“If you want to Know Pinehurst, you need to Know Lin”

Boxwood Court Buy a Piece of History! ‘’Boxwood Court’’, located on 2.6 acres in Old Town Pinehurst, was built in 1905 as one of the major residences of the new winter resort known as Pinehurst, North Carolina. New York Publisher Tyler L Redfield was the original owner of this large-one-and-one-half-story bungalow, the first house to be built on the west side of Beulah Hill Rd. The stuccoed house has a broad, gable roof, a shed dormer, and an engaged porch with heavy Tuscan columns across the front. In 1929 Eldrige Johnson, head of Victor talking machine (RCA Victor) purchased Boxwood Court. There have been a handful of owners since that time, but no one has put more time, talent and treasure in restoring this beautiful structure as the current owners.

Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Adam Jacot de Boinod is a British author, most famous for his works about unusual words. He has written three books, the first two (The Meaning of Tingo and Toujours Tingo) looking at words that have no equivalent in the English language, and his latest book (The Wonder of Whiffling) looking at unusual words in English. He worked on the first series of the television panel game QI. His research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.”

good reads PALM BEACH BY AERIN LAUDER Early in the 1900s, one-time oil baron Henry Morrison Flagler took interest in the Southern coast of Florida and began developing an exclusive resort community. Establishing a railroad that would allow easier access to the area, he went on to build two hotels—his hope was that America’s first families would come to populate the area. This modest community would later evolve into an iconic American destination, hosting British royalty, American movie stars, and becoming the home-away-from-home to some of the country’s leading families. As the century continued, Palm Beach established itself as a luxury hideaway synonymous with old-world glamour and newworld sophistication. In this splendid volume, longtime resident and Palm Beach social fixture Aerin Lauder takes us through her Palm Beach. From favorite restaurants like Nandos and Renatos, to favorite houses like La Follia and Villa Artemis, she takes us to the elite shopping of Worth Avenue and the scenic walkways of the Lake Worth trail, all the while relating to us the histories, faces, and places that have become so identified with Palm Beach. Available at www.assouline.come

THE LUXURY COLLECTION: HOTEL SECRETS The seventh volume in The Luxury Collection series, The Luxury Collection: Hotel Secrets discovers the hidden stories of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Uncover the secrets of each destination and draw exceptional insights from travel tastemakers such as artist Donald Robertson, fashion mogul Laure Heriard Dubreuil, designer Waris Ahluwalia, and photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank. The Luxury Collection is an ensemble of more than one hundred fifteen of the world’s finest hotels and resorts, each noteworthy for its architecture, art, furnishings, and amenities. Sharing a dedication to immaculate service and comfort, each property has a unique heritage inextricably tied to its destination. Curated for their spirit of diversity and genre, each Luxury Collection property has a story to tell. Available at www.assouline.com

AMERICAN DIRT

BY JEANINE CUMMINS

Already being hailed as “a Grapes of Wrath for our times” and “a new American classic,” American Dirt is a rare exploration into the inner hearts of people willing to sacrifice everything for a glimmer of hope. American Dirt will leave readers utterly changed when they finish reading it. It is a page-turner, it is a literary achievement, it is filled with poignancy, drama, and humanity on every page. It is one of the most important books for our times.

SUCH A FUN AGE BY KILEY REID

A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both. With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone “family,” and the complicated reality of being a grown up. It is a searing debut for our times.

fter almost 90 years Lili Bermuda Perfumery has landed in the U.S. Palm Beach to be exact. And we could not be more excited. Despite international acclaim and rising demand, Lili Bermuda fragrances were available exclusively in Bermuda or on their website until now. While in Palm Beach I was able to pop into the new and only U.S. store located on Worth Avenue down the quaint Via Newsome, similar to

a charming St. George’s alley. Here is where I met the delightful Ivy Goldberg the store manager who took me through the journey of Lili Bermuda. It is a wonderfully welcoming space like stepping into a Bermuda home where you can take your time and experience the scents of Bermuda. Maybe even sip a Dark n’ Stormy while you choose your fragrance.

The sparse availability of Lili Bermuda fragrances has remained consistent through its 90-year history, where the discriminating clientele has remained faithful to the romantic stories told in each carefully handcrafted bottle of fragrance made on the island paradise of Bermuda. “Lili Bermuda is an artistic reflection of Bermuda where each fragrance represents the Island’s natural beauty: from the pure scent of the wind and fresh salt spray of the ocean, to its luscious botanicals such as Bermuda cedarwood, spring freesias and juicy loquats. Every creation is meticulously developed on-island at historic Stewart Hall under the direction of Perfumer Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone. “Art reflects environment,” she says and Bermuda’s authenticity is present in every bottle filled by hand. You can catch Isabelle in the Perfumery early in the morning weighing essential oils and blending them into a fragrance that captures the story of Bermuda” Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

WHAT SELLS A FRAGRANCE?

I believe that what sells a fragrance is the emotional connection that it triggers when you smell the fragrance. It can be because it reminds you of someone special, of a memorable place, or simply because you think it smells divine and you want to surround yourself with such beauty.

WHAT LILI BERMUDA SCENT STARTED THE COMPANY AND HOW HAS THE POPULARITY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

The very first fragrance of Lili Bermuda was Easter Lily, which was created back in 1928. In those days Bermuda Easter lilies were exported to the

because that fragrance will make you feel beautiful…..and that is certainly the most important factor. It is a new decade and time to change and evolve a bit, a fun way is with our perfume and signature scent.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE NEW SCENTS OF THE 20’S COMING FROM OR BEING?

Great question! I think that we have gone so far in terms of creating weird and abstract fragrances that there may be a bit of going back to the inspiration of simple nature: single flowers, classic orientals and fougeres, but with modern and quality materials. As I said below, the recent innovations have brought to our pallet some amazing materials in the recent years. I think perfumers will also focus on what their individual style is as opposed to just do whatever is in style.

HOW ARE NEW SCENTS DEVELOPED, WHERE DOES THE INSPIRATION COME FROM?

You have to come to Bermuda to see where my inspiration comes from…. this place is amazing and a hub for smells, textures and colors. Each season brings its majestic personality and incredible flora. I have never visited a place as rich in terms of beauty as Bermuda is. And yes, I have gone many USA every spring as Bermuda was very much the garden of the US Northeast. Most of our first fragrances were inspired by single flowers: Jasmine, Oleander, Frangipani. These are still popular scents, but indeed very classic in their genre and sillage. Today, we find that our clients are more inclined to fall in love with fragrances that are more revealing of an emotion, a season, or of a place, and not necessarily of “one” botanical. For instance, our fragrance South Water is about the beach in Bermuda. Its notes are of Coconut milk, guava and sea salt. You can totally feel the sun on your skin and hear the crashing waves just by smelling it on a blotter. It conveys a perfect Sunday afternoon in Bermuda like nothing else. My South Water lovers can’t get enough of it.

WHAT ARE CUSTOMERS LOOKING FOR IN A SCENT TODAY?

places. Just landing here on a beautiful sunny day fills my heart with joy. And it is not just the beauty of our natural landscape – the lifestyle this place offers is incomparable. Bermuda is very affluent, but at the same time quite laid back. I often say that as a perfumer I am perfectly located in the middle of the ocean between New York and Paris, and I have totally used the influence of both continents. I really excited to bring Lili Bermuda to Palm Beach Florida as our very first venture outside of Bermuda. The reason I chose Palm Beach is because I feel that out perfumery is “resort” like and fits their better than any big urban center. Our fragrances are happy, light, and cheerful. Yet, they are elegant, creative and have a wonderful Bermuda signature. Our first few months so far have been fantastic and we look forward to showcasing our fragrances to many Floridians and snowbirds coming south.

With all the choices available in terms of fragrance, I think customers are looking for something that honors the color of their souls. And they can find it by trying many. Wearing a fragrance reveals a very intimate part of who we are, so choosing it well is very important. I think more than ever customers are self-aware, discriminating when it comes to beauty and originality, and they want to make sure that the fragrance they wear suits their personality and character. Having a signature scent is important, how best does one go about choosing a scent for themselves. It is trial and error. What smells good in a bottle or on someone else may not smell good on you. I think you must trust your instinct. Like clothing, if a fragrance suits you, people around you will comment and ask you what you are wearing. People do not comment on a fragrance they do not like. But if they like it, they will let you know. But you will also know in your heart, Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Designing for Small Spaces

Q

Dear Claudia,

I have some classic furniture pieces in my petite family room, but I need a new sofa and want to refresh my décor. Do you have any good design tips you could share? Thanks! Anne in Myers Park

A

Hi Ann,

Thanks for writing! There’s a lot you can do to freshen the look of your family room and make the most of your small space! First, minimize visual clutter, including color. Monochromatic and limited palettes work well. If you introduce too many colors, they may compete for attention and leave you feeling overwhelmed. Also, Designer: Cate Holcombe

it’s a myth that you should only use light colors for small rooms.

Deep, saturated color in a matte finish can help walls recede and add glam and sophistication. In a family room, there are usually two potential focal points, the fireplace and the television. Sometimes, a television is installed above the fireplace due to lack of space (or personal preference).

sofas are typically 77 inches or smaller and can fit more easily into tight spaces. • Extra deep sofas should be avoided.

• Avoid overstuffed furniture. Cleaner lines and lower heights can help make a space feel larger and open.

• If your sofas and chairs will be seen from the back, make sure they look good all the way around.

The Sweet Life of

B

SAMANTHA

By Melissa Corbin

ASCAR sensation Kyle Busch earned the nickname, The Candyman, because of his lead sponsor, Mars, Incorporated. Candy coating aside, the sweet life Busch and his wife Samantha appear to enjoy have a few less than semi-sweet notes to it. The couple met many moons ago on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was a rising NASCAR champion. She was working her way through college as a promotional model. They were young and in love with the world literally at their fingertips. The couple married in 2010 and knew they wanted kids from the get go, but figured they had plenty of time and wanted to devote more of it to travel. Logging quite a few miles since those days, the road to parenthood hasn’t been the short track first imagined. Rather a journey of exponential joy transcending a path paved in heartbreak and loneliness. Samantha uses her family’s story to help others achieve similar dreams while realizing new chapters in her own. And, she has a few things to say about it.

motoring THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION IS UPON US.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 is Volvo’s first ever fully electric car. It is based on the best-selling XC40 small premium SUV, the first Volvo model to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award. Inside, an innovative approach to all-round functionality provides drivers with plenty of storage space. The XC40 Recharge P8 offers several large and smartly designed storage compartments in the doors, under the seats

and in the trunk. Not having an internal combustion engine means that the car provides drivers with even more storage space, via a so-called ‘frunk’ storage space under the front hood. It will go 249 miles between charges.

In the early 20th century, Peugeot racers ruled the scene with some of the sport’s greatest drivers: Jules Goux, the first foreigner to win the Indy 500; Georges Boillot, first winner of the French Grand Prix; and Italian driving ace Paolo Zuccarelli. Of those early Peugeots, this is one of only two that remain.

Porsche-935

1979 Porsche 935 Peter Gregg won six IMSA Camel GT championships and scored 41 victories in the 1970s. In 1979, he won his final, and perhaps finest, season as he earned a record-setting eight wins and eight straight pole positions. The #59 Brumos Porsche 935 was Gregg’s last race car and is now believed to be the last remaining unmodified 935 still in existence. The Porsche 935 was the final evolution of the legendary 911 Carrera as introduced by Brumos Racing in 1973. It is a 700+ HP, twin turbocharged racer capable of speeds in excess of 200 mph. The #59 Brumos Porsche 935 is shown exactly as it raced when it won the 1979 IMSA Championship, and is authentic in every detail, down to Gregg’s distinctive tartan seat upholstery. The car won 53 percent of the races it entered, carrying Peter Gregg to 20 percent of his total career IMSA victories.

1923 Miller 122 Grand Prix Miller was the first American race car bought solely to race in Europe. This 1923 Miller 122 Grand Prix was driven by Bugatti racer Count Louis Zborowski, who raced it in England, Spain and France. Returned to the United State 89 years later, this is considered one of the most complete surviving Millers.

A Unique Setting

In 1924, 16 years after the first Ford Model-T was produced, Henry Ford

expanded production to a newly commissioned 165,000 square-foot plant in Jacksonville, Florida. The Brumos Collection is housed in a purpose-built facility whose meticulous design pays distinct homage to this part of Jacksonville’s automotive history.

Miller 122 Indy #2

From the moment guests enter the grounds, carefully crafted design details honor auto racing history. The guard rails along the roadways are reminiscent of the guard rails you would have found racing along the tracks of a bygone era; a board track walkway leads to the building entrance, and the surrounding brickwork pays tribute to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway “Brickyard.” “The Brumos Collection offers an exhibit of remarkable vehicles spanning three centuries, demonstrating the collaborations and rivalries that changed the automotive world,” said Executive Director Brandon Starks. “More than a technical tale, the exhibition reveals the very soul in these machines—cars inspired by their predecessors, with never-before-seen technologies developed by the hands of masters, tested in competition, and celebrated in history. Using interactive media, we’re able to bring these magnificent vehicles to life, providing guests with the opportunity to explore at their own pace.” Located at 5159 San Pablo Road South in Jacksonville, The Brumos Collection welcomes visitors on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more comprehensive information, please visit: www.thebrumoscollection.com. 1924-Ford-Plant

attracted some of the most stellar names of the day: Peter O’Toole, Winthrop Rockefeller, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas and Woody Allen. Quickly expanding on her brilliant and innovative idea, Jackie began designing fashionable men’s clothes. It became the meeting place of the rich and famous from both coasts, and it did not take long before the women followed. Lee Radziwell, discovered Jackie and soon brought her sister, Jackie Onassis to meet Jackie Rogers as well. Jackie transitioned into designing for women at Channels suggestion. Jackie’s following today includes some of the most recognized women in entertainment, politics and finance. Just to name a few include: Patti LuPone, Christine Baranski, Julianne Moore, Condoleezza Rice, Roberta Flack, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Courtney Love and so many more. techniques of her mentor. “It was the greatest experience of my life. I never realized what an effect she had on me.” The effect was to prove lasting. Jackie was anxious to begin her own career and against Chanel’s protests, she returned to New York and her modeling and television work while she investigated the fashion possibilities. “One day I was getting my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon,” she says, “when my hairdresser informed me he was cutting the hair of 250 guys a week at night! Great! I suggested we get together and work out of my apartment. “He’d cut hair, I’d sell Ken Scott’s incredible men’s shirts”…they were all the rage in the Sixties. Thinking out of the box became a revolutionary concept in merchandising, a barbershop boutique which mushroomed into a Madison Avenue shop proudly displaying the banner, “Jackie Rogers for Men.” The first of its kind, it created a whirlwind of publicity and “Restricting a piece to its design holds back on what should, and could, be developed. I go the way the fabric goes. That involves draping the cloth on a mannequin to get line and feeling. From that point the design develops, sometimes spinning off into a dozen different versions. My clothes are always simple. I take away, rather than add, more and more women are finding they don’t want their clothes wearing them. My clothes are seasonless, “ I cannot be defined by the season.” says Jackie Rogers. Rogers loves fabrics with texture, such as charmeuse, crepe, and chiffon. JACKIE ROGERS’ customers are addicted to the complicated simplicity of her design; designs that are a complete couture, refined, soft-spoken, elegant, enigmatic, with the dash and daring of a designer who knows her craft and has no fear of standing on the cutting edge of style. It was exactly this that caught my eye in her store window and drew me in. Palm Beach is a magical place, you never know who you might meet. What a great treat it was to catch Jackie in her shop at the time. She spends most of her time traveling between Palm Beach and New York. Jackie is now launching a more affordable line, very sexy cut on the bias called “Jackie”. It is a rare that you have the opportunity to speak with someone who worked with Chanel and is a fashion icon herself.

Cheers Jackie to a life well lived! 64

City breaks are a great option for you; they’ll give you a chance to taste different cultures, and get under the skin of a place via exhibitions, performances and so on. And since you’re such a social soul, you love getting to know new communities; the people of another country will often fascinate you as much as the country itself. For traveling companions, look to other air signs, including Gemini, Aquarius and fellow Librans. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Steeped in cultural legacy, Japan is closely associated with the star sign Libra. Austria, and in particular Vienna, is a very Libran place as well. Also pop Vietnam on your wish list, to explore dazzling cities, temple kingdoms and remote hillside communities.

Congratulations – you are THE traveler and explorer of the Zodiac, with big planet Jupiter as your ruler driving a need for global connections. Exploring the world is something that strongly appeals to your gregarious, outward-looking nature. You love the roaming freedom of travel and naturally resist boundaries. CAPRICORN December 22 - January 19

Traveler type: Alpine wanderer

Your star sign symbol is the mountain goat, and that gives you a real clue as to what you might like doing on holiday. As a Capricorn, you could be a really enthusiastic mountain trekker, with alpine peaks providing the kind of big perspective you hanker after. A trip into the wild will also help curb your reputation as the workaholic of the Zodiac, providing some much-needed down-time. You tend to go at a slow pace, which is what you’ll really enjoy on holiday; you’ll be able to slow down and pull back. There’s also a sense of history and legacy which is key your star sign, and may well govern the places you’re drawn to (Oxford in the UK, for example is a Capricorn city). Your perfect travel companions will be other Earth signs: seek out Taurus, Virgo and fellow Capricorn travelers. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Unplug in Chilean Patagonia, hike the Himalayan hills or immerse yourself in the an-

and the new-age hippie. Either way, you tend not to like to conform to what everyone else is doing; and on holiday, this translates to destinations that are different, unusual or overlooked. Taking on a true, wayward adventure is a very Aquarian thing to do. Moscow and St Petersburg in Russia are both Aquarius cities, and more remote parts of Scandinavia will also be a magnet to your intrepid streak. Bear in mind, too, that you’re one of the most humanitarian signs of the Zodiac. So, you might like to double on up any travel plans with an element of charity or volunteer work. Eco-awareness is also very important to you. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Try visiting Iceland out of season, to explore its dramatic glaciers, waterfalls and more from a whole new perspective. Stay in a unique jungle lodge in the heart of the Bornean rainforest, for a chance to see endangered orangutans, or camp out in eco tree tents in the woods of summer Finland.

really anything that chimes with the theme of water will serve you well. The people you travel with are important, too: there’s a gentle, empathetpeople you travel with. Reach out to other water signs; Cancer, Scorpio and fellow Pisces, for travelers who fit into your vibe. Yours is the last sign of the Zodiac and often there’s a spiritual or religious side to your nature. Santiago de Compostela in Spain is a Pisces town, as is Egypt. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Head on a sea-faring pilgrimage to the beautiful islands of the Philippines, or zip around the Balinese coast by boat. The pyramids of ancient Egypt will give your spiritual side food for thought, along with Nile sailing to sweeten that sea-loving soul.

ARIES March 21 - April 19

Traveler type: Pioneer

As the first sign of the Zodiac, you’re a truly adventurous soul who’s drawn to new frontiers and unexplored horizons. The fact that you’re ruled by the planet Mars, representing courage and daring, only enhanc-

es this impulse. Your ideal holiday would be something that packs an adven-ture punch, and gives you an adrenaline rush. City-wise, Naples and Kraków – both brimming with colour and excitement – have your number. You get bored easily, so two weeks on a beach is not for you. You’re very independent, and have no problem going it alone. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Try zip-lining through the rainforests of Belize, adventure caving in Borneo or a Finnish snowmobile safari.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

Traveler type: Easy breezy

You’re ruled by Venus, the planet of sensuality. This means you appreciate beauty, but you can also be quite lazy; you’re naturally drawn to places where you can properly chill, take it easy and have time out. As one of the Earth signs, you’re also very connected to nature, so vast green landscapes are ideal for you. Ireland and Switzerland are both ruled by Taurus. Look to similar outdoorsy yet relaxed settings shared with fellow Earth signs (Virgo, Capricorn) to guide your travel plans. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Pop Slovenia on your radar. With wild beauty and lakeside glamping, it offers the perfect balance for you. Also mellow Laos, with a slow boat trip through the Land of a Thousand Elephants that allows plenty of time to unwind.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

LEO

Traveler type: Sunshine schmoozer

July 23 - August 22

Your star sign is ruled by the sun, which means you crave heat, vitality and warmth. The sun-shine literally feeds your spirit, which means you need to head somewhere hot at least a few times a year. Along with basking on the beach, you need a few things to do as well. Your star sign is playful, colorful and quite dramatic at times: you need to be centre of attention. Your ideal travel companions would be other fire signs; so fellow Leos, along with Saggitarius and Aries travelers. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: The vibrant colorscapes of India are like catnip for you (Mumbai is a Leo-ruled city). Also consider Los Angeles – the Hollywood dynasty is strongly Leo-orientated – or places such as Cuba and Colombia, that are brimming with sun-shine, salsa and rum in roughly equal measure.

Traveler type: Party animal

Lively Mercury is your ruling planet. It’s all about communication, which gives you the gift of the gab and means you’re always up for a good time. You love people-watching and are drawn to fun cities brimming with life; London, San Francisco and Melbourne are all Gemini cities. Your element is air, which is one of the social signs. Group travel is a great option for you, as you’re forever open to making new friends to hit the town with, as well as learning about new cultures. Curiosity is a key Gemini theme, so make sure you give this streak plenty of fuel. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: East Coast Australia, with its dynamic coastal cities, has to be top of your list. Don’t miss party-time capital Brazil, either, while swinging through the Deep South USA will keep those good times rolling.

VIRGO

Traveler type: Off-grid romantic

August 23 - September 22

Your planet is Mercury, which represents the mind, and you’re also one of the Earth signs. This means a back-to-nature theme may play well for you. You enjoy going off camping, or seeking out places of solace that offer degree of head space, away from the hustle of modern life. Your star sign is linked to the health and body, so anything with a wellness angle, like a yoga retreat, will bring you satisfaction. In addition, every Virgo has a strong romantic streak; you’re naturally drawn to classical, expressive destinations such as France and Greece. Organization is a key theme for you, as well: group travel would be great, as you like to know what you’re doing when. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Delve into the rich artistic heritage of France, or find solitude off-grid in Norway or Ne-

pal. Mindful yoga in Tuscany, meanwhile, will nourish both your romantic and health-conscious tendencies.

Your ruling planet is the moon, and the moon is all about the home. So, it may actually take a bit of persuasion to get you away from your base. But when you do stray, you’re drawn places that feel quite familiar and secure. Cancer is also closely connected to the notion of family, so travel-ing as part of a tight-knit group would suit you well. As one of the emotional water signs, any sea or lakeside locations have a really soothing effect on you. One of the cities associated with Cancer is Amsterdam, with its labyrinth of calming canals. Also New Zealand, a welcoming nation of vast lakes and dreamy beaches. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Scotland, with its dramatic lochs, glens and cosy pubs, could be a great choice for you. Or how about Canada, known for its warm city vibes and beautiful mountain lakes? Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

FORT

Luxe Picks the Ritz Carlton, Ft. Lauderdale, it is the perfect getaway by itself or pre or post cruise.

LAUDERDALE The hotel offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic or the intercoastal. There are more then 300 miles of canals that weave through the area with about 165 miles that run through Fort Lauderdale itself, giving it the nick name “Venice of America”. Inspired by grand ocean liners of days gone by, the beach hotel’s entire property has been designed to resemble a classic ocean liner. The seventh floor, ocean view pool deck is no exception. The elevated pool is inspired by a ship’s bow. Here you can enjoy your views in a private pool side cabana. The Fort Lauderdale Beach is located just in front of the hotel, and can be accessed with a few steps via a private skywalk or by crossing the street on the ground lev-el. While this is a public beach, pairs of contemporary lounge chairs with umbrellas, towels, and bottled water are set up for guests to enjoy. Enchanting rooms and suites feature everything from lavish linens to private balconies. Rooms and suites blend hotel luxuries with home-like

touches. Each offering a spacious layout, balcony and view of the Atlantic or Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway. With a prime location like this, amongst miles of sandy beaches and the Fort Lauder-dale Boulevard running along the beach it is well worth the stroll. Although the water taxi makes a stop along the Las Olas Boulevard, there is no better way then to explore then by foot. It runs from the business district to the Fort Lauderdale beach and is packed with shops and galleries, boutiques, restaurants and mediterranean inspired architec-ture. It is encouraged to slow down and take in the experience of your visit. Indulge in brunch at Burlock Coast’s restaurant with farm to table cuisine and private dining. Top off your stay by enjoying a full body detox with the Ritz spa with a signature cleansing ceremo-ney. The Ritz Fort Lauderdale, is truly a favorite.

UPTOWN’S

REAL MAIN EVENT by Melissa Corbin

Let’s face it. Regardless of where you come from, there really is no place like home. And, as a travel journalist I’ve found myself in more than a few situations where I could’ve really used a pair of ruby slippers. In these times, I’ve found comfort in such amenities offered by properties like the ones within The InterContinental Hotels Group portfolio. Owned by the San Francisco-based luxury chain, Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel in Uptown Charlotte is where you’ll find a restaurant I continue to crave well beyond my last trip to the Queen City. Angeline’s is one of those places that checks all the boxes when googling “best restaurants” in a new city you’ve never been. And, while Angeline’s is still fairly new to Charlotte’s culinary landscape, you’ll feel as if she’s been here all along. Opening the fall of 2017, Angeline’s Church Street address is convenient to many area attractions but is really the main event. Walking past the extensive wine collection encased in glass, you’ll notice many other design elements like the floor to ceiling windows, the marble topped bar and edison light fixtures which help the space feel light without the weight its rich wood accents often detail. man gets to play with his food a little on this one with the dab of this and a drizzle of that. While I could’ve used a bit more octopus to sop up those divine sauces, the smoky flavors stood up to my glass of Super Tuscan wine, a blend you don’t always see on bythe-glass menus. Another sure bet for my Super Tuscan pairing was the grilled pork chop served with chive risotto and broccoli rabe dressed with pickled swiss chard stems and cherry glace. But, if you simply can’t resist the obvious go ahead and indulge in the 21 day dry-aged ribeye. If you’re on a budget and time is of the essence, hit the sides heavy. At just $8, each plate is plenty for two people to share a few and feel like they’ve actually splurged. Just make sure to get the Brussels sprouts with saba and parmesan. If you don’t alInspired by some of the finest tratorrias, Angeline’s Italian menu uses regional ingredients when appropriate and features a lineup of small plates, wood-fired pizzas, pastas and entrees of which many could easily be shared. Still, you may want to keep every last bite for yourself. One of the very few negative reviews I found when googling this urban gem was a complaint about portion sizes. Hey, us Southerners often like our healthy sized plates. Indeed, the servings aren’t what you might find at one of those chains that start every meal out with garlic knots and salad. In full disclosure, those joints have their place and are truly a guilty pleasure for me. But, Angelines’s “place” is under an entirely different zip code and should be considered as such. Executive Chef Robert Hoffman’s career has followed the tenets of not only molecular gastronomy, but also butchery and charcuterie. But, if you’re thinking foams and schmears, think again. Hoffman’s larder positions Angeline’s for the adventuresome type just as much as a meat and tater sort of guest. Starting with whipped ricotta served with wood fired sourdough, lavender honey, and pistachios, I instantly knew I was in for a real treat. The bread’s char cut through the ricotta’s velvety texture. The honey’s sweet floral notes balanced the savory aperitivo with a pistachio crunch for good measure. It’s one of those dishes I’ll feel cheated if I don’t savor upon my next visit. And, from what my server, Heather, says this is a thing for most who try it. As it turns out, stellar service is also a thing here. I’m a sucker for a menu offering octopus. So, the charred spanish octopus with eggplant caponata and romesco sauce was a no brainer. Hoff-

ready have saba in your personal pantry, this is the perfect time to understand why you should. Balsamic’s granddaddy, this un-aged vinegar is cooked down grape musk that’s rounder and sweeter at half the price. As for desserts, I’ve never understood why someone would say they don’t need it. No one needs dessert. Pair the Bomboloni with a pour of Cleto Chiarli Lambrusco for a classic Romagna finish and thank me later. Open every day of the week, Angeline’s breakfast through late night pizza is definitely now on heavy rotation for my Charlotte stops. Next time I’m in town, I plan on hitting Angeline’s sister hang up at the rooftop lounge, Merchant & Trade, for cocktails. Who’s in?

alm Beach is a favored rendezvous among celebrities, a

playground of the ultra-rich since Henry Flagler founded the city in 1911. Mansions are cloaked behind cascading bougainvillea and top notch shopping and sandy beaches are never more then a few steps away. Palm Beach has been a dazzling tourist destination for well over 100 years. The island’s first hotel, the Coconut Grove House, opened its doors in 1880. In 1894, a railway line made it easier than ever for travelers to get to the area that would later be known

Brazilian Court was the epicenter of Palm Beach society. Just a few steps from the hotel is Worth Avenue - the east coast answer to Rodeo Drive. Worth Avenue showcases coveted designers and is home to many independent designers as well. Worth Avenue is not just a shopping destination; it becomes its own experience, walking among the classic grace of its Mediterranean architecture to the bougainvillea that tumbles over stairwells and in shady tucked-away vias. It is the world’s most exclusive purveyor of art galleries, luxury goods and fine dinning. If you prefer to window shop take a historic walking tour down Worth Avenue to see some of the original buildings and learn more about the changes and growth over the years. For dinner, head into West Palm Beach to try out something new: Todd’s on Dixie Highway. Run by chef Todd English, this eatery has quickly become an area favorite. It is not uncommon for the celebrity chef to personally approach diners in the spacious dining room to see how they are enjoying their meals. If you are looking for a lighter option, small plates and appetizers are served at the restaurant’s long and welcoming bar.

Consider authentic Turkish foods from Agora Mediterranean Kitchen or one of the light small plates from Avocado Grill on Datura. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with the dramatic rooftop restaurant at Restoration Hardware. It really is a must while in PB. Giant white birds of paradise create an intimate space while black and white marble floors add luxury and shine. Be sure to save room for dessert. The massive banana split is big enough for two.

DAY TWO: EAT YOUR HEART OUT Make your second day in Palm Beach all about the food. Cafe Boulud’s prix fix brunch allows you to enjoy a range of salads, posh entrees like rolled omelets and indulgent desserts. If you would like a lighter start to the day, they also have a selection of pastries, chia seed puddings and more. Or if you prefer dinner, the restaurant has become one of Palm Beach’s most coveted dining destinations since opening in 2003. Cafe Boulud boasts an elegant contemporary and sleek design - complete with a beautiful shimmery ceiling made from sea shells and Pecky Cyprus. The French - American menu balances signature Boulud dishes and French favorites inspired by Boulud’s restaurants around the world, with an emphasis on Palm Beach’s fabulous seafood. For lunch, consider crossing the bridge to the mainland to see what West Palm has to offer. The area has a free downtown trolley that can take you to the area’s many bars, restaurants and shopping destinations. Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

DAY THREE: INDULGE AND RELAX After all that bustle and activity, the best thing you can do with your third day on the coast is sit back and relax. Luckily, the Brazilian Court Hotel is the perfect place to do that. This award-winning hotel recently refreshed their rooms. Designed to enhance the feeling of effortlessly modern Palm Beach style.keeping the old world charm while updating to add the latest amenities. “ In embarking on a refreshment of our guests rooms it was important to us to honor the hotel’s Legacy of timelessness while also breathing fresh life into the space” said Bobby Schlesinger, owner of the Brazilian Court Hotel. “The new room style intentionally pays reverence to the history of Palm Beach beyond the hotel’s storied walls - a place of classic, enduring refinement that is both vibrant and inviting.” Room choices range from a spacious 400 square foot studio to a four bedroom luxury suite with two bathrooms and a separate living room. Nearby, you can relax under the palms on designer lounges, or swim in the year-round outdoor pool and hot tub. Don’t forget to make an appointment at the Frédéric Fekkai Salon, located at the Brazilian Court. The Paris-trained stylist opened his first name-sake salon at New York’s Bergdorf Goodman in 1989. Since then, he has helped women discover their own unique and inimitable styles. You will be stepping out in Palm Beach style for sure. A top stylist Jonathan from the south of France gave me the most wonderful wash and blow dry. I highly recommend him.- tres bien. Palm Beach has much to offer active explorers and those looking for a quiet and historic place to unwind. I know I will be back time and time again. And with each visit discover one more reason why I love Palm Beach.

This is Andalucia whose very name instantly conjures up an alluring sense of exoticism and adventure. For I had arrived at the Finca La Donaira (www.ladonaira.com) near to Montecorto. The Finca is a haven for those attracted to walking, riding, hiking and wellness. It’s set high above the plains overlooking the Peñón de El Gastor, which lords over the sleepy village of the same name. In view are speckled plantations of olive trees and oaks generating many an acorn while white birds rest in harmony beside large Pajuna cattle. TIPS For guidebooks I recommend Pallas Guides’ “Andalucia” by Michael Jacobs and The DK Eyewitness Travel Guide. More local walking detail is to be found in Cicerone’s “Walking the mountains of Ronda and Grazalema” by Guy Hunter-Watts. As for getting into the local spirit, Google an image of El Jaleo, the large painting by John Singer Sargent in Boston, depicting a Spanish I was lucky enough for my stay to coincide with an in-house flamenco performance. Flamenco comes from a hybrid of local folklore, gypsies and Muslim chants where the dancer and singer take the lead from the guitarist, like a pianist from a conductor. I was ready and eager to be swept away by its dramatic flourish and thrilling beat. Goosebumps appeared on me straight from the ‘duende’, the magic and life force that was transmitting telepathically. The female dancer lost no time in getting fully immersed. Her arms were held aloft and her head thrown defiantly back. Then she curved her arms round her body, bent her elbow and hammered her heels remorselessly home into the floorboards. On such a small stage one false step and you’re either flat on your face or else in the audience. All part of the strident act of strutting and stamping from a proud carriage and intense demeanour. Discover Historic Southern Pines, NC If you're feeling the urge for a few days away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life, you may need to look no farther than the Sandhills of North Carolina. Just over an hour from Raleigh-Durham, and two hours from Charlotte rests the picturesque township of Southern Pines. The pace seems to slow a bit as you stroll through the magnolia-lined streets of downtown. The historic district is made up of a unique blend of shops, mom-and-pop businesses, taverns and an outstanding selection of restaurants from pizza-by-the-slice, to high end steak, seafood & pasta restaurants, to farm-to-table experiences that rival those in any metropolitan area. TIPS For tips I suggest Christopher Catling’s Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Madeira as the best guidebook. Though there are the inevitable imports to such a far-flung island, the food is locally sourced and so the cost of living to locals and tourists alike should prove reasonable. Don’t go expecting beaches or nightclubs but for an even quieter time of things check the weather before embarking on an ocean boat trip. The climate is a steady 77 F in summer and 63 F in winter (when you can get as much as two more hours of daylight than in Britain). However the weather is changeable with clouds scudding by so I recommend taking a selection of lightweight clothes as it’s all about layers. Don’t drive around Funchal unless you’re fully briefed on directions as the steep narrow lanes can require you to reverse to let a school bus through when even a Smart car would be a squeeze.

A LEGACY FOR THE AGES HOW THE HOME OF THE

QUEEN’S CUP STEEPLECHASE CAME TO BE

by Colleen Guilfoile Richmond

Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

101

Just outside of Charlotte, in Mineral Springs, North Carolina there’s a vast and verdant piece of countryside where flora and fauna roam freely. Some thirty years ago, this land may have become a casualty of “little boxes on a hillside” as Malvina Reynolds wrote about way back in 1962 had it not been for a promise Bill Price made to his kids. It’s the site where every spring more than 15,000 spectators dawn their finest for The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase. While there’s many Queen’s Cup memories etched in the minds and hearts of many, the gracious legacy of the land itself Price treasures most.

The day I met Bill Price was the day I knew what nirvana must feel like. He showed me around his slice of heaven and pointed to the vibrant pastures where all the deer and retired horses were living it up better than The Queen Mother herself. On this day I felt a whole new appreciation for not only the sport, but also the importance of protecting one of our remaining vital resources –– wide open spaces. When Price started looking for land, his plan was always to have a proper site for a new steeplechase. His father shared an investment with him of $1,000,000 for the initial purchase of the land. But, they actually had to put another $1.5 million into the land and track. The land had been cleared, but in addition to stump removal they had to move a lot of earth for what would become one of the safest steeplechase tracks in America. I truly had a hard time keeping my jaw from grazing the ground the first time I laid eyes upon the majesty of it all. Shortly after Price bought the land, everyone was quite disappointed because builders were chomping at the bit to put homes on it as he remembered. He actually got a call from a prominent Charlotte individual

who will remain nameless according to Price. But in the most distinct

You might be spot on if you feel a “devil in a blue dress” scenario in the making with such a proposed gentleman’s agreement. But, Price was confident in his strategy. They met in the Winn Dixie parking lot that day where the land baron rolled down his window and directed Price to “get in my car.” I’m not going to lie, as Price was telling me this story, visions of Scorsese screenplays danced in my head. Price got in that car where the mystery man promptly offered him double what he paid for on the spot for his 260 acres of dirt and trees. But, Price countered with the fact that the land was not for sale and was confused as to why the baron didn’t want the land prior. “Well, before you bought it, I didn’t think it was worth anything,” the man explained. So, is it true that the market will only bare what the market demands? Two years later after the Queen’s Cup held an open house to show-off the newly finished racecourse, another offer came through a realtor offering over $10 million. Ecstatic, Price went home that evening, sat down at the dinner table, and proceeded to regale his family with their possi-

big brother upstairs crying, “Yeah!” Sheepishly laughing at this point in the story, his wife Carrington gave him the final blow, “Well, what you gonna do now big boy?” Out of the mouths of babes is where the truth lies as it were and almost always, for that matter. As it turned out, the market had absolutely nothing to do with this legendary story. To this day the land remains in the Price’s stewardship and will continue in a responsible fashion well beyond his lifetime thanks to the Catawba Lands Conservancy (CLC) which currently protects more than 165 properties totaling more than 15,000 acres of land for public benefit . Upon completion of the track, Price’s parents Midge & Jim stopped by on their way from Florida to their Maryland home. As an investment

banker, Jim wanted a return on that original $1,000,000 like any professional would. He had envisioned homes on the other side of the track. So, Price took his father out to the overlook and showed him the amazing view, “Dad, can you imagine homes on the other side of the racecourse?” Price was so proud to hear his father agree that day that his idyllic view would never be clouded. Even after the conservancy plans, his father reported not one regret as a tearful Price recanted with pure joy. According to the American Farmland Trust, an astounding 175 acres of farmland currently diminishes hourly due to development in this country. Coupled with the CLC’s work to protect watersheds, wildlife and the likes, the Price family valiantly did their part to preserve North Carolina’s pristine land. While food may not be grown on this particular stretch, they continue to feed their community in such allegorical ways. Volume 4, Issue 1 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

ew York has Fifth Avenue and the Monterey Peninsula has 17 Mile Drive. For the true golf enthusiast there is no better boulevard that represents the history and heri-

tage of golf than Midland Road in the Sandhills of North Carolina. This key artery is the connector between the golf Mecca’s of The Village of Pinehurst (a national historic golf landmark) and the town of Southern Pines. Years ago, a trolley ran the length of the road providing visitors from the northeast with an efficient way to reach resorts in the Village of Pinehurst after they disembarked the train in Southern Pines. Massive Longleaf and Loblolly pines provide a soothing canopy over this golf avenue and surrounding golf course and communities. If they could talk they’d share their tales and stories of the past 100 years from the likes of Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Donald Ross (the famous golf architect who live in the area until his death in 1948). As Fifth Avenue’s shops are the jewels of the crown along that route, so are the 15 golf courses you’ll see during your six mile journey down scenic Midland Road. From the world renowned Donald Ross designed Pinehurst No. 2, site of the 1999, 2005 and 2014 U.S. OPEN Championships to the former equestrian race track transformed into the challenging Dan Maples designed Longleaf golf course and residential community there is no shortage of eye candy for the golf connoisseur. INGREDIENTS: • ½ lb. Jumbo Lump Crab Meat • ½ lb. Lump or Claw Crab Meat • 1 cup Crushed Unsalted Saltine Crackers (about 21 crackers) • 1 Large Egg • ½ cup Mayonnaise • 2-3 Dashes Tabasco Sauce • 1 tsp. Old Bay Seasoning • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce • ⅛ tsp. Kosher Salt • 1 tbsp. Minced Fresh Italian Parsley • 2 tsp. Fresh Lemon Juice • 1 tbsp. Lemon Zest (optional) • ¼ cup Vegetable Oil, for cooking • Tarter Sauce, as needed for serving • Fresh Dill, as needed for garnish • Lemon Wedges, as needed for garnish

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine crab meat and crushed crackers in a large mixing bowl. 2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, mayonnaise, tobacco sauce, old bay seasoning, Worcestershire, salt, Italian parsley, lemon juice and optional lemon zest. 3. Fold the mayonnaise mixture into the crab meat and set the mix in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors merry. 4. Once you’r ready to cook, divide the crab cake mixture into 8 patties. Be careful not to overwork the mixture (this will ensure you still have large clumps of crab meat). 5. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add oil and heat. Test the oil with a tiny piece of crab cake mix. If it sizzles... the oil is ready. 6. Once the oil is hot enough to sear the crab cakes, cook them for about 3 - 4 minutes per side. You know they are done when they are golden brown and hot in the center. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may have to work in batches. 7. When finished, transfer crab cakes to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. 8. Serve immediately with tater sauce, fresh dill and lemon wedges. 9. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Serves: 8 patties

JESS NOTES ON MARYLAND CRAB CAKES: Additional add-in’s that taste yummy: 1 clove of minced garlic, 2 tsp. of dijon mustard or 1 tbsp. sesame seeds. Sometimes I’ll even add a dash of baking powder to make them a little more fluffy (about 2 tsp.). If you only have salted saltines on hand, go ahead and use those… just skip adding salt to the mixture during step 2. You can add between 2/3 cup to 1 cup of saltines to this recipe, depending on your personal binder preference. Not an Old Bay Seasoning type of person? (Gasp!) That’s ok, you can substitute with whatever seasoning you enjoy most. Old Bay gives this a kick of heat, so keep that in mind when you’re swapping it out. To make the Pepperoncini Tartar, simply mix the following ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl: • 1.5 cups Mayo

• 1 tsp. Sugar

• 2 tbsp. Pepperoncini Juice

• 1 tbsp minced Shallot

• 4 Pepperoncini’s (minced)

• 1 tbsp. Fresh Chives

• 2 Baby Dill Pickles (minced)

• 1 tsp. Minced Parsley

• 1 tbsp. Fresh Lemon Juice

• Dash of Tabasco, Salt + Pepper

• 2 tsp. Stone Ground Dijon

(to taste).

As we lift up women in our world that make it so beautiful, many with special songs in their hearts were recognized during the 2020 awards season.
