E

lizabeth City has a deep-rooted history of Black stories, heritage and families that serve as a base in our community. Take a self-guided tour of these 5 important sites and moments in Elizabeth City’s history to celebrate and remember those who helped shape the City we know and love today.

1

Elizabeth City’s picturesque waterfront is so much more than a scenic river view. The Pasquotank River holds an abundant history as a gateway to freedom for many enslaved African-Americans in northeastern North Carolina. It was the first river ever recognized as part of the National Park Service’s National 24

Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. You can visit the Network to Freedom marker and immerse yourself in the scenery and beauty of the historic riverfront in downtown Elizabeth City.

2

In 1863 a brigade of Black soldiers, many of whom had previously been enslaved in the region, returned to our waterfront town under the command of Brigadier General Edward Augustus Wild. In a three-week-long expedition known as Wild’s Raid, this brigade freed most of the remaining enslaved people in Elizabeth City and the surrounding counties totaling approximately 2,500 people. Visit the newly-installed historic marker at Mariners’ Wharf. 25

3

Elizabeth City's own HBCU, Elizabeth City State University, was founded in 1891 as a Normal School for the purpose of “training teachers of the colored race to teach in common schools of North Carolina,” and marked a significant period in African-American history. Today, ECSU is one of the ‘Top Performers on Social Mobility’ according to U.S. News and World Report, one of Military Times ‘Best Bet for Vets’, and is the only university in North Carolina offering a bachelor’s in Aviation Science. Take the campus walking tour and explore the rich history of this University through the decades.

4

Founded in 1920, the Albemarle Bank was the first African-American-owned bank in all of northeastern North Carolina. This gorgeous structure is still standing in beautiful, downtown Elizabeth City on the corner of South Poindexter and East Fearing streets! This bank provided clientele with savings and loans opportunities; especially important services during the era when Black people in the United States endured segregation and other forms of legal discrimination.

5

Also located downtown is Mt. Lebanon AME Zion Church. This church is one of the most beautiful churches in Elizabeth City! Founded in 1850, it is one of the oldest historically Black churches in northeastern North Carolina and we're proud of the history and heritage it holds. This list doesn’t even scratch the surface of all there is to explore in Elizabeth City, but it’s a great start!
