His research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.”

lights that brighten the home. A season of giving, Dan Jansen has made it one of his life purposes. He understands what it is to give all of oneself to a sport and then to others, creating the Dan Jansen Foundation. Read his amazing story on page 62. Heart of an Angel on the Wings of an Artist, Anne Neilson shares with us how through her passion she has been able to give so much and touch so many (pg 68). Bon-Vivant, host extraordinaire, Alex Hitz shows us how to throw a party. Having been adorned as the “very best host in the world” by the Wall Street Journal, this southerner can teach us a thing or two in his new book The Art of the Host (pg 74). Our manners and etiquette connoisseur has some fabulous advice for us on seating for that holiday soiree. Just as we start to wanderlust, Venice makes the perfect holiday destination, or perhaps we want to dip our toes in the sand and unwind in Amelia Island. Whether you are looking to start your Christmas shopping (head to page 53) or send your list to father Christmas, we hope to share some inspiration. OLIVE, AGAIN BY ELIZABETH STROUT

Prickly, wry, resistant to change yet ruthlessly honest and deeply empathetic, Olive Kitteridge is “a compelling life force” (San Francisco Chronicle). The New Yorker has said that Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force,” and she has never done so more clearly than in these pages, where the iconic Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine. Whether with a teenager coming to terms with the loss of her father, a young woman about to give birth during a hilariously inopportune moment, a nurse who confesses a secret high school crush, or a lawyer who struggles with an inheritance she does not want to accept, the unforgettable Olive will continue to startle us, to move us, and to inspire moments of transcendent grace. START WITH SETTING NAME CARDS:

Consider setting your table with creative name cards. Children and teens love to make these keepsakes and they are excellent conversation starters. The kiddos are proud they contributed

TEENAGER:

Encourage teens to join the conversation by seating them in between adults; not next to each other. This provides an opportunity for them to engage with others and learn conversation skills. They can sit with their phones and cousins after dinner.

and can lead the adults to their seats preventing awkward guesswork when it’s time to sit down. Remember, it’s about an enthusiastic dialogue.

FOOD SCRUTINIZER:

Guests who love to cook, collect recipes, or examine each bite are seated near kitchen helpers or the introvert who will listen.

HOSTESS NEAR THE KITCHEN:

Sit at the end of the table, closest to the kitchen. Your co-host

sits at the other end to keep the conversation flowing and pour drinks. Global guests help keep conversations moving by contributing intriguing stories about culture, customs, and travel.

SEPARATE MARRIED & LONGTIME COUPLES:

SOCIALLY SAVVY:

It’s a blessing to be able to seat this guest near a difficult, negative or Prima Donna. They will draw out the introvert too. Count on them to segue the conversation when necessary and ask interculturally competent questions.

Married and longtime couples have time-tested stories that others enjoy hearing. Seating them together Isn’t any fun. They will interrupt each other’s telling of their go-to stories. Seat them at opposite table ends.

INTROVERT:

Hosts adore having an introvert or two at the table. They tend to be mild-mannered and prefer to make eye contact with the turkey. Seat a quiet person next to a socially savvy, prima don-

GOSSIPER:

In some cultures, discussing politics, salary, and family planpolitics, sex, and religion are avoided when seeking a peaceful feast. If one of your guests is a pundit, rein him in or he’ll veer toward dangerous territory. Seat pundits close by so you can segue to a new topic if necessary.

NEGATIVE GUEST:

For this guest, the wine isn’t the best vintage and the rolls aren’t hot enough. That difficult guest is seated by your brilliant cohost or by you so you can segue to positive thoughts and people. Lighten the food with pet stories, or vacation bloopers. Keep that energy positive!

PRIMA DONNA:

Seat an attention-seeking guest at the end of the table so he can’t dominate dinner conversation. Sit nearby so you may change the conversation if needed. He’s fascinating but keep a handle on him. Seat the prima donna next to an introvert, who listens.

logue without seeking attention.

Guests known to engage in rumormongering can be seated beside socially savvy, an introvert, or a quiet guest without loud opinions.

PLUS ONE:

Seat them next to their date. Another option is seating them next to an introvert, a socially savvy or a prima donna. If you haven’t met the new plus one, consider discreetly adjusting the seating chart after the introduction; but before everyone sits down.

STORYTELLER

Hosts seek out this dinner guest with superior storytelling skills about Antarctica travel, adventurous zipline vacations, or intriguing Embassy work. Seat them near the table center where everyone can hear their responses when you ask questions since they won’t raise the topic themselves. Have the dessert tray ready because the conversation makes for an enjoyable evening.

NOT ALL COLLAGEN IS CREATED EQUAL By Joy Harari, Joy Harari, Certified Health Coach, GAPS and Psychology of Eating Specialist and Founder of Shore Magic

T

he buzz around town is about collagen these days, and people are praising every little peptide for the countless number of benefits they provide for the mind, body and soul. As they should. Our bodies are made up of collagen and as we get older, our collagen production slows causing signs of aging from the inside and out. We also don’t get enough collagen in our diets anymore. That’s

why more and more people are finding a way to incorporate it into their daily routine to prevent or reverse the effects collagen loss can cause. But, it’s important to know that not all collagens are created equal, and there are a number of things to consider when choosing which kind of collagen product is right for you.

26

Volume 3, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Purity A scientific study was recently published featuring Shore Magic marine collagen that proved the purity and molecular weight of a collagen peptide affects its absorption into the body. Some in market brands boast additional vitamins, herbs or flavors with their collagen. While that may seem like you’re getting more “beauty for your buck”, when it comes to collagen… less is more. Collagen sold with other ingredients can result in a need to buy and consume more for the same effect as a pure peptide. While it may seem like adding more vitamins makes it more powerful, just as all collagens aren’t created equal, neither are people’s chemical makeup. The additional ingredients added to the collagen could have an adverse effect on your system and cause complications. Keep it simple and pure. Powders, Pills and Products Collagen comes in many forms and you can walk into any store to find a number of over the counter collagen products. While collagen pills, gummies and capsules can still be effective for incorporating collagen into your diet, a tested, pure, low weight marine collagen powder still prevails. It can be added to anything from coffee and yogurt to oatmeal and muffins. As stated above, the purer and smaller the peptide, the quicker it absorbs and gets to work. If you’re not really ready to start scooping collagen but want the

Many marine collagens on the market are from farmed fish scales rather than wild fish skins. Farmed fish and cows are kept in crowded, unnatural conditions that often result in ingested toxins, the rapid spreading of disease and need for human fed antibiotics all that can be present in the collagen peptides being absorbed into your body. We sustainably source our marine collagen as a byproduct of the fish industry from wild fish skins, making it the purest starting point for your collagen. T

he holiday season is upon us! This festive time often means more time with family and friends as well as parties and celebrations that create connection and

fun. But this time of year, can also mean increased stress and food intake, adding to the many reasons why it’s an integral time to focus on your heart and physical health. The combination of family functions, shopping, travel and indulgent foods are the recipe for a perfect storm within the body. During this season, metabolisms often slow down, we get less sunlight and people lose motivation to get up, get out or go to the gym for exercise. It’s hard to imagine, but did you know every winter, about 100 people in the U.S. pass away shoveling snow? Not to mention, that the day after Thanksgiving is one of busiest days in the hospital. This is because people who aren’t taking care of their heart and bodies fall victim to something as simple as the intake of too much food. I share these facts with you, not to scare you, but instead to make sure you’re aware of the importance of handling stress and keeping a healthy heart over the holidays.

EXERCISE YOUR HEART The heart is a muscle. It’s different than your bicep, but it behaves very similar to your other muscles. When the heart is exercised, and beats faster, it gets stronger. Cardiovascular activity, as long as it’s kept at the appropriate and safe intensity for the person doing the exercise, causes lactic acid and carbon dioxide to be released through the breath. This allows more oxygen to come in, setting the stage for optimal conditions in the body…the release of toxins, the reduction of oxidative stress, an increase in both cellular energy and physical energy, improved mood, and much more!

When exercise reaches a certain intensity, the blood pressure starts to lower. This is because the body is expelling all the things that made it rise to begin with. The goal is to get your heart rate in a zone 60-80% of your calculated max training zone. The form of exercise can vary, from running to lifting heavy weights in a cardiovascular way. It all goes back to being in the proper heart rate zone. At Fitness Together, we use heart monitors so clients know, on an intensity scale of one to ten, exactly where they stand. We also utilize breath patterns as a gauge to tell where a person is at from a heartrate standpoint. The idea is to be slightly of breath but still able to speak. We utilize Genetic Direction testing so people know what workouts are most effective for their unique body. The Genetic Direction testing involves a mouth swab and provides a breakdown for each person surrounding what exercise and nutrition works best for them. For example, I have a low response to cardiovascular training for weight loss but high response for insulin sensitivity (blood sugar). So cardio, for me, helps lower my blood sugar but does not help as much when it comes to losing weight. Attitude of Gratitude and Giving to yourself is also good for your heart. Taking time for Self-care can make it easier to give to others. No one can pour from an empty cup. Making sure time is carved out to create energy thru consistent exercise makes all the difference between things being merry & bright vs. singing the holiday blues. Keeping an attitude of gratitude is key to seeing this commitment thru. Studies show that those who train their mind to default to being thankful experience more success in all areas of life and also report greater satisfaction in life. The natural tendency of the mind is to default to the negative, so consider committing to a gratitude journal now thru the end of the year. We recommend The 5 Minute Journal… Hardback and Paperback versions can be found on Amazon. There is also an App available to put the 5 Minute Journal into practice. Simply type in Five Minute Journal

the body shift from a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state to a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state. For people who are more prone to things like panic and anxiety, which are more prevalent this time of year, there is a mind and body shift when someone works out and experiences connection to deeper breathing and focused physical movement. Best of all, it can happen in a very quick time, in less than 20 minutes, which is empowering. Volume 3, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

The small changes, over time, can produce profound results. Think with the end goal in mind. One plate vs. two this Thanksgiving could be a small win. 4. Connect with family & friends - your Thanksgiving turkey might not be the only thing getting rubbed. Challenging relationships this time of year may also be thematic. Who in the family irritates you that you are forced to spend time can create a rub of its own? Perhaps think about what you can learn about yourself from these relationships? Q

Dear Claudia,

I contacted my interior designer last week about getting my home ready for the holidays; however, she informed me that if I want to custom design my dining room in time for Christmas, it’s already too late! How can that be? It’s only Fall! My family will be visiting from out-of-town, and I am also hosting the dessert course of our neighborhood’s progressive dinner party in December. I’d like to spruce up my space in preparation. What should I do? Thanks in advance! Laura in Charlotte, NC

A

Dear Laura,

I often get calls from clients who are eager to overhaul their home but are short on time. Custom room designs can take weeks, if not months, from conception to installation, but you can still make your home entertainment-ready in time for the holidays. Below are my pro tips for turning your home from Ho-Ho-Ho-Hum to Deck the Halls in no time.

and ask for feedback about what works. Ask them to focus on what can easily be removed and/or changed. A fresh set of eyes will offer you proper perspective. A staging tip is to use accessories that are larger than a mango. Visually, a bunch of itty-bitty objects read as clutter. It’s better to use a few larger-scaled items to pull a console together rather than several very small ones. This is especially true when styling a bookcase, which can quickly mutate into visual clutter if you’re not selective with your accessories. When pulling a room together, your eyes need space to rest. Decluttering goes a long way in updating the look of your home.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN! It’s not unusual to walk into a client’s home and find that it’s too dark to comfortably entertain. If you’re like me, you are energy conscious and navigate your home in bat-like conditions. Using layered lighting, such as table and floor lamps, is a great fix. The easiest way to brighten your home is to open up the drapes, blinds, and shutters and allow some of that glorious sunshine to make its way into your home. While you are at it, and if weather permits, open your windows and let some fresh air in as well. Thankfully, newer homes are built to be much more energy efficient than homes of the past. Unfortunately, this also means

sitive guests. Citrus and spice scents tend to be more easily tolerated. Essential oils can both pleasantly scent the air and offer health-promoting benefits. And don’t forget about your furry friends. I sometimes forget that not everyone loves pets as much as I do. Washing pet bedding and using throw blankets that can be laundered on your upholstered furniture may help minimize pet hair and odors.

ACCESSORIZE WITH NATURE I delight in a home that’s been decorated for the holidays. However, like accessories, holiday décor looks best when it is carefully curated. Whether your holiday theme is made up of cherished family heirlooms or decorations in your favorite color palette, group similar items together (rather than spreading things out over various surfaces) so that your collection looks cohesive. One of my favorite ways to decorate is to use items from nature. It’s fresh, eco-friendly, and items can be composted when you’re done using them, which also reduces the need for storage space. Pumpkins, gourds, magnolia leaves, evergreen branches, pinecones, birch logs, holly, clove-studded citrus, cranberries, and cinnamon sticks can all be used to create nature-inspired, earth-friendly holiday décor.

GIVE YOUR POWDER ROOM A FACE-LIFT Finally, you can add big style by giving your powder room a makeover! Turning your powder room into a jewel box is a

no-brainer way to wow guests. Impactful art, wallpaper (or a gorgeous new paint color), fresh linens, and updated lighting can turn a small, overlooked space into a showpiece. As you can see, there’s plenty that you can do to make your house fabulous in time for your guests. You’re going to rock that dinner party! Thanks for your question, Laura, and Happy Holidays!

as well as upgrades to HVAC, lighting, security, life safety and technology systems. The Asheville Art Museum’s new, state-ofthe-art, 54,000 square foot facility showcases American art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Museum challenges guests to experience the art of this period and explore its relationship to western North Carolina and the Southeast. Asheville Art Museum Executive Director Pamela L. Myers notes, “In rebuilding our home...we reflected on what it means to be in this place, a site nestled in the mountains of Appalachia of significance to native and immigrant communities of all backgrounds.”The new Museum opens with two exhibitions that examine the vitality of the region. For Appalachia Now! An Interdisciplinary Survey of Contemporary Art in Southern Appalachia, New York-based scholar and curator Jason Andrew considered more than 700 artists from the Southern Appalachian states of North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. After 55 studio visits, Andrew selected the work of 50 diverse working artists. The Museum’s second opening exhibition, Intersections in American Art, offers a fresh look at their permanent Collection. A grant from the Henry Luce Foundation allowed a diverse group, including an NC poet laureate, to help reinterpret the Museum’s Collection with ideas derived from the groundbreaking Black Mountain College (1933-1957). Founded in 1993, the BMCM+AC celebrates the history of Black Mountain College and explores its extraordinary impact on modern and contemporary art, dance, theater, music, and performance. Today, the museum remains committed to educating the public about BMC’s history and raising awareness of its extensive legacy. Their goal is to provide a gathering point for people from a variety of backgrounds to interact through art, ideas, and discourse. They offer historic and contemporary exhibitions, dynamic events, and research opportunities for those interested in any and all aspects of Black Mountain College. Winter Fashion Wonderland: Fall/Winter 2019 Highlights by Sharon Jane

The most wonderful time of the year is here! The air is filled with cheer, giving, celebrating and all of the fuzzy goodies we love about the holiday season. Fashion has been reflecting this warm heartedness, veering into the light with more feel good and all-beauty inclusive collections. Although there were some outstanding styles that are surely trending for the holiday season, what trended the most was this joie de vivre, going back to our roots, awareness and embracing ourselves and each other. The Fall/Winter fashion season also gifted us with eco-friendly collections, unexpected trends that you would more likely see in warmer seasons, polar opposite trends, inspired designers, magical moments, and show-stopping classics. With that being said, here are 6 jolly trending highlights of the Fall/Winter 2019-20 collections:

1. Feel Good Fashion What’s been trending the most in fashion

lately? Definitely, good vibes. There

has been a new and refreshing atmosphere at

fashion shows. Zendaya fulfilled her

dream and the dreams of many by showcas-

ing her collaboration with Tommy

Hilfiger and the “image architect”, Law Roach

at the famous Harlem Theater, The

Apollo. Since the Apollo is known for its signif-

icance to black artistry, Zendaya paid

homage to those that paved the way for her to

be there today, releasing this beau-

tiful collaboration at the landmark. Trumpets

blared, dancers grooved their way to

the late 70s inspired set, and beautiful models of all sizes, ethnicities, and age strutted down the runway full of confidence and big smiles. The joy that the models evoked was very contagious and you could see the crowd laughing, dancing, and having a great time. It was really nice to see such pure bliss at a fashion show. The legendary supermodel Alek Wek danced and waved as she

46

closed the show, followed by Zendaya, Tommy Hilfiger, Law Roach and their entourage of beautifully diverse models greeting their loved ones and waving to the applauding audience. They really stayed true to that sense of community we all long for. What should also be noted is that the Fall/Winter collection was “see now, buy now”, meaning that it showcased in September during New York Fashion Week and it is now available for purchase. September fashion weeks are usually reserved to showcase Spring/Summer collections since collections are seen at fashion shows 6 months prior to being available for purchase. With an increasingly digital, fast-paced audience, other designers like Burberry, Ralph Lauren and Mulberry have released “see now, buy now” collections. The Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya collection is in fact a perfect example of the new direction fashion weeks are hoping to take. New York Fashion Week is the destination week known for being a pioneer in making daring yet positive changes, like being more diverse, and it paves the way for the European fashion weeks to cast more diverse models. Although New York Fashion Week leads its European counterparts in diversity, this Fall/Winter Ready-To-Wear season was the most diverse yet. Although there is yet to see an inspiring rise in gender, age, and size in fashion week, Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya really set the example by having all inclusive, all beautiful models that just shared one thing in common: happiness.

2. Expect the Unexpected Like wearing white after Labor Day or floral for fall, fashion week overcame with the rules and stigmas of fashion. Florals for fall was truly groundbreaking to see, an opposing nod to the usual rustic foliage prints we are used to seeing. As fashion steps out of its comfort zone, it is also showing us that there are no rules in fashion anymore and that the only rule is to wear what makes you happy. If wearing floral, mixing silk with wool, or wearing sunny colors in the winter tickles you pink, then go for it! After all, what could possibly make us feel warmer than a crisp orange coat or a spring-reminiscent turtleneck? Designers like Carolina

Herrera,

Alexander

McQueen, Self-Portrait Prada, Dries Van Noten, Sally Lapointe, Richard Quinn, Rodarte, and Zimmerman all brought July in Christmas.

style 3. Polar Opposites Attract Perhaps it was a yin and yang situation, a Zen way to discover that you can have the best of both worlds, a way to bring balance and harmony to the fashion universe. Like the holidays maximize the good in the world, we saw contrasting trends get along. Maximalism vs. Minimalism (like Tomo Koizumi and Jil Sander), Modern vs Retro (Rick Owens and Michael Kors), Business vs. Flirty (Giorgio Armani and Zimmerman), Brights vs. Neutrals (Prabal Gurung and Max Mara), Goth vs. Girly (Prada and Rodarte), and Prints vs. Monochromatic (Chanel and Sally Lapointe) were some of the polar opposite vibes we saw

all throughout Fall/Winter 2019 ReadyTo-Wear. Designers designed with their sincere personalities, wearing their hearts on their sleeves as they shared uniquely inspired collections with confidence for a diverse fashion loving community.

4. Caring for Our Planet Since our beautiful blue and green planet has been asking us to take action and take care of it, fashion week listened and delivered. More and more designers are doing incredible things and taking new measures to be as sustainable as possible. It’s encouraging to know that so many designers are willing to try new methods to create and promote their collections that cause less harm to our planet. Alexander McQueen had designs made from repurposed materials, Vivienne Westwood created a platform for activists to share their information on sustainability and Westwood made her viewpoint known buy including the slogan “buy less, choose well, make it last” on her designs, and Mara Hoffman always finds new ways to beautifully decrease her carbon footprint. Stella McCartney is a widely known advocate of sustainability, that aside from creating eco-friendly clothes, she is an activist that is involved in initiatives like a rainforest conservation project. Gabriela Hearst always goes above and beyond when it comes to decreasing her carbon footprint. In her Fall/Winter

48

collection, she showed her support and contribution for the nonprofit organization called Our Children’s Trust which supports “21 young people across America in their fight for court ordered implementation of systemic science-based Climate Recovery Plans to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations to safe levels before 2100” (vogue.com). Some of the more casual brands are also taking initiative like H&M’s Conscious collection, which is made partially from the clothes people donate in local H&M stores. For every bag of fabric or clothing someone brings, they are given 15% discount cards for their next purchases. The Fall/Winter Paris Couture Week also presented to us with conscious designers like Ronald Van Der Kemp who is a known leader in sustainability. He created a collection 98% solely with repurposed materials. He even pulled out materials from his archives, inspiring us to also see the magic and benefit of wearing vintage. Van Der Kemp and Gaultier both found new methods to replace fur and even faux fur, which is usually made with petroleum based products.

5. Inspiration Is Everywhere At all Fall/Winter shows, it was evident that designers were very inspired and we were blessed to witness it. Viktor & Rolf gave us all a happily-ever-after come to life for Paris Couture Week, as they gave us magic personified designs. With holistic, fairytale, Klimt-like imagery, it awoke the story time-loving kid in all of us. Following the magical theme, Dior presented an enchanting couture collection inspired by the power behind the elements in alchemy in a chimerical set designed by feminist surrealist Penny Slinger in collaboration with Maria Grazia Chiuri. Magic, science, and the feminine force combined to create a magnificent collection architecturally done to focus on texture, illusion, and shapes rather than color. Designers like Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Jil Sander, among many others, were inspired by architecture and made surprising shapes leaving us in awe of the incredible things creative tailoring can make. style sented a Winter Wonderland inspired collection, one that is perfect for winter things although the somber farewell of the beloved Karl Lagerfeld was there as the show also served as an homage for the French fashion powerhouse’s creative director’s recent passing. Whether you are inspired by the future, the past, a movie, a song, a destination or a beloved someone, make it known because you never know who you will be inspiring next.

6. Show-Stopping Classics Step right into Ralph’s Club for a star-studded night full of black tie elegance and jazzy entertainment. Ralph Lauren, like other designers, brought back live entertainment in fashion shows, for his Fall/Winter collection. Like something out of a Scott Fitzgerald novel, the audience dressed to the nines matched the sophisticated collection filled with glitzy Le Smokings, bow ties, femme fatale gowns, satin tuxedoes, velvet robes and perfect LBD’s. Ralph said a little party never hurt nobody as he closed the show with a breathtaking and electrifying jazz classics medley by the 8 Grammy-nominated, Janelle Monáe. Designers like Richard Quinn, Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya, Lela Rose, The Blonds, and Michael Kors were some clear examples that you can have a good time with fashion, whether its a performance by Barry Manilow or a dog show.

Now what’s the takeaway? Dare to be the life of the party and have fun with fashion for the holiday season of celebration and togetherness. Embrace your beauty, meet your muse and be inspired to create moments that will last forever whether it’s for others, the planet, or yourself. 50

How a Giving Heart Came from Heartbreak:

passing was just too much for Jansen, causing a break in concentration and ultimately his falling several times. “It was a mental battle for me. What if I go out there and win and people think I don’t care? When you’re getting ready for the race in the Olympics, that’s not the mindset you should have. We decided as a family about what would Jane want. She would have felt so bad if I didn’t go out there and try. She knew this was my dream and this was my life at the time and I worked so hard to get where I was,” Jansen remembers. The family decided in unison that he was destined to give it a shot. In the end Jansen says, “It didn’t work out, because my

By trial and error, Jansen’s foundation quickly realized it must narrow focus for an effective swing in the pendulum of change. Stories of families in similar situations as the Jansen family’s are quite common. Frequent travel for specialists and treatments in other cities quickly wears on the most tenacious spirits. And, the economic demands for frequent air fares, hotel reservations and other unplanned expenditures easily drain most any household budget. “So, we started the family aid fund to help the families that are in this position. That’s the fund that is really big for us,” says Jansen. To date, the foundation has helped over 750 families. “It’s not necessarily huge scales. But, we get requests almost daily, certainly weekly, for families of those being treated. Now, we go between Charlotte Levine Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. The social workers find us the families that need the help. A lot of times it may be that they’re in trouble. Whether their utilities are about to be turned off, or they can’t make mortgage and/ or car payments, the foundation will pay for a couple months. Unfortunately, we’ve paid for funeral costs even,” he explains. The foundation recently merged with a Maryland non-profit called Cool Kids which is “devoted to improving the quality of life for pediatric oncology patients and their families by focusing on the academic, social and emotional needs brought on by a cancer diagnosis.”

And just in time for the holidays, the Cool Kids Club House in Honor of Dan Jansen opens December 7th. Here kids and their families can create a new sense of normal with moments like movie nights, birthday parties and end of chemo celebrations. Though it may be far better to give than to receive, to give often calls for capital. One of the many ways The Dan Jansen Foundation’s mission

Recipes and photos by Jessica Bentley

One of Phillips Place’s most admired restaurants, WP Kitchen + Bar offers an awe-inspiring menu with a rustic-meets-chic ambiance that’s both welcoming and cozy. For feasting options… don’t expect a dull, corporate line-up here. In addition to showcasing Wolfgang’s signature dishes (hello Wiener Schnitzel), the culinary team also serves a variety of seasonal specialties from regional partners and purveyors. Recently, the team added brunch to their roster, so we obviously had to go check it out!

78

Volume 3, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Chef Stephen Schmitt has been at the helm of WP Kitchen + Bar since it opened as WP Pizza Bar in 2012. As a Charlotte native, he takes an enormous amount of pride in what they create for their guests. “Our inspiration behind the menu stems from a collaboration of classics from Wolfgang, produce that is in season at the time, and dishes inspired by my travels. It is a great balance of tradition and trendy that our regulars seem to appreciate - which is why we keep doing what we’re doing.” To compliment the menu, local bartender extraordinaire, Michael Mascali, has created a beverage program that is equally impressive. From classics to new-age, there’s a drink for every palate. “As a staple in Phillips Place for 7 years, we felt it was time to add a new offering for our regulars to enjoy. As a team, we play around with breakfast dishes often for our staff meals before service, so it was a fun and easy transition to open that up to the public on Sundays. The menu is something we are very proud of - a mix of traditional offerings such as French Toast with my own touches like the Korean Chicken & Waffles. We hope you all enjoy it!” – Chef Stephen To kick-off our menu tasting on a sweet note, we started with the pastry team’s handmade donuts. The plating came with two varieties: a vanilla donut with lemon glaze and blueberry-filled donut holes that had an elegant dusting of sugar. There’s a side of milk jam for your dunking pleasure, and we suggest you use it. Volume 3, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

79

The culinary staff makes their own brioche for the French Toast, so it was a given that we needed to order it. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. There’s a crispy exterior shell that surrounds the fluffy interior of this dish, and it’s served with smooth maple syrup. They’ve unquestionably put their own finesse on this conventional brunch item, so we would order it again in a heartbeat. Next, we moved on to the savory side of our tasting by sampling the Shakshuka, Crispy Chicken Biscuit, and Korean Chicken + Waffles. SHAKSHUKA: A conventional middle eastern dish fashioned with poached eggs, tomato sauce and spices. WP Kitchen’s version is prepared with lamb sausage, spiced tomato sauce, caramelized onions, cilantro and feta. It comes with a side of pita bread as well.

KOREAN CHICKEN + WAFFLES: We love the combination of sweet and savory (who doesn’t?), so this plate of deliciousness is a real treat. Crispy Chicken is coated in a sweet-heat Korean sauce that pairs flawlessly with charred scallions and scratch-made waffles. Drizzle it all with warm maple syrup and you’ve got yourself a meal to remember. This is perfection on a plate. Seriously. Their brunch offerings have a little bit of something for everyone: from French Omelets with fine herbs, boursin and hollandaise to Potato & Egg Pizza with garlic cream and Calabrian chili oil (one of Chef Stephen’s favorites, inspired by his honeymoon in Italy). WP Kitchen + Bar is located at 6706-C Philips Place Court in Charlotte. They are open daily, 11am – close. If you’d like to join them for dinner, make sure to order the Sweet Corn Agnolotti (seasonal special) or UAV Ricotta (my personal favorite)! CRISPY CHICKEN BISCUIT: A cherished southern delight that we all hold dear to our hearts. This buttery biscuit is jam-packed with flavor; piled high with glorious fried chicken, white cheddar, smoked bacon and served with crispy Tuscan potatoes.

While steeped in history, Venice is also actually visually highly progressive, staging artistic and architectural Biennales that are the envy and forums of the creative world. These are staged in the gardens, again a healthy walk north of St Mark’s. Whenever possible I choose to spend time on the Giudecca as it is cut off from the two main islands and, with only the Redentore church in the guidebooks, It is as good as anywhere to be amongst the Venetians going about their daily lives. Michelangelo spent three years exiled on the island from 1529. The Giudecca has two churches designed by Palladio are evenly placed across the islands as though ‘in communicado’ with each other and the high statues appear to be conversing with one another on an altogether higher plane. If you spot a green church door open seize the moment to look inside as often they are shut. Here congregations are still numerous as are the monks and clerics walking throughout the city.

For a thousand years the city kept her independence under an unbroken line of doges, only to be upended by Napoleon who at least was humble enough to grant that the Piazzo St Marco resembled the grandest drawing room in Europe. The best way to enjoy the city is to combine the central sights with the local outer parishes. You’re bound to get lost down one of the cramp passageways that often result in a dead-end. It’s easy to get claustrophobic so it’s important to maintain a sense of the expansive lagoon. So combine the city centre with the wide walkable expanse of the quaysides and the exposure to the sea. route linking the station, the Rialto bridge and St Mark’s piazza. I got hold of a Venezaia Unica city pass for the vaporettos to ease my daily trips. I visited the Campo San Polo, the largest of the city’s squares (the St Marco one is a piazza) and watch children kick footballs irreverently against the church walls. Eat with the locals at the Madonna by the Rialto has fresh crab and is close to the food market where seagulls are shooed away by the fishmongers. I stayed at the Hotel Bauer looking right over the end of the Grand Canal and right behind Piazza San Marco. It’s ideally central for tourists. It has a 1960’s architectural front and boasts a luxuriant interior. The lobby and bar are locally adorned with Seguso glass from the Murano foundry. The restaurant menu is Attend one of the many evening classical music performances inside (perhaps in the Pieta where Vivaldi taught). A true romantic will replenish their soul by coming for Christmas and attending the midnight mass on Christmas Eve in St Mark’s Basilica where the ‘smells and bells’ of Catholicism fuses with the Byzantine gilded décor, the darkness alleviated by lanterns and candles. Get on a boat of any description. After all it’s what the Venetians do as their way of life. I had a day trip on Lagunalonga (www.lagunalonga.it) with Francesco, the charismatic de Niro lookalike skipper, who was dedicated to giving me the day I wanted which was to see the outer islands of Burano (renown for its lace), Murano (its glass) and Torcello (the earliest and most remote church and of the settlements). elsewhere, it’s true that Venice will need the advance of science to defy its doom. The lack of combustion, save for the busying vaporettos and time-saving and personal water taxis allows for the unique quality of a city without permanent noise. The lapping ripples of the encroaching water, invasive at aqua alta (high tide) remind one of the ultimate fragility of the lagoon while the sound of a barcarola (gondolier’s song) lulls one yet again. At night the serene sight (the Venetian empire’s sobriquet is La Serenissima”) of the domes and bell-towers (campanile) lit up along with their daytime muffled chiming affords a religious at around E15.000 a night is stunning and boasts an impressive guest list. Everywhere you can watch the Venetians go about their daily lives, garrulous, gesticular and hardened by the elements. For they are rugged, sea-faring, separatist and mercantile, putting up with tourists if only for their spending. It is easy to forget the harsh ambition and blood spilt to make this city the empire it was and the aesthetic delight it remains. Monet and Turner were drawn to the restless light, enhanced by the blues of the water and sky. Lord Byron swam across the Grand Canal with manly intent. Romantics and lovers, escapists all belong and thrive in this unique city. For many the mysticism of the weather and light is intoxicating, for some there’s the sense of foreboding as exemplified by the film “Don’t Look Now”. It’s true that the population is shrinking as the young look

Their mission is to protect, conserve, and responsibly manage the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roaming freely on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks, and to promote the continued preservation of this land as a permanent sanctuary for horses designated as the State Horse and defined as a cultural treasure by the state of North Carolina.

There are many ways to help these beautiful, majestic animals. From a one time gift to sponsoring a horse. Sponsoring a horse is an exciting and highly personalized way to support CWHF and its mission. Sponsors receive a beautifully embossed 8.5×11 leatherette presentation folder, complete with a color photo of the sponsored horse, an official sponsorship certificate, and information about the horse’s life. The $75 (or more if you choose) Horse Sponsorship program is a form of CWHF membership, and horse sponsorships are renewable annually. Sponsor Now or Give as a Gift. In addition to individual names, certificates can be made for a family, organization, or business name, e.g. “The Hansens” or “Corolla YMCA,” etc. A gift sponsorship is a great way to introduce someone to charitable giving and to the wild horses of Corolla. GIVING BACK ONE GAME AT A TIME The Hero World Challenge claims itself to be the “elite end-of year PGA Tour event” and once again the tournament field supports that very claim. This year the 2019 Hero World Challenge will be played at Albany, Bahamas, from Dec 1 – Dec. 7, and will feature tournament host Tiger Woods along with an invitation-only field comprised of the top ranked golfers in the world. The Hero World Challenge has grown into and become one of the most exclusive events in golf. 98

Volume 3, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

The event has been held in the same luxurious resort community since 2015. Held every December, the Hero World Challenge brings together 18 of the world’s top-ranked golfers in an event that benefits both the TGR Foundation and ONE Bahamas Fund. Because many of the golfers will also be playing in the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia the following week, a Saturday finish was arranged to allow for travel. As of this article, 16 of the 18 playing spots have been announced. In addition to Tiger Woods -- who is the 2019 Masters champion as well as the host of the Hero World Challenge -- those golfers who have committed to attending include past champions, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, defending tournament champion and Gary Woodland, champion of the 2019 US Open. Two exemptions will round out the field of players and those players will be announced later. GOLF Channel will provide live television coverage of the four rounds of the 2019 Hero World Challenge. NBC will televise the final round. Premium hospitality packages are limited and can be purchased online at the Hero World Challenge website prior to the event. Grounds tickets that allow entry any day of the tournament can also be purchased online.

about town asheville Chow Chow

Asheville’s new event, Chow Chow, was a multi-day immersive experience exploring the unique community of creative makers

around the city’s table—from growers and farmers to brewers and chefs to crafts people and artists. This past fall the festival celebrated both the vibrancy of Asheville, NC’s culinary scene as well as the many diverse hands that come together to create the colorful flavors of this corner of the Southern Appalachia. Farm dinners, tours and brunches, chef demonstrations, tastings and grand tastings, community yoga, seminars, live music, artists in action, hands-on activities, and panel discussions all brought the festival to life amidst the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A non-profit 501C3 organization, Chow Chow also partnerd with MANNA FoodBank raising awareness for its children’s backpack program. The festival was presented by Kimpton Hotel Arras.
