Our lives have evolved rapidly in the last year and life is taking us in a multitude of directions in both our personal and professional lives. GITZO:

SHOOTING WITH THE CENTURY NECK CAMERA STRAP

This month, Luke & Mandy went out and about in the South of France to test one of Gitzo’s new camera straps. All images shared on these pages are taken whilst Luke or Mandy were wearing the Century Neck Strap. Luke Woodford shares their thoughts...

I

was really excited to test one of the new Gitzo straps. As with all Gitzo products, they look the part and you can expect them to be made to an extremely high standard (this is made in Italy). It’s certainly both of those things! I love the aesthetic of this product. It’s instantly recognisable as a Gitzo product and looks very stylish. I tested the Century Neck strap over a week period. I went out shooting for a total of 35 hours in this time. With a product like this, first impressions are

6 www.pixel.co.uk

important but the key is how you feel about it over a period of time. It securely holds most full-frame cameras, rangefinders, and premium CSC cameras. We did our test with a Sony a7riii and G Master 2470 f2.8 as it’s a camera we regularly use. We notoriously shoot a lot, especially at the moment with everything we are working on over in France. We are either holding or having a camera round our necks. We are often in some sort of pain so it would be interesting to see if the Century Neck Strap improved this!

TESTED

Gitzo is a premium brand so people will know that the camera attached is likely to be expensive, but realistically, being such a specialised brand, it’s not so recognisable to the average thief. At the end of our week of testing, after Mandy had also used the strap for some street sessions, we sat down and had a chat about our thoughts on the product. We both felt that when you initially put the Century Neck Strap around your neck it feels very comfortable but a little strange because it’s completely different from standard straps. Once you get used to it, you wouldn’t be

“Once you get used to it, you wouldn’t be without it. The build quality is as premium as it gets. If you’re a pro photographer or an enthusiast who takes photos a lot, this product is a very worth investment.”

Photo of Mandy by Luke, in L’Hôtel Particulier Guilhon, Lectoure, featuring Minuit

The Century Neck Strap has two ways to attach to your camera. Either the ring-type camera attachment system or a universal 10 mm wide band attachment for standard camera loops. It doesn’t make a difference to the strap when in use but it’s always nice to have options, especially if you have a preference. Putting it on for the first time, it felt quite stiff. This is because we have been using our native camera strap for a long time. You can’t wrap it round your hands like you can with native straps and it doesn’t bend fully round your neck, but why should it? It’s not designed to be the same, it’s designed to be different. If it’s the same, what’s the point? It just takes a bit of getting used to. There is a suede-like texture on the inside of the strap which is really soft. We definitely noticed the difference to standard camera straps which tend to be scratchy and uncomfortable after a long shoot. One thing that isn’t often talked about is switching camera straps to lower the risk of theft. By this we mean not advertising what camera you have with your native strap. If you’ve been paying attention over the last year, you will know we were victims of a very large camera theft in Italy. Since then, we try to be as careful as possible. It just makes sense not to advertise what camera you own when in a potentially risky place or situation. You could argue that without it. The build quality is as premium as it gets. If you’re a pro photographer or an enthusiast who takes photos a lot, this product is a very worthwhile investment.

SWAINS:

NEWS Q&A

CATCHING UP WITH DANNY WILLIAMS Earlier in the year, we visited Danny Williams, Managing Director at Swains shiny new HQ. We thought it was only fitting that we caught up with him again at the beginning of this year to see whats been going on in Swains world. PL: What products particularly stood out for you in 2018?

Pixel: How would you describe ‘2018 for Swains’? Danny Williams: Its proved to be a tough year once more, not helped by the unknown around what will happen regarding Brexit. However we as a company are still focused on promoting output in conjunction with Fujifilm and Katie, who looks after our gifting and frame business, is always looking for new ideas to help lab owners encourage consumers to do more with their captured images. Katie said “Working closely with Fujifilm on new output ideas linked to the Imagine software has certainly helped grow our sales throughout 2018 within the Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service stores”. We are also planning to launch some exciting new lines and with the return of Lexar, we are all confident that we can make 2019 a successful year. PL: What products sold best for you last year? DW: Polaroid instant cameras were very popular in the lead up to Christmas, due to the cameras being supplied in a Gift Kit, containing a film and photo print box. Classic design and contemporary style combined with modern features makes the Polaroid cameras a popular choice. 35mm film sales just keep on growing at an alarming rate, the only problem seems to be keeping up with demand.

DW: KiiPix was a great product for us this year. This was a new line for us but we saw the potential and knew it would be a success, especially as KiiPix had commissioned a huge advertising campaign for cinema and TV as well as the eye-catching in-store POS and merchandisers. To support our retailers in offering consumers more bespoke personalised items, we introduced Novachrome DyeSublimation products. Ranging from mugs, cushions, photo slates and jigsaws to teddy bears and candles. The range is always evolving with new lines added monthly. Frames and Albums are always popular and we always aim to meet the ever changing trends and fashions. Producing a yearly printed catalogue allows us to showcase our extensive range plus having the Swains website allows us to launch any new or seasonal ranges within the year. PL: How are you finding your new HQ now you and the team have well and truly settled in?

retailers. The number of accounts placing orders this year has increased over 50%. To reward retailers placing online orders through the Swains website they will be automatically entered into our new monthly competition to win a free prize. iD Station has experienced consistent growth over the last couple of years and currently has over 200 users in the UK. ID users see a steady increase in digital passports and the latest introduction of online renewals for child passports will grow the numbers even further. The Government plans to receive 90% of passports renewals digitally by 2020, so ID station could become the best purchase retailers make this year. We will focus on helping them with this decision. PL: How do you see the mirrorless camera market evolving in 2019? DW: Further growth over 2018 is best guess. This is one sector of the camera market which is still growing and is taking further market share away from DSLR as technology improves and users are moving across to the smaller, more compact format.

DW: Everybody has settled into our new promises very well. The open plan office layout has been particularly beneficial as different departments are able to easily support each other as well as creating a more unified working environment. Because we were able to design the offices we were able to create a bespoke interior allowing us to have everything we wanted.

PL: What are your thoughts on Photokina cancelling the 2019 show?

PL: Do you think we might see more brands distributed through Swains in 2019?

PL: Any employees you would like to mention that particularly stood out for you last year within the Swains company?

DW: I do and we have some exciting new optical and storage lines planned for launch around The Photography Show. It’s planned that both new ranges will be featured separately having their own stands at TPS

After spending over 30 years in the photo industry, Malcolm Tullett has decided It’s time to relax and retire. We would like to thank Malcolm for all the service and support he has given Swains International plc. We all wish him well and hope he enjoys his well-earned rest.

PL: What’s Swains’ focus going into 2019? DW: The Swains website continues to be a huge focus for us. Since launching in November 2014 we have invested heavily making it a “One-Stop-Shop” for our

DW: It doesn’t surprise us being so close to the last one held in September 2018, money is quite tight and many manufacturers try and plan new launches around large exhibitions. So to try and plan new launches so close would always be a challenge.
