THE POWER OF MAIN STREET Solutions in this Economic Climate? Just Look Around By Gregory Schoenfeld

I

n the wake of the recent presidential election, there isn’t an American citizen who hasn’t been inundated with the ongoing debate over the state of the economy—and a host of suggestions to get back to prosperity. For years, we have heard politicians compare “Main Street” to “Wall Street” as an appeal to voters. Yet divisive speculation continues in Washington DC, and Wall Street’s struggles often seem far more distant than a two hour drive down the Thruway. Continued on p. 12

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Our Chamber community’s continued dedication to each other and the quality of life here is absolutely inspiring.

I

’d like to use this introductory space in the first issue of Regional Report for 2013 to discuss the Chamber’s role in economic development in the Hudson Valley. Our boutique approach to service and our location at Exit 18—the Gateway to the Hudson Valley—uniquely positions us to commit ourselves to building the vital strategic alliances necessary to thrive here, directly impacting our members’ bottom lines. As part of that commitment, we are proud to host Empire State Development President and CEO Kenneth Adams this January to discuss the Valley’s economic outlook. The State’s dedication to achieving stable and diversified local economies dovetails beautifully with our goal to establish ourselves as the go-to resource for vital business relationships. By helping to protect the entrepreneurial climate and sustainably strengthen the Valley’s economic position, we create an attractive and welcoming environment for new businesses, and advance established companies’ capability to grow, succeed, and to retain key employees. Tourism is a large part of our region’s economic composition, and our Chamber is uniquely positioned there as well. The Valley is very good at being charming on its own— one need only look to National Geographic Travler’s inclusion of the Hudson Valley in its list of 2013 Must-See Places among worldwide tourism destinations, where we are beautifully highlighted in the article alongside destinations from around the world, including Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia; Valpariso, Chile; Revenna, Italy; and Kyoto, Japan. Ours is the only Chamber in the Mid-Hudson

region with a walk-in tourism center, and our gorgeous and user-friendly new website, concierge-style tourism counseling services, and active social media presence mean our members’ messages reach those traveling here from across the country and around the world first. We’re hosting a seminar in January to help our members make the best use of their directory listing on www.newpaltzchamber. org, and are always happy to provide oneon-one discussions on the tools we’re now able to provide through our partnership with Chamber member WebLink International. We are so grateful to our members for sharing our commitment to making the Hudson Valley one of the best places in the country to live, work, play, worship, and do business. Our Chamber community’s continued dedication to each other and the quality of life here is absolutely inspiring. As we embark upon a new year, we invite you, as always, to share your experiences, challenges, and questions with us. We look forward to serving you throughout 2013 and beyond. Sincerely,

when love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece

OLD MEETS NEW IN A CHANGING MARKET

t’s an old saw of business practice that you must consistently adapt in order to stay current—and remain successful. Advancements in an almost unlimited range of technology are available, but increasing your technological arsenal is one part of the evolution of a business. While consumers are more tech-savvy than ever, able to access information anywhere, at any time, depending too heavily on the mechanization that technology can provide leaves consumers yearning for that oneto-one, “old-fashioned” kind of attention. Creating an effective blend of old and new requires a thoughtful inventiveness, and many Mid-Hudson Valley businesses are prospering by meeting that challenge.

FROM TRADITION TO INNOVATION

OUR EVOLVING HERITAGE As the Business Culture Expands, the Tradition Grows By Gregory Schoenfeld

A

s much as the age-old fields of unrivalled sweet corn, a pioneering innovative spirit also helps to shape the distinguished legacy of the New Paltz region. Case in point: The realized vision of Maurice and William Wurts who, in 1825, staged an impromptu appeal for investors in a café on Manhattan’s Wall Street. When their gambit garnered an astounding $1 million, the result was the groundbreaking, 108-mile trade route known as the D&H Canal, helping to put a sleepy, remote area on the map. Now, not two hours from the brash, nonstop roar of New York City, our bucolic retreat certainly still provides an entrancing alternative, and our rich history serves as a sedate and measured juxtaposition to the constantly shifting “modern” world. Still—in its perhaps more pleasant way—this region remains equally driven by determination and transformation. There is a unique strength that comes from being informed and influenced by our traditions, yet continually assimilating new ideas and new members to our culture.

“They want to escape to something from another era, and that’s what we are, and what we offer.” —Rob Rones, A Little Guest House

New-Old-Fashioned Hospitality

One of the primary definitions of the region’s character—and one of its chief economic engines—has long been the hospitality it offers, the promise of a country home-away-fromhome. The old-fashioned, amiable custom it presents, and bountiful cuisine that goes with it, is maintained by a steady complement of fresh energy and input. Rob and Gillian Rones and their quaint-country-home-turnedbed-and-breakfast, affectionately called 10

Above: Back patio and dining area of A Little Guest House.

A Little Guest House, provide a poignant testament. (It was former NPRCoC president Joyce Minard who recommend they use “A” instead of “The”, cleverly putting them at the top of the lodging listings.) Longtime weekend residents, the birth of the business was fueled by a desire to share their idyllic experience with other metro-area residents in need of a country getaway. The two transformed their 1850 High Falls farmhouse into their vision of the perfect country escape, reaching into the past to shape their business. “That’s why people come here,” explains Rob. “They want to escape to something from another era, and that’s what we are, and what we offer.” The Rones’ find that, even though they provide all the modern amenities, sometimes the most satisfying thing for their guests is to forego them. “People like to enjoy the slower pace—in the city everything is incredibly fast, it pushes you, and sometimes the best thing is detaching yourself from it,” says Rob. “For instance, though we offer WIFI, we have city guests who actually decide to put away their laptops!” he adds with a laugh. One of the newest and most promising additions to the New Paltz business landscape is another example of looking back to move forward: Darrin Siegfried’s Il Gallo Giallo. The Newburgh native returned to the area he loves after 26 years as a top-shelf chef and sommelier in New York City, opening his unique wine bar in early August. The yellow rooster insignia on the village’s Main Street heralds a menu truly comprised of the classic fruits of this region. “From the local beef to the locally-made artisanal cheeses to the famous sweet corn, I have such

an appreciation of the roots and the real truth of this area,” says Siegfried. As with the Italian cuisine he prepares, Siegfried is motivated by authenticity above all else. Adamant about sourcing locally, his largely Italian wine list features an exclusive selection of New York vintages, and his marrow bones and burgers alike feature local, grass-fed meat. “Though we’re a wine bar, you’ve got to have a great burger!” the chef asserts with a smile. Modern Tradition

Fresh local meat, in fact, is another deep-seated way of life in the New Paltz region, one that Brykill Farm’s Susan Eckhardt has put her own progressive stamp on. As a Bard College student, Eckhardt gained a love for the area; however, the art and art history student hadn’t the faintest inclination back then that she would one day join time-honored ranks of those who raise cattle. She bought Brykill in Gardiner in 1997, committed to fixing up an historic property. It was actually her growing concern for unhealthy and inhumane “Big Agriculture” practices—and 100 available acres—that motivated her to try farming. “I thought ‘well, how hard can it be to raise some beef on my own?’” says Eckhardt, jovially. “I was fortunate enough that a few old-time farmers and farming neighbors were either kind enough or curious enough to help.” Now, with 450 acres and a burgeoning business, Eckhardt recognizes and appreciates how much her humane, grass fed, sustainable approach has become an integral part of the local culture. “I love that this community has embraced agriculture with so much enthusiasm,” she explains. “Ulster County is becoming known as a place to go to check out the newest, coolest food and farming trends.” Rather than a new spin on a traditional business, J.T.S. Design Inc.’s Jeff Severson offers an approach to new technology richly steeped in time-honored local values. A lifetime Ulster Park resident, whose grandfather owned the town’s Vineyard Lodge—a piece of local history in its own right—Severson has no regrets about choosing to keep his web development business here in the region. “As someone who enjoys hiking and photography, the region’s natural beauty and many hiking opportunities is what makes it special to me,” says Severson. “It’s worth it for me to work from here. The pace, the community we have here helps me focus on the business.” After ten years and growing success, says Severson, the balance that defines his home continues to be the right choice. THE POWER OF MAIN STREET Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Main Street. The good news is, there is cause for optimism throughout the New Paltz regional landscape, and there are tried-and-true techniques and formulas for success that are natural extensions of our core community values. According to NPRCoC President Michael Smith, that optimism stems from a region vibrant with possibility. “We do have a very great location here for economic development,” suggests Smith. “We have the people, we have the talent. The engine is still here, from the tourism trade, to manufacturing, to the educational component. We have the power here to convert that into more jobs and to build even greater success.” Support Local

The statement “buy local” is far more than a message for bumper stickers and signs. It is an involved strategy for economic health, and a mandate for rejuvenating fiscally challenged municipalities. So posits 3/50 Project Founder and President Cinda Baxter, who has gained national prominence for her tireless efforts to support local business. “3/50” derives from her seemingly simple suggestion to choose three local businesses, and spend $50 in each—and Baxter offers a ready-made marketing kit to get the word out properly. Since the project’s inception in 2009, the retailstore-owner-turned-consultant has spoken continually throughout the country, touting cooperation and determination in support of independent business. Her 2010 New Paltz visit made a significant impression, says Baxter. “New Paltz stands out in my mind,” she recalls. “I was so impressed with the combination of attendees, and the enthusiasm that I saw there. That kind of energy really speaks loudly about what comes next—it’s a mindset that has success written all over it.” Taking care of your own backyard is at the heart of how the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union approaches its business. In stark contrast to big-picture-driven national banks, HVFCU presents a reliable, community-focused banking entity whose vitality depends directly upon that of its local customers. What started almost 50 years ago as a credit union for IBM Poughkeepsie employees

now serves Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, and Putnam Counties; and, according to Director of Marketing Lisa Morris, the company takes each relationship just as seriously now. “Our focus has always been to provide the high quality, affordable financial products and services our members deserve,” says Morris. “We want to be our members’ financial partner for life.” A strong local employer with over 850 staff members, HVFCU’s example is a reminder that supporting locally encompasses much more that just shopping at the corner store. “As a large local employer,” explains Morris, “we understand that when our local communities thrive, so do local businesses such as the credit union and our commercial members.” The Bright New Paltz Horizon

Looking for encouraging news in the region requires a trip no further than South Putt Corners Road, where C2G Environmental Consultants made its permanent home in 2009. Along with sister company, Green State Services, C2G provides the full array of environmental contracting and consulting services and products, with the stated mission of adhering to the highest EPA/DEC/OSHA standards (C2G stands for “Complete Compliance Guaranteed.”) Lending their expertise to higher standards—in the industry, and in the community—has been a key element of C2G’s success, as well. They were the primary consultant that worked with the DEC to write safety codes for the delicate work of Petroleum Bulk Storage, and have just recently partnered with

the NPRCoC to create the soon-to-be released “Practical Guide to Planning and Zoning for Business in New Paltz.” According to Director of Marketing Toni Hokanson, investing locally, and giving back to the community, is paramount to their continued growth—the company is a supporter of the New Paltz Police, Fire Department, and Rotary Club. “A strong company is one that combines philanthropy with providing jobs for the community,” Hokanson explains. The newest addition to the business landscape can be found right down the road, as Craft Beer Guild Distributing of New York puts the finishing touches on its new Ulster County location. The growing craft beer industry in New York State—and in the Hudson Valley in particular—made New Paltz the right choice. “We anticipate that by having a strong local presence, we will help elevate consumer interest in beer by helping to educate and serve the local beer community,” offers General Manager Paul Bussiere—who eagerly anticipates moving not only his business, but his family to the area as well. Of course, ideal logistics weren’t New Paltz’s only appeal for the Craft Beer Guild. “We couldn’t be happier to have settled in New Paltz,” Bussiere says enthusiastically. “The ethos of the community is very much in line with our personal and business philosophies. It embraces the type of business we are, and the products we sell.” Reinvesting to the local economy is very much a part of the company’s ethos, adds Sales Director Matt Rogers—and, with at least 25 new jobs available for the local workforce, that boon will be warmly welcomed.

Good-Old-Fashioned Ingenuity

Any plan for economic growth, at any level, must be built with responsibility, integrity, and the ability to innovate. In contrast to the conflicts that are evident throughout the nation, the regional business community is replete with examples of results garnered from a commitment to quality. At Sean Griffin’s Cornerstone Services, that accountability and forward vision is, in fact, a true cornerstone of his approach. Though Griffin’s field of mailing services has certainly been pressed by a plethora of new communication developments, a combination of precision and adaptability has kept him at the forefront for over 10 years. “Cornerstone is probably alive today through sheer Will—with a capital ‘W’,” explains Griffin. “In the past few years, it would seem absolutely incredible that a business such as ours could operate in Upstate New York in what one could easily call a ‘dying industry.’ However, my approach has been to stay focused on what I know works and innovate wherever possible. Will plus focus equals enormous results.” Results are equally essential, and just as hard-earned, for Ellenville Regional Hospital CEO, Steve Kelley. What is at stake is not only a major part of Ellenville’s struggling economy—over 200 jobs—but the health of every patient that depends upon the hospital’s diligence. Rising from crippling past budget difficulties, and operating in a fiscal environment that has seen a steady challenge for healthcare, Kelley and the hospital’s Board of Directors have settled for nothing less than excellence. “When you show that as the backdrop, it makes what we’re doing here even more remarkable,” Kelley proudly reports. How to rebuild, to revitalize—not to some average level, but to be one of the finest small hospitals anywhere. How are we going to take care of this community? We’ve had to think outside the box.” The hospital’s list of achievements is nothing short of remarkable: For instance, in 2012, they boasted the fastest emergency response time in all of New York. Perhaps Kelley’s proudest is winning this year’s Physicians Reciprocal Insurance Best Practices Award, an industry benchmark for quality. The hospitals that received honorable mention in the same competition? Both large capacity, big budget metro-area facilities. Reason for optimism, indeed.

THE BOTTOM LINE LEGISLATION AND NEWS THAT AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS Compiled by Gregory Schoenfeld

Tough Taxes in Tough Times

Opening a Fine Bottle

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently signed legislation allowing farm distilleries to sell their liquor at the New York State Fair, recognized county fairs, and not-for-profit farmers’ markets. The bill, which will take effect in early 2013, will allow farm distilleries to take their place at fairs and markets alongside breweries and wineries in order to sample and sell their products. To date, distilleries have only been permitted to offer those products on their own premises. The new law will require that distilleries hold a New York State Liquor Authority permit, and that a distillery representative be onsite to oversee tastings and sales. The new legislation represents acknowledgement at both local and state government levels about the blossoming craft beverage industry in New York, and its positive impact upon the state’s economy. “Governor Cuomo clearly recognizes the value of creating synergies among these growing industries,” said Assembly Member Kevin Cahill, “and his support will help these small businesses expand and draw attention to the top quality spirits made right here in our backyard.”

20

According to a recently released report by the Tax Foundation, New York State ranks lowest in the country as far as aggregate “tax climate” is concerned. The Tax Foundation, a non-partisan tax research group that has operated since 1937, reports that the tax burden at both a local and state level has worsened from the previous year, when New York ranked 49th. “Despite moderate corporate taxes, New York scores at the bottom this year by having the worst individual income tax, the sixth-worst unemployment insurance taxes, and the sixth-worst property taxes,” the report said. The Foundation cites startling figures like an average property tax burden of $2,105 per person, and a total average per-person payout of 12.8 percent of income in New York—far higher than the national average of roughly 9.8 percent. The report highlights differences between New York and states like Nevada, South Dakota, and Wyoming, which maintain a more agreeable business tax situation by imposing neither corporate tax nor personal income tax. Neighboring New Jersey ranked second-to-last in the report. Not In Our Backyard

The New Paltz Town Board recently approved local laws that prohibit the practice of hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as “fracking”, within the town. The ordinance, which offers a comprehensive list of restrictions, makes a strong statement and appeal to state government in Albany about concerns over the controversial drilling method. Town Supervisor Susan Zimet, who was a Public Relations specialist for groups that oppose fracking prior to her election to office, says that action like New Paltz’ is crucial. “The longer you take to study it, the more problems present themselves,” Zimet said. “So the longer we go without permitting it or issuing permits, the better chance we have of fracking not coming to New York.” Chief among the new town codes are the prohibition of land for “extracting, developing, and producing natural gas, oil, or other subsurface hydrocarbons,” as well as restricting fluids used in hydrofracking from municipal sewer lines.

Moving Towards Cleaner and Greener

In the Mid-Hudson Valley, a consortium of local officials and many other contributors are working steadily towards a substantive response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s “Cleaner, Greener Communities” program. Vying for over $90 million in available state grants, the Mid-Hudson region— comprised of Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan counties—recently offered its first draft of the Mid-Hudson Regional Sustainability Plan for public review. Cochaired by Greenburgh’s Commissioner for Community Development and Conservation Thomas Madden, and Orange County Commissioner of Planning David Church, the report focuses upon five core topics: Land use and transportation, agriculture and open space, energy, materials management, and water resources. The plan’s economic development and sustainable improvement initiatives are intended to take place at a municipal level; “We’re looking at this as a plan that counties and municipalities can implement into their local comprehensive plans to help them out,” Madden describes. More information about the continuing plan can be found at www.engagemidhudson.com.

MEMBER PROFILES Face-to-Face

By Gregory Schoenfeld

THERE ARE SO MANY PIECES THAT MAKE UP THE WHOLE of the New Paltz Regional business community,

each a vital and individual piece of the collective personality we present. The warm Mid-Hudson Valley greeting offered by those out on the front lines carries the strength of every facet of that diversity, welcoming each visitor with a depth that helps make the area much more than just the sum of it parts.

MEMBER PROFILE

Hurds Family Farm

T

he welcome of the Mid-Hudson Valley exists first and foremost in the bounty and beauty of its land, and the farmers that serve as both its ambassadors and its stewards. Clintondale’s Hurd family is an integral part of the farming community’s rich history, and in offering that culture and history to be shared with the region’s visitors. The business that became Hurds Family Farm on Route 32 in Modena was the result of a brainstorm in 1994—though, for co-owner Susan Hurd, the business was just a logical progression. “When our children were in preschool,” recalls Hurd, “we always invited their classes to come to the farm as a field trip—and that was the seed planted that is now blossoming.” Indeed, since that time, Hurds has blossomed into an interactive destination for visitors from near and far. 24

Centered around a classic Dutch barn that once belonged to one of the region’s most storied families—the Hasbroucks—the farm on Route 32 now features a host of seasonal activities and attractions that keep visitors connected with both the earth and the past. Featuring the apple orchards that have become a local tradition, Hurds customers can choose from a range of pick-your-own produce; their four-acre cornfield maze has become a local spectacle in its own right. After adding in hayrides, live concerts, and the farm’s educational programs, it is easy to see why Hurd proudly refers to her business as “a blossoming agri-tourism enterprise.” The focus for Susan Hurd, however, is the spirit of family community that gives the farm its singular appeal. “Our staff wears ‘team’ on the back of our shirts, and there’s a reason for that,” explains Hurd. “We do this

together. Friends and family help to make the spirit of this thing.” And, according to Hurd, that ever-expanding family includes their customers as well as their staff. “There is a real connection here—it just builds up over the years, because we go the extra mile. It’s the little things—the unexpected and spontaneous. That’s what keeps people coming back. We’re always looking forward to seeing them again.” We’re sure the feeling is mutual HURDS FAMILY FARM

f Ralph and Gable Erenzo represent the face of the region, then the region is wearing a big, inspiring smile. The father and son that make up the heart of Gardiner’s Tuthilltown Spirits are a telling example of how, when determination meets opportunity (and unparalleled local produce!), the result can be success. Yet when Ralph Erenzo bought Tuthilltown in 2001—a richly historical farm and gristmill that was once the focal point of Gardiner’s community—he wasn’t thinking about liquor, he was thinking about tired climbers. An avid climber and frequent Shawangunk Ridge visitor and enthusiast, unsatisfied with the campsites and motel rooms there were to choose from, Erenzo’s plan was to create a rock climbers ranch on his new property. When zoning difficulties prevented the plan from going forward—the land, fittingly, was zoned for agriculture—Erenzo was

undeterred. Following a friend’s good advice to “find an agricultural use for the property,” he partnered with Tuthilltown co-owner Brian Lee in 2003 and began to research and develop a distillery. The first whisky distillery in New York State since Prohibition was born; the market—and the local farming community—hasn’t been the same since. To understand the appeal of the tasting shop and open-to-the-public distillery that draws visitors year round, it is essential to consider Tuthilltown’s proudest feature: 90 percent of the fruits and grains they use are sourced within ten miles. According to Gable Erenzo, it is the area itself that is the ultimate selling point. “It would be totally accurate to say we embody the spirit and character of the local region,” he explains. “By taking fruits and grain that were grown in local soil, with local water, by local people, and distilling that

down to its essence, we capture the area, the people, and the harvests in the bottle, then share it with the world.” And that produce from local farms—like Tantillo’s Farm Market—is indeed travelling the world, as Tuthilltown’s Hudson Whiskey line is being distributed in Europe, Australia, and soon will move into Asia. “Gardiner grains are going to the top restaurants all over the place,” says Ralph Erenzo. “It’s just amazing.” TUTHILLTOWN SPIRITS PO Box 320 14 Gristmill Lane Gardiner, NY 12525 845-633-8734 Fax: 845-255-1527 Ralph Erenzo www.tuthilltown.com

ppreciation for the region’s many treasures begins with creating awareness of and access to all that it has to offer—and, at Ulster County Tourism, stewardship of the area’s multitude of offerings is literally a full-time job. Established in 1971, Ulster Tourism is charged with the mission “to bring tourists and tourism dollars into the county, and to expand economic development opportunities by not only promoting Ulster County regionally and nationally, but internationally as well.” A tall order to be sure, says Tourism Director Rick Remsnyder, and certainly not without its challenges. Yet since Michael Hein became County Executive in 2009, their efforts have ascended to a level of effectiveness that is paying real dividends for Ulster County. “Almost immediately after taking office as County Executive, Mike Hein made tourism the priority it should be in Ulster County,” Remsnyder explains, “and dedicated the necessary resources to make the county’s tourism operations a huge success.” That success takes shape in almost as many forms as there are attractions in Ulster, starting with the new Ulster Tourism office. Hein’s expansive vision made reality, the new visitors center in Kingston’s waterfront district is a tourist attraction unto itself, and a veritable doorway to the rest of what the county has to

offer. The numbers also reflect that Ulster Tourism’s efforts have been well spent, says Remsnyder. He cites an increase of 6.5 percent in County Occupancy Tax collected in 2012 over the previous year, a reliable benchmark used to evaluate the tourism sector. In addition, the official Economic Impact for Tourism in New York study found that visitors spent $453 million in Ulster County in 2011, a 5.3 percent increase over the previous year—encouraging news, especially in the wake of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. New developments, like the ongoing work towards creating a continuous, thirty-two-mile rail trail, are just more cause for redoubled enthusiasm. Of course, says County Executive Hein, the true reward exists in simply sharing the diverse appeal of Ulster County itself. “Ulster County is the best place in the world to live, work, visit, and raise a family,” posits Hein. “Our history is fascinating, and our scenery is spectacular. It is an honor to help promote all that Ulster County has to offer!” ULSTER COUNTY TOURISM 20 Broadway Kingston, NY 12401 845-340-3566 Rick Remsnyder www.ulstertourism.info

A

ny New Paltz aficionado, be they visitor or resident, would agree that one of its most compelling charms is its eclecticism. That same admirer would be hard pressed to consider both “New Paltz” and “eclectic” and not think of Jonathan and Amy Cohen’s Main Street staple, Groovy Blueberry. The counter-culture feel that the shop maintains is as genuine as it gets, rooted in Jonathan Cohen’s first visit to New Paltz. In 1972, fourteen-year-old Cohen hitched a ride from New York City (in a Volkswagen bus, of course)—ending up at the legendary local Split Rock swimming hole, forever to be captivated by the local flavor. When it came time for the adult Cohen family to make a life-changing move, New Paltz was the obvious choice. The sum total of both Jonathan’s experience owning retail clothing stores in New York’s Brooklyn and Amy’s background as a fine artist and textile designer were poured into their new venture. “The original Groovy Blueberry store on Main Street in New Paltz was a natural,” Amy explains. “We wanted to live somewhere beautiful and wholesome—a hometown for our growing family.” As the Cohen’s family has grown as a part of the New Paltz community—they and their three children live in the village, right

near the store—so has their business. What began as a splash of local color fifteen years ago has taken flight into a national brand. Two years ago, the Cohens expanded, renovating an historic house next to Water Street Market on the Walkill River and making it their distribution headquarters. Yet Amy Cohen asserts that, at the business’ core, nothing has changed. The “family” in “family business” has simply widened to include a larger clan of past and present staff, as well as the many local artisans and artists who have their wares displayed among the store’s signature handmade tiedyes. And a significant part of their brand is the community itself, says Amy. “We care very much about our local community,” she proclaims, “and we are proud of our family, our artists, our staff, and of our home. In fact, a Groovy Blueberry product is a little piece of New Paltz ,wherever you may send it!” GROOVY BLUEBERRY 57 Main Street New Paltz, NY 12561 845-256-0873 Amy Cohen www.groovyblueberry.com
