From celebrities in Roaring Twenties Paris to rapidly changing 1930s New York to key scientific moments in the 1950s, Berenice Abbott made images that shaped how we still see her world. Photography curator Van Haaften’s biography of Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) rightly positions her as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Raised by a single mother, Abbot experienced an unhappy childhood. She moved to New York City to study sculpture and was drawn to the subcultures and bohemian literary figures of Greenwich Village. Living in Paris, she discovered photography and worked as Man Ray’s assistant; she also met the documentary photographer Eugène Atget shortly before his death in 1925 and spent the next several years promoting his work. Abbott returned to New York and began a long-term documentary project on Manhattan, culminating in 1939’s Changing New York. Van Haaften spent several years interviewing Abbott in her Maine home; the result is an intimate view of Abbott’s approach to photography as well as her personal life, including her 30-year relationship with art critic Elizabeth McCausland.

Drumroll please…. Answer: Inner Peace! What?? Not sexy enough for you? Not exciting enough? Maybe not even exciting enough to warrant an “!” Or earth shattering enough to wake you in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, screaming, “I need more peace in my life!” No. That’s not how peace rolls. Peace is one of those things that falls in the “out of sight – out of mind” category, similar to the foundation of your house. But without it, well, your house won’t last very long as the strong, stable structure you’ve grown to rely on to support your outer needs.

Peace, my friends, is what supports your inner-most needs. And for that reason, I find it sexy and exciting as hell, regardless of its knack for subtlety.

Here’s What I Know about Inner Peace: peace is a present-moment-thing, it occurs in the here and now therefore, don’t go chasing after peace, it isn’t a good idea since it’s not a future event similarly, you may have had peace in your past, but if you don’t feel it now, in your present, there’s no use longing or lamenting, you’re just wasting your time when you feel peace in your present, acknowledge it, honor it — find ways to celebrate it the more you trust yourself, the more you will experience peace my belief that the Divine lives within each of us, allows me to trust with all of my heart and mind — bringing more inner peace in my life. This can work for you, too. peace and inner conflict cannot exist simultaneously peace does not necessarily mean quiet once I learned how trust works, peace entered my life, and the insomnia I battled off and on for nearly 20 years exited my life.

Peace Can Look Different For Each of Us So what exactly does peace look like? Feel like? I’m sure you’ve felt it before. But to describe it, I’d say for me: Looking deeply into my eyes in the mirror and seeing someone who has learned to appreciate her outer beauty, as well as her inner beauty feels like peace.

omething has happened to the simple white wedding sheath – and it has led to revolutionary changes in the wedding dress design busi-

ness. Far from boring, wedding dresses have taken on a “designer” look, becoming not just a wear-it-for-oneday-and-store-it-away affair, but a style statement, a reflection of the bride’s personal taste; a dress that, yes, may actually be adapted for future use. Who knew?

The wedding dress has turned into a designer’s dream.

With dramatic looks, overlays, beading, feathers and sexy illusion fabrics, the bride can express herself in true contemporary designer style. Forget the 7th Avenue mass-produced sea of me-too white wedding dresses that all look alike. Some of the “hautest” of haute couturiers now have a wedding collection, as they dress their clients from teen years through marriage in custom-made couture to make them look special as they walk down the aisle.

The 2018 New York Spring and Fall Bridal Markets were no exception as designers continued to push the design envelope by marrying designer runway looks with bridal tradition – or in some cases, not at all. While May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

he second annual Memory Gala was held in March where more than 200 guests joined the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, followed by a seated dinner, and the evening concluded with dancing and

This year honored former NFL Great, Marty Schottenheimer (diagnosed with Alzheimer’s) and his wife Pat. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; and to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to help reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Their vision is a world without Alzheimer’s.

The Western Carolina Chapter provides patient and family services, information and referral, education, and advocacy in the 49 central and western North Carolina counties that serves over 100,000 people currently living with Alzheimer’s disease in these counties. They provide a variety of services including a 24/7 Helpline, support groups, educational programs, and MedicAlert®. They offer many opportunities to get involved and to make a difference.

ancing with the Stars of Charlotte to Benefit the Pink House—which took place at Knight Theater to a sold-out house—had a lot going for it: excitement, glitz, fancy footwork AND an important cause. And now, an additional claim this fundraiser boasts is that it is one of the fastest-growing fundraising events in the city, having gone

from an audience of 440 in 2016 to selling out the entire Knight Theater of 1100 seats the same day they went on sale.

This year’s event raised a record $682,743. That’s roughly $250,000 more than last year’s event and brings the total donations in 3 years to $1.55 million.

The show is modeled after the popular Dancing with the Stars television show. Local stars, paired with professional dancers, each learn and perform a ballroom dance routine that is scored by world class judges from the competitive dance world while audience members vote for their favorite Star by making donations to Carolina Breast Friends. Each dollar donated is equivalent to one vote.

WBTV’s Molly Grantham and former NFL star DeAngelo Williams—both of whom have lost close family members to breast cancer—masterfully emcee the show. At the end of the night, a mirror ball trophy is given to the top fundraiser, the biggest crowd pleaser, and the highest-scoring dancer.

Another special feature of the event is that each year it is held in memory of someone the city has lost to breast cancer. This year’s event was dedicated to Elizabeth Ratcliffe Rayburn, a dynamic wife and mother who lost her life to breast cancer at the age of 56. Her son, Joe Rayburn, danced in her honor as one of this year’s Stars. Said one audience member, “I love that in addition to this being a knock-out show, you never forget that it’s about an important cause and need. It’s in memory of someone who died of breast cancer, and it’s about supporting the needs of so many people still struggling through the cancer journey.”

Equally important is being comfortable with the Sales and Catering Manager or Event Planner. DO NOT be embarrassed to say, “that is out of my budget” and have a few alternative suggestions offered. I was on top of this and had everything nailed down 9 months early. All was perfect until the final details meeting. The venue Space is perfect for ambiance, food, and the overall tone for Austinʼs vision and not so perfect for speeches and privacy. How did I let this slip through the cracks? I am responsible for one task and I cannot fail. Super MOG takes over (after many many yoga breaths,) we discuss options. Options “always” mean extra funding and sticking to the budget is always the challenge.

Isnʼt this about that special bond that will never be broken between a mother and her son?

Feeling and looking younger will certainly make the dress perfect! Yes, gotta wait for the “Big Reveal.”

For those who want more of a surf and turf kind of experience, Hello Sailor does have a platter that might work for you – It is the No. 2 platter (there is a Number 1 but that one is all seafood) and it consists of Baby Back Pork Ribs and Carolina Calabash Shrimp served with two sides. What we chose were the Whole Flounder and the King Crab Broiled with Ghee and Chili Salt for me.

A sweet Mother’s Day breakfast

OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS: • 1 loaf French Bread torn into 1 inch pieces, about 5 cups • 5 Eggs • 1 cup Milk • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract • 2/3 cup Brown Sugar • 1 tsp. Cinnamon • Dash of Nutmeg • Fresh Berries & Syrup, for topping • Powdered Sugar, for topping (optional) • Syrup, for topping (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1.

Prepare a large, greased baking dish.

2. Tear the French Bread into small pieces. Note: This recipe goes from a 9 to a glorious 10 when you let the bread sit out for a few days to get crusty. If you don’t have a few days, pop it in a 350F oven for 10 minutes so it develops a nice crunch on the exterior.

Then let cool and pull apart into pieces.

3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the Eggs, Milk, and Vanilla Extract.

4. In a small mixing bowl, stir together the Brown Sugar, Cinnamon and dash of Nutmeg.

5. On the bottom of the greased baking dish, sprinkle half of the Brown Sugar mixture. (this creates a gooey, awesome crust on the bottom).

7. Pour over the Milk mixture and cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

10. As the French Toast is baking, wash the fresh fruit and set in a serving bowl.

11. Uncover, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until browned.

12. Serve immediately with fresh fruit, powdered sugar and syrup.

Brides are coming to know that an appointment with Emily Kotarski is the first, very important step in making their wedding dress visions a reality. She is proud that brides are discovering her talents. “I’ve had brides come to see me from locally in Charleston to as far away as Houston, Texas. “Her dedication to personalization and individuality for each bride is impeccable and the word is spreading fast.

Talented and flexible, Emily can accommodate the unpredictable as well. She shares, “I try to schedule my appointments within a reasonable timeframe to allow for production timing and spacing, but I’ve had situations where a bride was in town for only 24 hours and desperately wanted to meet me for a custom dress- we found a way to work it out and make it happen.

I was able to get her in at 5 PM and we worked through a 1 ½ hour appointment.”

For example, she was able to make contacts for the best factory operations such as the one she favors in Atlanta. As well, she was able to discover sources for her embellishments and materials such as silks and satins used in her dress de-signs. Her embellishments are sourced from Israel, France and Italy. She proudly explains, “I only use 100% silk; some others may say ‘silk’ but they are actually using a blended polyester type material.”

Emily’s interest in fashion and wedding dresses started with her schooling in New York. she studied at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York City. Emily had the opportunity to hone in on her passion for creating one of a kind articles of clothing. As well, the studio includes the actual work room where actual work pieces are laid out and worked on for custom-ers.

Emily’s work is as unique as the brides themselves. She creates a dress to fit with whatever genre the bride has planned for her special day. There are no confines or limits to the possibili-ties. When asked about some of the different styles she has created, Emily shares, “I’ve done many eclectic requests such as a bride who was eloping and

Typically, Emily uses a ‘mock up’ of the dress in muslin to get the basic style and shape tailored. She has various pieces and samples within the show room to use as demos. You may mix or match different skirts with varying style tops or bodices to give complete artistic freedom. There can be several fittings be-fore the final style is sent to the factory to be created in the actual silk, satin or other chosen ma-terial. Emily describes a unique dress within her Precious Metals collection, “The dress is a blue “Jade”, a deep color, that is a showstopper, a beauty… it’s very popular and has been order in silver as well as white.” Emily’s third collection, Dreams, was inspired by the 1970’s rock and roll culture. “I named it after the Fleetwood Mac song, “Dreams”, and it is edgy with more volume in the sleeves and various details beyond that in Precious Metals.

He had control of the race and won by an astounding 31 lengths! Secretariat is still to this day the greatest horse that ever lived.

• The week before the Belmont, Secretariat was featured on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.

• In 1974 Secretariat was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, receiving many honors and distinctions.

• When Secretariat passed a necropsy was performed in 1989 finding he had a heart weighing approximately 22 pounds. This is twice the size of an average horse.

he Players Championship held at the TPC Sawgrass is the first and most unique course to be built with the spectators and fans in mind. It is a unique lifestyle experience. Designed by the

With this in mind key locations were designed around the 1st, 10th, 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th greens. These features would include large sloping mounds up to 30 feet high so for the first time thousands of fans would have unobstructed views of the player.

Today that swampland is breathtaking. And what an experience it is. It is the place to see and be seen. It has evolved into a fabulous event for the whole family. There are mixologists on sight creating unique and exotic libations. There are celebrity Chef’s on hand for the epicurean.

There is wine, beer and even a tailor on sight.
