WELCOME To Pixel Magazine
Welcome to issue 993. We had great fun this month. We got to put a Sony TOUGH card through its paces in some crazy conditions in our most extreme test to date. We also found time to catch up with Mike Owen from Lumix
to talk all things Mirrorless. We love speaking to the people inside your important companies. Vitec are back once again with more releases within their various brands, showing why they continue to dominate in the accessory sector. As we write this, an email has just come through about Photokina 2019 being cancelled. This will certainly change the landscape for the year to come....

ANNOUNCING MITAKON SPEEDMASTER 65MM F/1.4 FOR FUJIFILM GFX Arguably the weakest spot in the current Fujifilm GFX system are the lack of real fast primes.ZY Optics have taken it upon themselves to fullfil one of those gaps with the 65mm f/1.4. The manual-

ZEISS:
STEALING THE SHOW WITH THE ZX1 MIRRORLESS CAMERA
1.300
ZEISS took the global press by surprise with the announcment of the ZX1 camera at Photokina 2018. This will be the iconic brands first camera in over 13 years. In a soon to be, saturated mirrorless market, ZEISS are sure to stand out with this release. Luke Woodford tells us his thoughts...
T
he ZX1 was presented at an exclusive press conference in Cologne. Thanks to the ZEISS lens and a sensor developed in-house at ZEISS, the camera delivers firstclass image quality combined with an operational concept and user experience that make the photographer’s jobs-tobe-done as intuitive as on a smartphone. The ZEISS camera concept is just the first step to opening up a new world of possibilities for ambitious photographers – from taking the shot to editing the image and sharing it on the web. The 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is Sigma’s first lens developed originally to live up to the sought-after angle of view and performance standard for a benchmark cine lens. This lens effectively arranges three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements to correct axial chromatic aberration and magnification chromatic aberration.
EDIT: The ZEISS ZX1 enables photographers to professionally process RAW images directly on the camera thanks to fully integrated Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC. Moreover, the ZEISS ZX1’s unique user interface supports the user’s particular workflow without any interruption – providing direct access to the most frequently used functions via a 4.3” multi-touch display.
“We know that we exploring new ways and initially addressing a special target group with the ZEISS ZX1. With our concept we are focusing on ambitious, professional creatives who want to produce their photographic experiences quickly and efficiently, and inspire as many people on the Internet as possible. This requires a streamlined workflow in addition to high-end features. This is exactly what the concept of the ZEISS ZX1 offers,” - Jörg Schmitz, Head of the Consumer Products business group at ZEISS.
quality and durability tests
SHOOT: the ZEISS ZX1 features a newly designed, integrated ZEISS Distagon 35 mm f/2 T* lens with autofocus that has been perfectly matched to the 37.4 megapixel full-frame sensor developed in-house at ZEISS. The interplay between the lens and sensor ensures first-class picture quality with that typical ZEISS look.
SHARE: when the networked fullframe camera is connected, the user can upload selected images directly to the internet – without the intermediate transfer to memory cards or other external devices. 512 GB of internal memory provide sufficient space for approximately 6,800 RAW files (DNG) or over 50,000 JPGs – more than enough to handle photos, even during a longer trip, and giving the photographer the chance to let their creativity flow. Versatile connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C ensure that various peripherals can be connected. Over-the-air software updates keep the camera up to date without requiring a computer connection.
To guarantee you can keep taking great photos for many years to come.
The ZX1 is one of the least leaked releases in history. ZEISS did an incredible job of keeping this under wraps. What we love most about the ZX1 so far, is that it’s very different from the other mirrorless announcements we have seen in recent months. The 512gb hard drive is a gigantic plus, eliminating the need to have to think about memory cards is absolutely fantastic. Also, having Lightroom built in on a 4.3” multitouch is pretty incredible. We are so happy to see such innovation from ZEISS and look forward to testing the finished product when it’s released in 2019.

Q&A
LUMIX:
Q&A WITH MIKE OWEN
This month, we caught up with Mike Owen, Professional Imaging Marketing Manager at Lumix for a Q&A on all things Mirrorless.
make up the majority of the market Now, we have the opportunity to deploy our innovation into a Full Frame body with the ambition to become a significant player within the Full Frame mirrorless business over the next few years. With this dual approach, customers will be able to choose the right tool to fit their creative requirements. Do you think we could see Panasonic partner with more brands in the near future?
How did the three-way partnership with Leica and Sigma come to fruition? Leica and Panasonic have a long and successful history of working together, so when we decided that we wanted to pursue the business direction of creating a Full Frame model, a collaboration with Leica seemed an obvious choice with its existing Full Frame capabilities. Sigma and Panasonic have also had a long and fruitful working relationship thanks to the Micro Four Thirds mount, so bringing together all this knowledge and experience in a three-way alliance was a natural progression. How much do you feel it will strengthen your place in the mirrorless market? Ten years ago, Panasonic LUMIX pioneered the mirrorless market when we launched the world’s first mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera and we have been heavily involved in innovating in this market since. Mirrorless cameras are now fast becoming the industry standard and I don’t think it will be long before they
We have a long history of working with other brands and our objective is to continue building relationships with companies within the photographic eco-system to provide the best possible products for our customers. The camera is only a small part of the photographer’s toolkit and as a manufacturer we must be willing to embrace that and ensure we are part of wider photographic conversations in order for professionals to consider us in the same breath as other brands in the industry. Why did you choose this Photokina to make your full frame mirrorless statement? Photokina is the largest photographic show in Europe, if not the world, and it brings together virtually the entire global industry and media in one place. The show this year was the ideal platform to present not only a new product to the industry, but also a new concept of how we want to work with our photographers as we move forward. Our press conference was well over-subscribed and reached many more watching on live-streams and through resulting media coverage. The initial feedback has been incredibly positive and we are very much looking forward to the future. With all the big brands now showing their hand with full frame mirrorless cameras, how do you think your S series will stand out?
Our S Series cameras are very much targeted at the professional and while product specifications are obviously important, the ergonomics and usability of a camera are equally central. These features have been a massive focus for the development of the S1 and S1R – the aim from the outset was to create a tool that a photographer will be comfortable working with all day long. The S Series cameras have been designed to be durable and reliable in the harshest conditions, so a photographer can work with confidence that their camera can withstand the day to day grind of working in the field, as well as ensuring a perfect balance between camera and lens. We have built a camera that has many of the cutting-edge technologies that professionals have become accustomed to through the LUMIX series. In short, we have built a Full Frame camera without compromise and the quality will speak for itself. Do you feel a rush to get the S series to the market or are you content with early 2019? No, we do not feel in a rush at all. We are still working to our original schedule for development announcement, embargo and sales start. We have a unique product in the market at this time, proven by the specifications we have announced and the positive feedback we have received. We are excited for early next year when we can share LUMIX S Series with professional photographers and videographers worldwide and the team and I can’t wait for the incredible images that we will see as a result.

TESTED NEWS
SONY:
WE SEE HOW TOUGH THE ‘TOUGH’ CARD REALLY IS!
This is probably the Tested feature we’ve been excited about the most in our history with Pixel. The Tough memory card is a product that claims so much and we certainly had lots of fun putting it through its paces. it into the camera. Everything was there! We then left it a few hours and checked again, everything was still there. We also took some more photos and it read them perfectly. The first test was passed with flying colours!
Ice Test So now we’re on to test number two. For this we got a large bowl of crushed ice and we put our Tough card right in the middle of it. We made this test two hours. To keep the ice from melting too much, we switched the bowl between the freezer and the fridge. After the six hours were up, we did the same tests as before and it again, passed all of them with flying colours.
I
n our 10 year photography career, we have experienced two memory card failures. We class that as a lot. A memory card failure, if you’re only shooting with one card slot, can potentially have a really negative impact on your career, and yourself. That’s why, we would never shoot with a camera without two memory card slots and are always on the lookout for the most reliable memory cards on the market. As you can imagine, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on Sony’s TOUGH SD card. For this Tested feature we wanted to get our Contributor Scott Reeves involved as he is someone who often shoots in extreme conditions. Whether it be trekking through forests or out in icy conditions. We went out together and Scott took all the images for this feature. Sony state that the TOUGH SD card can withstand far more crazy conditions than we’ve tested. What we wanted to do, was try and mimic some real situations that many photographers may find themselves in at some point during their lives. We have based the three tests we have done on photographers dropping their cards in certain scenarios and not noticing them for a period of time. The time tested depends
8 www.pixel.co.uk
on the given situation. Before we began any testing, we took 300 photos using a Sony a7riii so we could not only see if it still stored new photos taken on the TOUGH SD card, but also to see if we could read the existing ones. Lets get into it...
Water Test For our first test, we wanted to mimic hard rain. We laid the card on a slightly slanted surface so the water could really get around the card. We then turned a kitchen tap on to a level that represented hard rainfall. We chose a time of 15 minutes for this test. As the water beat down on the card, we waited patiently but anxiously, trying hard to remember that our precious work isn’t actually on there and that this is just a test! The water covered every part of the card in the first few seconds. For the rest of the time it was just completely soaked. After the fifteen minutes were up, we dried the card with a towel and put
NEWS TESTED eagerly put it into our Sony a7riii and low and behold, all of the images were still on the card and readable. We then took 200 photos, the card worked perfectly and the read time was still incredible. Then we imported the images onto our Macbook Pro, which again worked perfectly. We then used the TOUGH card over a period of one week to make sure that no slow damage had been caused.
Conclusion
Earth Test So for our third and final test we wanted to switch it up. We decided to go to our local woods and we placed the card just to the edge of a popular path. We left the card for 24 hours. From midday to midday. We wanted to put it in a situation where literally anything could happen to it.
That night it rained for three hours. At its coldest, the temperature was 2* and at its highest 16 so the card experienced very different conditions. When we went to pick it up the following day, we examined the card closely. It smelt a little strange. We could only imagine what animal decided to use it as a toilet in the night... When we got back home, we cleaned it up and let it dry for 10 minutes. We then
We don’t have any negatives for this test. The TOUGH card excelled in everything we threw at it. The write speed is incredibly fast and it just exceeded our expectations of being Tough. There is no plausable real life situation where we can see this card failing. The Tough card is suitable for every photograper but will particularly appeal to the carerful and safety concious among us.

a simple tap on the screen and pictures can be taken without having to touch any other controls. Inherent with all Leica cameras, the DC Vario-Summilux zoom lens of the D-Lux 7 is perfectly matched to the camera’s new sensor to deliver optimum picture quality. The fast aperture and the range of focal length make the camera particularly versatile in every situation – from portraits and landscapes to architecture, macro closeups and street photography. With its 17-megapixel resolution and a maximum ISO sensitivity of 25600, the four-thirds sensor of the Leica D-Lux 7 is also ideal for capturing the highest-quality images in low ambient light, with natural colours and fine rendition of details. The camera’s hardware has been improved and includes various additions to its range of functions. For example, the focus point of exposure can be changed after shooting, or several exposures with different focus points can be superimposed on each other and merged with the aid of Focus Stacking, for instance to create a greater depth of
focus in macro exposures. The camera’s capabilities have also been expanded to include video recording in 4K resolution – at a frame rate of up to 30 frames per second and 100 Mbit and in MP4 and AVCHD-format. The Leica D-Lux 7 is the first camera in the D-Lux line that can be used together with the Leica FOTOS App which enables remote control of the camera from a smartphone and fast and easy wireless transfer of pictures from iOS or Android devices. Photographers can use numerous options for sharing their pictures directly on social media after editing and carrying out all the essential post-production work in app. The classic look of the Leica D-Lux 7, is complemented with a range of equally stylish and practical accessories such as high-quality cases, carrying straps and a practical handgrip.
