This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.”

he holiday season is upon us! This festive time often means more time with family and friends as well as parties and celebrations that create connection and

fun. But this time of year, can also mean increased stress and food intake, adding to the many reasons why it’s an integral time to focus on your heart and physical health.

The combination of family functions, shopping, travel and indulgent foods are the recipe for a perfect storm within the body. During this season, metabolisms often slow down, we get less sunlight and people lose motivation to get up, get out or go to the gym for exercise.

It’s hard to imagine, but did you know every winter, about 100 people in the U.S. pass away shoveling snow? Not to mention, that the day after Thanksgiving is one of busiest days in the hospital. This is because people who aren’t taking care of their heart and bodies fall victim to something as simple as the intake of too much food.

I share these facts with you, not to scare you, but instead to make sure you’re aware of the importance of handling stress and keeping a healthy heart over the holidays.

EXERCISE YOUR HEART The heart is a muscle. It’s different than your bicep, but it behaves very similar to your other muscles. When the heart is exercised, and beats faster, it gets stronger.

Cardiovascular activity, as long as it’s kept at the appropriate and safe intensity for the person doing the exercise, causes lactic acid and carbon dioxide to be released through the breath.

This allows more oxygen to come in, setting the stage for optimal conditions in the body…the release of toxins, the reduction of oxidative stress, an increase in both cellular energy and physical energy, improved mood, and much more!

When exercise reaches a certain intensity, the blood pressure starts to lower. This is because the body is expelling all the things that made it rise to begin with. The goal is to get your heart rate in a zone 60-80% of your calculated max training zone. The form of exercise can vary, from running to lifting heavy weights in a cardiovascular way. It all goes back to being in the proper heart rate zone.

At Fitness Together, we use heart monitors so clients know, on an intensity scale of one to ten, exactly where they stand. We also utilize breath patterns as a gauge to tell where a person is at from a heartrate standpoint. The idea is to be slightly of breath but still able to speak. We utilize Genetic Direction testing so people know what workouts are most effective for their unique body.

The Genetic Direction testing involves a mouth swab and provides a breakdown for each person surrounding what exercise and nutrition works best for them.

For example, I have a low response to cardiovascular training for weight loss but high response for insulin sensitivity (blood sugar). So cardio, for me, helps lower my blood sugar but does not help as much when it comes to losing weight.

Taking time for Self-care can make it easier to give to others.

No one can pour from an empty cup. Making sure time is carved out to create energy thru consistent exercise makes all the difference between things being merry & bright vs. singing the holiday blues. Keeping an attitude of gratitude is key to seeing this commitment thru. Studies show that those who train their mind to default to being thankful experience more success in all areas of life and also report greater satisfaction in life. The natural tendency of the mind is to default to the negative, so consider committing to a gratitude journal now thru the end of the year.

I’d like to spruce up my space in preparation. What should I do?

I often get calls from clients who are eager to overhaul their home but are short on time. Custom room designs can take weeks, if not months, from conception to installation, but you can still make your home entertainment-ready in time for the holidays. Below are my pro tips for turning your home from Ho-Ho-Ho-Hum to Deck the Halls in no time.

A staging tip is to use accessories that are larger than a mango. Visually, a bunch of itty-bitty objects read as clutter. It’s better to use a few larger-scaled items to pull a console together rather than several very small ones. This is especially true when styling a bookcase, which can quickly mutate into visual clutter if you’re not selective with your accessories. When pulling a room together, your eyes need space to rest. Decluttering goes a long way in updating the look of your home.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN! It’s not unusual to walk into a client’s home and find that it’s too dark to comfortably entertain. If you’re like me, you are energy conscious and navigate your home in bat-like conditions. Using layered lighting, such as table and floor lamps, is a great fix. The easiest way to brighten your home is to open up the drapes, blinds, and shutters and allow some of that glorious sunshine to make its way into your home. While you are at it, and if weather permits, open your windows and let some fresh air in as well. Thankfully, newer homes are built to be much more energy efficient than homes of the past. Unfortunately, this also means

Whether your holiday theme is made up of cherished family heirlooms or decorations in your favorite color palette, group similar items together (rather than spreading things out over various surfaces) so that your collection looks cohesive.

One of my favorite ways to decorate is to use items from nature. It’s fresh, eco-friendly, and items can be composted when you’re done using them, which also reduces the need for storage space. Pumpkins, gourds, magnolia leaves, evergreen branches, pinecones, birch logs, holly, clove-studded citrus, cranberries, and cinnamon sticks can all be used to create nature-inspired, earth-friendly holiday décor.

Winter Fashion Wonderland: Fall/Winter 2019 Highlights

The most wonderful time of the year is here! The air is filled with cheer, giving, celebrating and all of the fuzzy goodies we love about the holiday season. Fashion has been reflecting this warm heartedness, veering into the light with more feel good and all-beauty inclusive collections.

Although there were some outstanding styles that are surely trending for the holiday season, what trended the most was this joie de vivre, going back to our roots, awareness and embracing ourselves and each other. The Fall/Winter fashion season also gifted us with eco-friendly collections, unexpected trends that you would more likely see in warmer seasons, polar opposite trends, inspired designers, magical moments, and show-stopping classics. With that being said, here are 6 jolly trending highlights of the Fall/Winter 2019-20 collections:

1. Feel Good Fashion What’s been trending the most in fashion

The joy that the models evoked was very contagious and you could see the crowd laughing, dancing, and having a great time. It was really nice to see such pure bliss at a fashion show. The legendary supermodel Alek Wek danced and waved as she

closed the show, followed by Zendaya, Tommy Hilfiger, Law Roach and their entourage of beautifully diverse models greeting their loved ones and waving to the applauding audience. They really stayed true to that sense of community we all long for.

What should also be noted is that the Fall/Winter collection was “see now, buy now”, meaning that it showcased in September during New York Fashion Week and it is now available for purchase. September fashion weeks are usually reserved to showcase Spring/Summer collections since collections are seen at fashion shows 6 months prior to being available for purchase. With an increasingly digital, fast-paced audience, other designers like Burberry, Ralph Lauren and Mulberry have released “see now, buy now” collections.

The Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya collection is in fact a perfect example of the new direction fashion weeks are hoping to take. New York Fashion Week is the destination week known for being a pioneer in making daring yet positive changes, like being more diverse, and it paves the way for the European fashion weeks to cast more diverse models. Although New York Fashion Week leads its European counterparts in diversity, this Fall/Winter Ready-To-Wear season was the most diverse yet. Although there is yet to see an inspiring rise in gender, age, and size in fashion week, Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya really set the example by having all inclusive, all beautiful models that just shared one thing in common: happiness.

2. Expect the Unexpected Like wearing white after Labor Day or floral for fall, fashion week overcame with the rules and stigmas of fashion. Florals for fall was truly groundbreaking to see, an opposing nod to the usual rustic foliage prints we are used to seeing. As fashion steps out of its comfort zone, it is also showing us that there are no rules in fashion anymore and that the only rule is to wear what makes you happy. If wearing floral, mixing silk with wool, or wearing sunny colors in the winter tickles you pink, then go for it! After all, what could possibly make us feel warmer than a crisp orange coat or a spring-reminiscent turtleneck? Designers like Carolina

style 3. Polar Opposites Attract Perhaps it was a yin and yang situation, a Zen way to discover that you can have the best of both worlds, a way to bring balance and harmony to the fashion universe. Like the holidays maximize the good in the world, we saw contrasting trends get along. Maximalism vs. Minimalism (like Tomo Koizumi and Jil Sander), Modern vs Retro (Rick Owens and Michael Kors), Business vs. Flirty (Giorgio Armani and Zimmerman), Brights vs. Neutrals (Prabal Gurung and Max Mara), Goth vs. Girly (Prada and Rodarte), and Prints vs. Monochromatic (Chanel and Sally Lapointe) were some of the polar opposite vibes we saw

all throughout Fall/Winter 2019 ReadyTo-Wear. Designers designed with their sincere personalities, wearing their hearts on their sleeves as they shared uniquely inspired collections with confidence for a diverse fashion loving community.

4. Caring for Our Planet Since our beautiful blue and green planet has been asking us to take action and take care of it, fashion week listened and delivered. More and more designers are doing incredible things and taking new measures to be as sustainable as possible. It’s encouraging to know that so many designers are willing to try new methods to create and promote their collections that cause less harm to our planet.

Alexander McQueen had designs made from repurposed materials, Vivienne Westwood created a platform for activists to share their information on sustainability and Westwood made her viewpoint known buy including the slogan “buy less, choose well, make it last” on her designs, and Mara Hoffman always finds new ways to beautifully decrease her carbon footprint. Stella McCartney is a widely known advocate of sustainability, that aside from creating eco-friendly clothes, she is an activist that is involved in initiatives like a rainforest conservation project. Gabriela Hearst always goes above and beyond when it comes to decreasing her carbon footprint. In her Fall/Winter

collection, she showed her support and contribution for the nonprofit organization called Our Children’s Trust which supports “21 young people across America in their fight for court ordered implementation of systemic science-based Climate Recovery Plans to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations to safe levels before 2100” (vogue.com). Some of the more casual brands are also taking initiative like H&M’s Conscious collection, which is made partially from the clothes people donate in local H&M stores. For every bag of fabric or clothing someone brings, they are given 15% discount cards for their next purchases.

The Fall/Winter Paris Couture Week also presented to us with conscious designers like Ronald Van Der Kemp who is a known leader in sustainability. He created a collection 98% solely with repurposed materials. He even pulled out materials from his archives, inspiring us to also see the magic and benefit of wearing vintage. Van Der Kemp and Gaultier both found new methods to replace fur and even faux fur, which is usually made with petroleum based products.

5. Inspiration Is Everywhere At all Fall/Winter shows, it was evident that designers were very inspired and we were blessed to witness it. Viktor & Rolf gave us all a happily-ever-after come to life for Paris Couture Week, as they gave us magic personified designs. With holistic, fairytale, Klimt-like imagery, it awoke the story time-loving kid in all of us. Following the magical theme, Dior presented an enchanting couture collection inspired by the power behind the elements in alchemy in a chimerical set designed by feminist surrealist Penny Slinger in collaboration with Maria Grazia Chiuri. Magic, science, and the feminine force combined to create a magnificent collection architecturally done to focus on texture, illusion, and shapes rather than color. Designers like Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Jil Sander, among many others, were inspired by architecture and made surprising shapes leaving us in awe of the incredible things creative tailoring can make. style sented a Winter Wonderland inspired collection, one that is perfect for winter things although the somber farewell of the beloved Karl Lagerfeld was there as the show also served as an homage for the French fashion powerhouse’s creative director’s recent passing.

Whether you are inspired by the future, the past, a movie, a song, a destination or a beloved someone, make it known because you never know who you will be inspiring next.

6. Show-Stopping Classics Step right into Ralph’s Club for a star-studded night full of black tie elegance and jazzy entertainment. Ralph Lauren, like other designers, brought back live entertainment in fashion shows, for his Fall/Winter collection. Like something out of a Scott Fitzgerald novel, the audience dressed to the nines matched the sophisticated collection filled with glitzy Le Smokings, bow ties, femme fatale gowns, satin tuxedoes, velvet robes and perfect LBD’s. Ralph said a little party never hurt nobody as he closed the show with a breathtaking and electrifying jazz classics medley by the 8 Grammy-nominated, Janelle Monáe.

Designers like Richard Quinn, Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya, Lela Rose, The Blonds, and Michael Kors were some clear examples that you can have a good time with fashion, whether its a performance by Barry Manilow or a dog show.

Frequent travel for specialists and treatments in other cities quickly wears on the most tenacious spirits. And, the economic demands for frequent air fares, hotel reservations and other unplanned expenditures easily drain most any household budget.

“So, we started the family aid fund to help the families that are in this position. That’s the fund that is really big for us,” says Jansen.

To date, the foundation has helped over 750 families.

“It’s not necessarily huge scales. But, we get requests almost daily, certainly weekly, for families of those being treated.

Now, we go between Charlotte Levine Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. The social workers find us the families that need the help. A lot of times it may be that they’re in trouble. Whether their utilities are about to be turned off, or they can’t make mortgage and/ or car payments, the foundation will pay for a couple months.

In addition to showcasing Wolfgang’s signature dishes (hello Wiener Schnitzel), the culinary team also serves a variety of seasonal specialties from regional partners and purveyors. Recently, the team added brunch to their roster, so we obviously had to go check it out!

As a Charlotte native, he takes an enormous amount of pride in what they create for their guests. “Our inspiration behind the menu stems from a collaboration of classics from Wolfgang, produce that is in season at the time, and dishes inspired by my travels. It is a great balance of tradition and trendy that our regulars seem to appreciate - which is why we keep doing what we’re doing.” To compliment the menu, local bartender extraordinaire, Michael Mascali, has created a beverage program that is equally impressive. From classics to new-age, there’s a drink for every palate.

As a team, we play around with breakfast dishes often for our staff meals before service, so it was a fun and easy transition to open that up to the public on Sundays. The plating came with two varieties: a vanilla donut with lemon glaze and blueberry-filled donut holes that had an elegant dusting of sugar. The culinary staff makes their own brioche for the French Toast, so it was a given that we needed to order it. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. There’s a crispy exterior shell that surrounds the fluffy interior of this dish, and it’s served with smooth maple syrup. They’ve unquestionably put their own finesse on this conventional brunch item, so we would order it again in a heartbeat.

Next, we moved on to the savory side of our tasting by sampling the Shakshuka, Crispy Chicken Biscuit, and Korean Chicken + Waffles.

SHAKSHUKA: A conventional middle eastern dish fashioned with poached eggs, tomato sauce and spices. WP Kitchen’s version is prepared with lamb sausage, spiced tomato sauce, caramelized onions, cilantro and feta. It comes with a side of pita bread as well.

KOREAN CHICKEN + WAFFLES: We love the combination of sweet and savory (who doesn’t?), so this plate of deliciousness is a real treat. Crispy Chicken is coated in a sweet-heat Korean sauce that pairs flawlessly with charred scallions and scratch-made waffles. Drizzle it all with warm maple syrup and you’ve got yourself a meal to remember. This is perfection on a plate. Seriously.

Their brunch offerings have a little bit of something for everyone: from French Omelets with fine herbs, boursin and hollandaise to Potato & Egg Pizza with garlic cream and Calabrian chili oil (one of Chef Stephen’s favorites, inspired by his honeymoon in Italy).

I got hold of a Venezaia Unica city pass for the vaporettos to ease my daily trips. I visited the Campo San Polo, the largest of the city’s squares (the St Marco one is a piazza) and watch children kick footballs irreverently against the church walls. Eat with the locals at the Madonna by the Rialto has fresh crab and is close to the food market where seagulls are shooed away by the fishmongers.

I stayed at the Hotel Bauer looking right over the end of the Grand Canal and right behind Piazza San Marco. It’s ideally central for tourists. It has a 1960’s architectural front and boasts a luxuriant interior. The lobby and bar are locally adorned with Seguso glass from the Murano foundry. SUPER EASY CHOCOLATE BARK Create a delicious batch of Chocolate Bark, in less than 20 minutes, at home. It’s the perfect afternoon activity to do with your kids and makes a great gift!

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing your bark toppings. We often make ours with a mix of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and bee pollen. However, feel free to substitute with what you have on hand. Don’t be afraid to explore topping options and have fun with it.

• 2 Plain Dark Chocolate Bars, melted • 1 cup preferred toppings (nuts, seeds, dried fruit, bee pollen, etc.)

• Sea salt, optional to intensify flavor

DIRECTIONS: 1. Gather all supplies you need for assembly. You will need a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, all your toppings and a bowl for melting the chocolate.

2. Melt chocolate in the microwave: about 1 minute. Pour melted chocolate onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

3. Grab the toppings and start decorating by sprinkling them on top of the melted chocolate.

4. Throw bark in the freezer for 10 minutes to harden.

5. Lick the remaining chocolate out of the bowl while you wait for the bark to harden.

6. Break apart and enjoy! Store leftovers in an airtight container on the counter.

Serves: 4

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH BROWN SUGAR INGREDIENTS:

• 1 lb. Brussels Sprouts, cut in half

• ¼ cup Olive Oil

• ½ small Sweet White Onion, finely chopped

• Pinch of Salt, to taste

• 1 tbsp. Old-Style Grain Mustard

• ½ cup Sweet & Spicy Pecans (recipe link below)

• 2 tbsp. Brown Sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

2. Prepare Brussels sprouts and white onion and place into a large mixing bowl.

3. Combine mustard, brown sugar and olive oil in a small mixing bowl and then pour over the vegetables. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt.

4. Pour evenly onto the prepared baking sheet and cook for approximately 25 minutes, or until just browning and the Brussels are tender.

5. Transfer Brussels to a serving dish and mix-in Sweet & Spicy Pecans. Serve immediately.

Asheville’s new event, Chow Chow, was a multi-day immersive experience exploring the unique community of creative makers

around the city’s table—from growers and farmers to brewers and chefs to crafts people and artists. This past fall the festival celebrated both the vibrancy of Asheville, NC’s culinary scene as well as the many diverse hands that come together to create the colorful flavors of this corner of the Southern Appalachia. Farm dinners, tours and brunches, chef demonstrations, tastings and grand tastings, community yoga, seminars, live music, artists in action, hands-on activities, and panel discussions all brought the festival to life amidst the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A non-profit 501C3 organization, Chow Chow also partnerd with MANNA FoodBank raising awareness for its children’s backpack program. The festival was presented by Kimpton Hotel Arras.
