Will you still need me? Will you still feed me?

When I’m 64...

“People who are willing to change their lifestyle habits or who already have started exercising and paying attention to what they eat generally do the best in weight loss studies. It is about long term changes and the main thing you have to be is willing and able to put the time and effort into changing your lifestyle.” ~Vicky Fink, Registered Dietitian

How the metabolic changes of aging affect your health Are you over 40? Then you probably know something about wrinkles or grey hair. . . While the outward manifestations of the aging process are readily apparent, the internal, metabolic and hormonal changes are less obvious, but have significant health consequences. Is it getting harder to keep off those extra pounds? Your basic metabolism is slowing down. Sex drive on the wane? Your testosterone or estrogen levels are falling.

The particular benefits of clinical research study participation for the elderly:

~ Increased study related medical surveillance; Regular study visits with physicals, blood work and EKGs provide close monitoring of physical function . . . oftentimes discovering potential problems before they cause symptoms. ~ Many RCR studies are geared to address the medical concerns of aging: Influenza & shingles vaccines, therapies for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, gout, arthritis, etc. ~ Regular visits to the office can also help with the social isolation that many elders feel. The coffee is always brewing at RCR . . . come have a cup with us!

The aging process is a complex interplay of genetics, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, and good old fashioned life stress. Aging affects every cell in your body. As we age, our blood vessels become less elastic – making high blood pressure more likely. The slowing of our metabolism can lead us to carry extra weight, making our pancreas work harder. If the pancreas gives out, we might develop type 2 diabetes. If our cholesterol is too high, it builds up in our arteries over time, making heart attack or stroke more likely. In similar fashion, uric acid can build up in our bloodstream as we age, particularly as our kidneys become less efficient at excreting it, increasing our chances of developing gout. Our immune systems become less robust, increasing the importance of regular flu shots, and of getting vaccinated against pneumonia. So what’s the good news? That despite all the physical challenges of the aging process, people are generally living longer and remaining vigorous into their 70s, 80s & 90s, and that making healthy choices now can pay big dividends later in life.
