ANDERMATT, SWITZERLAND

JEAN-YVES BLATT GENERAL MANAGER, THE CHEDI ANDERMATT We have a chat with Jean-Yves Blatt, the General Manager at The Chedi Andermatt to hear more about what it takes to run a destination of this prowess and the everyday inspirations one needs to draw to put the customers first.

WHAT IS THE MAIN INSPIRATION THAT DRIVES YOU? Definitely the passion for the hospitality industry and for creating the best possible experience for our guests as a team. Which is why we -The Chedi Andermatt team and I- are always striving to embrace new trends in the luxury hotel market in the style of our hotel and, of course, to actively create and set those. At The Chedi Andermatt, our mission and vision is to constantly innovate and develop the luxury hotel industry's core values in order to exceed the expectations and needs of our guests.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN HOSPITALITY? I have been fascinated and inspired by this field since my early childhood. In fact, growing up in the "hospitality world" rooted being a host in my DNA. Therefore, I could never envision myself aspiring to be a part of any other industry than the world of hospitality.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INTERESTING THING IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? The daily interaction with people. The interaction with my team at The Chedi Andermatt is one of the most rewarding aspects of my profession, as well as the constant exchange with our guests. It is the combination of communication and exchange that allows us - as The Chedi Andermatt to deliver the level of service for which we are renowned and respected amongst the luxury hotel professionals. 12

WHERE DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY LIES? Our world is becoming increasingly more digital, and so the hospitality industry. Early on, we recognized this digitalization trend at The Chedi Andermatt and proactively defined it for Switzerland by starting with the implementation of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. This implementation was just the beginning of further digital projects that we will launch in the coming years.

WHAT WAS THE PROUDEST MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER? Thankfully, throughout my career there have been many moments that I am proud to call a highlight. Although one of my greatest achievements has been to shape The Chedi Andermatt in to what it is now. Prizes and awards like these are clearly among the highlights and moments that make me proud as a hotelier.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SETS YOUR DESTINATION APART FROM OTHERS? The Hotel The Chedi Andermatt, certainly. But it is also the versatility of the destination throughout the seasons that makes it attractive to our guests and keeps them coming back and this is absolutely unique compared to other destinations.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE OF? The hotel industry is currently facing new challenges and as a result is in a state of continuous reinvention and ongoing transformation. Therefore, the industry requires courageous people with innovative ideas who are brave enough to redefine the branch of hospitality.

IF YOU COULD GIVE SOME ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PURSUE THIS CAREER? The hotel industry is a unique and very fascinating profession. In order to embark on this career, one should possess ambition and perseverance. In addition, being determined and audacious, doing something bold and innovative, is essential.

SPA MANAGER FEATURE SPALATO SPA, RADISSON BLU, SPLIT

LIZA MURIDIAN SPA MANAGER, SPALATO SPA

19

We’ve heard it all over the last few years, pandemic this and pandemic that but have you ever wondered what it takes to face the pandemic in one of the most affected industries? We sit down with Liza Muridian to hear more about the person behind running and managing Spalato Spa and its highly esteemed team.

WHAT IS THE MAIN INSPIRATION THAT DRIVES YOU? Creative environment, teamwork, and being able to draw a connection between my efforts and the organization’s bottom line. One of the things I love the most about my job is witnessing the results of our team’s campaigns and watching as the leads we nurtured became customers. Having the opportunity to be part of a big and global organization is one of the main motivations..

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN HOSPITALITY? Due to the diversity and fast-growing phase of the industry, hospitality requires you to work in a multicultural environment. The new technology is already a part of many processes and its potential to enhance the host-guest relationship is immense. Entering the industry during this transformation period is an exciting prospect.

IN YOUR JOURNEY, UP UNTIL THIS POINT, WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND MOST INTERESTING? The constant development, as well as the switch in priorities. Working in the hotels became more varied. The changing taste of travelers has led to ever more unique and personalized accommodation experiences. Spa and wellness, Fitness teams, Nutritionists are new and very important features of the modern hotel industry, which is surely a very interesting trend for me..

20

WHERE DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY LIES? I truly believe that the industry will move away from traditional bed and breakfast to the health and wellbeing concept. Recreational facilities, health-conscious menus, and workout equipment in rooms make up the future of hotels.

WHAT WAS THE PROUDEST MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER? We have had lots of success as a team in many ways. The highlight would be the successful reopening of the Spalato Spa after the renovation, building a new and very strong team during the Covid-19 pandemic, keeping the team motivated, and the level of the guests’ satisfaction on its highest possible level during these challenging times!

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SETS YOUR DESTINATION APART FROM OTHERS? Recreational facilities, beautiful views, fresh air, and extraordinarily friendly staff.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE OF? Digitalization and high technology are often perceived as a replacement for human beings but in the hospitality business, this should not be the case. Employees and service should always stay a high priority and that’s what the industry needs to focus on.

IF YOU COULD GIVE SOME ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PURSUE THIS CAREER? This is an industry where flexibility and positive intelligence are the key! Working in hospitality can be fun, but very challenging at times. Also, the industry is developing very fast, going through different stages. My advice would be to stay up to date with the world market, be open-minded, adapt to the fast changes and have fun!
