DISTRICT CONVENTION 2013 RECAP
DISTRICT EXECUTIVE BOARD & LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
“Once Upon a Time”….well more like only two weeks ago, we went to District Convention! Here’s a little about the experience!
Who was elected District Officer at DCON? Find out! Also, want to develop yourself into a better club leader, or leader in general, then join Leadership Academy!
LTG’s Note I’m simple. I’m passionate. I’m honored to be your Lieutenant Governor. Salutations Empire Division, For those of you that do not already know me, my name is Luis Tenorio and I will be serving as your 2013-2014 Lieutenant Governor. I strongly feel that in order to work well together, it is important that you get to know a bit more about me, so here are a few things about myself: I have been a part of the Kiwanis Family going on six year now. I am currently a first year at St. John’s University. I was born and raised in Southern California. Guilty pleasure– taking selfies. I love miniature ANYTHING. Now that you’ve had the chance to know a bit more about me, I’d like to direct attention back to Circle K. This first newsletter will serve as a great resource for you to know what is going on within the Division, as well as the District and even International levels of Circle K. Peruse its contents carefully and use them to your advantage! If you have any questions or comments concerning any information that is contained within this newsletter feel free to contact me at luis.tenorio@nycki.org. On that note, I want you all to know that as Lieutenant Governor, I am here to serve you– the membership. Feel free to ask me questions or come to me with comments and concerns. Now, with all that being said, let’s make this year the best one the empire division has ever seen! I have no doubt in my mind, that with your help and dedication, coupled with my unceasing efforts, this division will only continue to grow in strength, leadership, service, and fellowship. Yours in Service, Luis Tenorio

GETTING...
Growing up, I always loved Pixar movies, even to this day I enjoy the laughs, the dynamic and relatable characters, and even the tears that come with such films. It is for this very reason, that I have chosen “Getting ANIMATED,” as this year’s theme. I want us to be able to look back at this year with nothing but the fondest memories. Moreover, I want this Division to get ANIMATED about service– serving more hours that it ever has before. I want to see clubs fully embrace our District Governor’s project- “care to be aware”- and serve as everyday heroes to our campuses, as well as the our local communities, while still supporting our initiatives such as the ELIMINATE Project, March of Dimes, and so on. I want to see us get ANIMATED about fellowship– increasing in membership growth and retention, continually welcoming more and more people into this great organization that has truly shaped us into better individuals. I want to see us get ANIMATED about Circle K in general! As such, you can expect Pixar characters and films to pop-up frequently throughout the year in newsletters and other publications to help propel this theme. Now… LET’S GET ANIMATED!

MARCH OF DIMES & A MARCH FOR BABIES SUNDAY APRIL 28TH LINCOLN CENTER AREA, 65TH AND BROADWAY
Above are some of the milestones in research and development that the March of Dimes has reached within the past decades.
7
The March for Babies is an annual event hosted by the March of Dimes– one of the service partners of the Kiwanis Family. The March of Dimes focuses its efforts towards raising awareness, funds, and research for the premature birth of children. This year, unfortunately, this event falls on the same date as our District Large Scale Service Project, thus it cannot be a Division Service Event. HOWEVER, since not everyone is able to attend DLSSP, I highly encourage you to consider this as an alternative for you and your club, if there is anyone that is unable to attend DLSSP. Moreover, as this is the time of year in which we begin to plan events and fundraisers that we would like to carry out throughout the next academic year, I strongly urge you to include March of Dimes in your plans. In the pledge we often recite, we promise to, “dedicate [ourselves] to the development of mankind’s potential,” and what better way to do so than help develop the research and technology to let these children live happy, healthy lives and grow to be the leaders and great citizens of tomorrow.
SPRING DISTRICT LARGE SCALE SERVICE PROJECT A message from our District Board, Did you have fun at DCON? Want to continue that fun and pad your service hours? Looking forward to hanging out with all of your CKI friends?! Join us for our Spring District Large-Scale Service Project! We need to get a rough estimate of attendees before we give out any information on housing or service projects, but here's what we do know so far: 1. It's going to be in the Hudson Valley 2. It's going to be the last weekend in April (April 26-28). 3. It'll be cheap. So, so cheap compared to DCON. 4. There's going to be a lot of service! 5. That Sunday is the Habitat for Humanity Walk, and you're invited! You don't even need to raise money for it: Just come and show your support! 6. CKI is awesome, and DLSSP is awesome, and you're awesome. Is there really any other reason?
FRIDAY APRIL 26TH THROUGH SUNDAY APRIL 28TH
HELD IN THE HUSDON VALLEY AREA
If you are interested in going to Spring DLSSP, and you have not already clicked “attending on the Facebook Event or have not already expressed interest, please talk to your Club President or email me at luis.tenorio@nycki.org Knowing who is planning on attending is crucial so that we may set-up a service project and secure housing to accommodate our numbers. If you are still unsure of whether you are able to attend, but are considering, please also inform either your Club President or myself, so that we may take you into consideration for our estimate of how many are to attend. I look forward to seeing as many of you, serve hand-in-hand with the rest of our District in the Hudson Valley!

DISTRICT CONVENTION 2013 RECAP “Once Upon a DCON.” The theme for this year’s New York District Convention surely lived up to its name, as it was an unforgettable and magical experience. From participating in a Service Fair where we each had the opportunity to lend our service to various projects that would impact the community– such as making no-sew blankets for people in shelters, to hearing the passionate speeches of candidates running for District Office; and who could forget the overwhelming joy felt when our division’s very own – Kelly Chan– was announced as the District Governor-Elect for the New York District of Circle K International. For those of you that were able to attend, I hope that your experience was just as magical. For those of you that were unable to join us this convention, your absence was greatly felt. However, I strongly encourage you to prepare for this service year’s convention! For those of you that don’t want the magic of District Convention to end….guess what: it doesn’t have to! There are various opportunities to get together with members from all over the New York District such as Spring DLSSP, International Convention, and Sub-F fest! Many of these even allowing the opportunity to get to know members outside the New York District! And finally, the true magic of, not only conventions such as this, but of our organization in general is the magic of service. This is something that really never dies– go to your clubs, serve your community, be an everyday hero, and truly dedicate yourself to the “development of mankind’s potential,” because that is not only what this organization is founded upon, but also that true magic that keeps each and every one of us coming back for more.
“CARE TO BE AWARE” I challenge each of you to begin my Governor’s Project, Care to be Aware, challenge. If you have not heard of my Governors Project just yet, take the time to read the words "care to be aware." I challenge each of you to care to be aware of what is occurring on campus, communities and anywhere you may find yourself. How can you serve as an "everyday hero?" Did you give that extra dollar the kid at the store needed? You made a difference in that kids life, log it. I challenge you to log a minimum of one activity per week. By the end of the year, you should have 52 or more acts of kindness logged. More on the “Care to be Aware” project will come as the year progresses. - Kelly Chan, New York District Governor
