extended to eighteen-holes by Dunn in autumn 1898. The building at the heart of Sheringham Golf Club has been standing since 1912 - withstanding squalling storms, collapsing cliffs and sliced drives from off-form golfers. The first Clubhouse on

the current site was built for ÂŁ123 by Boulton and Paul of Norwich in 1895. Today, photographs of the great Harry Vardon who partnered James Braid in a 36 holes foursomes match at Sheringham against JH Taylor and Arnaud Massy in September 1908 (all were Open Champions) as well as other historical artefacts line both sides of the Clubhouse corridor, providing a unique atmosphere steeped in history and tradition.

clubhouse for members. Plans are in the pipeline to modernise our pavilion and golf club. While it will retain its valuable traditions, it will be more progressive, with facilities developed that are in keeping with a modern-day club. This will include the redevelopment of the existing clubhouse, bunker refurbishment and development, shaping/contouring of fairways and aprons, plus an irrigation system for the course.

Sheringham Golf Club is, however, keen to move with the times. We now have golf tuition plus the use of the traditional

Take the Course Tour Hole 1 (Henry Craske) A gentle opening par 4 which will require a tee shot up the right half of the fairway and a short iron to a well guarded green. Hole 2 (Town View) A good drive down the left side of the fairway will allow the long hitters to reach the green in two shots; however well placed bunkers will make all golfers think of where to place their second shots to allow a good angle to the green.

Hole 3 (Lifeboat) A very good long par 4 that is well protected by bunkers that requires a good drive and long iron to a large elevated green, club selection is essential if you wish to avoid being faced with a long putt. Hole 4 (Skelding Hill) A short par 4, avoid the left hand fairway bunker to leave yourself a short iron to the raised green.

12 | www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 5 (Fulmars) Sheringham’s “signature hole” with spectacular views. This is a fantastic par 4 that requires a good drive between 3 fairway bunkers that will leave a long second shot to a plateau green, avoid the mound on the front right to find the green. Hole 6 (Old Hythe) A good par 3 from an elevated tee, club selection is essential; avoid the bunkers on the left and balls will feed into the green from the mounds.

Hole 7 (Pop Shop) A long straight drive will allow players to reach the green in 2 but beware the second shot as 2 fairway bunkers will catch any offline shot. Hole 8 (Pretty Corner) A slightly uphill and lovely par 3 that will receive an accurate tee shot, bunkers await all around this green.

Hole 11 (Riseboro) A charming par 3 with an undulating, two tier green, accuracy is a must and middle of the green is always good.

Hole 9 (Upchers) A great driving hole where drives should be just inside the right hand bunker, this will then leave a second shot that should be pitched to the centre of the green in order to avoid the steep slope that guards the front of the green. Hole 10 (The Warren) The best driving hole on the course, drives will need to be straight to avoid well placed fairway bunkers, this will leave a long second to an uphill undulating green, always take one more club.

Hole 12 (Charity) A dog leg left to right, drives should be down the right side of the fairway leaving a second shot that will need to be accurate to a green that runs a little away from you.

www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk | 13

Take the Course Tour Hole 13 (Spinney) An uphill right to left dogleg; avoid the gorse on the right from the tee to leave a medium iron to an angled green. Beware the greenside bunker left. Hole 14 (Dead Man’s) A straight drive is required to leave a medium iron to a long green that is well bunkered.

Hole 15 (Poppy Line) A demanding par 3 that requires a straight long iron to a well bunkered green. Hole 16 (The Pit) Tee shots should be played down the left half of the fairway to leave a short iron from an upslope to a sometimes blind green.

14 | www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk

Long hitters can attempt to reach the plateau but beware the nest of bunkers that await the off line tee shot.

Hole 17 (What Train) Risk and Reward. A drive down the right side will give you extra yardage but beware the out of bounds over the railway line with steam trains running at regular intervals during winter and summer. The second shot has to be accurate and plays longer than it looks.

Hole 18 (Shannock) Aim at the clubhouse to leave a long second shot to a green that runs away from you, a well placed bunker on the top of the hill and the out of bounds over the railway line on the right

The Clubhouse The welcome has always been warm at Sheringham Golf Club, and nowhere more than inside its Clubhouse. The iconic coastal Clubhouse has stood since 1912. It is the place to unwind with friends and family, before or after a round, or simply to socialise. With its Centenary year achieved, the building has retained its original charm and character. Traditional and with a unique atmosphere, stepping inside this prestigious venue almost feels like going back in time.

During the winter months, there is a warm lounge open fire and coffee available to give you the perfect start to the day. The Dining Room is available for a full breakfast if booked in advance and our lunch is regarded by many as one of the best available at any golf club. The Dining Room can accommodate up to 80 people and society groups of 12 or more qualify for the Society Rate on offer. Jacket and tie will be required for all groups taking lunch in the Dining Room.

During the summer months, there is a sheltered patio area for those wishing to enjoy the sunshine. Drinks may be ordered from the bar, and lunch taken outside if so wished. Those who do not wish to change into a jacket and tie for lunch in the Dining Room can opt to have lunch in the 19th, an area of the restaurant between the lounge and the more formal restaurant, where a more relaxed dress code is accepted.

Famous Past Members and Professional Players We have had some very famous and distinguished names playing at Sheringham. Golfing legends who have played the course include Arnaud Massy, Harry Vardon, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sandy Lee. Other stars have been spotted on the fairways - and in the bunkers. The Clubhouse rooms and bar have also hosted numerous famous names. In its early years, explorers Captain Robert Falcon Scott (better known as Scott of the Antarctic) and Ernest Shackleton were club members, along with Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

It is widely understood that Sir Arthur got the name for one of his most famous characters from an encounter, here, at Sheringham Golf Club. It is said that Conan Doyle played a match against a certain club member, which he lost. He was so annoyed that he used the man’s name for Holmes’ arch-nemesis in his books - the criminal mastermind, Professor Moriarty.

Championships and Events Sheringham Golf Club has a distinguished golfing history and is proud to have hosted many major amateur events, including The English Ladies’ Golf Championships and The English Boys’ Championships. As well as hosting the championship in 1950 and 1991, Sheringham has been privileged to host many major and county events, the most recent being the Senior Ladies’ Home International matches in September 2010, in which England triumphed over

Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Club is also proud to host many Norfolk County events, both ladies and gents, and was the chosen venue for the South East Counties Seniors’ championships in September 2011. A hundred years ago, Sheringham hosted the very first County Ladies Championships, so it was a great honour to host them again at Sheringham in the Centenary year.

Playing Categories - LADIES Ladies have been golfing at Sheringham Golf Club since 1891, and it has been the venue for the English Ladies’ Championships three times. However, for ladies the golden time of Sheringham Golf Club begins nationally with Joyce Wethered’s success on the course in the English Ladies’ Golf Championship in June 1920 when she triumphed over the then reigning Champion Miss Cecil Leitch in a 36 hole final, winning on the 35th hole. Miss Wethered went on to win five successive English titles and four of the six British championships in which she competed.

More recently, Sheringham has been privileged to host the Senior Ladies’ Home International matches in September 2010 in which England triumphed over Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

New members are always welcome so if you would like to join our ladies section, please contact the Secretary on 01263 823488 or go to our Web site and download the PDF membership form.

Ladies’ Day is a Tuesday when we have our regular medal and Stableford competitions sprinkled with friendly games, club competitions for the various trophies, open and invitation days. There are always lots of opportunities to play golf and socialise.

Playing Categories - SENIORS The Club has a thriving Seniors section with currently around 100 golfers on its books. A range of golfing activities is provided in a competitive but friendly environment with an emphasis on enjoyment. There is a wide range of golfing talents from single figure to 28 handicappers. A competition is held each Wednesday morning and while normally you just turn up and play, the competition on the first Wednesday of each month is a drawn team fun event, such as a Texas

Scramble, which is followed by an optional lunch. There are several cup competitions over the course of the year and two knockout competitions during the summer. The Section has a full programme of home and away matches against the Senior Sections of other Norfolk Clubs and these provide an excellent opportunity to make new friends and play at the many other splendid Courses in the County.

Why not come along and join in. All male members of the Club over 55 years of age are eligible and you will be assured of a warm welcome. Please get in touch with Len Turner, one of the organisers of the Section, if you would like more information.

Sheringham Golf Club is home to a spectacular and challenging course located on a beautiful stretch of cliff tops between the Norfolk Railway and the North Sea, and only a five-minute walk from the small town of Sheringham. The course celebrated its Centenary in 1991 and remains one of the most picturesque in the region - the view from the 5th tee is one of the most memorable in golf! Steeped in a rich heritage, golfing legends that have played Sheringham’s exhilarating course include Arnaud Massy and Harry Vardon. We are also proud to have hosted many major amateur events, in addition to numerous Norfolk County events. Our magnificent clubhouse truly stands the test of time. Built in 1912 and with great traditional charm, it is the ideal place to unwind before, or after, a game, or simply to socialise. Our Dining Room offers excellent food all year round as well as an old-fashioned sense of genuine hospitality.

We are available for catering parties. Whilst retaining its valuable traditions, Sheringham Golf Club is also progressive, with facilities in keeping with any modern-day club. Our well-stocked shop offers a wide range of apparel and accessories, and trolleys and buggies may be hired. We have a large practice area with bunkers and facilities. Sheringham Golf Club offers something for everyone - from experienced players to beginners. Our facilities are open to the General Public and visitors are always welcome.
