Camp Shanks World War II Museum Known as “Last-Stop, USA,” Camp Shanks was the largest US Army port of embarkation for the European Theatre of War from 1942 until the end of hostilities. There are great places to dine, lodge and shop all along the way. These itineraries either start south and head north or bring you from north to south, crisscrossing the Hudson River along the way, but you can start any place. H U D S O N VA L L E Y H I S TO RY BEGIN WITH A VISIT TO LYNDHURST , an 1838 Gothic Revival mansion, designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and once owned by railroad baron Jay Gould. Take a guided tour of United States Military Academy at West Point. Highlights include the Cadet Chapel and Trophy Point with breathtaking views of the Hudson River. proceed north to Boscobel in Garrison, a great example of Federal architecture with an extensive collection of period furniture and decorative arts. The rose garden features 140 varieties of roses with a bubbling fountain as its center. Just below Hudson , near the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, tour Olana, the Moorish-style home of Frederic Church, a landscape artist of major importance to the Hudson River School movement. Lyndhurst Estate, Tarrytown Back across the river , stop by the
Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame in Goshen, also known as “the cradle of the trotter.” Local standardbred farms have long produced top champions including the most famous, Hambletonian. In Kingston , the Senate House State Historic Site, offers guided tours of the furnished historic house that served as the meeting place for New York State’s first Senate. Roosevelt Presidential Home, Library and Museum. Experience the very home where our 32nd president lived the majority of his life. Roosevelt was laid to rest on the grounds as well in the aesthetically pleasing Rose Garden. Back across the Hudson, view the oldest
surviving Dutch house in the Hudson Valley, Bronck House, in Coxsackie. This fine example of Hudson Valley Dutch architecture is furnished with period furniture and an important collection of regional textiles. To the west , is Prattsville, one of New York State’s earliest planned communities and once the site of the world’s largest tannery. capital of New York State, blends majestic historical architecture with an intriguing modern skyline. Lyndhurst Estate, Tarrytown In Poughkeepsie , about 25 miles south
of Kingston, are two more wonderful stops along this art trail with collections of paintings by Morse, Cole, Church, Gifford and Inness; Locust Grove Estate, the home of Samuel F.B. Morse, a respected artist in the 1820’s founder of the National Academy of Design and developer of the electric telegraph and Morse code.
