TESTED:
THE NEW KiiPix PRINTER BY TOMY
We recently had the pleasure of testing the KiiPix from Tomy which Swains are now distributing throughout the UK. The new KiiPix printer allows these smartphone users to produce an instant photograph on Fujifilm Instax film from their phone in seconds.
T
his was something really different for us to test and we really enjoyed it. We use an Instax camera regularly to document our personal life. We also take lots of photos on our phones (of course) so this KiiPix printer is a natural fit for us. Our initial impression when laying our eyes on it for the first time is that it’s a cute product that will appeal highly to the millennial generation. The KiiPix is branded as a printer but in essence it’s actually a camera that takes a photo of your phone screen and prints whatever is on the screen onto Instax film. The KiiPix printer is ultra portable which is a great selling point, but what we really like is the fact that you can just take your phone out with you, which you would have with you anyway, and still get the memories you created that day on Instax film when you get home. This means that you don’t have to take any extra camera related gear out with you. Just having your phone means you don’t have something extra to worry about losing and even though it’s portable and very light, it still needs a bag so not having to take it with you is fantastic. Having a printer like this also means you will save lots of money by using less Instax film. You can take unlimited amount of
4 www.pixel.co.uk
images on your phone and simply pick the best ones to actually print. For a lot of us, using an Instax camera is great fun but you can’t always be sure that the same composition you see through the camera, is the same on you see on the film. The Kiipix eliminates that problem. As long as you are careful when lining your phone up, the KiiPix should print your image with the same framing it has on your phone. Another thing that really impressed us about the KiiPix printer was the image quality of the prints. Baring in mind the low price point and that it has a built in camera, the images are as good as they are straight from an Instax camera. The tones and contrast are absolutely superb. The set up only takes a few seconds and of course it doesn’t need batteries so that’s another thing you don’t have to think about. Overall we think this is a great product that fits really well in this thriving sector of our industry. It does exactly what it sets out to do. If we had to pick one thing that we wished could be better, it would be the build quality but at this price point it would be probably be asking too much!

“We are delighted to have been appointed the UK channel distributor for KiiPix. I don’t believe there is anything else currently in the market that offers you an opportunity to attract so many NEW customers, all of which hopefully will continue to return to your store.” - Danny Williams Managing Director at Swains

Swains Official Statement Many teenagers have never experienced Instant photography before. With Fujifilm’s Instax and new Polaroid cameras in the market it’s already one of the fasting growing areas of the UK photo industry. There are currently over 30 million people in the UK with billions of images stored on their smartphones. The new KiiPix printer allows these smartphone users to produce an instant photograph on Fujifilm Instax film from their phone in seconds. There are no wires or batteries so it’s simple to use and totally portable to take anywhere. With a guide price of only £39.99 (not including an Instax film) it’s a WINNER! KiiPix, manufactured by TOMY, is available in three colours and uses the standard Fujifilm Instax mini film, so there is every reason why a new customer would continue to return to your store. TOMY UK are heavily supporting the launch of Kiipix, following the success of its launch in Japan last year. They are running a massive integrated marketing campaign, their biggest ever, on TV and Cinema as well as digital, with YouTube, social media and influencers being a key priority given the target audience for this product. Look out for the ad appearing in Love Island as well as MTV and other relevant programming We are already being approached by many non-traditional photo retailers, who see just how successful this product will be in the market and looking to increase their customer footfall, so please don’t let this opportunity, pass you by and make sure you have placed your order with Swains!

INTERVIEW
SIGMA: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KAZUTO YAMAKI
This month, we had the pleasure of talking to Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma Corporation. We appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to give Pixel an insight to the Sigma brand in 2018.
Pixel: Your Art lenses are extremely popular and are cosmetically beautiful. What inspired Sigma to create this product line? Kazuto Yamaki: Several things inspired me. First of all, we wanted to develop lenses that were usable with the highest image quality cameras. In 2011~2012 timeframe, DSLR`s were increasing the number of pixels to achieve better image quality and we realized that some old lenses (not only from Sigma, but also from other manufacturers) were not usable due to their low optical quality. We aimed to make the lenses that can support even higher resolution cameras. We believe that our Art lenses are futureproof and will perform well even with future cameras. We think this is of great value to our customers. Second, we wanted to make the best quality lenses in terms of the image quality and cosmetics for our own satisfaction. As a manufacturer, we always wish to make products that we can be proud of. It gives us pleasure as a manufacturer. We believe that our Art series lenses are real artistic works. Third, we needed to change our main business segment from the entryclass affordable lenses to the highest quality lenses for the professionals and advanced amateur. As you know, we have only one factory which is situated
12 www.pixel.co.uk
in Japan. In order to maintain the factory operation in Japan, it was obvious that we could not survive with just the entry-level products because labour costs are high in Japan. In order to protect our employees in the factory, we really needed to have a high-end product line and Art is the solution for that.
KY: Yes, of course. However, unfortunately I can’t share that information with you at this moment. Please look out for announcements from Sigma in the near future.
PL: Thank you for that insight. What have been your most selling lenses in the last year and are there any that have surprised you?
KY: We will continuously pursue the same direction and goal. We will make even better quality products and intend to introduce even more innovative products that don’t yet exist in the industry today.
KY: Art prime lenses, such as 35mm F1.4, 50mm F1,4 and 85mm F1.4. When it comes to the new products launched in 2017, 14mm F1.8 was successful, too. PL: As Sony/Fujifilm grows in popularity amongst consumers, will you focus more and more on these brands? KY: Yes, we particularly focus on lenses for Sony. We still don’t have a plan to make the lenses for Fujifilm, yet. PL: What do you feel is the most attractive thing about Sigma lenses in 2018? KY: The new range of Art prime lenses for Sony E mount. PL: You have a range of cameras. How important is that to you? It feels like the focus is far more on your lenses, which is understandable as that is what consumers know you for. KY: Our camera range is very important for us. We put our efforts equally into both cameras and lenses although we launch less products in the camera segment. Making high quality cameras teaches us a lot and contributes significantly to improving the quality of our lenses too. PL: Have you got an plans for Photokina this year that you can give us a hint about?
PL: It was worth a try! What is Sigma’s main aim moving into the future?

USING THE AI IN ITS P20 PRO TO IDENTIFY NEW GENERATION OF CREATIVE TALENT ‘The world’s first photography competition judged by AI and a Leica photographer’ Huawei are really at the forfront of engagement and inovations in our industry. We are always eager to see what they hit us with next.
H
uawei, the global technology leader, today announces a photography competition to spark a renaissance in photography and discover the next stars of Western Europe’s photography scene, as rated by the HUAWEI P20 Pro’s AI and Alex Lambrechts, a top Leica photographer. The campaign is the latest activity for the HUAWEI P20 Series launch campaign and brings to life Huawei’s leadership in AI photography. “We have trained the AI in our P20 Pro smartphone to understand what makes an amazing photo” explains Andrew Garrihy, CMO Huawei Western Europe. ‘This innovation is helping us to identify emerging creative talent across Europe and showcase their photography potential to others. ” Budding photographers will be encouraged to submit their photography by some of Europe’s most influential opinion leaders, chosen for their passion for photography, art and design. Photos can be uploaded via an interactive Chatbot on FB Messenger and will be
reviewed and rated using the AI algorithm on the HUAWEI P20 Pro. Trained using 4,000,000 images taken by professional photographers and picture editors the AI will then give each photo a personalised AI score based on parameters such as focus, jitter, deflection, colour and composition. The competition, which is open to the public, launches on 12th July and runs for 8 weeks and will feature five different themes over the course of the competition, including ’A New Renaissance’, ‘After Dark’ and ‘Deep in Detail’. A prize will be awarded for the best photograph within each theme, giving entrants five chances to win a HUAWEI P20 Pro[1]. The top overall winners (10 in total) will ultimately be selected to win a trip to Italian art capital Florence, home of the Renaissance, to attend a Leica photography masterclass. The photos captured in Florence will then be judged by Huawei’s AI and a top Leica photographer, and for one lucky winner, there’s the ultimate prize of being whisked away for a grand tour across three of Europe’s most picturesque countries.
The best photos from the competition will be sold to raise money for a local charity. Huawei worked with FCB Inferno to develop this Western Europe campaign. MANFROTTO PRO LIGHT FASTTRACK-8 SLING BAG
Pixel’s Antony Meadley tells us in his words about his recent photo trip to Burma with one of Manfrotto’s latest bag releases.
I
had a month long trip planned to Burma (Myanmar) and needed a compact sling bag to carry my camera gear and valuables, whilst the rest of my belongings were in a large rucksack. It didn’t make any sense to carry two backpacks with the extreme heat and extensive travelling I knew was ahead of me, so an over the shoulder sling bag seemed like the best design. I saw that Manfrotto had just released the Pro Light Fasttrack-8 Sling Bag. It seemed to be the best match for my requirements, especially with its builtin camera strap which I thought would come in really handy in situations where I needed to shoot quickly and efficiently. When the bag arrived, it looked as impressive in real life as it did in photos.

It’s marketed as a bag for CSC Mirrorless cameras. In my mind, it would make sense to make it slightly bigger so it comfortably fits DSLRs so more people could use it but I also understand the power of marketing it to the popular mirrorless demographic. As I’m sure you have all seen, the bag is very stylish and made of robust ripstop nylon fabric which is tough whilst also being lightweight. The bag only weighs 730g. The toughness and weight of the Pro Light Fasttrack I thought would be key factors in this trip, and they certainly were! There are plenty of zipped pouches for storing things. I had my passport, credit cards, Kindle, sun cream, memory cards, spare batteries, USB battery pack
all securely stored. And there are also two side pouches for holding small water bottles, essential when walking in the heat. On the long plane journey, it was easy to slip the bag under the seat in front, and then access it whenever I needed to get to my passport or Kindle or headphones and even neck pillow, instead of having to use the overhead locker and disturbing people. The padding is very reassuring. One of my main destinations was Bagan. I was often climbing up the steep sides of the pagodas in order to get a good viewpoint for the famous sunsets and sunrises over the hundreds of abandoned temples. In Yangon I climbed up to the top of a rollercoaster that was completely lost in time, needing both hands free to hold onto whatever I could find for stability. In
