Matrix of functions This diagrams shows my methodology in he initial arrangement of the areas incorporated into my design. By determining which areas synergised with each other, I was able to create a bubble diagram which could be rearranged and reworked to create the initial form of my design.

The final form of this design is the result of following a set of principles that defined the style of Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza, and the analysis of Siza's buildings that preceded the design process. In this design, these rules have been used to create a structure that responds to the landscape it sits within without diminishing its purpose, and while also creating something that is recognisably comparable to a building by Alvaro Siza and also noticeably unique. The initial analysis was based on two buildings by Siza, the Duarte House and Banco Borges & Irmao. That findings of this analysis indicated a great number of elements which could be implemented in this design, but seemingly most important, was that it should generally be a simple form with a subtractive nature. Accordingly, the form was defined by organising spaces according to function and how those functions interacted with each other and applying subtractive principles to the general shape formed by this arrangement. Smaller details were also paid attention to, such as hiding doors via the use of small hallways, selective glass facades and by using a limited selection of materials. The materials seemed most appropriate were all of a very light palette, using limestone to cover the exterior of the building and making use of white marble for the internal areas of the cafe and restaurant and also using white marble panels on the lower parts of the walls in the same areas. The selective glass facade was used for a number of reasons aside form allowing light inside. It has been used essentially only for the guest areas and by doing so they direct the eyes of anyone looking through it down the river. The placement of the building was also influenced heavily by this view down the river, with the only constraint being the terrain becoming steeper as one approaches the bend in the river. Ultimately, this building has been designed with a lot of consideration towards the style of Alvaro Siza. While not adhering to his style exactly, this design is derived from the principles he follows in his own designs, resulting in a form that is visibly influenced by Siza.
