What is Happiness? Everone has their own definition of happiness with topics diversing from, having money, having a family and friends. After researching into peoples top things to be happy about, having food came top. With Achieving something and friends coming a joint second. Throughout the survey family and Tv and movies come aout, which is expected along with other hobbies like sport and music. The true happiness of some people is doing what they love. However, in my personal opinion I believe that happiness is a journey, no one can ever be happy all the time. I believe this because of the aspect of death of a friend or family member you can’t be happy about that, but you can enjoy your time together and remember memories. Happiness is temporary but not one thing can make someone happy.

Sefan Sagmeister - The Happy Show The Happy Show was created by Stefna Sagmmeister and his team in the summer of 2012. The show is all about interacting with people and measuring how happy they are. The show is interactive with a series of interventions around the show. The idea behind this concept was some previous work of Sagmeister’s called Design Happiness.. From there he was reminded of this work by after a friend critisised some of his work he was making for his studio. He then thought of this concept which has now become a final show. Sagmeister has also created a number of “happiness rules” for himsef to follow. Some of these rules included things like looking good limits life, money doesn’t make you happy, drugs are fun but then they become a drag and, there is no moral reason to have children. What is meant by this is that he doesn’t feel pressured into having children and that it is down to people’s choice if they want to have children or not.

The Guardian - Happy for Life App In 2014 the british news paper, The Guardian, created a happiness application for the public to be able to rate their happieness levels. Throughout the day the people would rate how happy there are by rating on a scale starting at “meh” and finishing at “max happy”. In a whole on average 44% of people said they were happy. However, the majority of users started the day sliding downwards rather than upwards. On average 56% of people were happy after they had completed an activity with 58% of those people completing a social activity. As what is expected the weekend was the happiest time for the majority and mondays being the worst. Blue monday where people go back to work after the christmas holidays was at 38% average. Whereas the run up to christmas saw a surge in people being happier. Overall between the start of December 2014 and February 2015, the app saw and increase in happiness from 39% to 47%.

Daniele Quercia Daniele Quercia is an Engineer who has spoken at a TED talk about Happy maps. This is his story of when he worked in Boston and he rode a bike to work everyday. After about a month he went a different way because he found a road where there was no cars on it. It was at this point where he realised that he had been using the route to work as the shortest route, and he didn’t think about enjoying the journey. From that he made happy maps about the shortest route, the happy route and a quitet route. He did this as a way of finding out which people enjoyed which route. This relates to my opinion of happiness as it is a journey where you should enjoy it while you can as who knows what curveball will be around the corner.

What is the Internet? The internet is a digital base for people go and found out about all kinds of things online. It is a place where people can play games, go shopping, advertise themselves or products. However, over the modern time social media has taken over as the main reason why people go on the internet. When the world wide web was first around no one knew what to do with it. Even with email the social aspect has been around from the start, but the way it has developed has been the reason for its popularity. Nowadays people rely on the internet everwhere they go. People are impatiet, they can’t wait until they’re at home to buy something online or to play a game or listen to music. The internet has made people impatient and wanting everything now.

What is the Future? The future is all about whats next? Nobody knows what will happen and how to react to it when things happen. Take the 1950s for example, people believed that the future would be all robots and floating cars. Now we view the future as more technological based, with the development of computers and phones, its all about making our lives easier. As well as making things alot easier, being environmentally friendly is also with the growing interest of electric vehicles and solar panels etc. Its not just about helping ourselves in the future but helping where we live and save the planet. The future is unexpected and people do things to make themselves happy and to help their lives easier.

Idea One - Pictograms

I have come up with this concept of creating pictograms around what make people happy. I took inspiration from Masaru Katsumie’s icon designs for the Tokyo 1964 olympics, and from that I came across the 1968 Mexico olympics branding. I will use this to create icons of different things that make people happy, but also add these in a 3x3 or 4x4 quare grid onto a poster that also includes a persons gender and age. For this I can then digitalise each poster and create a webpage for each icon that is used, which then links to websites that will be of great help. For example a cooking icon webpage would include information about what cooking is and also links to online recipie books and chiefs websites etc.

Idea One - Pictograms

Idea Two - Illustration

For this concept I will be creating a series of Illustrations showing how people rely on the things that make then happy more than they should. This would be including things like phones taking over and looking after a human or money taking over our lives etc. I will be using these illustrations as a campaign for happiness and being against technology taking over our lives. The aim of the campaign would be to get people off of their phones and laptops and do things that are more practical in life. For the campaign itself, I will produce posters for my physical work and a social media page for my digital work.

Idea Three - Branding

For my third concept I have thought about branding the internet. This is very vague to start with, but my idea is to create an identity for the internet. At the moment the internet is an arange of things which is made up of social media, shopping, business etc. I am going to create the brand as if it was a company with different departments, for example; social media is a department of the internet. Everything in the modern day that can make us happy is online, and most people nowadays use the internet of a daily sometime hourly basis. This concept is to get people looking at the internet as something different as to a place to go to make ourselves happy or a place to share our happiness around the world.

Idea Three - Social Media

For my final concept I am going to create my own social media channel or update an original channel such as myspace or Windows Messenger. This is beacuse social media is a big part of our lives now and the amount of people on social websites is growing and will continue to grow into the future. I am going to produce the wed design for the social media outlet and all of the branding for it as well for my physical and digital outcomes.

Idea One - Pictograms - Development

After Researching into the branding of the Mexcio olympics, I decieded to use pictograms to represent people’s happiness. I began doing this by setting up a survey and using the answers people gave me to create icons that represented things that make them happy. Some of the answeres I recieved included things like family, friends, food and a number of hobbies and activities. I began to use these icons and the style off letters to work within a grid and include gender and age. This was to see the various outcomes made by difefrent genders and age groups.

Poster Development - Branding

For my poster development I wanted to incorporate something that would relate to the logo in some way. This is why I started using the circles as objects in the poster designs like a newspaper or a games console etc. I also looked and the brand guidelines I created and worked along side that to make is work as part of the company brand. This is why I have gone for a simple design, to go with the brand principles of simple, engaging and intereactive. I created posters for each department and then one as a whole. I began with using figures but after that I elieve that the circle fingures are better because they are clearer and relate to the logo in a better way. I added the text of the name of a department but then changed that to make the poster more engaging and make them look at the image in a little more detail.

Advertisment Development - Branding

I started a storyboard for my animation, which is going to run with the theme of simplicity. The animation is an advertisment for the brand, so I feel it would be best to relate it to the posters as best as I can so there is a clear link between the media outcomes. I have worked with the same colour scheme I have included in the brand guidlines. The storyboard at this stage is a very rough idea of what will happen, but I know once I enter After Effects these outcoes may change, due to the effects and movements I will be able to complete in the programme.
