When I think of summer I think of a time where we’re all a little bit more free and I love how India Hicks, (who happened to be a flower girl in another royal wedding ……Prince Charles to Lady Diana) exemplifies this with ease. How she manages her work and home in a seamless fashion. We all have our favorite beliefs, mantras, words we live by. You might guess that based on the name of this article, mine are Trust Life Today. And although I do love everything those words mean to me, my FAVORITE belief is probably the one that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve felt and known since I was a little girl. This one:

Sounds simple, it may even sound corny. Yet still, it sums it ALL up for me. This is one of those rare things that I feel in my bones. Because of my deep belief in, and resonance with these words, the following quote by Marilyn Monroe caught my eye: Marilyn Monroe Everything Happens For a Reason.

I like this a lot. After the first line, needless to say, I was hooked. Followed by the words “let go,” which make up one half of Trust Life Today’s slogan (Let go…Trust Life.)—another score. Yes, I even like the bit about believing lies so eventually you’ll trust no one…but yourself. I think the placement of the words, specifically where the line ends, was clever (and deliberate) on the part of whoever created this word art. The way the words are positioned on the line, the reader is led to believe that the point of that particular segment is to trust no one, when really, you read on and see the actual point is to Trust Yourself. There is a Taoist story I wrote about to illustrate the ideas of:

One recent client was advised, both by a realtor and her previous designer, to paint her walls grey—when grey clearly did not work with her home. Had she not trusted her gut, she would have made a very costly mistake because as you know, paint is expensive! She subsequently hired me for a paint consultation, and we determined what DID work—creamy whites and pale, green-undertone beiges. When selling your home, the goal is to depersonalize. We’ve all heard the obvious tips, but in case you need a refresher, do pack away those family photos, declutter, and neutralize. Think easy on the eyes but generic enough to appeal to many buyers. Even though paint seems to be an easy fix, many potential buyers can’t see past minor, cosmetic issues. If you have screaming-red walls or espresso-brown everything, buyers may feel deflated and ignore your home’s beautiful architecture or stunning landscaping. Here is where you should pay attention because sellers and home buyers get a lot of bad advice about choosing the right paint color. If there is one piece of advice I’d like to share it is:

HERE IS ANOTHER TIP While sellers should stick with neutral colors, buyers should incorporate color. Homeowners should also seek to personalize their homes. I have a wonderful client who travels the world with her husband. She has an extensive art collection and unique finds from countries all over the world. While a home seller would need to scale down and pack away goodies such as these, we sought to highlight and compliment her collection, in part, by using wall color. Although neutral, monochromatic palettes work well for selling, they can be a bore to live with. Today’s greige-neutral paints work beautifully as a backdrop for fresh color if they coordinate with your hard finishes (again, meaning countertops, cabinetry, flooring, and tile). Whether through furnishings, accessories, or wall color, don’t be afraid to add a little personality to your home! Remember that if you decorate all in shades of grey, you

Paula Newsome is more than a “triple threat.” She flawlessly juggles acting, writing, traveling, volunteering, and having a love life. Lately, the public is raving about HBO’s new series “Barry” in which Newsome plays the fierce role of Detective Janice Moss. This dark comedy was produced by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, who stars as the hitman-turned-actor Barry. Newsome notes, “I appreciate that Alec and Bill wrote a woman in 3D.” They interviewed a high ranking female police detective in Los Angeles and she became the inspiration for Janice’s role. Then they hired a variety of female writers to gain knowledge and insight on how a woman should be portrayed. Her character is dynamic as she is able to show her sense of humor, resilience, and vulnerability. Newsome adds, “She’s a woman who can take you out in the alley with a cold piece of steel, but also a woman who has a tender heart when someone unexpected opens up to her.” This someone is Barry’s brutally honest yet quirky acting professor Gene Cousineau (Harry Winkler). locally-sourced cuisine. Tucked away in Charlotte’s historic Forth Ward, the McNinch House concentrates on

During our menu tasting, we discussed the likelihood of an herb-focused mixed greens making an appearance this summer. Shepard plans to elevated this salad with creamy burrata that’s dressed in a basil or bacon vinaigrette. As a special treat, we were invited to participate in one this year’s summer menu testing days. The featured recipe was a light tortellini arrangement with pan-torched heirloom tomatoes, house-made pesto and locally-sourced micro greens. This dish was then paired with a citrus-forward Sauvignon Blanc that aligned itself perfectly with the herbal notes of the pesto. The McNinch House will perform several assessments before making a final decision on their summer menu, though, we have high hopes that this entrée makes the cut. We also partook in a 6-course tasting from their current spring line-up. The menu narratives are listed below to get your taste buds in the mood. All pairings were selected by wine expert, Anthony “Wes” Wesley, who has been assisting guests at the McNinch House Restaurant for 16 years. Shepard, a Johnson & Whales trained culinary expert, recently celebrated his third year with the McNinch House. Growing up in North Carolina, his family escaped to an intimate retreat at Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee every summer. He recalls the entire household gathering into one cozy space; no cell phones, no television, no internet… just family bonding at it’s finest. A couple of his memoirs include waking up to patio breakfasts overlooking the mountains and competitive games of UNO. However, the most predominant are the smells of freshly cut grass and hay. “Working with our vegetation allows me to reminisce about my childhood adventures spent outdoors and among wildlife. When I design our menus, it’s my ultimate goal to give guests the taste of that particular season and awaken memories of their own”, expressed Shepard.

This conventional family farm grows an assortment of produce including Tomatoes, Cabbage, Potatoes, Squash, and Corn. Cassandra is a 5th generation farmer, descending from a family that primarily grows Christmas Trees. During our visit, we had the opportunity to gather our own produce from her fields. Our pick? Cherry tomatoes. These sun-ripened fruits are ready to be picked 65-70 days after planting; they are available year-round with a peak season in the summer months. Cherry Tomatoes are generally sweeter than the larger variety, bursting with flavor and versatility. Brighten your dinner plans with my Caprese Chicken over Greens and Beans.

My go-to Chopped Caprese Salad: INGREDIENTS: • 1 small container of Cherry Tomatoes (about 1.5 cups), chopped in half • 6-8 Basil Leaves (about 1/4 cup), chopped • 1 clove Garlic, minced • 8 ounces Whole Milk Mozzarella, chopped into bite sized pieces • 1/2 cup Balsamic Vinegar • 1 tbsp. Olive Oil (I love using Greek Olive Oil in this recipe) • S + P, to taste

Grilled Chicken: • 2 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts • 1 tbsp. Blackening Seasoning

Sautéed Spinach & White Beans

• 1 large bunch of Fresh Spinach (about 10 cups) • 1 (15-ounce) can Cannellini Beans, rinsed & drained • 3-4 Tbsp. Olive Oil, for sautéing • 2 cloves Garlic, minced • S + P, to taste • 1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes, optional • 1/4 cup Breadcrumbs or Crushed Crackers (we used Club Crackers) • 1 tbsp. Butter

DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare Caprese Salad: Chop all Vegetables and Mozzarella and place in a large mixing bowl. Gently toss with Balsamic Vinegar, Olive Oil and Salt + Pepper. Set aside until you’re ready to plate. 2. Season the Chicken with desired seasonings: I like to use Blackening Seasoning but you can use whatever seasoning you prefer. Grill on medium-high for about 7 minutes on each side, or until internal temperature reaches 165F and juices run clear. 3. While the Chicken is grilling, prepare the sautéed Greens: Heat Olive Oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add Garlic and Crushed Red Pepper. Sauté for 1 minute before adding the Spinach. In large

handfuls, add Spinach in batches and mix constantly until wilted (about 10 minutes). Psst…Don’t forget to flip your Chicken while cooking this! 4. Rinse and drain the Cannellini Beans and add to the skillet: Continue to cook for another 4-5 minutes, or until beans are heated through. 5. In a separate pan, melt the Butter and add Crushed Crackers: Sauté until the Crackers are golden, about 4 minutes. 6. Assemble the plates: First lay down a bed of Spinach & Beans and sprinkle with crispy Crushed Crackers. Next add the Grilled Chicken Breast and top with Caprese Salad. Tryon is an easy driving distance to Charlotte and Asheville, as well as Spartanburg and Greenville, SC. Administered by the Fédération Equestre Internationale, the Swiss-based worldwide governing body of equestrian sport, the Games will take place over 14 days, and it is the major international championship event for the eight core equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage and para-equestrian dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining. The WEG is held every four years, halfway between the Summer Olympic Games cycle. Equestrian enthusiasts from over 70 countries travel to WEG host cities every four years to cheer on international athletes from their native countries. The event has been held in an impressive list of major international cities, including: Stockholm, Sweden (1990); The Hague, Netherlands (1994); Rome, Italy (1998); Jerez de la Frontera, Spain (2002); Aachen, Germany (2006); Lexington, Kentucky (2010); and Normandy, France (2014). I said earlier I was fighting demons out there because when you’re not hitting it good, it just feels like the life is getting sucked out of you. Just feel like you don’t have ——the confidence is starting to dwindle, but you know that you’ve just got to keep pushing. I know that I can fight and keep pushing regardless of how bad things are going. So that’s the biggest thing that I know is that my mental strength out there is actually quite strong. It’s not up to the level of like a Tiger or anything like that, but just being able to keep myself around. Somehow getting it done when things aren’t going great, because anyone can win hitting 15 greens and having six birdies and no bogeys and playing great, but the moments where you win and you don’t have your greatest stuff is the moment you learn the most.”
