he Village of Rhinebeck is a gem tucked within one of the most scenic towns in the Hudson Valley, perhaps the richest agricultural and cultural section of New York State. Rhinebeck is special in the area for its winning combination of accessibility, economic vitality, and the relative quiet of country life.

Throughout the year, the village is a hub of activity for visitors and locals alike. Many are attracted by the careful blend of historic architecture and modern sensibility. Filled with eateries and shops, patrons can browse antiques, clothing, home décor, books, and more. There is no “busy” season. No matter the time of year, those in Rhinebeck enjoy a wide array of cuisine, much of it focused on local and seasonal foods. Some prefer the relaxed warmth of an upstate summer, with farms and markets and outdoor seating at many of the restaurants. Others prefer the crisp and picturesque fall or the charm of winter in a village where the trees shine with lights, decked for the holidays. Rhinebeck was largely agrarian until the midtwentieth century when it saw a steady growth in population. Today, the town has a strong history of open space conservation and features some of the finest pastoral landscapes in the state. The 6 |

village is recognized regionally for its careful zoning and planning, including an historic district overlay. Efforts at patterning modern architecture after historic examples can be seen in the post office, built around 1940, which was designed to mirror the distinctive Dutch building style of many of the town’s earliest buildings. Many large riverfront estates built nearby have been preserved by federal, state, and local land preservation laws, including a National Historic District along the Hudson. Recreation opportunities abound, with acres of open space and the nearby Hudson River, not to mention nearby mountains for hiking and skiing. Local trails through Ferncliff Forest, Southlands, Burger Hill and many other spots provide ample opportunities for exercise and enjoying nature. Rhinebeck Central School District consistently remains competitive in sports and academics.

The town is within easy reach of several private schools as well, and institutions such as Bard College, Vassar College, and the Culinary Institute of America. Rhinebeck feels remote from the hustle and bustle of city life, but it is easily accessible from every direction and using many modes of transportation. The Rhinecliff Amtrak stop delivers you to the town and is minutes from the village proper. From the west the town is an easy shot via Route 199 and the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, which connects to the New York State Thruway. The town is easily within reach of the Taconic Parkway as well. This isn’t the place that time forgot—it’s the place where time is actively remembered, preserved, and celebrated, both with an eye to what is most exciting and interesting today and what is worth protecting from yesterday.

RHINEBECK HISTORY Maureen Gates/Sharpimagesphotographic.com

R

hinebeck’s location along the first major thoroughfare in America, the mighty Hudson River gave has given the town a front seat to much of the country’s early history. The area was settled in 1686 by the Dutch, who received a royal land grant from the English crown. In the early 1700s, Palatine settlers of German descent gave the area the name “Rynbeck.” Easy accessibility, first by the Hudson River, which serves as the town’s western border, and later by proximity to rail lines, allowed Rhinebeck to maintain an important place in regional commerce.

Today, the Museum of Rhinebeck History provides an overview of the town’s history and many historical artifacts to peruse. The Quitman House (7015 Route 9; (845-871-1798), a parsonage erected by the Palatines in the late 1700s, houses both the museum and the Quitman Resource Center for Preservation dedicated to the preservation of the house and a neighboring historic farmstead. The historic “Old Stone Church” the parsonage was built to serve still stands next door and the entire complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Palatine Farmstead nearby on Route 9 was built around 1770 and by some miracle kept intact over the years. It is one of the oldest buildings in the town and continues to be actively 8 |

preserved by the Quitman Center. If research is the goal, the best place to start is the Starr Library history room (68 West Market Street; (845) 876-4030), which features an impressive collection of local records (cemetery plots, churches, wills, marriages), the archives of the Rhinebeck Gazette, which ran from 1842 to 1990; rare documents and hundreds of local historical accounts. The library itself was founded in 1862 and is the oldest in the Mid-Hudson Library System. The embodiment of the town’s connection to Revolutionary War era can be found in the Chancellor Livingston NSDAR (National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution) House which was owned by a Major General in that

Ferncliff Forest war, Richard Montgomery (77 Livingston Street; (845-871-1777). The house holds a collection of Revolutionary war historical artifacts particular to Rhinebeck and is open by appointment and for special events. There were many mansions built along the east side of the Hudson River from the 17th century through the Gilded Age by American business tycoons such as John Jacob Astor and Frederick Vanderbilt. One surviving house within Rhinebeck’s eight miles of river shoreline is Wilderstein (330 Morton Road; (845-876-4818), the estate owned by the family of Margaret (Daisy) Suckley, a cousin and confidante of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Queen Anne-style country house was designed in the late 19th century and is open for tours. Between the village center and the furthest town boundary, there are 437 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whatever era of American history you are interested in, Rhinebeck has a story to share.

Rhinebeck’s number one free attraction offers an amazing view of Hudson Valley from our Observation Tower. Enjoy hiking, picnics, camping or just walk your dog in our wonderful 200-acre Forest Preserve.

s part of the “bread basket” of New York, Rhinebeck is an obvious place to find locally grown food, whether in the field, at the farmers’ market, or skillfully prepared in a restaurant. In fact, it might be harder to find a restaurant in Rhinebeck that doesn’t feature locally raised food, especially in summer and fall. Local restaurants appear to take particular delight in featuring local produce on their menus and visitors and residents come expecting fresh food made to inspire. Terrapin’s elegant bistro fare has its sources clearly spelled out in the menu and patrons can often pair their food with drinks made from regional distilleries. Terrapin sponsors periodic themed dinners such as “Sunday Supper” featuring a four-course farm fresh meal accompanied by locally crafted beer and wine. The Local specializes in locally grown, seasonal, and sustainable American food and has quickly become a staple in a town full of great 10 |

RHINEBECK AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

restaurants. The restaurant is so serious about its commitment to “local” that it lists the sources for many of the main ingredients right on its website. Its sister establishment, The Shelter, offers craft cocktails and tapas with a Spanish flair using regionally sourced ingredients. Gigi Trattoria is another eatery that is notable for its emphasis on seasonally available ingredients, a neo-Italian style coined by chef/owner Laura Pensiero “Hudson Valley Mediterranean.” These are only a few examples of a local restaurant culture that places a high premium on local ingredients and supporting local farmers.

Rhinebeck also boasts one of the best farmers’ markets in a region full of bountiful markets and small farms. The 20-year-old market’s lively community atmosphere draws hundreds to the village on every Sunday from Mother’s Day through Thanksgiving to browse the farmers’ stalls, hear live music, enjoy delicious, fresh food, and, of course, mingle with neighbors. The variety and the opportunity to interact personally with farmers and food vendors are big draws. It has been voted Hudson Valley’s best six times and is featured by the Zagat Survey and Bon Appétit magazine as a top reason to visit the region. The market continues indoors on alternating Sundays through the winter. Even locally distilled liquor can be found at the source nearby in Pine Plains at Dutch’s Spirits at Harvest Homestead Farm, site of an historic Prohibition-era underground distillery that has been revived and restored in recent years. Several types of bitters, a peach brandy, and “Sugar Wash Moonshine” are available, some using ingredients grown nearby. Sunflower Natural Foods on Garden Street provides a constant source of organic produce and other healthy food year-round. The store features a café and juice bar and an extensive selection of organic produce, bulk items, and other goods. Of course, the simplest gustatory pleasure might be finding your food at a local farm or farm stand and bringing it home to eat at your own table. Rhinebeck is home to several small and medium-sized farms and the wider region has a plethora of farms: CSAs, pick-your-own, and more. Try Cedar Heights Orchard for apple picking in late summer and fall. Or visit one of the many small farm stands in the area including Migliorelli Farms on the approach to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge (open seasonally, through Christmas). Battenfeld’s Christmas Tree Farm has become a holiday tradition for many from near and far both for its beautiful trees and scenic location.

RHINEBECK AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Sinterklaas

THE HOTTEST PLACE TO BE ON A COLD NIGHT IN EARLY DECEMBER IS THE VILLAGE OF RHINEBECK during its annual Sinterklaas festivi-

ties. Based on a centuries-old Dutch Christmas tradition, the festival seeks to celebrate the area’s heritage with a modern spin that has drawn thousands of participants each year since 2008. Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) crosses the Hudson River from Kingston the last Saturday of November and a small celebration marks this occasion. The following Saturday (December 5th this year), Rhinebeck will come alive with free workshops and shows held all day, featuring local and regional artists, storytellers, performers, merchants, and more—with something for every age. The raucous, joyful parade starts just after dark and winds from the library through the village and features artistic paper and wood puppets: fantastic, moveable sculptures that reflect the various animals that have been chosen as the festival’s theme each year and significant characters in the Sinterklaas narrative such as the Wish Lady, the Grumpuses, and of course, Sinterklaas himself. These are accompanied by several marching bands and community music groups. Festival organizer Jeanne Fleming says Rhinebeck is the perfect setting for Sinterklaas, both for its physical charms and its spirit. “First, there is the charm and beauty of the village itself and all the wonderful spaces for performances and gatherings—plus the parade coming over the hill and into the beautifully illuminated main street. But more than the architecture and natural beauty, it is the community spirit of the residents, the folks in government and business, the library and churches. It’s their enthusiasm and willingness to join together to make a totally unique, gracious, magical and welcoming day for all those who come to partake. It really does take a village and we have a great one!” The festival is completely nonprofit, run by volunteers and funded by donations from the community. “Sinterklaas is a ‘hand-made’ event and it takes all those hands working together to make it happen,” says Fleming.

Last year’s parade was almost rained out, but that didn’t stop hundreds of spectators and 256 brave volunteers who paraded all the same. “It made us realize how much folks have come to expect Sinterklaas year after year—it has become a truly indispensable community tradition that really matters and brings folks together in a very particular way. Some folks even thought it was the ‘best ever’ because the spirits were so high and the commitment everyone’s part was so strong,” Fleming says. Children are the true stars of the festival. Each child is encouraged to make and bring a crown and a decorated branch (or scepter) to show that they are the kings and queens for the day. (Workshops are held in the weeks prior to the event where participants can make their own Sinterklaas regalia.) At the end of the parade, all bow to the children in deference. What is in store for 2015? Fleming says that’s a secret only to be revealed at the annual Star Party fundraiser in November, but fun and magic are guaranteed. Sinterklaashudsonvalley.com

Community Tree Lighting

T

he holiday season in Rhinebeck begins each year at the annual tree lighting ceremony at the end of November. Residents and visitors can get a jump start on the season’s festivities before the holiday rush (there’s a large Menorah, too, lit according to

the year’s Hanukkah calendar). It’s a great day to visit the many shops in the village before joining in the fun. There are winter-themed activities for the whole family followed by a parade through the village and then the tree lighting itself in Rhinebeck Bank Plaza on East Market Street. Among the many special features of the afternoon are musical performances by local groups and free horse-drawn wagon rides are provided by the members of 4-H “Gentle Giants” (an agricultural education program for young people) and their beautiful Belgian draft horses. According to Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Colleen Cruikshank, the Chamber and the many local groups who work together on the afternoon look forward to the occasion each year. “The streets are full of energy that day, and when everyone gathers around the tree for the kickoff of the holiday season, the crowd experiences everything that makes quintessential smalltown America so magical,” she says.

GETTING TO KNOW RHINEBECK

REAL ESTATE Andrew Halpern/Andyhalpern.com

Southlands Foundation offers riding and other outdoor activities on 200 acres overlooking the Hudson River.

A

ccessibility, affordability, great schools, history—all of these factors make Rhinebeck appealing. Whether you are attracted to the area for a job, for the great school system, or as a weekend home, Rhinebeck is likely to have the home or rental that is right for your budget and lifestyle. “We’re really where it’s happening now,” says Nick Staley of Staley Real Estate. “We’re on the map more than I’ve ever seen and I’ve been doing this now for 50 years.” His family has been in the home business for four generations if you count his grandfather, who built homes in the area as a contractor. Eventually his son, Staley’s father, opened a real estate firm in 1949 and now Staley and his sons operate it. While Staley admits home purchases are still on the slow side, coming out of the recession, he says land purchases are beginning to pick up and business is steady. “This is a great place to live; we have a very high quality of life. And we have reasonable prices on our real estate,” Staley says, noting that Rhinebeck has the perfect blend of charm and ease of access to the city. But unlike other places with similar (or better) access, Rhinebeck’s prices have managed to stay affordable. Staley points to many unique factors such as the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, Ferncliff Forest, and the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, which features biplane shows, rides, and historical presentations. “We have plenty of great 46 |

entertainment here, we have great restaurants, great shops,” he says, adding that recreation opportunities such as the Hudson River and many nearby ski slopes are huge draws. “There are lots of reasons people come to Rhinebeck.” According to Staley, the local rental market is “very hot” right now. He represents 50 landlords who have over 200 units and he says he cannot meet the demand for rentals. A recent rental, listed at $3,000 per month, had a waiting list within days. Many rent while they decide whether and where to buy. Staley says he also sees a lot of couples who either both commute (sometimes one to the north, one to the south) or who have one person who works locally and one who commutes; either way, Rhinebeck is a top choice as the perfect place to have home base. Finally, much of the market pick-up is due to weekenders. “Our second home buyers are back,” Staley says. With an Amtrak station within the town that offers free parking, weekenders and commuters alike can enjoy all that Rhinebeck has to offer and feel that they can easily move between the city and Rhinebeck whenever they like.

HEALTH CARE

B

enjamin Franklin once said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and you’ll find all the preventive health services you could wish in Rhinebeck. With an excellent hospital right in town and dozens of medical offices tucked into the surrounding community, Rhinebeck offers the complete gamut of healthcare options. Whether your needs include physical therapy or other kinds of treatments or stress relief best accomplished in a spa setting, you will find it all here. Northern Dutchess Hospital, a 68-bed acute care facility, provides high quality medical care but remains small enough to feel like a hometown hospital. It is now completing a $47 million new wing which will add six new operating rooms for advanced surgical procedures and more private, modern rooms complete with private bathrooms. As a member of the Health Quest family of healthcare institutions, Northern Dutchess provides a complete range of emergency, medical and surgical services. One of these is Neugarten Family Birth Center, the first of its kind in the state. The center delivers about 900 babies a year in a family-centered atmosphere and received a 5-star rating from Healthgrades in 2013. The hospital is also known for its Bone and Joint Center which offers comprehensive orthopedic services. It won the Women’s Choice Award for orthopedics in 2014. The Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center, a 10-bed state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility, is recognized for its high level of national accreditation and includes a large gym and private, modern rooms. Rhinebeck also has many fine general practitioners’ and specialists’ offices so families and individuals of any age and need range will find excellent local care options. A recent addition to the village’s integrative wellness scene is the IZLIND Institute, founded and directed by Dr. Beth Gershuny, PhD. IZLIND offers a diverse 48 |

collaborative of healthcare providers, consultants, and educators working in evidence-based conventional/traditional and holistic/complementary approaches to reduce stress, fortify health, and revitalize potential for the body, mind, and spirit. Local spas such as Haven, The WellTree, and I Kneaded This will provide you with the stress relief so necessary to maintaining good health. Located in historic buildings right in the village, these quiet spots will allow you to find relief in a beautiful setting. Yoga, Pilates, and dance studios abound in the area and enable practitioners of all experience levels to tone the body and soothe the soul. Of course Rhinebeck’s many trails are available throughout the year for recreation opportunities, whether by foot, on horseback or on a bike. Runners in particular thrive here as evidenced by the many 5K and longer races in the area such as the Mad Dash on Labor Day weekend and the annual Turkey Trot. Rhinebeck Tennis Club offers full-service opportunities to enjoy the sport year-round. In winter, avid players can continue on their stateof-the-art indoor court. It also hosts a rousing weekly pickle ball league and indoor soccer for all ages. During the regular tennis season the club is busy with leagues, clinics, and camps offered for every level of player. There are several golf courses within an easy drive as well .

EDUCATION

I

n Rhinebeck, individuals and families have access to education opportunities that serve the whole person. With a vibrant public school district and many private schools within easy reach, Rhinebeck families have many options to consider

While the school district may be small, it offers a high-quality experience for students and families. Students at every level have diverse study and extracurricular options. At Chancellor Livingston Elementary, the district’s partnership with villages and schools in Madagascar has provided rich opportunities for learning, arts, and cultural awareness, both for students and the wider community. Academically, the district ranks well, even in the new Common Core tests. In 2014, for the seventh year in a row, Rhinebeck High School was named to Newsweek’s best American high schools list with a ranking of 13th out of the 53 identified in New York State. With less than 400 students, the high school focuses on individualized learning and setting students up for success after graduation; it offers 10 Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The district is also known for its 12 competitive sports teams, including the boys varsity soccer team, which won the 2014 state championship. Rhinebeck also offers many opportunities for children with special needs, including Astor Services for Children and Families, a nonprofit whose residential program is based in Rhinebeck and which offers many day programs as well. The Anderson Center for Autism, New York’s premier autism treatment center, is several minutes south and offers both center- and community-based services. Camp Ramapo’s renowned summer camp for special needs children also has yearround programming for educators and students. There are many excellent nursery schools and daycares in the area that offer full and half-day enrollment, including Montessori and faith-based options. The newest addition is Primrose Hill

School, inspired by Waldorf educational philosophy and currently offering first to fourth grade enrollment. It is set on 9.5 acres just outside the village of Rhinebeck and includes a working farm. The Rhinebeck area is known for its proximity to several nationally recognized colleges as well, including Bard College in neighboring Red Hook; Vassar College, Marist College, and Dutchess Community College, are all just a short drive south in Poughkeepsie. The Culinary Institute of America is also nearby in Hyde Park. These institutions do more than provide a good local option for secondary education; they provide excellent give-back opportunities to the community, including numerous arts and cultural events, fresh chefs for local restaurant kitchens, able volunteers for community programs and more. Finally, there are institutions that cater to specialized learning and continued education, the kind only a place like Rhinebeck could nurture, such as the Southlands Foundation and its wellknown horsemanship school. The Omega Institute for Holistic Education offers continuing education and retreats at its beautiful lakeside campus with the goal of “awakening the human spirit.” www.rhinebeckchamber.com

WE’RE PLANNING AHEAD FOR A LIFETIME OF GREAT CARE. When it comes to providing Rhinebeck with top-notch medical care, we’re in it for the long haul. Our community deserves no less. After all, your children and your grandchildren are born here. It’s where you and your family come for your medical needs. Which is why we’re happy to report great progress in making Northern Dutchess Hospital a state-of-the-art facility.

• Private rooms for advanced patient care and more privacy when you visit loved ones • New operating rooms so we can offer you a wider range of complex surgeries • Medical offices so you can see your doctors, right here on campus
