lthough it doesn’t quite feel like spring as we press print on our March/April issue, we at Luxe Lifestyle magazine are ever optimists and look forward to a new season. With each issue the magazine seems to become more and more exciting to put together. We are so lucky to meet and work with so many wonderful people. Allison Parker spoke with Jason Harris of the Design Network. We get a glimpse inside his extraordinary vision for the interior design business and what he has created for the future platform. We are able to share Mia Malcom (Marissa Frandsen) the award winning interior designer, furniture designer and fine artist. Her artwork just takes us to a place of all things beautiful. On the subject of beauty, Cameron Silver spoke exclusively to Brianna Melanson on his take on fashion and his book Decades: A Century of Fashion, which has already become a classic coffee table book. You can also find inspiration on our department pages, from travel to food, to health and beauty and our new Inspire page. Thanks to Leslie Green for teaching us how to live in our truth. Here’s to a season of inspiration and new growth...

In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs readers to embrace minimalism. Modern Dating Manners Millennials to Married Couples

is the season of love. Dating apps, internet presence, and evolving gender norms are challenging traditional rules of dating, making modern courtship complex and confusing for some. Today, age and career don’t necessarily dictate whether there’s a match. In 2018, consider two sets of paramount dating guidelines--three for Millennials, and three for married couples.

Life helps us to learn, to grow, to blossom, to soar—to know yourself, to know your needs, and to love and trust yourself enough to make the right choices for you. As simple as it may sound, stop for just a moment and ask yourself: 1. Do I know myself? Not in a yes-no answer sense, but do you truly know who you are? Who are you? Not your labels (mother, teacher, nurse, coach, singer, gardener), but who you are beyond your labels? 2. Do I know my needs? Beyond food, shelter, and other basic needs, what are your heart’s-desire-needs? What are the needs that extend past your body, the ones that feed your spirit? 3. Lastly, ask yourself, do I love myself? Again, not in a yes-no response, but rather ask yourself to describe what loving yourself looks like. And also what loving yourself does not look like. South is certainly the bosom of hospitality. The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island is a resort

perfectly named. Tucked away neatly in a coastal forest, the property welcomes guests with southern charm that warms the heart like a favorite blanket! Kiawah Island, South Carolina is an exclusive golf and tennis community, and The Sanctuary Resort rests safely beyond a secure sentry gate where property owners and resort guests are checked through after a picturesque forty-minute drive from Charleston. The gate is the only access to the island, so security and privacy are absolutely guaranteed. Visiting The Sanctuary for a long weekend proves to be a treat. The stately Southern Plantation is true to its heritage down to every minute detail.

Exclusive Atmosphere‌ After passing the gate, the car meanders through a forest primeval of trees on a manicured country road. A tiny sign informs where to turn, and the forest opens to reveal a plantation style resort with colonial columns waiting like a faithful friend. The neatly trimmed grounds and floral walking gardens create a sense of welcome tranquility. Smiling families wheel by on rented bicycles‌ no doubt heading nowhere, laughing and chirping in conversation.

Epicurean Delights… While exclusive atmosphere and elite amenities are The Sanctuary’s claim to fame, “low country” dining at the resort’s Jasmine Porch is an experience to satisfy a workman’s appetite in gentleman, lady, and child alike. The brunch buffet is a parade of flavors and styles that lives up to its name. It is difficult to describe such a smorgasbord with the finesse it deserves. To the simple and gourmand alike, it is a Comfort Food Oasis where oysters on the half shell and peeled shrimp somehow rub elbows with mashed potatoes, country stuffing, and green bean casserole. Minnie Pearl and Julia Child would both be jealous! There is even a side table with such small-diner favorites as chicken fingers, mac n’ cheese, and — yes — even a row of PB&J ensuring parents of a home run with more particular palates. The name was changed to “Savor, a Celebration of Food & Drink” to more accurately reflect the beverage variety available as well as a renewed focus on the culinary component.” Beginning on Thursday, May 3rd the festival kicks off with an array of seminars around town formulated in conjunction with Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. Thursday evening is the official opening of the celebration with “TASTE!”, which is a culinary compilation showcasing many of the Blowing Rock and High Country restaurants. In attendance will be AppState chancellor Sheri Everts, Football Coach Satterfield, an alumni chef, and many student athletes.

SAVOR BLOWING ROCK by Lynne Lear

When spring blooms in the High Country the charming mountain town of Blowing Rock comes alive with a celebration of food and ferments. SAVOR Blowing Rock, now in its twelfth year, is a festival devoted to culinary delights, wines from North Carolina and around the world, craft beers and locally distilled spirits. Originally named The Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival, it was envisioned in 2006 by renowned artist Bob Timberlake and Chetola Resort owner Kent Tarbutton, based entirely on wine and food and being one of the first festivals of its kind in the state. As North Carolina craft beers emerged as a powerhouse beverage and the NC Department of Agriculture named April “Craft Beer Month”, they were integrated into the festival. Charles Hardin, President and CEO of the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce notes, “In 2016, distilled spirits were added to the experience and the focus was broadened from an exclusively wine and beer focused

One dinner of note will be held at Rowland’s at Westglow Resort & Spa with special guest Trent Moffet, a very talented and personable winemaker from Napa and Oregon.

Saturday burgeons with activities beginning with The Globe Gravel Challenge bicycle race and Chetola Resort’s Corkscrew and Brew 5K. The afternoon brings The Culinary Village in the main tent and the Reserve VIP wine tasting in the reserve tent. As if that weren’t enough, the afternoon will also hold the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show’s Derby Party which will feature a Kentucky Derby theme married with Cinco de Mayo. Sunday closes the festival with one final event – Jazz and Bubbles at The Inn at Crestwood Resort & Spa. For those who have never attended this festival, it will be a terrific new experience in the village of Blowing Rock. For those who have attended in the past, this years’ experience will be the best ever! Many over-the-counter medications contain “inactive ingredients” that I wouldn’t normally put into my body – and most definitely don’t want to subject my body to when I’m trying to recover from something. I personally like to heal my body naturally with treatments like acupuncture and some herbal remedies whenever possible. Some people think it’s crazy… but herbs and spices have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic (a medical system that originated in India) and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help a number of conditions. These natural remedies go way back in our history and have been used for a very long time to support good health.

I successfully healed myself naturally in the past… Several years ago, I had a bad fall and injured my tailbone. When I fell, all the nerves surrounding my spine and lower back felt like they were on FIRE! I was traveling for work at the time, and had to be pumped full of painkillers just to get on the plane back home. I was bedridden for 3 weeks and miserable. And to top it off, my doctor said I only had one option for relief – surgery to remove my tailbone. Hearing his prognosis was devastating to me, because it meant that I

anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric in my regular diet. I like to juice turmeric – and really love to drink turmeric shots! I sometimes make turmeric lattes and cook vegetables with turmeric. And, I also like to take a daily organic turmeric supplement. That’s the easiest way to know I’m getting my turmeric in every day. I can travel with it, keep it in my purse, and never forget to take it. Turmeric’s beneficial properties have been the subject of thousands of peer-reviewed and published studies. Turmeric is full of nutrients and antioxidants, which are ingredients in food that fight excess free radicals in the body that can damage cells and diminish health*. When I consume turmeric regularly, I feel better over-all. Most recently, I began suffering from intense pain in my thumb and wrist, which many new mamas get from picking up their babies (which is why it’s called “Mommy Thumb”). In addition to acupuncture treatments and wrapping it, turmeric has helped with the inflammation*.

cosmetic lines. Aerin Lauder, the granddaughter of EstÊe Lauder, worked for the family business until 2012 when she introduced her own beauty and home interiors line. Her love for interiors came from her passion for being at home with her family. Jonathan Adler, a well-known interiors designer, recently crossed over into the cosmetics world designing a limited edition collection for Clinique. The collection was based on his favorite places to vacation; those places included Capri, Santorini, and Palm Beach. This spring color is going to be bold and bright with lots of metallic. With ultra violet being the pantone color of the year do not be afraid to step out of the box and play with color. The use of the color can be subtle, try using Violet eyeliner from Laura Marcier to add a little color to your eye look. We cannot forget our skin care! My new favorite can’t live without serum is the new EstÊe Lauder Perfectionist Pro. It does everything, my skin instantly looked brighter, with smaller pores and within 2 weeks I noticed a difference in my skin tone. This is a must add to your skin care routine. *Disclaimer- I am not sponsored by a cosmetic company

ARTIST AND DESIGNER MARISSA FRANDSEN By Allison Parker

W

himsy is a word that comes to mind when thinking of my meeting with Marissa 'Mia' Frandsen, founder of Mia Malcolm Studio. An established designer of home

interiors and furniture as well as a creator of fine art canvas paintings, she is unencumbered with traditional decorating genres. She focuses on first making a relationship with the heart of a person when meeting them. She feels that working with anyone as their designer is a special relationship. “ It is about them, not me, their dreams, their day to day like a friendship or a marriage.” Getting to the soul of a relationship is where Mia sees a free range of possibilities of design that will encompass everything that her meeting with client inspires. Having grown up in California with a father who was a contractor and a mother who was a designer, Mia felt an innate sense of craftmanship. She remembers creating her own items was so fulfilling as a child in a time when so many people were so brand focused. She shares “I feel it is amazing to see a change from wanting cookie cutter brand items to a want for more individualized tasteful pieces.” Having this sense of ownership to creating projects and art, Mia worked first painting murals. As a young, newly married mom, Mia had a secondary need to share her creativity. She had a small child who Top & bottom photo Mia Malcom art, interior designer Traci Zeller and Brooke Cole, Photography Dustin Peck, Arcadia Homes Middle photo High Fashion Home. photography Julie Soefer , Mia Malcom art, interior designer Traci Zeller and Brooke Cole , Photography Dustin Peck, Arcadia Homes

able to provide the necessities to keep her young child healthy and overcome the illness. Presently, her son is thriving and so is her creativity. Mia proudly and almost tearfully shares “I’m not one to be negative or hide in a corner. I’m going to fight to make things work out, and I will not give up or give in to any negative situation.” Her continuing movement forward with her art led her to a chance meeting with a vendor who recommended she help with a mural project for a larger home. It turned out the owner of the home was the now late Ron Simek also the founder/owner of Tombstone Pizza! As a young, budding artist, this amazing referral resulted in her first major contract for $70,000!! From then, her work flourished as she worked with such famous clients as one of the owners (shared ownership) of the Phoenix Suns as well as the producer of Happy Gilmore among others. Mia has also had her moment in the spotlight as a TV host for The Design Network show titled UpCycled. She loved having the opportunity to host a show and loves the theme and inspiration of The Design Network. Being exposed to so many different outlets as a designer, Mia shares “So many designers are taught or feel they need to know their specific mark. I want to be that designer who doesn’t want to have a uniform mark, but rather work individually to create a unique “mark” with each client. People bring me their dreams, ideas, folly in bits and pieces from magazine tear outs, fabric swatches, etc. I feel I can

A serendipity with the universe as well as thoughtful prayer led Mia and family to North Carolina. Having visited the manufacturing plant where her sketched up furniture designs where being bench made for her California clients, it was clear to Mia that her family could transition and make it home. Mia recollects “I grew up playing in the backyard, having fun with nature not having a TV. So the chance to be back to basics is an opportunity to utilize the playful outdoor spirit that is untapped and uninhibited in creative pursuit.” The family’s journey to North Carolina resulted in a canvas painting series called ‘Rivers and Roads’. ing woman, that story inspired me, she was fearless in her pursuit that catered to dresses for working women.” How intriguing to learn this about an ancestor and how design sense can transcend the generations. She recalls “As a child, my room was decorated in cabbage roses and stripes on everything -curtains, bedspreads, carpets. The bloom is a symbol to me to GROW to LIVE and always be moving forward. This is the inspiration for the bloom series. “ The Bloom series is carried by three art galleries as well as Mia has pieces available at Ballard and Neiman Marcus. Her work showing at Highpoint Market allowed exposure for these works and discovery for her customers to find them in local vendors. Her background with construction and design in the family allows her to utilize hardy, quality woods and metals yet offer rounded edges and softer colors and fabrics. The result is a timeless piece of quintessential beauty and function with her Heirloom line. Mia’s neverending creativity is a bloom in process. It is going to be a beautiful vision to watch as she unveils new and exciting projects to enchant the art world as well as in her own words “to be a servant and a vessel for her customer’s vision.”

he trend of filling an entire wall with framed pictures, much like what you would see in an art gallery or museum, either in rows or asymmetrical, continues to be sought after in deco-

rating a modern home. Julianne Taylor, Creative Director of Taylor Burke Home, thought, “What if we turned that idea into a wallpaper?” After the success of Julianne’s Shanghai wallpaper designs for Mitchell Black, she was invited back to design a second: the Kensington Collection. pub somewhere in Ireland. People say that they’re using Kensington for a men’s locker room in this resort or a boy’s room, etc.” It is a very strong, masculine print and different from what Julianne typically designs. Behind the frames are dark plaid fabric backgrounds, acting as what would be the wallpaper where the frames were hung. Plaid has recently become part of everyday fashion from capes to flats reminiscent of historic kilts and equestrian style. Julianne explains, “When you see plaid attire and riding boots, you see traditional. And these design elements in fashion always translate into home decor.” Each plaid pattern is available in three carefully chosen colorways; there are many deep navies, greens, reds, and grays. Julianne notes that we will be seeing more daring color combinations in the interior marketplace this year. Meanwhile, the photos and background are one 2-dimensional image where you don’t even need to find decor to hang up. The wallpaper is the room’s art and completes the environment. It is especially great if you want a gallery wall, but want to save money, are struggling to find matching pieces or don’t feel like hanging up and figuring out how to organize a bunch of pictures. These peel and stick wallpapers are simple to install and remove if you want to switch things up or start a new trend

H

ere are a few highlights of the 4th annual Verse & Vino, held in Charlotte at the Charlotte Convention Center to benefit the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Nearly 1,200 book lovers enjoyed dinner, wine, book signings and truly inspiring remarks by New York

Times best-selling authors Kate White, Jamie Ford, Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Nikki Giovanni and Wiley Cash. The authors spoke about libraries and their books, and this year a recurring theme of transitions emerged – some sudden, some planned, some natural, and others we work toward and hope to see. Verse & Vino raised over $275,000 for the Library Foundation, this was made possible through the generosity of presenting sponsor PNC Bank and additional corporate, foundation and individual sponsors. It was a fabulous evening.

With heart disease, diabetes, and stroke accounting for 1 in 3 deaths in the United States, and access to care being a top health issue in Charlotte, Heart-

Bright saw a critical need to bridge the healthcare gaps for the working poor sector of our community. HeartBright provides treatment, education and access programs for their patients that have no other way to access healthcare, as well as early prevention of these issues in our youth. With the ability to have a comprehensive wellness plan that they can use to manage their disease. Patients are able to improve their health, have hope for their future, and be inspired to live healthy and productive lives in our community. n order to fully comprehend today’s fashion, one must understand and study fashion’s history. As Cameron Silver says, “You can’t be modern until you know your vintage.” That is the argument in Silver’s book Decades: A Century of Fashion which has already become a classic coffee table

book and required read since its release in 2012. Silver has built his name through his own boutique Decades in Los Angeles and as Fashion Director at H Halston at Dillards and the QVC exclusive brand H by Halston. As you can imagine, the writing of Cameron Silver’s intelligent and beautiful book was a challenge. He states, “Several years went into the writing of the book and the research of the photography. My publisher wanted to create a perennial, which is why this book is going into its third printing.” Each chapter is a different decade of the 20th Century that discusses the historic relevance and fashion icons, and showcases the modern aspects of the time. For instance the 1920s chapter jumps into Coco Chanel and the 1960s chapter will comment on the Space Age. Cameron claims his aesthetic is characteristic of the 1970s. All of the essays are thought provoking and include intriguing contributions from or interviews with celebrities, fashion editors and famous designers. Not to mention the stunning photography and iconic fashion pieces that Camer-

Fashion Director of the Halston brands, Cameron is a fan of their essentials line, especially the T-shirts which are comfortable stand-alone pieces that can be worn often. Cameron says, “Halston created an everlasting, elegant way of dressing which is what we’re continuing to do at a more affordable price point. It’s contemporary, it doesn’t look retro, but we’re not doing things that you’re over with already.” However, Silver says we are also in a “liberated” fashion era where it is now acceptable to wear day fabrics at night and vice versa. Cameron personally likes that fashion is becoming seasonless. It’s okay to wear bright colors in the gloomy winter or whenever you feel like it. Cameron stresses the significance of color. Add a pop of color in your shoes if you’re wearing all black. If you are to buy anything vintage, let it be a scarf which can instantly turn a plain outfit fabulous. Every woman can rock a scarf and there is no specific season to wear them. This spring’s fashion, should still be wearable next spring and springs to come. At Cameron’s recent Decades book signing at Capitol in Charlotte, he sold a woman a Scaasi strapless blue sequin dress she look phenomenal in. She had no where in particular to wear it to, but when you find something that looks and feels great, buy it and find a place for it later. While he has had many memorable red carpet gowns for celebrities, he adores being able to help real women find red carpet worthy pieces. He was extremely with

We

appreciate this compliment from the “king of vintage.” Perhaps we are a step ahead in understanding that the history of fashion is our guide to modern fashion. Cameron will not be writing another coffee table book for awhile, but he has other writing projects in mind that we can get excited about.

The grilled octopus had just the right amount of flavor, with the grilling process adding just a little bit of smokiness to the flavor. Sometimes octopus and squid turns out being too chewy and a little tough, but not in this case. The texture and resistance to the bite were perfect. We added a quick order of the General Tso’s Roasted Cauliflower and to quote the great movie Office Space, it was everything we ever thought it could be. The Kimpton has done a truly magnificent job of creating an environmake me even hungrier so I decided to commit and order the Double Pimento Cheeseburger. Not only was the burger good, it was steakhouse-style burger good with the generous helping of pimento cheese slathered on and between the two patties giving it a decidedly rich Southern flavor most regular sliced-cheese burgers lack. My companion decided to keep with her penchant of ordering and testing the small bites, so the next thing she ordered were the Pork Belly Lettuce Wraps followed by the Blue Crab Rolls. Both were amazing, according to both of us (I tried one of each)! The sauce used on the tender pork bellies definitely made them a cut above while the blue crab rolls had some of the most succulent crab I have tasted in quite a while. Perfectly sated, and choosing to concentrate on bevvies for awhile, we were able to do some expert people-watching. It seemed like everyone from the after-work partier office-types in their black slacks and button-downs to the formally-dressed men and women to the fancy-jeans-andnice-shirt types were absolutely loving the place! The beer selection is great, there are wide-variety of spirits offered (nothing too obscure but a nice selection nonetheless) and there is a great mixed drink menu with some innovative yet still classically accessible choices perfect for an evening out.
