“Bridging Business and Community through Relationships that Connect”
Welcome to Melissa!
We are located roughly 45-minutes, drive north of Dallas and 45-minutes, drive south of the Oklahoma state line. While we may be a smaller city with a population of roughly 23,000 - and growing, we are a dynamic city with a national standards sports facility (The Z-Plex) - featuring baseball, tennis & soccer. We are also home to a Texas icon, Buc-ees, with a second Texas icon coming in 2026, HEB. Our Melissa Independent School District proudly ranks in the top 10 ISD’s in Texas.
The Melissa ISD is a 5A school district with a current enrollment of 5,700 kids and enrolling more students each week! We have 1 high school which continues to add campus buildings; 1 middle school – heading for expansion in the next year or so; a 6th grade center and 4 elementary schools, with a 5th elementary currently being developed. The ISD is also undergoing construction of a multi-million dollar football stadium opening in 2024 which is sure to be a major city highlight!
Melissa is 11.5 square miles with approximately 7,000 homes already established. Melissa is built over 3 state highways – Hwy 75, Hwy 5 and Hwy 121, which is certainly unique as our growth can often be affected by state highway improvements and regulations. These three highways also make it incredibly easy to access or leave Melissa. We have numerous strip centers and with the coming of an HEB store in 2026, we expect a number of box stores to come to Melissa then as well. Melissa will soon be home to 3 luxury townhome rental developments and at present, 9 more multifamily developments, together roughly 1,400 units.
In addition, Melissa has started undergoing what is known as the Downtown Overlay (refurbishment) and over the next few years will be adding a new retail complex near the historic heart of Melissa Downtown area. The newly added retail complex will include stores such as Aces Hardware. Our Historic Downtown is currently home to a number of established businesses - including a nationally renowned Bella Couture Salon, a gorgeous boutique, and a few more businesses, including the office of Melissa’s Chamber of Commerce. Melissa’s Historic Downtown area – although small for now – has an interesting history with only three buildings surviving the tornado of 1922. Two of
those buildings are seen today on Cooper Street (the old bank building) and Barker Street off Hwy5 (the Barker House).
In Melissa, we have residents from 35 countries, speaking 29 languages in our homes and so we are certainly a diverse population but still with a number of residents who have been here for multiple generations since Melissa was much of a farming community.
Melissa is home to a number of churches - the larger 3 being First Melissa, City Church and Melissa United Methodist Church.
Melissa is very unique in that we celebrate big when it comes to our kids! Friday Night Lights is a weekly highlight during football season, and sports in our schools is as big as our academic focus is. Our ISD is the largest employer in Melissa with over 500 staff on payroll.
Melissa residents love our small town feel and while we may be growing, and maintaining that will become more of a challenge, we come together like no other in times of need. We have a few 501(c)3 charities that look to serve the residents of Melissa, such as, “Melissa Rotary Club”, “Melissa Pays it Forward”, “North Texas Feed the Need” and “Helping Hands with Helping Hearts”.
Melissa residents come together for local events, like Friday Night Football, the ISD’s annual “Heart of the Arts”, Historic Downtown’s Heart of Melissa events, city parades, National Night events in the various neighborhoods, the Rotary hosted Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies at city hall, and much more!
If one were describe Melissa in a few words, these are some of the most used….”family oriented”, “unique” and “small town feel”. Our residents are friendly and genuinely care for one another!
Melissa is growing and so is our commerce. We are constantly welcoming new business to Melissa, so if you are looking for somewhere great to live, to visit or to bring your business, Melissa is definitely a Texas city to consider! At the Melissa Chamber of Commerce, we are Bridging Business and Community through Relationships that Connect.

First Melissa
Since 1884, the First Melissa church family has shared the joy and hope of Jesus Christ with our neighbors in Melissa, Anna, McKinney and beyond. We've seen our own community develop from rural farmland into a booming suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Through all of this, our objective has remained the same: taking the good news of Jesus to a world in constant struggle and change. The message of Jesus never changes: God loves us and has a plan for our lives. All have sinned, but God sent His son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. It is up to each of us to accept this gift and follow Him. As culture and technology advance, those changes bring new opportunities for us to share this gospel message with the world around us.
Known as "The Great Commission," Jesus said in Matthew 28:19-20, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
At First Melissa, this is our calling.
We are disciples of Jesus making disciples - a family of Christ-followers who believe that God can fundamentally change your life and that His Word, the Bible, is where we discover how His presence in our lives matters both now and for eternity. We want everyone to experience the breakthrough of knowing and following Jesus as Savior. We warmly invite you to come worship with us and find your place in our community on Sunday mornings for in-person worship services at 9 am or 10:15 am. You will find lots of engaging activities and events for the entire family throughout the week. You can learn more online at www.firstmelissa.com and via our mobile app. We look forward to welcoming you!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has four local congregations that meet in Melissa. The meetinghouse has been a Melissa landmark since 2009 and is located right off Highway 75 on Melissa Road. Members of the church are very active in the community and always looking to help and serve in a Christian way.
Meeting times are 9 am, 10:30 am, 12 pm, and 1:30 pm. Visitors are welcome every Sunday.
City Church Melissa
City Church Melissa was started in 2014 when a group of local families came together with the desire to see the community they loved transformed by the love of Jesus Christ. We have a vision to see the Kingdom of God here in our community as it is in heaven and we see this happening all around us as our church family strives to live for the glory of God and the good of this city.
We do this by remembering and living in accordance with these values:
1) It’s not about us.
2) The Word does the work.
3) We all share in the ministry.
4) The Church is a family.
City Church gathers on some of the most beautiful property in all of Collin County at 2300 Vineyard Hill Ln. Our Sunday worship gatherings are at 9:00a & 10:45a. Our City Church Kids & Littles Ministries are both open for your birth through 5th grade children during these gatherings. These ministries will teach the gospel to children in an age appropriate manner and prepare teenagers to be active participants in the church family.
We encourage teenagers to worship with their families on Sunday mornings and come back on Wednesday evenings for Student Groups. We offer Student Groups for each grade level from 6th12th grade. Middle School Student Groups meet at 6:30pm and High School Student Groups meet at 7:30pm. We have many other small group gatherings throughout the week to equip the church and grow together as a family. You can find a detailed calendar and more details about our church on our website: www.citychurchmelissa.com We’d love to meet you!

The Melissa Chamber Ambassador Program
The Melissa Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program allows for members to serve in areas of expertise and to support the mission of the Chamber. Ambassadors are volunteers who commit to levels of service and support.
Ambassadors who serve, earn points for their service in a number of areas. For example, attendance at the regular Chamber events such as luncheons, networking coffees and ribbon cuttings will earn the particular Ambassador Service Points.
Ambassadors provide service in the form of outreach to members and conduct surveys of members to ensure the Chamber is meeting expectations and providing value to the Chamber Members.
Ambassadors also reach out to new and existing business in Melissa, to invite them to join the Chamber and to attend the various events that the Chamber conducts.
Ambassadors provide service through their own particular skill sets, such as social media and/or I.T support including data entry and data analysis. Some provide Organizational skills for major events and activities. Some serve through personal contact and member support. Ambassadors provide communication to members to ensure they are aware of special events that would be of value to the members.
The Ambassadors meet on a regular basis to ensure engagement and alignment with the Chamber Board’s mission and vision. While Ambassadors work with a level of autonomy, the subcommittee leadership, through regular contact and meetings, ensure that the efforts enhance the goals of the Chamber at large.
If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador for the Melissa Chamber of Commerce, please contacts us at melissachamberambassadors@gmail.com or (972) 837-4277
History of Melissa, Texas
Melissa, is located seven miles northwest of Mckinney just off State Highway 75, in north central Collin County. From this community came many individuals and families who have been prominent in the business and professional life or Collin County. Some of the first settlers came from the old Highland community, which is located two and one half miles north of the present day Melissa.
It was here that C.H. Wysong settled as early as 1846. A Post Office was established and Isaac N. Foster became the first Postmaster on September 8, 1853. The location of the Post Office was located at Foster Crossing about 3 miles north of Melissa.
The rich soils of the Blackland Prairie and the waters of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River attracted settlers to the area in the 1840s, when the Central Railroad was built through the community and the town of Melissa was laid out. Many of the residents of Highland, which was not on the railroad route, moved to the new location. The pioneers who settled near Melissa were Dr. William Throckmorton, R.E. Moore, G.W. Taylor, T.M. Scott, John and William Fitzhugh, Albert Shirley, Lewis Shirley, James M. Graves, Hogan Witt, John Coffman, Thomas Rattan, Josiah Nichols, Jesse Martin, John M. Nicholson, Lindsey Lewis, J.M. Kincaid and the Orenduffs. Sources disagree as to the origin of the name of the town,. Some state that Melissa was named for Melissa Quinlan, daughter of George A. Quinlan, an official of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, while others say that
it received its name for Melissa Huntington, daughter of C.P. Huntington, a prominent railroad executive. On May 16, 1873, James R. Rogers was appointed to be Melissa’s first Postmaster.
In 1886 Melissa had a flour mill, two cotton gins that shipped 3,000 bales of cotton annually and several business houses. It became a stop on the interurban (The Texas Electric Railway), linking Dallas and Denison in 1908. This transportation network made Melissa a commercial and community center for area farmers. By 1914 its population had reached 400. Unlike many rural communities in Texas, Melissa had electric lights, a telephone exchange, and paved roads before 1920. It also had five churches, a large school, and a number of businesses, including a bank.
A tornado struck the town on April 13, 1921, killing thirteen people, injuring fifty-four, and demolishing many homes and businesses. Eight years later, August 8, 1929, a fire destroyed many of the buildings that had been rebuild after the tornado.
The Great Depression, the mechanization of farming, and job opportunities in the Dallas metropolitan area after World War II further slowed community growth. The population of Melissa declined from a high of 500 in 1925 to 285 in 1949. In 196 it was 375. Melissa was incorporated in the early 1970s. In 1990 its population was 557.

Melissa High School Kenny Deel Stadium
Kenny Deel grew up in nearby Leonard, Texas and graduated from East Texas State University. After graduation, Kenny received a call in 1987 from Melissa Schools about a Teaching and Coaching position, which he accepted.
He served as a science teacher and the boys Athletic Director and Coach for the first two years of his tenure, then he took over both the Boys and Girls athletic programs for several years. Kenny served Melissa Schools as the Athletic Director along with many different roles for the first 16 years of his career with Melissa ISD.
The first phase of his career was very rewarding - building relationships with the students and memories that will last forever. When Melissa started the current new high school, Kenny Deel was moved into the administrative role of Executive Director of Operations. Mr. Deel says that it has been an honor to be part of our growing school district and to have overseen the construction of all our new facilities.
This will be Kenny’s 36th year as a Melissa Cardinal and says that he is just as excited to come to school as when he first started!
Mr. Deel goes on to say, “I am truly Blessed and humbled to be part of this great community and school district. I am happily married to Lauren Deel and we share 4 kids who were all cardinals and 2 Grandkids. Jaxson is currently a sophomore at Melissa High School, and Oliver is 10 months old. It is a tremendous honor to have our new stadium named after me, and I am eternally grateful to our school board and administrative staff and community”.
