Amsterdam Year after year this vibrant, fun-loving city attracts and delights countless visitors with its charms and unique sights. It’s hard to think of any other major European city which is as varied as this impressive city, with its numerous canals, narrow winding streets and curious business premises. Particularly worth seeing are, above all, the Van Gogh Museum and Rijks Museum, the Anne Frank House, the numerous Amsterdam sacred buildings and the beautifully laid out city parks and gardens. An absolute must on a visit to Amsterdam is going on a canal tour, taking you through the narrow network of canals and giving you a unique perspective of this really beautiful city.

12

Your Cruise DAY 1 Amsterdam

Your Tulip Cruise starts out from the Dutch city of canals, Amsterdam, where your AMADEUS vessel awaits. After boarding there’s plenty of time in the afternoon to explore your floating hotel before we invite you to join us for a welcome cocktail in the Panorama-Bar in the evening. Afterwards the crew will get you in the mood for your cruise with an exclusive welcome dinner. The vessel will stay in Amsterdam overnight.

DAY 2 Amsterdam / Volendam

After breakfast those interested can take a city tour of Amsterdam. This is a chance to discover the main sights of this metropolis and pay a visit to the worldfamous flower market – and of course a trip on a canal is a must! Alternatively you can visit the worldfamous Van Gogh museum – nowhere else in the world are so many works by this Post-Impressionist painter housed under one roof. At midday the AMADEUS vessel sails from Amsterdam heading north. Here we cross the 1,100 km2 IJsselmeer and in the afternoon reach the picturesque fishing village of Volendam, the starting point for our trip to northern Holland. After a walk through the village, you’ll have the chance to visit a regional cheese dairy to watch Holland’s most popular export being made before taking a trip to the small town of Edam with its world-famous cheese market. In the evening you return to the vessel and we set off for Arnhem the same night.

DAY 3 Arnhem

Take this opportunity to enjoy the impressive views of the river landscapes from the sun deck in the morning. We arrive in Arnhem just in time for lunch at midday. The varied afternoon program has something to suit everyone. There’s a trip to the local open-air museum with its 85 historic buildings, offering exciting insight into the daily lives of people in the past, whilst the ‘Bridge of Arnhem’ tour takes visitors to this former Second World War battlefield and includes a trip to the Airborne Museum Hartenstein. Art enthusiasts are recommended to visit the Kröller Müller Museum in nearby Otterlo. This is home to the world’s second largest Van Gogh collection and its special highlight is undoubtedly the 25 ha sculpture park. In the evening we leave Arnhem and set off for Middelbourg.

DAY 4 Middelbourg

We arrive in the small town of Middelbourg at midday on the fourth day of your trip. Two different excursions are on offer in the afternoon, both equally appealing. During a tour of the town you can visit the smallest university in the country as well as gain an insight into the rich history of the town with its impressive monuments and picturesque facades. Alternatively you can take a trip to the imposing

Bruges

Delta Works – a pioneering architectural project established in 1953 following the devastating flood catastrophe. Today it serves as a protection against flooding and storm surges. Afterwards the trip takes you to the historic trading town of Veere before you return to the vessel and set sail from Middelbourg in the early evening.

DAY 5 Ghent

Overnight we cross the border into Belgium and reach the city of Ghent in the early morning, where the cruise vessel will be docked all day. Those who wish can take a tour of Ghent in the morning and visit the sights of Belgium’s third largest city, such as St. Bavo Cathedral with its 85 m clock tower and the city centre which has protected monument status. In the afternoon you can enjoy a tour of the town of Bruges. The centre of this former European Capital of Culture has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 and has numerous historic treasures to offer including the impressive Church of Our Lady and the belfry tower, the most important tower in the city, which offers unrivalled views of Bruges from a height of 83 metres and with 366 steps to climb. After the trip there’s plenty of time for a gentle stroll through Ghent before your AMADEUS vessel sets sail for Antwerp in the evening.

Visit Bruges and experience a fascinating journey back in time to the Middle Ages! The historic centre of the city is extraordinarily well preserved and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

13

DAY 6 Antwerp

Your AMADEUS vessel arrives in Antwerp in Belgium early in the morning. After breakfast you can explore the city yourself or take a city tour. Antwerp is one of the world’s most important centres of diamond trading as well as home to the largest Gothic church in the Netherlands, the ‘Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal’ containing some valuable paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. Those interested can take a trip to the Belgian capital of Brussels in the afternoon. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore this lively city, capital of the European Union. You’ll have the chance to discover world-famous sights such as the Manneken Pis, Atomium and royal residence. When you’re back on board, you’ll be greeted by the captain inviting you to enjoy an elegant gala dinner before whiling away the evening in the panorama bar while the vessel sets sail for the Netherlands.

Boat cruise through Amsterdam‘s canals

DAY 7 Kinderdijk / Utrecht / Amsterdam

On your penultimate morning we arrive in Kinderdijk, a small Dutch town famous for its windmills were you’ll find a total of 19 wind pumps dating from the 18th century. The mills have been replaced by more efficient pumps but many of the old structures still remain and can be visited as part of a tour. Anyone wishing to see these distinctive Dutch landmarks with their own eyes can do so during our morning excursion to Kinderdijk. At midday the vessel sets sail for Utrecht where the highlight of your Tulip Cruise awaits: a visit to the world-famous Keukenhof flower park. This beautiful green area is only open to guests for 8 weeks of the year and during this time there are more tulips in flower here than anywhere else in the world. Over 7 million bulbs are planted here each year and each season visitors from all over the world come to the Keukenhof flower park to attend more than 30 flower shows and explore a 15 km long network of footpaths and the largest sculpture park in the Netherlands. After this trip a coach will take you to Amsterdam where your AMADEUS vessel is ready and waiting. During your last evening on board you can enjoy a Dutch folklore show in line with the theme of the trip and have a chance to reflect on your adventurepacked day.

DAY 8 Amsterdam Keukenhof Gardens, one of Europe‘s most magical corners

One of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Holland, the Keukenhof, is to be found between Amsterdam and The Hague. The extensive gardens are open from March to May, at which time there are more than seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths in full flower, delighting visitors to the park with their magnificent display of colour. 14

After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye to the crew on board. The disembarkation in Amsterdam takes place in the course of the morning and the AMADEUS team will be on hand to help you with checking out. They’re already looking forward to your next visit!

Your Cruise DAY 1 Amsterdam

You start your European adventure with a relaxed embarkation in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam where the AMADEUS crew welcome you on board. First you can take a tour of the cruise ship which will be your home for the next two weeks, or take an afternoon stroll to explore the city on your own. After an evening welcome cocktail at the PanoramaBar, our chef will spoil you with a carefully devised welcome dinner to get you in the mood for an unforgettable trip. The vessel will spend the night in Amsterdam.

Three rivers converging from three directions characterise the landscape of the three rivers region in Passau and define its unique beauty – the Danube from the west, the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north.

Passau

DAY 2 Amsterdam / Utrecht

In the morning we take a trip around the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. During the tour you’ll visit the best-known sights of this lively harbour city and also have the chance to explore the romantic canals of Amsterdam. Afterwards a comfortable coach will take you to Utrecht in Holland where your AMADEUS

24

vessel is already waiting. At lunch time your floating hotel will set off for the Rhine metropolis of Cologne where we arrive the next morning. You can spend a relaxing afternoon on board admiring the beautiful views of the river landscapes from the sun deck.

DAY 3 Cologne

After breakfast we arrive in the Rhine capital of Cologne, a fascinating city attracting countless visitors from all over the world each year with its lively history. A guided tour of the city in the morning will take you to the historic old town with its world-famous Cologne Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. In the afternoon we take a trip to Königswinter at the foot of the Siebengebirge hills, some 40 km away. The imposing ruins of the Drachenfels fortress tower over the city, reminding us of the romantic Rhineland poets who once drew inspiration from this site. After an adventure-packed day we return to the vessel in the early evening and set sail from Cologne to the south during dinner.

DAY 4 Koblenz / Rüdesheim

We reach Koblenz in the early morning. Here you can take a guided walking tour after breakfast, taking in some of the town’s most important sights in the ‘German Corner’ area. Afterwards we visit what’s probably the most famous sight along the Rhine – the legendary Loreley in the Middle Rhine valley, associated with the romantic history of the Rhine and renowned for its sad legend. Guests who choose to stay on board in the morning can

admire the imposing views of the Loreley Rock from the water and take part in a tour of the picturesque town of Rüdesheim in the afternoon. This town in the state of Hesse is one of Germany’s biggest tourist attractions. The famous Drosselgasse alone attracts over 3 million visitors each year and a visit to ‘Siegfrieds Mechanical Music Museum’ is highly recommended. In the late afternoon we set off again, switching from the Rhine to the Main.

DAY 5 Miltenberg / Wertheim

This stage of our journey is all about the towns on the Main. At midday we reach Miltenberg where you can take part in a guided tour through the picturesque alleyways. The medieval town is dominated in particular by the Mildenburg fortress, built in 1200 and towering over everything. We then continue to neighbouring Wertheim where you can enjoy a walk around the town and then pay a visit to the famous Wertheim glass museum. In the meantime the ship will continue to Wertheim and before dinner will take you further along the Main to Würzburg.

to a memorial site and permanent ‘Fascination and Terror’ exhibition, providing insights into the dark days and events here during the Second World War. After the trip we return to our vessel which leaves Nuremberg in the early evening. Shortly after we cross the European watershed separating the Main from the Danube.

DAY 9 Kelheim / Regensburg

In the morning we reach Kelheim where there’s a trip to Weltenburg Abbey after breakfast. The Benedictine abbey was founded in around 620 and today is known as Germany’s oldest abbey. Enjoy a tour through the holy site and then enjoy a glass of the famous Weltenburg dark beer. The beer’s still brewed here today and has won the ‘World Beer Award’ on many occasions. During your tour your vessel will continue to Regensburg where you rejoin it for lunch. In the afternoon you can take a tour of the town and visit the world-famous Stone Bridge. In the evening there’s a Bavarian evening on board in tune with the regional theme while the vessel continues to Passau.

Explore the heart of Rüdesheim’s old town, the Drosselgasse, where there are lots of wine taverns and patios just waiting to be explored.

DAY 6 Würzburg

In the morning we reach the Bavarian city of Würzburg. The romantic landscape indicates that this region is heavily influenced by winegrowing – and so sampling the wines at the historic wine cellars of the Würzburg Residenz palace is a must! Before this, take a tour of the city and discover its most important sights. After lunch, we offer an excursion to the mediaeval town of Rothenburg. This historic old town offers visitors a wide range of memorable buildings such as St. Jakob’s church with its distinctive ‘holy blood altar’ carved by Tilman Riemenschneider. In the evening we set off for Bamberg.

DAY 7 Bamberg

You’ll spend the morning on board enjoying fantastic views of the Main. In the afternoon we arrive in the imperial town of Bamberg, a World Heritage Site since 1993. Our tour of the town is a must and includes the New Residence, Old Town Hall and Imperial Cathedral with its 4 towers. When you’re back on board, your AMADEUS vessel will set sail along the Main-Danube canal and there’s an evening talk about this important waterway which you’re very welcome to attend!

DAY 8 Nuremberg

Welcome to Nuremberg! After breakfast there’s a city tour to some of the most important sights along with a visit to the romantic old town of Nuremberg before returning to your AMADEUS vessel. After lunch you can take a trip to the Nuremberg documentation centre. The former National Socialist Party parade ground extends over 11 km2 and is currently home

Rhine-Main-Danube Canal

DAY 10 Passau / Linz

Our next destination is the town of Passau where the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers join. You can participate in a guided walk to learn all about the town’s lively history. Alternatively you can take a day trip to the Mozart city of Salzburg, home to one of the best preserved city centres to the north of the Alps. While you’re out, your AMADEUS vessel will continue to Linz where passengers can re-join the ship in the evening after their excursions. Those who do not opt for the Salzburg trip can take a tour of Linz in Upper Austria before the vessel sets sail for romantic Wachau in the evening.

DAY 11 Melk, Emmersdorf / Dürnstein

In the early morning we arrive in Melk/Emmersdorf based in the world-famous cultural landscapes of Wachau. Here those who wish can take a trip to the Benedictine Melk Abbey which introduces guests to its lively history in a refreshingly modern way in the

The Rhine-MainDanube Canal is a federal waterway some 171 kilometres (106 miles) in length connecting the Main at Bamberg with the Danube in Kelheim. With the canal, which was opened in 1992, a continuous waterway, 3,500 km (2,175 miles) in length, was created from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

abbey museum. After the trip we set sail again and in the afternoon reach Dürnstein, probably the bestknown wine-growing region in Wachau. Here you can visit the romantic old town and find out what once linked proud Richard the Lionheart with this small town. After a wine tasting session, it’s time to return to your vessel which sets sail from Wachau to Vienna overnight.

DAY 12 Vienna

Today is all about exploring the Austrian capital. In the morning you can enjoy a city tour, taking in some of the best known monuments and magnificent buildings in this Danube metropolis. In the afternoon there’s a trip to the majestic Schönbrunn Palace with its imposing gardens (one of Vienna’s most beautiful buildings) and in the evening you can enjoy a performance of ‘Sound of Vienna´ at Vienna’s Kursalon where the ‘Alt Wien’ orchestra plays popular melodies from Vienna’s classical era. The vessel leaves Vienna after midnight and crosses the border into Slovakia.

DAY 13 Bratislava

Rustling newspapers, friendly waiters and the scent of freshly ground coffee: experience the typical Viennese coffee house culture – awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2011. 26

We arrive in Bratislava during breakfast. In the morning you can take a coach tour to visit some of the main sights in the Slovakian capital, not forgetting a detour to the world famous Bratislava Castle. At lunchtime we return to the vessel before taking a trip to the imperial Schlosshof palace in the afternoon, Austria’s largest rural castle and at one time the country estate of Empress Maria Theresia. This evening, the exclusive captain’s gala dinner takes place on board as your vessel leaves Bratislava for Hungary.

DAY 14 Budapest

This final stage takes you to the magnificent Hungarian capital of Budapest in the morning. You can take a guided tour to explore the city’s fascinating sights. In the afternoon there are two equally exciting excursions to choose from. The tour to Gödöllö Castle combines culture with entertainment and, after a tour of the castle, we take a detour to a typically Hungarian farmyard where a lively horse show awaits! The alternative program includes a trip to the artists’ colony of Szentendre with its numerous galleries and museums, including that of the famous ceramics artist Margit Kovács. During your last evening on board you can enjoy a Hungarian folklore show followed by a romantic evening cruise through Budapest.

DAY 15 Budapest

Disembarkation is after breakfast. The AMADEUS team wish you a good trip home and hope to welcome you back on board soon!

After you’ve gained your first impressions of the AMADEUS vessel, the cruise manager will invite you to enjoy a welcome cocktail in the Panorama -Bar before our crew pamper you with a carefully created welcome dinner in the elegant on-board restaurant. The vessel will set sail in the early evening and travel upstream towards Regensburg.

In the evening you can enjoy a Bavarian evening on board the vessel which will introduce you to the local customs while your vessel departs from Regensburg and sets off for Passau.

DAY 3 Passau / Linz

Avignon The really beautiful city of Avignon, with its winding narrow streets and numerous palaces and churches, is to be found in Provence in the South of France. Standing imperiously right by the banks of the Rhône is the imposing Papal Palace dating from the 14th century, which was used as the residence for various popes and antipopes between 1335 and 1430. Like the rest of Avignon’s historic Old Town, the Papal Palace is today also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the most impressive Gothic buildings in the world. Your Cruise DAY 1 Lyon

Your cruise through the sunny south of France starts as you board in Lyon in the afternoon. The crew of the MS AMADEUS Symphony await and are on hand to help you with check-in. Then there’s time to explore the cruise ship before you’re invited to the Panorama-Bar for a cocktail reception. In the evening an elegant welcome dinner is served in our restaurant before the AMADEUS Symphony sets sail for Mâcon.

DAY 2 Mâcon

In the morning the vessel reaches the town of Mâcon in southern Burgundy. You can enjoy an excursion into the surrounding Mâconnais wine country before lunch to explore the magical vineyards and be captivated by the Mediterranean charm of this unique region. The program also includes a visit to the regional wine museum which provides plenty of information about the history of wine production in Burgundy. Then it’s time to return to your AMADEUS vessel for lunch before taking a guided tour of the Cluny Abbey ruins in the afternoon. During the Middle Ages up to 10,000 monks lived at this site which was largely destroyed during the French Revolution. The abbey was once the spiritual centre of Europe, as is reflected by the remains of the fiveaisled church building. In the evening you return to the vessel and set sail from Mâcon upstream along the Saône.

DAY 3 Chalon-sur-Saône / Tournus

On the third day we reach Chalon-sur-Saône, the second largest city in Burgundy and the northernmost point of our trip. The best way to explore the beauty of the region is the ‘Beaune and Burgundy’ trip which takes you to the world-famous wine-growing regions of Pommard, Chassagne and Puligny in Beaune (known as the ‘wine capital of Burgundy’). There’s also a chance, of course, to sample the regional wines after the tour! Those who wish can take a trip in the afternoon to the mediaeval town of Brancion further south which is home to an intact 12th century church. From here it’s on to neighbouring Cormatin, where the world-famous Cormatin moated castle is situated on an island on the river Grosne. Built in the 17th century, the protected monument attracts over 70,000 visitors each year. At the end of your trip, a comfortable coach will transport you back to Tournus where the AMADEUS Symphony awaits, ready to set sail back to Lyon.

DAY 4 Lyon

Early in the morning, we reach Lyon – the city where the Saône and Rhône rivers meet. Lyon is France’s third largest city after Paris and Marseille and is renowned for its exquisite cuisine and the beautiful old town which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. During a morning tour you can

Burgundy

explore the city’s monuments and sights, including the imposing Notre Dame de Fourvière basilica, the Roman theatre and the ‘Vieux Lyon’ quarter. Around midday the vessel will leave the city and head off along the Rhône towards Avignon where you arrive the next morning. The afternoon on board is ideally spent on the sun desk, offering fantastic views of the delightful river landscapes of southern France.

DAY 5 Avignon

This morning we arrive in Avignon, the town of the popes. No other town in France had such an enormous significance for the clerical world during the Middle Ages as Avignon. You can discover the history of the town and the lives of the 7 popes who once resided here during a tour of the winding alleyways and a visit to the Gothic Papal Palace. A visit to the world-famous ‘Pont d‘ Avignon’ is also a must during this walking tour of the town. The bridge is the subject of a popular folk song and once spanned the river Rhône. Of the 22 bridge arches which once existed here, only 4 remain. The afternoon also focuses on an architectural masterpiece, taking you to the ‘Pont du Gard’ monument 25 km away: this three-level aqueduct was originally 50 km long and was constructed over 2,000 years ago in Roman

Some of the most beautiful and well-known winegrowing areas in the region are to be found up river in the northern part of the Saône. Visit, for example, the stunningly beautiful Mâcon region, known for its Mediterranean ambience and outstanding Chardonnay. You’ll be simply enchanted by the magnificent view of the surrounding vineyards and their lovely chateaux and castles!

times to transport water to the town of Nîmes and other Roman provinces. After the tour we pay a visit to the romantic town of Uzès before heading back to your AMADEUS vessel.

DAY 6 Avignon / Arles

‘Taste of Provence‘ on the Sun Deck

‘Live the life of Riley‘ in France – set off on a culinary voyage of discovery through the ‘Grande Nation’ and experience with all your senses why French cuisine has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status since 2010. An unforgettable Provençal lunch on the sundeck is a must!

After all of these cultural highlights the morning is all about exploring the green surroundings. After breakfast, a comfortable coach will take you from Avignon to the Camargue Nature Park built in 1970 and covering an area of approx. 86,000 ha. Each year the unique flora and fauna of the landscape attract numerous visitors to this conservation area, which is renowned in particular for its semi-wild bulls, unique Camargue horses and rare bird species. Afterwards, the coach will take you back to Arles where the AMADEUS Symphony is waiting to welcome you back on board for lunch. In the afternoon you can enjoy a tour of Arles. This small French community has a beautiful historic centre and is renowned in particular for its preserved amphitheatre built by the Romans in around 90 AD and once seating over 25,000 spectators. Afterwards it’s time to return to the vessel where we set sail for the medieval town of Viviers after dinner.

DAY 7 Viviers / Le Pouzin

Pont Lafayette in Lyon

We arrive in Viviers in southern France during breakfast. This is the starting point for an unforgettable trip to one of the world’s most spectacular natural monuments – the Ardèche gorge. It is often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of Europe’ and, with a depth of up to 300 m, impresses both tourists and sports enthusiasts alike. The entrance of the gorge is indicated by the ‘Pont d’ Arc’ – a 60 m high natural stone arch which is the largest natural bridge in the world. Specially designed viewing platforms offer spectacular views of this unique natural wonder. Don’t forget to take some photos before you return to the AMADEUS Symphony which has now made its way to Le Pouzin. Your last evening on board involves a special culinary highlight as the captain invites you to a gala dinner. While away the evening in the Panorama-Bar or AMADEUS Club and enjoy the views of the beautiful Rhône river landscapes as your vessel heads north.

DAY 8 Lyon

After breakfast, we arrive back in Lyon where your tour of southern France comes to an end after an adventure-packed week! The AMADEUS Symphony team thank you for your stay and wish you a pleasant trip home!

Paris The ‘city of light’ appeals with its seemingly endless range of sights. The Eiffel Tower (or ‘la Tour Eiffel’ as the French call it) is probably the city’s most significant monument and shapes the Paris skyline with its elegant Art Nouveau design. Gustave Eiffel built the tower (then the highest in the world at 320 m) as a temporary structure for the World Exhibition in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Your Cruise DAY 1 Paris

Boarding of the MS AMADEUS Diamond begins in the late afternoon in Paris. There’s plenty of time to get to know your floating hotel before the AMADEUS team welcome you on board with a cocktail in the Panorama-Bar. In the evening, the on board chef will serve a carefully devised welcome dinner. During dinner the vessel will depart from Paris and set off north for Conflans.

DAY 2 Conflans

During breakfast your vessel will arrive in the medieval town of Conflans. From here you can set off on an excursion which will introduce you to the famous expressionist artists in the small town of Auvers-surOise. Many of the great masters (including Cezanne, Pissarro and Daubigny) moved here, the most famous being Vincent van Gogh whose last resting place is right here in this town. Enjoy a multi-media show at the Château d’Auvers where the modern museum takes you on a trip back to the 19th century and presents some of the greatest French artists and their best-known works. After this trip it’s time to return to the AMADEUS Diamond where you can reflect on the memories of the day while the vessel sets off from Conflans in the early evening.

DAY 3 Rouen / Caudebec en Caux

This morning, we reach the town of Rouen in northern France. During the morning you can take a guided tour to explore the town. A visit to the beautiful mediaeval town centre is a must, along with the imposing Gothic cathedral and ‘Le Gros Horloge’, one of the world’s oldest astrological timepieces. Also worth a visit is the ‘Eglise Sainte-Jeanne D‘arc’ church where a monument now marks the spot where Joan of Arc was executed. Then it’s time to return to the AMADEUS Diamond for lunch before the vessel sets sail for Caudebec en Caux. This small community is the ideal starting point for numerous exciting excursions in Normandy. A tour along the so-called ‘Abbey Road’ offers a chance to see many of these beautiful buildings: countless churches, castles and abbeys await along this romantic route. Some of the buildings have fallen into disrepair over the course of the centuries, such as the former Jumieges Abbey which is now open to the public.

DAY 4 Caudebec en Caux

Today there are two excursions to give you a chance to draw inspiration from the magnificent natural landscapes of Normandy. During the morning you can join us on a walk along the coast of Etretat. The steep chalk cliffs with their imposing needle-like formations have inspired many great artists including Boudin, Monet and Manet. In the afternoon those who wish can take a trip to Honfleur. This small town is one of the most beautiful treasures of the

Honfleur

Côte Fleurie and you can take a stroll along the picturesque old harbour basin dating from the 17th century and explore the nostalgic cobble-stoned alleyways of the romantic old town. In the evening it’s time to return to the vessel and spend the night in Caudebec en Caux.

DAY 5 Caudebec en Caux

Today you can choose between two exciting all-day excursions – both equally appealing. The first takes you along the famous Normandy beaches where the allied troops landed in 1944. During the tour you’ll visit the landing sites at Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach, the American cemetery in Colleville and the former Arromanches harbour which the allied forces built to transport further troops to land. As an alternative, you can take a tour to Bayeux and Caen which focuses on the treasures of the landscape. With lush green meadows, rustic half-timbered houses and apple orchards as far as the eye can see, Normandy quite rightly impresses visitors, year in, year out. You’ll visit the historic towns of Caen and Bayeux where you can walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy and subsequent King of England. Later you can explore the community of Pont l’éveque which is famous for its cheeses. It’s also home to numerous traditional half-timbered houses which you can admire as you take a gentle stroll through the area. In the evening, you will return to the AMADEUS Diamond before setting sail upstream.

Normandy is one of the most beautiful parts of France with delightful towns which will impress anyone loving this country. The picturesque harbour town of Honfleur at the mouth of the Seine makes a strong impression with its charming alleyways and picturesque half-timbered houses. Honfleur became known as a centre for artistic activities. Eugène Boudin, who painted coastal landscapes, was born there in 1814.

49

inspired the artist in many of his paintings. After lunch there’s a chance to visit one of the world’s best known buildings – the magnificent Palace of Versailles. Originally a small hunting lodge, the palace was extended to its current size under the rule of Louis XIV and is now one of Europe’s largest palaces. The tour takes you through the private regal rooms and into the world-famous Hall of Mirrors. A detour to the lush castle gardens is also a must. In the evening it’s time to head back to the AMADEUS Diamond with lots of new memories. The vessel travels from Les Andelys via Vernon to Poissy while you’re out and, once you’re back on board, continues to Paris.

DAY 7 Paris

The Gros Horloge, a fourteenth-century astronomical clock in Rouen

With its magnificent half-timbered buildings, narrow cobbled streets and the Gothic cathedral, Rouen is more like an open-air museum than a major city.

DAY 6 Les Andelys / Vernon / Poissy

This morning your AMADEUS vessel will arrive in Les Andelys, one of the most beautiful towns along the Seine. This is the starting point for a morning excursion to the Château Gaillard (built in 1196), the castle of Richard the Lionheart. Visitors can enjoy breath-taking views of the river and surrounding landscape. The tour then leads on to the town of Giverny, where the famous impressionist Claude Monet lived until his death in 1926. Take a look around his house and the magnificent garden which

Monet‘s famous garden at Giverny

50

Early in the morning we arrive back in the French capital of Paris where you can choose between several excursions. In the morning there’s a city tour taking in the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and the lively Champs Elysées. In the afternoon we visit the vibrant artists’ quarter of Montmartre, based on a hill in the northern part of the city. Alternatively we also offer a visit to the Louvre, home to some of the world’s most important works of art such as Da Vinci’s worldfamous Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Or you can set off on a tour of discovery through the aristocratic Le Marais district, known as the Jewish centre of the city and home to some true architectural treasures. As the crowning finale of the cruise, on your last evening you can enjoy a romantic boat trip by night through the illuminated city of Paris, showing off the metropolis in all its splendour.

DAY 8 Paris

Now it’s time to say ‘au revoir’, disembarkation beginning after breakfast. The crew of the AMADEUS Diamond wish you a relaxing trip home!

This morning you’ll find out more about Cambodia’s dark past, a comfortable coach taking you to the battle fields of Choeung Ek, 45 minutes away. What was once an idyllic orchard is now a mass grave and the best-known so-called ‘killing field’ where over 17,000 people were executed around 40 years ago during the bloody Khmer Rouge regime. Many of the victims were once prisoners at the nearby Tuol Sleng prison. We’ll visit the prison during the trip as well as the Choeung Ek memorial stupa and the small museum now based at the site of these ‘killing fields’. The afternoon is free for you to do as you wish again – either for a comfortable stroll through the capital or a shopping trip to pick up souvenirs for your loved ones back home. In the evening your ship will depart from Phnom Penh and set sail for neighbouring Vietnam.

DAY 7 Sa Dec / Cai Be / My Tho

This romantic colonial town is still virtually undiscovered by modern-day tourism and its authentic colonial buildings and traditional old villas always make a great impression on visitors who make it here. You can then take a 45-minute trip in a sampan boat along the narrow canals to visit a traditional brick factory before heading on to the local market in the centre of Sa Dec. The house of Hyun Thuy Le in particular is worth a visit. This is the man who once inspired the

Bagan and its temples To the southwest of Mandalay lies the historic city of Bagan, which is known far outside the country’s borders as home to more than 2,000 m² beautifully preserved temples. This mighty former royal city stretches of an area of more than 36 km² and, because of its incredible number of sacred buildings, ranks among Southeast Asia’s most important archaeological sites .

68

Your Cruise DAY 1 Yangon / Prome

At the start of your cruise you will make the relaxing journey from Myanmar’s largest city of Yangon to Prome, where the crew of the elegant ship ‘R.V. Irrawaddy Explorer’ will welcome you on board at midday with a welcome cocktail. The first trip of the cruise shows you to the centre of Prome. The city is both an important trading post and one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Myanmar. On returning to the vessel we set sail downstream to Thayet Myo.

DAY 2 Thayet Myo

The vessel sails into Thayet Myo during breakfast. The city is based on the right-hand banks of the Irrawaddy and is home to the oldest golf course in Myanmar, which you can visit during the morning excursion. The journey then leads on to the centre of the Burmese city where you‘ll visit a traditional market and some of the magnificent colonial houses built here during the days of British rule. Then it’s time to return to your cruise vessel for lunch before we set sail from Thayet Myo and head for Magwe. You‘ll spend the afternoon on board the Irrawaddy Explorer where you can enjoy fascinating views of the mighty Irrawaddy river, quite rightly known as the lifeline of the Golden Land.

DAY 3 Magwe

We arrive in Magwe in the morning. This town in the north-west of Myanmar is renowned in particular for its key exports – sesame and several kinds of nuts. After breakfast you‘ll have a chance to visit the landmark of the city, Myat Than Lun Paya, a beautiful pagoda of gold bricks dating from 1929, which offers fascinating views of the Irrawaddy from its hillside location. You return to your vessel before lunch and we then sail towards Salay for the rest of the day.

DAY 4 Salay / Than Kyi

On the fourth day of the trip we sail to Salay in the morning. This 13th century town is renowned for its shrines from the Bagan-era. During our morning excursion you‘ll explore the magnificent teak abbey and in particular the imposing Youqson Kyaung abbey, a typical example of British colonial architecture. After lunch on board, your vessel will continue to Tan Kyi where you can take a jeep tour of the Tan Kyi mountain. Vehicles from the Second World War will transport you up the hill in comfort. Here you will find four striking stupas which originally marked the four corners of the town. From here you can enjoy an impressive sunset – and we will stay here until twilight descends. The vessel sets sail again in the evening and travels overnight to the north.

Youqson-Kyaung abbey in Salay

DAY 5 Bagan

In Salay, fouded in the 13th century, you will find numerous shrines from the Bagan-era as well as some beautiful teak wooden abbeys dating from the 19th century. We visit the enormous wooden Youqson-Kyaung abbey which is a replica of the residence of the Crown Prince of Mandalay.

Today offers a real highlight. On arrival in Bagan in the early morning you can take a guided tour to a local market where you can observe the lively activity in the town. We will then visit the world-famous temple town of Bagan which is one of Asia’s most important archaeological sites. This former imperial town extends over 36 km2 and contains more than 2,000 preserved temples, stupas and brick palaces, just waiting to be explored. In the evening you can admire another fantastic sunset and the vessel will spend the night in Bagan.

DAY 6 Bagan / Shwe Pyi Thar

Today you can take a guided tour of the lively town of Bagan with its local markets which specialise in wood carvings and textiles. Alternatively, you can explore the town on your own by hiring a bike or exploring on foot. In the afternoon the vessel will continue to the village of Shwe Pyi Thar where a stroll along the river will provide you with a deep insight into the life and culture of Myanmar. In the afternoon you return to the vessel and we set sail towards the north.

DAY 7 Yandabo

During breakfast we reach Yandabo, a picturesque small town which is famous in particular for its terracotta pots. Yandabo has gone down in history as the place where the peace treaty was signed in 1826, ending the first Anglo-Burmese war. A landbased excursion to the local pottery workshops will enable you to find out about the traditional methods of making ceramic products, before you visit a local school and abbey. Your vessel will set sail from Yandabo again at midday, heading for Myin Mu. We spend the afternoon on board the Irrawaddy Explorer where you can relax on the sun deck or in your spacious cabin and enjoy the legendary views of the passing river landscapes.

69

Visit the Tan Kyi Mountain, home to one of the four stupas marking the original corners of the town. Here you can enjoy a magnificent sunset above the Bagan plains.

Tan Kyi

DAY 8 Myin Mu

The penultimate day of your Far Eastern adventure offers a full-day trip to Monywa, starting from the town of Myin Mu 35 km to the west of Mandalay. From here we continue to Monywa where you can visit the Hpowindaung and Shwebadaung caves with their hundreds of Buddha statues and impressive mural paintings. After lunch (included in the trip), we continue to the Sambuddha Kat Kyaw pagoda which houses over half a million images of Buddha. Late in the afternoon we travel on to the boarding point in Monywa where your vessel is ready and waiting to take you on your way north after embarkation.

Incomplete Pagoda in Mingun

Sagaing

DAY 9 Mingun / Mandalay

This morning the Irrawaddy Explorer reaches the small village of Mingun, home to the famous incomplete pagoda, which can be visited during the tour, as well as the world’s largest functioning bell. After this excursion the vessel departs from Mingun, reaching Mandalay, the last stage of this trip, after lunch. The afternoon program features an excursion to the former capital of Ava in the Mandalay kingdom. Here you can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride to the 200 year old teak abbey of Bagaya-Kyaung before paying a visit to the historic town of Amarapura and the world-famous U Bein bridge which holds the world record for being the world’s longest wooden bridge at 1200 m. During the last evening of your cruise an entertaining dance and theatre performance will take place after dinner.

DAY 10 Mandalay

Finally, on the last day of your trip, it’s time to say goodbye to the crew on board who‘ll be happy to help you disembark. Those wishing to continue their travels after this 10 day trip can extend the holiday by a few days and undertake our land-based program at the Inle Lake, Myanmar’s highest altitude lake.

The village of Mingun to the north of Mandalay offers numerous sights including the ruins of the incomplete Mantara Gyi pagoda, a Buddhist shrine on the Irrawaddy. It was intended to be the largest pagoda in the world at 152 m. In 1790, thousands of workers began work on the building which was never completed and was finally abandoned with the death of the king in 1819. 70

He/She will be happy to provide any additional information you require. CRUISE ITINERARIES: Before your arrival you will have been advised of the planned itinerary. Details are subject to change.
